00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:21.539
 So Luke 22 is the longest chapter in what are very long chapters in Luke's Gospel. I don't know whether you've noticed that as you read the Bible in a year. You get to Luke and you think great and you've got these long chapters haven't you? But it's a chapter which at every point, from whatever angle you take, takes you to the crucifixion.

00:00:21.539 --> 00:00:40.439
 It's a chapter that comes to the end of the journey really, the long journey. You remember chapter 9 and verse 51. That verse where it spoke about Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem and it's been a slow and a long journey.

00:00:40.439 --> 00:00:54.539
 But now the temperature goes up. The exchanges become heated. There is a sense in one way where there's a sense of panic in this chapter. Almost breathing from the verses here.

00:00:55.659 --> 00:01:06.000
 And suddenly it would seem from one angle that everything in Jesus' life is out of control and that is why chapter 9 and verse 51 and what we'll see later on in tonight from later on in the chapter is so important.

00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:19.840
 Luke tells us that Jesus taught his disciples about the suffering he would experience at his death in Jerusalem and we're told that Jesus steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.

00:01:20.439 --> 00:01:33.340
 He understood that the days for his being taken up were drawing near. And those verses in the past function as a control. They function to alert us to the fact that nothing is out of control.

00:01:33.340 --> 00:01:46.140
 That nothing is out of control of our heavenly father in Jesus' life. He knows that the time for him not to be taken down but the time for him to be taken up is on the horizon.

00:01:47.219 --> 00:01:55.260
 And he does not die accidentally if you know the gospels at all. The Lord Jesus sets his face to go to Jerusalem.

00:01:55.260 --> 00:02:06.420
 And so he is conscious, on the one hand of his own profound commitment to die for our sins and to rise for our salvation.

00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:12.640
 The Lord Jesus is conscious that he has said he will die for his people's sins.

00:02:13.020 --> 00:02:20.939
 But he's also conscious that his sovereign father's hand is superintending everything that will now take place.

00:02:20.939 --> 00:02:30.740
 And it was well that it should be so. Because from the human point of view, it simply looks as if things are spiralling out of control.

00:02:31.699 --> 00:02:35.780
 That things are being taken out of the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:02:36.300 --> 00:02:41.900
 And it seems, doesn't it, at the start of Luke chapter 22 that he is being put into the hands of his enemies.

00:02:43.300 --> 00:02:48.759
 And many cruel hands come in at the start of Luke 22, literally to take hold of Jesus.

00:02:48.759 --> 00:02:55.759
 And what I want to do this morning is very simply to just look at three of those hands that are specifically mentioned.

00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:01.239
 The first, Jesus is put into the hands of the religious leaders.

00:03:02.439 --> 00:03:05.079
 And then he's put into the hands of one of his apostles.

00:03:06.719 --> 00:03:08.739
 And then thirdly, we see the hands of Satan.

00:03:10.079 --> 00:03:14.959
 Three hands joining in the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:16.340
 We're told here, aren't we?

00:03:16.340 --> 00:03:17.400
 We're looking for his tomb.

00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:26.719
 But the chief priests and the scribes, who had long been looking for an opportunity to put Jesus to death.

00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:28.819
 They were plotters and schemers.

00:03:29.159 --> 00:03:30.780
 They were shrewd politicians.

00:03:31.640 --> 00:03:33.640
 And probably cowards to boot.

00:03:33.939 --> 00:03:35.500
 And they were afraid of the crowd.

00:03:35.659 --> 00:03:37.879
 Such was the level of Jesus' popularity.

00:03:38.300 --> 00:03:39.819
 They feared the people.

00:03:39.819 --> 00:03:46.579
 And you notice at the end of the passage, Judas sought an opportunity to betray him to them.

00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:48.739
 In the absence of the crowd.

00:03:50.620 --> 00:03:55.139
 The high priest, the chief priest, there was one family that dominated the high priesthood of Jerusalem at the time.

00:03:56.280 --> 00:03:57.560
 One of them was Annas.

00:03:58.340 --> 00:04:02.120
 He'd been high priest for about 20 years until he'd been removed by the Roman government.

00:04:02.120 --> 00:04:10.319
 And while he'd been removed from office, he still wielded so much power that five of his sons became high priests.

00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:13.640
 And the present high priest was his son-in-law, Caiaphas.

00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:16.100
 And they were the Sadducees.

00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:19.480
 They were liberals, theologically.

00:04:20.340 --> 00:04:23.759
 We know from the Gospel, they denied a supernatural religion.

00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:26.980
 They were opposed to the message of the resurrection.

00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:30.939
 They were opposed to the message that Jesus had preached.

00:04:30.939 --> 00:04:40.100
 And interestingly, here we are told that the leading priests and the scribes, who were both Pharisees and Sadducees, are now plotting together.

00:04:41.060 --> 00:04:44.819
 They are now plotting together the destruction of the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:04:46.139 --> 00:04:47.540
 It's an interesting phenomenon, isn't it?

00:04:47.699 --> 00:04:55.459
 Later on in Luke's Gospel, we're told Herod and Pontius Pilate, sworn enemies, became friends that day.

00:04:57.079 --> 00:04:59.759
 And you actually see that in ordinary life.

00:05:00.939 --> 00:05:02.240
 And you see it in religious life.

00:05:03.560 --> 00:05:11.899
 When those who are opposed to one another link arms and make a common enemy out of someone.

00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:16.899
 And in this instance, they want to get rid of a common enemy, the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:05:18.019 --> 00:05:24.279
 Those different religious groups, they join hands to do away with the Lord Jesus.

00:05:24.279 --> 00:05:28.039
 It's one thing for Pontius Pilate and Herod to become friends.

00:05:28.099 --> 00:05:32.599
 But here is a very, very sinister grouping of religious leaders.

00:05:33.899 --> 00:05:42.519
 And now everything in their religious agenda takes second place to having the Lord Jesus Christ put on the cross.

00:05:43.719 --> 00:05:45.759
 In order that they might get rid of him.

