to Matthew 28, verse 1. 00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:32.840 We're going to be looking at the story from Matthew's Gospel where we heard from earlier. 00:00:35.320 --> 00:00:36.760 Matthew 28, verse 1. 00:00:37.620 --> 00:00:43.719 And as we come to that wonderful Resurrection Sunday morning, we can't help but remember what's led up to this moment. 00:00:45.040 --> 00:00:46.540 And yet, where do we even start? 00:00:47.980 --> 00:00:51.760 This is all part of a greater story, the story of Jesus. 00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:57.559 And that's even part of an even bigger story, the story of our world, the story of God. 00:00:57.799 --> 00:01:03.320 But let's remember for a moment what happened just the week leading up to all this. 00:01:04.299 --> 00:01:06.060 Jesus has come into Jerusalem. 00:01:07.459 --> 00:01:10.900 Jesus, the great miracle worker. 00:01:11.379 --> 00:01:13.159 Jesus, the healer. 00:01:14.039 --> 00:01:18.439 Jesus, the one who has been teaching massive crowds and with such authority. 00:01:18.439 --> 00:01:24.640 He's come riding into Jerusalem just a week before all this to shouts of Hosanna. 00:01:25.659 --> 00:01:28.120 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:01:29.140 --> 00:01:30.500 Blessed is the King of Israel. 00:01:31.539 --> 00:01:35.420 It's been a week of excitement and anticipation. 00:01:36.700 --> 00:01:41.200 Just over three years before all this, almost nobody knew who this man was. 00:01:41.859 --> 00:01:47.359 And now here he comes riding into the capital city of Israel in the manner of a king. 00:01:48.439 --> 00:01:51.739 With a massive crowd of people all around him. 00:01:52.920 --> 00:01:57.900 And people have gathered from all over to mark the Passover celebration here in Jerusalem. 00:01:58.759 --> 00:02:04.459 And the spotlight, the attention of everyone is on this man, Jesus. 00:02:05.420 --> 00:02:09.139 Up until now, he's been a highly polarizing figure. 00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:17.259 And it seems that every time Jesus has come up to Jerusalem for another festival in the years leading up to this, 00:02:17.319 --> 00:02:19.579 all kinds of exciting things have been happening. 00:02:20.559 --> 00:02:21.779 There's been healings. 00:02:22.379 --> 00:02:24.879 He's done signs, miracles. 00:02:25.719 --> 00:02:33.279 There's been heated debate between this rabbi who hails from Galilee and the Jewish religious leaders. 00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:40.340 And for some time now, Jesus has come to be on the wanted list of the religious leaders. 00:02:40.699 --> 00:02:42.180 And many in Jerusalem know it. 00:02:43.319 --> 00:02:50.080 Many people believe that Jesus is the King, the Messiah, the Christ that God promised long ago. 00:02:50.500 --> 00:02:52.520 And if not that, they believe he's a prophet. 00:02:52.520 --> 00:02:58.780 Even some believe he's the ultimate prophet sent from God. 00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:04.660 But at the same time, many do not believe this about Jesus. 00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:12.040 Some think of him as a great trickster, a deceiver, or even a crazy person. 00:03:12.039 --> 00:03:18.079 And all week long, Jesus has been going to the temple courts and teaching the people. 00:03:18.879 --> 00:03:22.439 And the crowd there has been hanging on his every word. 00:03:23.519 --> 00:03:27.039 The religious leaders have been doing everything that they can to challenge him, 00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:32.399 to discredit him, to humiliate him, to trick him or trap him in his words. 00:03:32.699 --> 00:03:34.159 But nothing has worked. 00:03:35.579 --> 00:03:39.899 And then, eventually, finally, the evening of the Jewish Passover came. 00:03:39.900 --> 00:03:44.960 And Jesus came to celebrate the Passover with his disciples. 00:03:45.920 --> 00:03:49.120 That very night, under the cover of darkness, 00:03:50.219 --> 00:03:54.759 Judas led a group of men out to where Jesus was. 00:03:55.379 --> 00:03:59.560 And they arrested Jesus and his up the people in Jerusalem to demand Jesus' execution, 00:04:22.340 --> 00:04:24.780 even though he was found innocent by Pilate. 00:04:26.060 --> 00:04:27.939 And Pilate wanted to calm the crowd. 00:04:28.639 --> 00:04:31.800 So he handed Jesus over to be crucified. 00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:37.060 Jesus was nailed to a cross and left to die. 00:04:39.319 --> 00:04:45.680 After Jesus had been executed, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Jewish council, 00:04:46.379 --> 00:04:51.500 he went and got permission to take Jesus' body down from the cross and bury it. 00:04:51.500 --> 00:04:57.279 So he prepared the body and he buried Jesus in his own new tomb. 00:04:58.240 --> 00:05:02.040 He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance. 00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:07.899 And then the chief priests and the Pharisees went and got permission from Pilate to secure the tomb. 00:05:07.899 --> 00:05:13.239 They put a seal on it and they posted a guard at the entrance. 00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:18.159 They wanted to ensure that Jesus' body remained undisturbed. 00:05:19.099 --> 00:05:22.120 They remembered what Jesus had said while he was teaching, 00:05:22.819 --> 00:05:26.599 that he would be killed and then be raised on the third day. 00:05:26.600 --> 00:05:31.040 And they didn't want to take any chances, so they put a few extra measures in place. 00:05:32.100 --> 00:05:35.720 00:06:39.599 the taunts and the mocking of those who passed by and saw him, 00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:46.420 and even his words which he spoke in those last hours and moments before he died. 00:06:47.600 tells us that they had bought some spices so that they might go and anoint Jesus' body. 00:07:12.180 --> 00:07:15.219 Matthew here tells us simply that they went to see the tomb. 00:07:16.299 -->
