00:04:05.159 --> 00:04:10.540 When Jesus had finished instructing his 12, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 00:04:11.080 --> 00:04:12.540 Jesus is about the business. 00:04:12.539 --> 00:04:18.159 And then in verse 2, something interesting happens. 00:04:18.159 --> 00:04:25.360 And so verses 2 through 6 is a little section about how Jesus responds to John the Baptist. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.219 John the Baptist was in prison. 00:04:28.599 --> 00:04:30.719 Now you may be wondering, when did he go to prison? 00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:37.820 If you flip back into your Bibles to Matthew 4.12, you'll see after Jesus is tempted in the wilderness, 00:04:38.500 --> 00:04:41.780 he comes through it and he hears that John had been arrested. 00:04:42.940 --> 00:04:44.660 So what was he arrested for? 00:04:44.900 --> 00:04:48.580 Well, if you flip back to your right in Matthew chapter 14, you see why. 00:04:49.540 --> 00:04:51.860 John the Baptist was doing his prophetic thing. 00:04:51.860 --> 00:04:55.220 There was the leader of the province of the time. 00:04:55.300 --> 00:04:56.020 His name was Herod. 00:04:56.199 --> 00:04:57.639 And he did a major no-no. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.379 What he did was he took his brother's wife to himself. 00:05:02.840 --> 00:05:05.800 His brother's wife happened to be, her name was Herodias. 00:05:06.660 --> 00:05:11.480 And so what Herod did is he took his brother's wife, Herodias, to himself. 00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:13.120 He was an adulterer. 00:05:13.480 --> 00:05:17.500 And so what John the Baptist did was he's like, hey, Bubby, you don't do that. 00:05:18.699 --> 00:05:20.439 He's fulfilling his prophetic office. 00:05:21.860 --> 00:05:23.240 He's calling this guy to task. 00:05:24.379 --> 00:05:25.300 He said, don't do that. 00:05:25.379 --> 00:05:27.420 And you know what happens as a result of him doing it? 00:05:28.379 --> 00:05:29.540 He gets thrown in jail. 00:05:30.840 --> 00:05:32.020 You know who's behind it? 00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:33.840 Herodias. 00:05:35.840 --> 00:05:39.100 And so what we see happening here at the get-go is John is in prison. 00:05:39.580 --> 00:05:42.819 He's in prison for doing his prophetic thing. 00:05:43.420 --> 00:05:46.180 He's doing it for righteousness' sake. 00:05:47.520 --> 00:05:48.620 But he's in prison. 00:05:48.620 --> 00:05:52.639 And while he's in prison, we learn that he hears about something. 00:05:52.740 --> 00:06:01.459 Now, when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, very interesting little phrase there, the deeds of the Christ. 00:06:01.800 --> 00:06:06.420 Now, what we're going to see is that John's wavering a little bit on who Jesus is. 00:06:06.740 --> 00:06:09.079 And so it's not John that's saying this is the Christ. 00:06:09.319 --> 00:06:12.360 It's Matthew, the writer of the gospel, who's saying this is the Christ. 00:06:12.360 --> 00:06:13.980 Because it's all about Jesus. 00:06:14.100 --> 00:06:17.680 And what you're going to see is this chapter is all about Jesus. 00:06:18.920 --> 00:06:21.780 But John hears the deeds of Jesus. 00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:27.180 And so he sends his disciples to Jesus to ask him a question. 00:06:28.180 --> 00:06:28.980 What's the question? 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:32.720 Are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another? 00:06:33.500 --> 00:06:37.139 Basically, he's saying, are you the Messiah or somebody else coming to fill that bill?