00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:49.860
 And I say it's sinister because this isn't the first time that this happens.

00:05:50.899 --> 00:05:54.219
 You remember right at the start of when we started preaching on Luke's Gospel.

00:05:54.860 --> 00:05:56.579
 Jesus after his first sermon.

00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:00.980
 That because Jesus says, I actually am the focus of the Old Testament Scriptures.

00:06:01.319 --> 00:06:02.139
 They hate it.

00:06:02.139 --> 00:06:04.599
 And they want to destroy him.

00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:07.599
 And these religious leaders, they have waited.

00:06:07.959 --> 00:06:08.680
 And they have waited.

00:06:09.259 --> 00:06:11.459
 And they have waited patiently for three years.

00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:14.599
 They have waited for their opportunity to arrive.

00:06:14.600 --> 00:06:17.280
 And I want to say this to you this morning.

00:06:17.620 --> 00:06:24.920
 Religious leaders who do not love the Lord Jesus Christ often have amazing patience.

00:06:26.400 --> 00:06:27.600
 Amazing patience.

00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:33.540
 Because they know that their opportunity will come and they will get rid of the Lord Jesus.

00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:36.600
 And we should take note of that.

00:06:36.600 --> 00:06:46.580
 In the Christian church, the thing that distinguishes these religious leaders from the Lord Jesus is not the Bible.

00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:49.360
 They both have the Bible.

00:06:50.140 --> 00:06:50.900
 The same Bible.

00:06:51.580 --> 00:06:55.760
 They both read the same Bible but they saw very, very different things in it.

00:06:56.820 --> 00:07:05.060
 These leaders, by and large, they saw their Bible full of laws which they would lead the people to understand.

00:07:05.060 --> 00:07:09.199
 But the Lord Jesus read his Bible, his Old Testament Scriptures.

00:07:09.639 --> 00:07:15.100
 And Jesus saw a mirror of his own life and ministry and destiny.

00:07:15.740 --> 00:07:17.819
 They were marvelously reflected to him.

00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:25.920
 And there was a huge difference between the way that the leaders used the Bible and the way that the Lord Jesus used the Bible.

00:07:26.939 --> 00:07:31.420
 The leaders used the Bible for all practical purposes to maintain their leadership.

00:07:31.420 --> 00:07:36.640
 Their ministry was being the leaders of Israel.

00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:40.879
 Jesus' ministry was saving sinners.

00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:44.319
 And it is perennially true.

00:07:44.480 --> 00:07:46.120
 It has always been true.

00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:51.939
 And in the history of the professing Christian church, down through the ages, all over the world,

00:07:51.939 --> 00:07:56.160
 that when men and women are in a position of religious leadership,

00:07:56.939 --> 00:08:01.839
 without a passion and a compassion for the salvation of sinners,

00:08:02.199 --> 00:08:03.680
 there will come a point,

00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:07.240
 however subtly they cease,

00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:11.439
 they will speak warm words of the Lord Jesus,

00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:13.159
 they will want to do away with him.

00:08:13.279 --> 00:08:15.800
 We will see that today in the General Synod.

00:08:15.800 --> 00:08:21.199
 We will see very, very warm words about the Lord Jesus.

00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:24.259
 And yet they will cease to do away with him.

00:08:25.180 --> 00:08:26.319
 And do away with his words.

00:08:27.699 --> 00:08:29.000
 And it happened locally,

00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:30.980
 at the beginning of the Gospels,

00:08:31.080 --> 00:08:32.639
 and now it happens nationally,

00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:34.720
 at the end of our Saviour's ministry.

00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:37.039
 And then something happened.

00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:41.659
 That must have taken these chief priests and scribes by surprise.

00:08:41.659 --> 00:08:46.100
 It was the opportunity for which they had long been waiting.

00:08:47.559 --> 00:08:50.620
 But out of the very heart of Jesus' disciples,

00:08:51.679 --> 00:08:53.679
 crept Judas Iscariot.

00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:55.799
 To seal a bargain.

00:08:57.100 --> 00:08:59.579
 To seal a deal to portray Jesus with a handshake.

00:09:00.860 --> 00:09:02.399
 And then later in the garden with a kiss.

00:09:03.939 --> 00:09:06.959
 And if they had been contemporary religious leaders,

00:09:07.100 --> 00:09:07.919
 do you know what they would have said?

00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:10.419
 Do you know what would have been reported in the religious magazines?

00:09:11.659 --> 00:09:13.579
 It would have been described like this.

00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:17.439
 It would have been described as a remarkable providence of God.

00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:23.079
 It would have been described as God led us in this wonderful way.

00:09:25.159 --> 00:09:28.819
 Some of you have been in denominations where that is true.

00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.879
 Where there is hostility to the clear teaching of the Bible.

00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:39.460
 And people will cover it over by this.

00:09:39.620 --> 00:09:41.059
 They'll say, well, we were led by the Spirit.

00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:41.779
 The Spirit moved.

00:09:42.679 --> 00:09:44.539
 And we were led to make this decision.

00:09:45.799 --> 00:09:47.480
 Oh, the providence of God.

00:09:47.539 --> 00:09:49.240
 God worked in a wonderful way in the meeting.

00:09:49.320 --> 00:09:50.840
 And this is what we were led to believe.

00:09:51.539 --> 00:09:54.460
 And we need to follow the guidance of God.

00:09:56.340 --> 00:09:57.820
 But at the heart of the issue is this.

00:09:58.700 --> 00:09:59.960
 They want to do away with Jesus.

00:09:59.960 --> 00:10:06.259
 Are we really committed to the Lord Jesus?

00:10:07.720 --> 00:10:09.379
 To the salvation of sinners?

00:10:11.320 --> 00:10:12.240
 To their salvation?

00:10:12.340 --> 00:10:13.180
 To their transformation?

00:10:15.040 --> 00:10:17.580
 Or at the end of the day, with these religious leaders,

00:10:17.680 --> 00:10:19.639
 we would rather crucify him than bow to him.

00:10:21.180 --> 00:10:24.960
 We would rather do him away than trust him and love him.

