chapter 17, second book of the Bible, page 75, 00:44:05.420 --> 00:44:07.420 if you're using a church Bible. 00:44:07.420 --> 00:44:14.420 I'm going to read verses 1 to 7. 00:44:14.420 --> 00:44:23.420 Thinking about what Paul said, that Christ is this rock, the true rock, as we get into Exodus 17. 00:44:23.420 --> 00:44:31.420 The whole Israelite community set out from the desert of sin, travelling from place to place as the Lord commanded. 00:44:31.420 --> 00:44:36.420 They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 00:44:36.420 --> 00:44:41.420 So they quarreled with Moses and said, give us water to drink. 00:44:41.420 --> 00:44:46.420 Moses replied, why do you quarrel with me? 00:44:46.420 --> 00:44:49.420 Why do you put the Lord to the test? 00:44:49.420 --> 00:44:52.420 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. 00:44:52.420 --> 00:44:59.420 They said, why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst? 00:44:59.420 --> 00:45:05.420 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, what am I to do with these people? 00:45:05.420 --> 00:45:08.420 They are almost ready to stone me. 00:45:08.420 --> 00:45:11.420 The Lord answered Moses, go out in front of the people. 00:45:11.420 --> 00:45:17.420 Take with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 00:45:17.420 --> 00:45:20.420 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. 00:45:20.420 --> 00:45:24.420 Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink. 00:45:24.420 --> 00:45:28.420 So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 00:45:28.420 --> 00:45:33.420 And he called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled, 00:45:33.420 --> 00:45:40.420 and because they tested the Lord, saying, is the Lord among us or not? 00:45:40.420 --> 00:45:43.420 We're going to leave our reading there. 00:45:43.420 --> 00:45:53.420 Now just to remind you, or if you're new to church, we are trying to see Christ in all of Scripture over these last few weeks. 00:45:53.420 --> 00:45:56.420 We've seen him as the true King. 00:45:56.420 --> 00:46:01.420 We've seen him as the true point of connection between heaven and earth. 00:46:01.420 --> 00:46:07.420 We've seen him as the true righteous sufferer given for our salvation. 00:46:07.420 --> 00:46:17.420 We've seen him as representing the true reality of the Day of Atonement, that God has made a way in Jesus for our sin to be covered. 00:46:17.420 --> 00:46:24.420 We've seen him as the true year of Jubilee, our means to have true spiritual freedom. 00:46:24.420 --> 00:46:30.420 And today, we see him as the true rock of Exodus 17. 00:46:30.420 --> 00:46:36.420 We're in the middle of Old Testament Israel's journey in the wilderness. 00:46:36.420 --> 00:46:46.420 So, it's a specific journey for them, but it's a journey that brings questions that have universal significance, I think, for all of us today. 00:46:46.420 --> 00:46:49.420 It's a story of God being questioned. 00:46:49.420 --> 00:46:53.420 A story of God being tested. 00:46:53.420 --> 00:46:55.420 Do you care? 00:46:55.420 --> 00:46:58.420 Is God able to provide for us? 00:46:58.420 --> 00:47:02.420 Is God among and with His people? 00:47:02.420 --> 00:47:07.420 Now, that's a question or questions that you might be bringing with you today. 00:47:07.420 --> 00:47:13.420 Or it might be questions that you have asked in your journey through life. 00:47:13.420 --> 00:47:18.420 Perhaps if you're here today and you're not a Christian, you're wondering, what is the character of the God of the Bible? 00:47:18.420 --> 00:47:21.420 Is He trustworthy? 00:47:21.420 --> 00:47:26.420 If you're here as a Christian, perhaps you're going through hard times. 00:47:26.420 --> 00:47:32.420 Perhaps you feel like you're in the middle of or you've been through your own wilderness experiences. 00:47:32.420 --> 00:47:35.420 And you've wrestled with those questions. 