And so the pinnacle or the thing that we set our sights on may not be the same. 00:02:05.159 --> 00:02:11.859 But I wonder if we all, deep in our hearts, have something out there, a success that we prosperity in my work and harmony in my relationships. 00:03:41.539 --> 00:03:49.879 And I raise good kids and I'm a reputable person in my society and in my community. 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:55.199 00:05:39.560 And as we look at this, what I want, my greatest desire for you is that you will see this psalm points us to a greater joy and a greater satisfaction, a greater sense of purpose and think it has. 00:07:16.699 --> 00:07:18.639 There's only one point in this whole psalm. 00:07:19.220 --> 00:07:20.480 So that's the good news. 00:07:20.519 --> 00:07:22.000 If you think we're going to get out early. 00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:23.459 However, there's one point. 00:07:23.560 --> 00:07:25.500 There are three implications and two applications. 00:07:25.699 --> 00:07:26.879 So we'll be here for a little while. 00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:30.699 But I think it's going to be a rich exploration of this psalm together. 00:07:30.840 --> 00:07:35.180 So one point, three implications, and two applications as we explore it. 00:07:35.180 --> 00:07:38.939 The one point, the main point of this psalm is this. 00:07:39.639 --> 00:07:40.980 It is in verse four. 00:07:41.639 --> 00:07:48.660 At the desire, what the psalmist is calling God's people to see and to recognize and to long for is 00:07:48.660 --> 00:07:54.280 that the nations would be glad in God and in His saving work. 00:07:54.279 --> 00:08:02.119 That they would sing for joy because of what God has done and is doing in the world. 00:08:03.039 --> 00:08:07.139 Now, you may ask, why do I think this is the point of the passage? 00:08:07.239 --> 00:08:10.479 So for some of you who love Bible study, I'm going to give you a few hints. 00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:14.399 There are some structural reasons that I think why this is the key. 00:08:14.819 --> 00:08:14.959 Okay. 00:08:15.259 --> 00:08:17.579 First of all, I started. 00:08:17.779 --> 00:08:20.659 Did you notice that verse three and verse five are the same? 00:08:21.719 --> 00:08:22.639 Look at them again. 00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:25.019 They're exactly the same verse. 00:08:25.620 --> 00:08:27.199 And you just think, why is that there? 00:08:27.379 --> 00:08:29.479 And one of the options could be it's a refrain. 00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:33.080 And surprisingly, the commentators, lots of them say, well, this is a refrain. 00:08:33.379 --> 00:08:39.120 But a refrain, like in a hymn or a song, you have a verse and a chorus and a verse and a refrain 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:40.199 and a verse and a refrain. 00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:41.919 And there's that kind of a pattern. 00:08:42.100 --> 00:08:43.860 But that doesn't seem to make sense here. 00:08:44.279 --> 00:08:47.819 It doesn't fit that because the refrain doesn't, that pattern doesn't fit. 00:08:48.299 --> 00:08:49.980 So you think, okay, why else is it here? 00:08:49.980 --> 00:08:55.920 Well, as you look at it again, you realize it's actually bracketing verse four and it's 00:08:55.920 --> 00:08:56.740 pointing to it. 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:01.300 And actually, there's a structure that sort of, it starts out here in verse one and it 00:09:01.300 --> 00:09:03.720 points like an arrow to verse four. 00:09:03.800 --> 00:09:05.700 And verse four is sort of the big idea. 00:09:06.100 --> 00:09:11.240 And then you see beyond that sort of a mirroring of the same ideas going back. 00:09:11.240 --> 00:09:12.659 So three and five are the same. 00:09:12.759 --> 00:09:17.440 And then verses one and two and verses six and seven actually mirror each other thematically. 00:09:17.539 --> 00:09:20.440 And I'll show you that as we go along and look at it. 00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:23.840 And so I think structurally, the psalm points to it. 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:28.680 Another really neat thing is that Hebrew poetry is usually written in couplets, right? 