00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:29.320
 And being a religious leader is no security, is it?

00:10:31.460 --> 00:10:33.940
 And so this is a really sobering reality, isn't it?

00:10:34.180 --> 00:10:36.480
 That it was the hands of the religious leaders

00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:40.320
 that crucified our Saviour.

00:10:41.700 --> 00:10:43.540
 And the opportunity they were given

00:10:43.540 --> 00:10:47.019
 as the hands of the religious leaders

00:10:47.019 --> 00:10:49.580
 stretched out to shake hands with the hands of an apostle.

00:10:51.040 --> 00:10:51.879
 An apostle.

00:10:51.879 --> 00:10:55.620
 Let me say it again.

00:10:55.700 --> 00:10:56.159
 An apostle.

00:10:58.360 --> 00:11:00.519
 The most, the highest office

00:11:00.519 --> 00:11:04.500
 that there's ever been in the Christian church.

00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:07.600
 Majestically higher,

00:11:08.500 --> 00:11:10.240
 if it is possible for you and I to believe,

00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:12.299
 than being the minister of IPC even.

00:11:13.100 --> 00:11:15.379
 Or being the moderator of the denomination.

00:11:16.980 --> 00:11:18.860
 The office of an apostle reserved

00:11:18.860 --> 00:11:20.500
 for those who have been eyewitnesses

00:11:20.500 --> 00:11:23.179
 the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:11:24.460 --> 00:11:26.360
 Judas who betrayed him was an apostle.

00:11:27.860 --> 00:11:28.360
 And you might think,

00:11:28.440 --> 00:11:29.519
 why am I calling him an apostle?

00:11:29.659 --> 00:11:30.759
 Well, because the New Testament does.

00:11:31.820 --> 00:11:33.580
 He was numbered among the twelve.

00:11:34.940 --> 00:11:37.080
 And not only numbered among the twelve,

00:11:38.820 --> 00:11:42.759
 but it is only in my vaguest, vaguest moments

00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:46.139
 that I think that I would have been able to recognise him

00:11:46.139 --> 00:11:47.840
 as a betrayer.

00:11:50.019 --> 00:11:51.659
 I think that the other disciples,

00:11:52.179 --> 00:11:54.439
 they didn't like people rising to the top,

00:11:54.519 --> 00:11:54.700
 did they?

00:11:54.720 --> 00:11:55.879
 You get that impression amongst them.

00:11:55.899 --> 00:11:57.319
 They didn't like people rising to the top.

00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:59.819
 And yet they made Judas the treasurer

00:11:59.819 --> 00:12:00.939
 of the apostolic band.

00:12:00.940 --> 00:12:03.660
 And do you remember in John's Gospel,

00:12:03.960 --> 00:12:05.960
 Jesus dismisses Judas from the room.

00:12:07.260 --> 00:12:08.400
 And John says this,

00:12:08.520 --> 00:12:09.740
 do you know what we were all thinking

00:12:09.740 --> 00:12:10.380
 at that point?

00:12:11.540 --> 00:12:13.900
 We all presumed that Judas had gone out

00:12:13.900 --> 00:12:15.420
 to do some kind of work of charity.

00:12:16.580 --> 00:12:17.520
 Around Passover time.

00:12:17.580 --> 00:12:18.780
 That he was going to give our money away

00:12:18.780 --> 00:12:19.480
 to save the poor.

00:12:19.940 --> 00:12:21.320
 The truth of the matter was,

00:12:21.380 --> 00:12:22.380
 Judas was an apostle.

00:12:22.940 --> 00:12:25.840
 But his heart was false to the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:12:25.840 --> 00:12:30.320
 What happened to the man who Jesus called?

00:12:30.580 --> 00:12:32.700
 Jesus knew all along he would betray him.

00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:35.620
 Incidentally, we're told that in the Gospels,

00:12:35.940 --> 00:12:37.700
 nothing takes Jesus by surprise.

00:12:38.840 --> 00:12:39.860
 What happened to him?

00:12:41.540 --> 00:12:43.120
 Try and think about what happened to him.

00:12:44.540 --> 00:12:46.100
 Try and get into the mindset.

00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:49.200
 And I think we have to use

00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:50.900
 the phrase that Paul uses

00:12:50.900 --> 00:12:53.280
 in 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 7.

00:12:53.279 --> 00:12:55.779
 That what you have in Judas

00:12:55.779 --> 00:12:57.659
 is really the mystery of sin.

00:12:59.039 --> 00:13:01.419
 It's the mystery of rebellion against God.

00:13:02.500 --> 00:13:04.919
 It's the rebellion of iniquity.

00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:07.240
 The mystery of lawlessness.

00:13:09.059 --> 00:13:10.799
 And it is a sort of mystery here.

00:13:10.899 --> 00:13:11.379
 Iniquity.

00:13:11.579 --> 00:13:13.220
 Sin is at work.

00:13:15.159 --> 00:13:16.259
 Small iniquity.

00:13:16.699 --> 00:13:17.259
 To start off with.

00:13:17.299 --> 00:13:17.899
 Small sin.

00:13:19.439 --> 00:13:21.639
 The kind of sin that you and I might say

00:13:21.639 --> 00:13:23.840
 just doesn't really matter.

00:13:25.559 --> 00:13:28.039
 So he was the treasure of the 12, wasn't he?

00:13:29.379 --> 00:13:31.659
 And he put his mucky little fingers into the bag.

00:13:32.779 --> 00:13:34.299
 It wasn't a great sin, was it?

00:13:36.319 --> 00:13:37.960
 To borrow a little from the bag.

00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:40.240
 One day I'll pay it back.

00:13:42.039 --> 00:13:43.299
 And yet the thing was this.

00:13:43.299 --> 00:13:48.079
 That it was sin.

00:13:49.659 --> 00:13:53.439
 And yet apparently he was never prepared to confess it.

00:13:53.979 --> 00:13:54.899
 To the Lord Jesus.

