The sense was, if we had this experience all the time, well, that would be the good life. We were convinced that verse 2 was what made life worth living. 00:00:46.679 --> 00:00:59.579 Chapter 6, verse 2, wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires. If we could have this all the time, this is living. 00:01:02.259 --> 00:01:11.120 And those are the elements, aren't they? Wealth, possessions, and honor, lacking nothing that we desire. Those are the elements of the good life that is held out to us in Western culture today. 00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:18.200 This is living. You'll be able to say that if you're prosperous, comfortable, and respected. 00:01:19.520 --> 00:01:27.939 Then, of course, if you come from a less individualistic culture than the West, you might define the good life more along the lines of verse 3. Have a look. For you, it's a large family and many years to enjoy them. 00:03:20.819 A world where we're often perplexed by what God is doing. 00:03:21.339 --> 00:03:26.599 A world where even as Christians, in relationship with the living God, we find ourselves confused. Children and long life are Old Testament pictures of prosperity and blessing. 00:07:39.780 --> 00:07:45.939 However, without the ability to enjoy them, the man, Solomon says, would have been better being stillborn. 00:07:45.939 --> 00:07:53.899 If there's no satisfaction in the blessing, then what's the point of the blessing? 00:07:55.420 --> 00:07:58.879 What is the point of the years spent 00:09:42.799 Chandler from Friends. 00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:44.179 He lacked nothing he desired. 00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:49.100 But all that he did, all that that did for him was leave him anxious and 00:16:16.259 --> 00:16:18.819 Wisdom preserves the life of man who has it. 00:16:18.820 --> 00:16:26.840 And these proverbs open us up to wisdom by highlighting for us a series of relative goods.