00:09:28.759 --> 00:09:32.019 So each verse will have two parts, part A and part B. 00:09:32.019 --> 00:09:38.480 So if you look at this psalm, verses one, two, and three are all couplets, A, B, A, B, A, B. 00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:42.539 And verses five, six, and seven are all couplets, A, B, A, B, A, B. 00:09:44.039 --> 00:09:46.600 But verse four is A, B, C. 00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:48.579 And it just sort of stands out. 00:09:49.220 --> 00:09:51.360 And most of us don't even stop and think about this. 00:09:51.419 --> 00:09:52.039 But you know what? 00:09:52.079 --> 00:09:56.279 If you were Hebrew, if you were reading this or hearing this in the original language, 00:09:56.340 --> 00:09:57.399 that would strike you. 00:09:57.399 --> 00:09:59.819 The poetry in the meter would strike you. 00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:06.819 And so anyway, this is why I believe that this is the central idea. 00:10:07.139 --> 00:10:11.259 Not only that, but thematically, there's sort of a continuity that I think runs through it. 00:10:11.559 --> 00:10:13.139 And we're going to explore that. 00:10:13.939 --> 00:10:20.620 So the question is, if this is the big idea, that the nations would be glad because of what God is doing, 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:24.480 his saving work in the world, why one, it says, 00:10:30.420 --> 00:10:34.340 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us. 00:10:34.539 --> 00:10:38.360 Now, if you were a Hebrew, if you were a part of the nation of Israel, 00:10:38.759 --> 00:10:43.879 these words would resonate like nothing you've ever seen. 00:10:43.899 --> 00:10:49.120 Because these words were part of a blessing that was given to God's people 00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:54.740 as they were leaving Mount Sinai after God had given them the Ten Commandments 00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:58.419 and given them the law, after he delivered them from Egypt before then, 00:10:58.820 --> 00:11:02.019 through the overcoming the Egyptians, parting the Red Sea, 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:05.139 all these great tremendous works of saving his people. 00:11:05.860 --> 00:11:07.080 And then he gave them their law. 00:11:07.179 --> 00:11:09.139 And as they're about to leave, 00:11:09.580 --> 00:11:14.200 numbers one through ten is the final instructions before they set off to the promised land. 00:11:14.200 --> 00:11:19.360 And in the middle of it is this blessing given to Aaron the priest to bless the people. 00:11:20.060 --> 00:11:21.940 The Lord bless you and keep you. 00:11:23.500 --> 00:11:27.580 The Lord be gracious to you and make his face to shine upon you. 00:11:30.980 --> 00:11:32.980 And it's this beautiful blessing. 00:11:33.620 --> 00:11:36.600 And these words resonate here. 00:11:36.600 --> 00:11:44.540 But the psalmist then takes it and says that this blessing is meant to have a purpose. 00:11:45.300 --> 00:11:48.740 And he's speaking this because if you read through the rest of the Old Testament, 00:11:49.720 --> 00:11:51.460 God's people didn't always get this. 00:11:52.040 --> 00:11:57.920 They thought we are blessed so that we can be prosperous and happy and successful. 00:11:57.920 --> 00:12:03.879 So that we can live in the promised land and God will give us success in everything we set our hearts to. 00:12:03.879 --> 00:12:07.580 And we will be satisfied in being blessed by God. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:10.799 And they thought that was the whole point. 00:12:12.899 --> 00:12:18.600 When you read the New Testament, Jesus comes right up against this over and over again. 00:12:19.480 --> 00:12:23.019 That there are people in the first century, first century Jewish people who thought, 00:12:23.639 --> 00:12:27.860 this isn't, God's purposes can't be for broader than this. 00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:29.059 It's about Israel. 00:12:29.059 --> 00:12:35.919 But this psalm reminds us that this has never been God's intention. 00:12:36.959 --> 00:12:37.919 You see verse 2? 00:12:38.459 --> 00:12:39.599 Do you see the so that? 00:12:39.739 --> 00:12:41.339 That it begins as a