00:13:57.279 --> 00:14:00.019
 Jesus is the only one who could have forgiven him.

00:14:00.859 --> 00:14:03.439
 And spoken a word that would quieten his conscience.

00:14:03.819 --> 00:14:06.379
 And bring back to him the joy that he once would have known.

00:14:06.379 --> 00:14:09.779
 And in being a disciple of the Lord Jesus.

00:14:10.100 --> 00:14:11.480
 Instead of Judas.

00:14:12.220 --> 00:14:14.539
 Opening his heart to the Lord Jesus.

00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:17.840
 And confessing his little sin.

00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:22.019
 What Judas did is he closed his heart against Jesus.

00:14:23.539 --> 00:14:26.059
 And so inevitably that little sin.

00:14:26.779 --> 00:14:29.480
 Grew bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.

00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:30.799
 To the point.

00:14:32.299 --> 00:14:35.500
 That Judas then had a fundamental life choice.

00:14:35.620 --> 00:14:35.980
 Didn't he?

00:14:36.379 --> 00:14:40.159
 To make not just actually a life choice.

00:14:40.299 --> 00:14:41.759
 But an eternity choice.

00:14:42.279 --> 00:14:45.179
 Either I will confess my sin to the Lord Jesus.

00:14:46.340 --> 00:14:48.059
 Or I will end up betraying him.

00:14:50.419 --> 00:14:50.899
 And do you know what?

00:14:50.939 --> 00:14:52.980
 Judas' first sin was no bigger.

00:14:53.939 --> 00:14:56.139
 Than your first sin or my first sin.

00:14:57.460 --> 00:14:59.820
 And Judas' first sin of taking money from the bag.

00:14:59.899 --> 00:15:02.799
 Did not have cosmic significance in itself.

00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:10.339
 Than any sin I have done.

00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:10.339
 Than any sin I have done.

00:15:13.259 --> 00:15:16.500
 But if in my heart I refuse to confess to the Lord Jesus.

00:15:16.500 --> 00:15:22.460
 And I refuse to ask him for his pardon and deliverance from that sin.

00:15:22.460 --> 00:15:24.879
 And for his power to change.

00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:29.840
 That he is able to give to his people new life altogether.

00:15:29.840 --> 00:15:32.240
 And the great tragedy of Judas.

00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:33.539
 Surely is.

00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:36.720
 Was that he refused to seek saving grace.

00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:40.500
 He refused God's mercy.

00:15:40.500 --> 00:15:42.460
 In his life.

00:15:43.899 --> 00:15:45.039
 And I don't think.

00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:46.720
 I don't think I would have been able to recognise it.

00:15:47.919 --> 00:15:49.960
 And I doubt very much whether you.

00:15:50.600 --> 00:15:51.720
 Would have been able to either.

00:15:53.259 --> 00:15:55.679
 And that is why it's so important for you and I this morning.

00:15:55.759 --> 00:15:56.899
 To recognise ourselves.

00:15:59.539 --> 00:15:59.960
 Something.

00:16:00.100 --> 00:16:02.200
 Some unconfessed sin.

00:16:02.799 --> 00:16:03.820
 In your life.

00:16:03.820 --> 00:16:06.620
 Maybe you're a small.

00:16:06.760 --> 00:16:07.500
 Maybe you're a child.

00:16:07.620 --> 00:16:08.400
 Or you're a teenager.

00:16:08.540 --> 00:16:09.000
 You're an adult.

00:16:09.120 --> 00:16:10.840
 And you know there is some sin.

00:16:10.940 --> 00:16:13.020
 That is unconfessed in your life.

00:16:13.420 --> 00:16:14.879
 And you say it's a small thing.

00:16:15.400 --> 00:16:16.300
 It's forgivable.

00:16:18.140 --> 00:16:19.200
 But that's not the issue.

00:16:20.780 --> 00:16:21.620
 The issue is.

00:16:21.620 --> 00:16:22.220
 Is it forgiven?

00:16:24.820 --> 00:16:26.080
 And your sin.

00:16:26.800 --> 00:16:27.900
 Is not forgiven.

00:16:28.020 --> 00:16:29.280
 Because it is forgivable.

00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:32.379
 It is forgiven only.

00:16:32.539 --> 00:16:33.579
 Because I have confessed.

00:16:34.100 --> 00:16:35.179
 To the Lord Jesus.

00:16:35.360 --> 00:16:36.480
 And said to the Lord Jesus.

00:16:36.779 --> 00:16:37.379
 I did it.

00:16:38.500 --> 00:16:39.319
 And I'm sorry.

00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:41.539
 And Lord Jesus.

00:16:41.679 --> 00:16:42.639
 Forgive me and help me.

00:16:44.639 --> 00:16:45.799
 And instead of that.

00:16:45.879 --> 00:16:47.539
 Eventually the hand of the apostles.

00:16:47.799 --> 00:16:48.919
 Shook hands with the hands.

00:16:49.079 --> 00:16:50.600
 The hands of the religious leaders.

00:16:51.139 --> 00:16:52.279
 And a man who began.

00:16:52.779 --> 00:16:54.379
 By only deceiving himself.

00:16:54.379 --> 00:16:56.299
 If I say it only affects me.

00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:57.639
 Ended up.

00:16:57.959 --> 00:16:58.819
 Deceiving the whole.

00:16:58.820 --> 00:16:59.660
 Disciple band.

00:17:00.379 --> 00:17:01.520
 And betraying his saviour.

00:17:03.500 --> 00:17:05.000
 And then there is the third hand.

00:17:05.080 --> 00:17:05.299
 Isn't it?

00:17:05.320 --> 00:17:06.559
 It's not sinister of all.

00:17:08.360 --> 00:17:10.080
 You have the hands of the religious leader.

00:17:11.320 --> 00:17:12.220
 You have the hands of Judas.

00:17:13.299 --> 00:17:14.759
 And then in amazing words.

00:17:14.840 --> 00:17:16.259
 Can you see them in verse 3?

00:17:17.240 --> 00:17:18.440
 You have the hand of the devil.