00:47:35.420 --> 00:47:36.420 Are you there? 00:47:36.420 --> 00:47:38.420 Do you care? 00:47:38.420 --> 00:47:39.420 Is he loving them? 00:47:39.420 --> 00:47:40.420 Is he loving you healingWhat? 00:47:40.420 --> 00:47:41.420 Is it God? 00:47:41.420 --> 00:47:43.420 Is help in the LEDTjänst a your life Secondarlow? 00:47:43.420 --> 00:47:44.420 Is warfare. 00:47:44.420 --> 00:47:46.420 Is it God willing to spare our father? 00:47:46.420 --> 00:48:01.920 And there's all the kids who have 00:48:01.920 --> 00:48:09.900 for knowledge, or for power, or for success, or for meaning, or love, or for purpose. 00:48:09.900 --> 00:48:16.880 This speaks of deep longings and deep needs within our lives. 00:48:16.880 --> 00:48:23.119 And there are times as people where we find ourselves, as it were, in the desert. 00:48:23.119 --> 00:48:31.360 We are desperate for those things and we are trying everything, but that thirst remains. 00:48:31.360 --> 00:48:38.000 It's as if there is no oasis to satisfy. 00:48:38.000 --> 00:48:45.980 To paraphrase Augustine, our hearts are thirsty. 00:48:45.980 --> 00:48:52.320 And Exodus 17 reminds us that thirst will remain until we find our true satisfaction in our 00:48:52.320 --> 00:48:54.340 God. 00:48:54.340 --> 00:48:58.079 And so as we think about this text, we're also going to be thinking about the good news within 00:48:58.079 --> 00:49:03.420 the Bible that in Jesus Christ, we do know the character of God. 00:49:03.420 --> 00:49:05.719 We do know that God cares. 00:49:05.719 --> 00:49:10.639 And we do know that He does come near to be among us. 00:49:10.639 --> 00:49:17.139 And that in Jesus, God does answer the thirst that we have in our lives and He does provide 00:49:17.139 --> 00:49:20.179 eternal satisfaction. 00:49:20.179 --> 00:49:23.779 So two simple points today from this text. 00:49:23.780 --> 00:49:30.500 We're going to think first of all about a grumbling people and then secondly about a gracious God. 00:49:30.500 --> 00:49:34.420 So the grumbling people, first of all, in these first four verses. 00:49:34.420 --> 00:49:38.400 So as we said, we are in the middle of a wilderness journey. 00:49:38.400 --> 00:49:43.420 God's people Israel have been taken out of slavery in Egypt and they're moving towards Mount Sinai 00:49:43.420 --> 00:49:48.120 to meet with God, ultimately to go to the Promised Land. 00:49:48.119 --> 00:49:54.039 And God has been testing them and their faith as they travel. 00:49:54.039 --> 00:49:56.960 Is this a people who will trust God? 00:49:56.960 --> 00:50:00.500 Is this a people who will live by faith in God? 00:50:00.500 --> 00:50:04.880 And He's not leaving them to make up those answers blindly. 00:50:04.880 --> 00:50:11.400 He has shown very clearly that He is the God who is with them and the God who provides 00:50:11.400 --> 00:50:13.199 for them. 00:50:13.199 --> 00:50:17.779 So they have been following, well they've seen Him work these plagues of judgment and 00:50:17.779 --> 00:50:18.779 salvation. 00:50:18.779 --> 00:50:24.439 They've been following a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. 00:50:24.439 --> 00:50:29.339 If you were to turn back a couple of pages in your Bible, chapter 15, you would discover 00:50:29.339 --> 00:50:35.859 that He has turned bitter water into fresh water, helping the people to see that the Lord 00:50:35.859 --> 00:50:38.099 is their healer. 00:50:38.099 --> 00:50:47.259 In chapter 16, He has rained down bread from heaven, supplied birds to feed them. 00:50:47.259 --> 00:50:49.400 So He has shown that He is with them and for them. 00:50:49.400 --> 00:50:57.339 But now we find outrageously the people are testing the Lord. 00:50:57.339 --> 00:51:03.639 It's there in verse 2, Moses speaks to them, why did you put the Lord to the test? 00:51:03.639 --> 00:51:09.400 Verse 7, they tested the Lord saying, is the Lord among us or not? 00:51:09.400 --> 00:51:20.319 The demand for water, the question, why bring us out of Egypt just to let us die of thirst? 