00:17:20.100 --> 00:17:23.059
 Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot.

00:17:24.059 --> 00:17:25.660
 Who was of the number of the twelve.

00:17:25.660 --> 00:17:30.120
 Now if you're a person that marks your Bible.

00:17:30.220 --> 00:17:31.519
 If that's the kind of guy you are.

00:17:31.620 --> 00:17:32.660
 Or the kind of person you are.

00:17:33.460 --> 00:17:34.720
 Get your red pen out.

00:17:35.560 --> 00:17:37.620
 And draw a line from Luke 22.

00:17:38.180 --> 00:17:38.980
 Verse 3.

00:17:39.580 --> 00:17:40.860
 Right to the top of the page.

00:17:41.640 --> 00:17:43.900
 And draw it right the way back to Genesis 3.

00:17:44.040 --> 00:17:44.900
 Verse 15.

00:17:44.900 --> 00:17:48.280
 Because Genesis 3.

00:17:48.340 --> 00:17:49.860
 15 is God's promise.

00:17:49.920 --> 00:17:50.140
 Isn't it?

00:17:50.180 --> 00:17:51.180
 It is God's promise.

00:17:51.540 --> 00:17:52.660
 How it was all going to end.

00:17:54.820 --> 00:17:57.000
 How it was all going to come to consummation.

00:17:57.500 --> 00:17:58.620
 Genesis chapter 3.

00:17:58.720 --> 00:17:59.540
 In verse 15.

00:17:59.680 --> 00:18:01.780
 Speaks of this age long conflict.

00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:04.800
 There will be between the seed of the serpent.

00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:06.740
 The evil one.

00:18:07.259 --> 00:18:08.559
 And the seed of the woman.

00:18:09.740 --> 00:18:12.240
 And that will come to grand climax.

00:18:13.019 --> 00:18:16.339
 When the serpent himself bruises the heel.

00:18:16.819 --> 00:18:17.700
 Of the individual.

00:18:18.119 --> 00:18:18.940
 The seed of the woman.

00:18:20.180 --> 00:18:21.119
 And that individual.

00:18:21.599 --> 00:18:24.379
 Having his heel bruised.

00:18:24.460 --> 00:18:26.960
 He will crush the head of the serpent.

00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:28.839
 And that is what is going on here.

00:18:28.839 --> 00:18:32.399
 Satan is coming very near.

00:18:33.699 --> 00:18:37.159
 And he is actually entering into the life of Judas Iscariot.

00:18:37.559 --> 00:18:38.939
 As an instrument of destruction.

00:18:40.679 --> 00:18:41.419
 Does that mean.

00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:43.439
 That Judas could have said.

00:18:43.799 --> 00:18:45.240
 The devil made me do it.

00:18:47.579 --> 00:18:48.319
 By the way.

00:18:48.359 --> 00:18:49.659
 Have you ever heard anyone say that to you?

00:18:50.159 --> 00:18:52.079
 How the devil makes people do things.

00:18:53.639 --> 00:18:55.159
 The devil made me do it.

00:18:56.519 --> 00:18:58.419
 But when your five year old son says that to you.

00:18:58.420 --> 00:18:59.440
 You don't put up with that.

00:18:59.480 --> 00:18:59.700
 Do you?

00:19:00.060 --> 00:19:00.960
 You don't put up with that.

00:19:03.600 --> 00:19:04.240
 You don't say.

00:19:04.320 --> 00:19:05.060
 Well that's fine.

00:19:05.120 --> 00:19:05.880
 The devil made you do it.

00:19:05.940 --> 00:19:06.500
 He made you do it.

00:19:06.820 --> 00:19:08.180
 You are completely out of control.

00:19:08.279 --> 00:19:08.860
 You are a robot.

00:19:09.120 --> 00:19:09.259
 No.

00:19:09.340 --> 00:19:09.440
 No.

00:19:09.480 --> 00:19:09.580
 No.

00:19:09.580 --> 00:19:10.320
 You don't say that.

00:19:11.720 --> 00:19:12.500
 You say to them.

00:19:12.560 --> 00:19:12.720
 Don't you.

00:19:13.400 --> 00:19:14.460
 My son or my daughter.

00:19:14.820 --> 00:19:16.220
 The devil is very powerful.

00:19:16.680 --> 00:19:18.940
 But the devil can't make you do things against your will.

00:19:19.980 --> 00:19:21.039
 You did this.

00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:21.800
 You did it.

00:19:23.220 --> 00:19:24.279
 Because at the end of the day.

00:19:24.279 --> 00:19:25.300
 You were willing to do it.

00:19:25.380 --> 00:19:26.600
 Don't let anyone ever say to you.

00:19:26.640 --> 00:19:27.720
 Oh the devil made me do it.

00:19:28.420 --> 00:19:31.000
 You have a responsibility.

00:19:31.840 --> 00:19:33.840
 For complying with that temptation.

00:19:35.900 --> 00:19:39.460
 He has responsibility for whatever temptation he puts in your way.

00:19:39.860 --> 00:19:42.160
 But you have the responsibility for complying with it.

00:19:43.820 --> 00:19:44.680
 And doing it.

00:19:45.980 --> 00:19:47.740
 And that was the mystery of sin.

00:19:47.840 --> 00:19:48.759
 The mystery of iniquity.

00:19:48.759 --> 00:19:51.539
 But there was real sin here.

00:19:51.599 --> 00:19:52.460
 There was real iniquity.

00:19:52.619 --> 00:19:53.339
 Real rebellion.

00:19:55.099 --> 00:19:57.160
 It began with something very very small.

00:19:58.140 --> 00:19:59.960
 That he wasn't prepared to confess.

00:20:00.140 --> 00:20:01.799
 He wasn't prepared to own up to.

00:20:02.180 --> 00:20:03.200
 He kept it quiet.

00:20:03.480 --> 00:20:05.039
 And it ended like this.

00:20:07.259 --> 00:20:08.200
 And actually you know.

00:20:08.279 --> 00:20:10.059
 We need to take notice of that.

00:20:10.059 --> 00:20:13.419
 Because it's so easy for you and I isn't it.

00:20:13.480 --> 00:20:18.019
 To regard Judas as some kind of extraordinary kind of individual.

00:20:20.019 --> 00:20:21.419
 And we all need to know that.

00:20:22.099 --> 00:20:23.940
 The beginning of backsliding.

00:20:24.039 --> 00:20:26.399
 The beginning of sliding back as a Christian.

00:20:27.440 --> 00:20:29.940
 And the beginning of complete apostasy.

00:20:30.200 --> 00:20:32.399
 Where you turn away from Jesus Christ.

00:20:32.480 --> 00:20:34.179
 The beginning of both things is exactly the same.

00:20:34.180 --> 00:20:38.299
 And there is no way to tell.

00:20:38.560 --> 00:20:41.000
 When somebody begins to backslide from the Lord Jesus.

00:20:41.440 --> 00:20:43.100
 That they are just backsliding.

00:20:43.900 --> 00:20:45.720
 Because it looks or that just looks like backsliding.

00:20:45.779 --> 00:20:46.220
 It doesn't.

00:20:48.720 --> 00:20:50.680
 When it began in Judas' life.

00:20:52.420 --> 00:20:53.440
 This is where.

00:20:55.160 --> 00:20:56.220
 This is where his.

00:20:57.140 --> 00:20:58.820
 Unconfessed sin eventually ended him up.

00:21:01.420 --> 00:21:03.279
 So it is possible to be an apostle.

00:21:05.180 --> 00:21:06.740
 To reject the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:21:09.299 --> 00:21:11.380
 Actually Jesus had forewarned his disciples.

00:21:11.580 --> 00:21:11.720
 Didn't he?

00:21:11.740 --> 00:21:12.320
 Do you remember that?

00:21:12.720 --> 00:21:15.160
 Chilling end to the Sermon on the Mount.

00:21:15.799 --> 00:21:16.920
 In Matthew chapter 7.

00:21:18.320 --> 00:21:19.080
 And it ends.

00:21:19.200 --> 00:21:19.560
 Listen to this.

00:21:19.660 --> 00:21:21.160
 With a picture of the day of judgment.

00:21:21.320 --> 00:21:23.080
 When we will all stand before the Lord Jesus.

00:21:23.240 --> 00:21:24.420
 And there will be church goers.

00:21:24.480 --> 00:21:25.440
 And conference goers.

00:21:25.759 --> 00:21:28.140
 And they will say to the Lord Jesus on the last day.

00:21:28.480 --> 00:21:31.240
 Jesus I have done wonderful things in your name.

00:21:31.240 --> 00:21:35.220
 I have cast out demons in your name.

00:21:35.420 --> 00:21:37.440
 I have done miracles in your name.

00:21:37.839 --> 00:21:40.740
 I have spoken in the name of the Lord.

00:21:40.740 --> 00:21:46.500
 And Jesus will say to me.

00:21:46.620 --> 00:21:47.539
 Get away from me.

00:21:47.779 --> 00:21:48.920
 I never knew you.

00:21:50.720 --> 00:21:52.099
 Now notice those words.

00:21:52.200 --> 00:21:53.299
 I never knew you.

00:21:54.880 --> 00:21:56.720
 Was that true of Judas Iscariot?

00:21:56.799 --> 00:21:57.539
 Think about it for a minute.

00:21:57.539 --> 00:22:00.960
 In a sense it was true.

00:22:01.019 --> 00:22:01.460
 Wasn't it?

00:22:01.700 --> 00:22:02.099
 Of Judas.

00:22:02.180 --> 00:22:02.359
 Why?

00:22:02.700 --> 00:22:05.259
 Because when somebody hides themselves.

00:22:06.039 --> 00:22:07.279
 As they really are from you.

00:22:07.299 --> 00:22:08.039
 You don't know them.

00:22:09.579 --> 00:22:10.539
 There are people isn't it?

00:22:10.639 --> 00:22:11.759
 There are people.

00:22:11.940 --> 00:22:13.159
 And they keep you at arm's length.

00:22:13.259 --> 00:22:13.680
 And people say.

00:22:13.740 --> 00:22:14.339
 Do you know them?

00:22:14.460 --> 00:22:14.859
 And you say.

00:22:14.920 --> 00:22:15.799
 Well actually no.

00:22:15.839 --> 00:22:16.519
 I don't know them.

00:22:16.599 --> 00:22:18.819
 Because they keep me at arm's length.

00:22:19.519 --> 00:22:20.759
 You never get to know them.

00:22:20.980 --> 00:22:22.779
 Because you only get to know.

00:22:22.779 --> 00:22:24.279
 What they want you to know.

00:22:25.359 --> 00:22:25.899
 About themselves.

00:22:25.980 --> 00:22:27.139
 And that is true here with Judas.

00:22:27.539 --> 00:22:30.960
 He had never said to the Lord Jesus.

00:22:31.099 --> 00:22:31.579
 Lord Jesus.

00:22:31.740 --> 00:22:33.000
 You know me through and through.

00:22:34.440 --> 00:22:36.200
 And so in the most intimate way.

00:22:36.420 --> 00:22:37.480
 Have all of me.

00:22:37.599 --> 00:22:38.980
 Take every room of my life.

00:22:40.539 --> 00:22:42.599
 Show me even more of my needs.

00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:43.599
 And my sins.

00:22:44.180 --> 00:22:46.000
 Scratch away the surface Lord.

00:22:46.420 --> 00:22:47.579
 So that I may be forgiven.

00:22:47.639 --> 00:22:49.420
 In the very depths of my being.

00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:51.680
 And I might know the wonders of your grace.

00:22:51.680 --> 00:22:53.460
 And the joy of pardon.

00:22:53.680 --> 00:22:54.159
 And freedom.

00:22:54.539 --> 00:22:55.019
 But instead.

00:22:55.099 --> 00:22:55.519
 Do you know what he did?

00:22:55.579 --> 00:22:56.639
 He kept Jesus at arm's length.