00:51:20.319 --> 00:51:26.139 At the heart of this quarreling and grumbling and testing is that they do not trust that 00:51:26.139 --> 00:51:28.599 God is with them and for them. 00:51:28.599 --> 00:51:36.159 They do not trust that He will keep His promise and that He will provide for them. 00:51:36.159 --> 00:51:42.539 Edmund Clowney, the Bible teacher, pictures this as a lawsuit, which I think is really 00:51:42.539 --> 00:51:44.779 important. 00:51:44.779 --> 00:51:47.159 We're brought into the courtroom. 00:51:47.159 --> 00:51:53.019 And here we have Israel bringing a case against their God. 00:51:53.019 --> 00:51:57.840 And the charge is, God, you have not kept your covenant promises. 00:51:57.840 --> 00:52:03.920 You have failed in your duty to be our Lord and our God. 00:52:03.920 --> 00:52:09.579 You have not provided for our needs. 00:52:09.579 --> 00:52:14.860 And we know that they are, as it were, giving a guilty verdict on God because look at verse 00:52:14.860 --> 00:52:15.860 4. 00:52:15.860 --> 00:52:19.519 Here is Moses and he is God's representative for them. 00:52:19.940 --> 00:52:22.660 And Moses cries out, what am I to do with these people? 00:52:22.960 --> 00:52:25.019 They are almost ready to 00:53:01.260 --> 00:53:05.199 And that made, at least here in the UK, it made the news. 00:53:05.199 --> 00:53:10.599 But recognize how much bigger a story we are dealing with here. 00:53:11.460 --> 00:53:21.480 Here are God's people saying of him, the Lord is not our king because he has failed our test. 00:53:23.179 --> 00:53:25.119 Now what are we to make of this? 00:53:25.199 --> 00:53:28.319 What lessons can we draw for ourselves? 00:53:28.419 --> 00:53:32.659 I want us to see three things that are wrong here. 00:53:32.659 --> 00:53:40.139 And perhaps three things that can also sometimes work out in our own thinking also. 00:53:40.299 --> 00:53:42.299 First of all, the test is wrong. 00:53:42.300 --> 00:53:52.420 Just to fast forward to Jesus' ministry, the beginning of his ministry, the Gospels record that as Jesus is baptized, 00:53:52.720 --> 00:53:55.440 to show he is God's promised and anointed one, 00:53:55.900 --> 00:53:58.960 that the Spirit leads him into the wilderness to be tempted. 00:53:59.760 --> 00:54:04.700 And one of those temptations involves him being taken up to the highest point of the temple. 00:54:04.699 --> 00:54:12.539 And the devil says to him, you'll throw yourself down and God will have to send angels to look after you. 00:54:14.879 --> 00:54:20.119 The devil is in some ways suggesting, here's the shortcut, Jesus, to glory and fame and honor. 00:54:20.960 --> 00:54:24.399 And Jesus says, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 00:54:24.400 --> 00:54:31.119 And so we need to understand the mindset that's wrong for Israel 00:56:12.260 --> 00:56:14.200 That's a promise that was for Israel. 00:56:15.480 --> 00:56:22.240 In the story of Exodus, God has by his grace and through his power saved them from slavery. so easy and so tempting to find our identity in our suffering, our struggles, our present circumstances. 00:57:14.179 --> 00:57:19.500 But instead, we must find our identity in Christ our Savior. certainly bring us home to be with himself. 00:58:19.420 --> 00:58:34.800 And it is so important for us to have that dominate our perspective on our lives, to count our blessings, to consider God's place of water which was also a place of deep thirst. 00:59:53.240 --> 00:59:59.619 As Jesus meets with that woman it becomes clear that her thirst is for a stable, secure relationship. 00:59:59.619 --> 01:00:05.019 She is thirsty for love and she's searched for it in multiple men and she's come up empty. 01:00:05.480 --> 01:00:12.000 And in response to her thirst Jesus declares I will give you living water. 