00:22:57.539 --> 00:22:58.899
 And he defended himself.

00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:04.339
 It reminds me of a really great illustration.

00:23:04.500 --> 00:23:05.159
 By C.S. Lewis.

00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:06.000
 In Me and Christianity.

00:23:07.299 --> 00:23:07.899
 It's so good.

00:23:07.960 --> 00:23:08.659
 Let me read it to you.

00:23:09.000 --> 00:23:09.539
 He says this.

00:23:09.619 --> 00:23:10.480
 When I was a child.

00:23:10.639 --> 00:23:11.759
 I often had truthache.

00:23:13.019 --> 00:23:13.379
 Truthache.

00:23:15.759 --> 00:23:17.460
 And I knew that if I went to my mother.

00:23:17.579 --> 00:23:18.579
 She would give me something.

00:23:18.700 --> 00:23:20.559
 That would deaden the pain for that night.

00:23:21.019 --> 00:23:22.039
 And let me get to sleep.

00:23:22.039 --> 00:23:24.700
 But I did not go to my mother.

00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:27.960
 At least not until the pain had become very bad.

00:23:29.180 --> 00:23:31.099
 And the reason I did not go was this.

00:23:31.319 --> 00:23:33.480
 I did not doubt she would give me the aspirin.

00:23:34.359 --> 00:23:35.920
 And I knew she would do something else.

00:23:36.859 --> 00:23:39.319
 I knew she would take me to the dentist next morning.

00:23:39.559 --> 00:23:41.539
 And I could not get what I wanted out of her.

00:23:41.579 --> 00:23:42.720
 Without getting something more.

00:23:42.779 --> 00:23:43.779
 Which I did not want.

00:23:43.779 --> 00:23:46.879
 I wanted immediate relief from pain.

00:23:47.160 --> 00:23:50.539
 But I couldn't get it without my teeth being permanently set right.

00:23:50.839 --> 00:23:52.200
 And I knew these dentists.

00:23:52.740 --> 00:23:55.839
 I knew they started fiddling about with all sorts of other teeth.

00:23:56.019 --> 00:23:57.519
 Which had not yet begun to ache.

00:23:57.960 --> 00:23:59.740
 They would not let sleeping dogs lie.

00:24:00.019 --> 00:24:01.359
 If you gave them an L.

00:24:01.740 --> 00:24:03.660
 Now an L is a measurement we don't use any longer.

00:24:03.779 --> 00:24:05.000
 It's three foot nine inches.

00:24:05.279 --> 00:24:05.920
 That's an L.

00:24:05.920 --> 00:24:07.920
 If you give them an inch.

00:24:08.200 --> 00:24:10.039
 They take three foot nine inches.

00:24:10.039 --> 00:24:13.960
 Because they are determined that you will be well.

00:24:14.099 --> 00:24:15.500
 Now do you see what he's illustrating?

00:24:17.700 --> 00:24:19.740
 My dentist is an Iranian lady.

00:24:20.799 --> 00:24:21.500
 She's kind.

00:24:22.099 --> 00:24:22.940
 She's lovely.

00:24:23.779 --> 00:24:24.559
 She's gracious.

00:24:25.599 --> 00:24:26.399
 She's sweet.

00:24:27.200 --> 00:24:28.839
 She gives stickers to my children.

00:24:30.759 --> 00:24:32.359
 But if you've got toothache.

00:24:33.399 --> 00:24:34.519
 Or decay.

00:24:35.379 --> 00:24:36.759
 Or gingivitis.

00:24:37.619 --> 00:24:38.879
 She turns into a monster.

00:24:40.039 --> 00:24:41.240
 That you have nightmares about.

00:24:44.119 --> 00:24:45.799
 And even if your father is a dentist.

00:24:45.899 --> 00:24:46.879
 Or your mother is a dentist.

00:24:47.339 --> 00:24:48.839
 You may be very lovely people, isn't it?

00:24:49.519 --> 00:24:50.700
 But if you've got decay.

00:24:51.319 --> 00:24:52.339
 Or gingivitis.

00:24:53.500 --> 00:24:54.339
 Or toothache.

00:24:55.099 --> 00:24:55.920
 They turn into a monster.

00:24:56.079 --> 00:24:56.839
 And it's like that with us.

00:24:59.940 --> 00:25:01.159
 You know, don't you, with Jesus.

00:25:01.279 --> 00:25:02.579
 If you confess this.

00:25:03.839 --> 00:25:05.059
 He's going to take all of you.

00:25:05.059 --> 00:25:10.960
 And apparently that is what Judas Iscariot was not prepared to give.

00:25:10.960 --> 00:25:17.079
 There's something wonderful about this section of the gospel.

00:25:17.620 --> 00:25:18.220
 As we see it.

00:25:18.279 --> 00:25:19.140
 Something very moving.

00:25:21.380 --> 00:25:23.400
 That as we go through Luke 22 and 23.

00:25:23.480 --> 00:25:24.220
 I hope you'll be with us.

00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:27.579
 Jesus takes more and more centre stage.

00:25:29.059 --> 00:25:31.299
 And there are all sorts of people who gather round him.

00:25:31.299 --> 00:25:32.840
 With their plotting and their scheming.

00:25:32.839 --> 00:25:35.379
 But there is a subplot of two disciples.

00:25:36.679 --> 00:25:38.359
 Two of the apostle bands.

00:25:38.539 --> 00:25:40.480
 Who start out as giants in story.

00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:41.720
 In the drama.

00:25:43.299 --> 00:25:44.339
 And from one point of view.

00:25:44.399 --> 00:25:46.199
 They both sin horrendously.

00:25:46.559 --> 00:25:48.379
 And one betrays Jesus.

00:25:49.220 --> 00:25:51.799
 And the other with words of blasphemy.

00:25:51.959 --> 00:25:52.980
 Denies Jesus.

00:25:52.980 --> 00:25:57.220
 And the one who betrayed Jesus.

00:25:57.860 --> 00:26:00.460
 When his eyes were opened to it.

00:26:00.720 --> 00:26:02.640
 Instead of coming to Jesus.

00:26:02.940 --> 00:26:04.079
 And saying to Jesus.

00:26:04.220 --> 00:26:05.259
 Oh Jesus, Jesus.

00:26:05.440 --> 00:26:06.559
 Please forgive me.

00:26:06.880 --> 00:26:08.559
 He would rather die.

00:26:08.940 --> 00:26:10.039
 Than ask for forgiveness.

00:26:12.400 --> 00:26:14.140
 He would rather die.

00:26:15.460 --> 00:26:16.660
 Than ask for forgiveness.

00:26:18.539 --> 00:26:20.259
 And the other man who was named Simon Peter.

00:26:20.380 --> 00:26:21.559
 Went out into the darkness.

00:26:21.559 --> 00:26:23.659
 When his eyes were opened to what he'd done.

00:26:23.980 --> 00:26:25.919
 He went into the darkness of the Jerusalem night.

00:26:25.980 --> 00:26:27.919
 And he cried like a baby.

00:26:29.379 --> 00:26:30.480
 He cried like a baby.

00:26:30.539 --> 00:26:32.059
 That the Lord Jesus would forgive him.

00:26:32.319 --> 00:26:34.259
 He denied his saviour three times.

00:26:34.339 --> 00:26:36.039
 And you remember at the end of John's gospel.

00:26:36.379 --> 00:26:38.059
 The Lord Jesus comes to him three times.

00:26:38.139 --> 00:26:39.339
 And asks him Simon Peter.

00:26:39.460 --> 00:26:40.200
 Do you love me?

00:26:40.500 --> 00:26:41.440
 Do you love me?

00:26:41.980 --> 00:26:42.960
 Do you love me?

00:26:43.879 --> 00:26:44.819
 To restore him.

00:26:46.379 --> 00:26:48.419
 And that is the basic issue this morning.

00:26:51.559 --> 00:26:53.220
 Do you really love Jesus?

00:26:56.359 --> 00:26:58.379
 Do you want your sins forgiven?

00:27:01.119 --> 00:27:02.720
 It's a no brainer isn't it?

00:27:02.779 --> 00:27:03.319
 That question.

00:27:04.519 --> 00:27:05.539
 But it's not.

00:27:07.299 --> 00:27:09.539
 It's not if you are a hard hearter.

00:27:09.539 --> 00:27:15.180
 If you refuse to humble yourself.

00:27:16.579 --> 00:27:18.700
 And actually you would rather die.

00:27:19.799 --> 00:27:20.920
 Than ask for forgiveness.

00:27:22.759 --> 00:27:24.420
 I cannot understand it.

00:27:25.599 --> 00:27:27.279
 I cannot understand it.

00:27:28.680 --> 00:27:30.799
 It is the mystery of sin.

00:27:30.799 --> 00:27:33.599
 That some of you here.

00:27:33.799 --> 00:27:34.799
 Who maybe know.

00:27:34.919 --> 00:27:36.440
 Something of the beauty and the glory.

00:27:36.579 --> 00:27:38.980
 On the wonder of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:27:40.159 --> 00:27:41.879
 And you know the glory of heaven.

00:27:41.940 --> 00:27:43.159
 That will go on for eternity.

00:27:43.319 --> 00:27:44.759
 You know that there is new creation.

00:27:44.879 --> 00:27:45.519
 You know what it is.

00:27:45.680 --> 00:27:48.240
 You know the truth of a clean conscience.

00:27:48.399 --> 00:27:50.359
 And yet you would rather die.

00:27:51.559 --> 00:27:52.299
 Than have forgiveness.

00:27:52.299 --> 00:27:56.220
 Thank God.

00:27:56.339 --> 00:27:57.539
 That he is the kind of saviour.

00:27:57.639 --> 00:27:59.720
 That he is more full of grace.

00:28:00.359 --> 00:28:01.559
 Than you are of sin.

00:28:04.180 --> 00:28:05.720
 And the marvellous, marvellous thing.

00:28:05.799 --> 00:28:07.480
 And this is beyond my ability.

00:28:07.539 --> 00:28:08.119
 And your ability.

00:28:08.200 --> 00:28:10.879
 To express kind of adequate eloquence.

00:28:12.740 --> 00:28:15.079
 In the midst of all these dark hands.

00:28:16.019 --> 00:28:17.299
 In order to crush him.

00:28:17.299 --> 00:28:22.159
 He is in the process of crushing the head of a serpent.

00:28:22.559 --> 00:28:22.940
 The devil.

00:28:24.859 --> 00:28:27.279
 In order that all of those who today.

00:28:27.399 --> 00:28:28.159
 Will come to him and say.

00:28:28.220 --> 00:28:29.440
 Lord Jesus I have failed.

00:28:29.940 --> 00:28:30.759
 I have stumbled.

00:28:31.200 --> 00:28:32.079
 I have fallen.

00:28:32.779 --> 00:28:33.539
 I have sinned.

00:28:33.639 --> 00:28:35.279
 And I need you so badly.

00:28:35.279 --> 00:28:38.119
 Could you please just possibly forgive me.

00:28:40.519 --> 00:28:41.460
 Hear him say.

00:28:41.839 --> 00:28:42.639
 Possibly forgive you.

00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:46.039
 I died to save you from your sin.

00:28:47.299 --> 00:28:49.379
 I died so that you can be forgiven.

00:28:51.639 --> 00:28:53.599
 And so we come this morning don't we.

00:28:54.680 --> 00:28:55.680
 And we say.

00:28:56.700 --> 00:28:58.500
 Have mercy on me.

00:29:00.139 --> 00:29:02.319
 Blot out all my sins.

00:29:03.680 --> 00:29:06.659
 Wash away all my iniquity.

00:29:08.119 --> 00:29:09.740
 And restore to me the joy.

00:29:11.059 --> 00:29:12.019
 Of my salvation.

00:29:14.639 --> 00:29:16.220
 You are doing that I hope aren't you.