01:00:12.000 --> 01:00:18.320 I can satisfy all your deepest longings. 01:00:19.320 --> 01:00:27.440 And so our text is really an invitation not to be too easily satisfied. 01:00:27.440 --> 01:00:31.200 To come to the Lord Jesus. 01:00:32.260 --> 01:00:36.000 To recognize that he is the end of the search. 01:00:37.139 --> 01:00:41.019 Because when we find him and receive life with 01:01:10.879 And maybe that seems unbelievable and outrageous to us. 01:01:11.079 --> 01:01:14.119 Until perhaps we recognize how easy it can be 01:01:14.119 --> 01:01:19.699 to stand in judgment over God as we look at what he's doing in our life or the life of others. 01:01:20.079 --> 01:01:23.699 We can easily presume that we know better and we can do better than God. 01:01:23.699 --> 01:01:26.619 And so I think we need to listen in with humility. 01:01:26.619 --> 01:01:31.139 And especially to recognize that if what happens first is shocking, 01:01:31.259 --> 01:01:34.500 that what comes next in many ways seems even more incredible. 01:01:34.500 --> 01:01:40.360 Because God's response isn't to judge them instantly for their sin and their rebellion, 01:01:40.360 --> 01:01:44.480 but rather he gives this gracious object lesson. 01:01:44.480 --> 01:01:51.639 Because he wants to show just how willing and able he is to care for his people. 01:01:51.639 --> elders, it's almost as if the jury is being assembled. 01:02:21.579 --> 01:02:23.419 And then we discover in verse 6, 01:02:24.139 --> 01:02:28.579 I will stand there before you by the rock of Horeb. the Lord among us or not? 01:02:39.039 --> 01:02:42.019 Here he is again graciously saying to them and to us, 01:02:42.019 --> 01:02:45.300 I am, I am among you. 01:02:46.980 --> 01:02:51.039 And next, Moses is commanded to act. 01:02:52.219 --> 01:02:53.519 Into verse 6. 01:02:53.840 --> 01:02:56.219 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. 01:02:57.119 --> 01:03:02.480 Strike the rock and water will come out of it for the people to drink. 01:03:02.559 --> 01:03:06.780 So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 01:03:06.780 --> 01:03:12.280 So that staff of judgment, it falls, it comes down. 01:03:12.740 --> 01:03:18.480 But notice it doesn't fall on the sinful rebel people. 01:03:19.600 --> 01:03:20.980 Where does it fall? 01:03:21.560 --> 01:03:23.180 It falls on the rock. 01:03:23.600 --> 01:03:27.440 God the rock bears the judgment. 01:03:27.440 --> 01:03:35.300 Standing in the dock in the place of covenant breakers, 01:03:35.460 --> 01:03:37.760 taking the punishment for sinners. 01:03:38.900 --> 01:03:41.139 And what happens next? 01:03:42.220 --> 01:03:44.639 Life-giving water pours out. 01:03:45.599 --> 01:03:49.820 The rock is struck and life flows out 01:03:49.820 --> 01:03:52.920 to an undeserving, ungrateful people 01:03:52.920 --> 01:03:58.080 in one more demonstration of God's great grace. 01:03:59.580 --> 01:04:03.880 To read the Bible is to discover that God teaches using visual aids. 01:04:04.460 --> 01:04:06.559 And this rock is a powerful one. 01:04:06.640 --> 01:04:08.180 So remember the test and the grumble. 01:05:07.160 don't be like Israel in the wilderness, 01:05:07.700 --> 01:05:09.360 lacking trust, lacking faith. 01:05:09.360 --> 01:05:12.019 Learn the lesson of the rock, 01:05:12.400 --> 01:05:15.740 the rock who is Christ. 01:05:17.660 --> 01:05:18.800 So I want us to think about 01:05:18.800 --> 01:05:20.660 these two lessons. 01:05:20.780 --> 01:05:21.620 The first lesson judgment 01:05:41.980 --> 01:05:43.460 and God bearing the penalty 01:05:43.460 --> 01:05:44.700 for covenant breakers 01:05:44.700 --> 01:05:45.900 on behalf of his people, 01:05:46.380 --> 01:05:47.900 God himself 01:05:47.900 --> 01:05:51.340 will come to bear the judgment 01:05:51.340 --> 01:05:52.820 for covenant breakers 01:05:52.820 --> 01:05:54.380 at the cross. 01:05:55.200 -->
