food in order to know whether you like it or not. 00:06:49.459 --> 00:06:55.459 There are some foods that people say I don't like them, but they've never really tasted them properly. 00:06:55.459 --> see that the Lord is good. 00:07:32.459 --> 00:07:35.459 How do we know that the Lord is good? 00:07:35.459 --> 00:07:38.459 Well, because we come to know Himself. 00:07:38.459 --> 00:07:40.459 We come to taste Him. 00:07:40.459 --> 00:07:43.459 That means really we come to know Him for ourselves. 00:07:43.459 --> 00:07:46.459 We come to know what He's like. 00:07:46.459 --> 00:07:49.459 We come in prayer to Him and reading the Bible. 00:07:49.459 --> 00:07:51.459 We come to find out about Him. 00:07:51.459 --> 00:07:56.459 But especially we come to know Him in a relationship with Him. 00:07:56.459 --> 00:07:58.459 Just like we are related one to another. 00:07:58.459 --> 00:08:01.459 Just like you relate to parents or grandparents. 00:08:01.459 --> 00:08:04.459 Spiritually, we have a relationship with God. 00:08:04.459 --> 00:08:09.459 And it's through that relationship with God that we come every day to taste 00:08:09.459 --> 00:08:11.459 and to see that He is good. 00:08:11.459 --> 00:08:13.459 To find out that He is good for us. 00:08:13.459 --> 00:08:17.459 That He's always good in Himself in everything that He does. 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:24.459 Now, you might have a book at home where your mums, dads even, 00:08:24.459 --> 00:08:27.459 and grandparents might have a book with recipes. 00:08:27.459 --> 00:08:35.460 Pictures, usually in these books, of the food that you can prepare following the directions in the book. 00:08:35.460 --> 00:08:40.460 But if you look at a picture there, let's say it was a plate of mushrooms, 00:08:40.460 --> 00:08:42.460 and I had never tasted mushrooms before. 00:08:42.460 --> 00:08:45.460 And you looked at that plate of mushrooms and they're beautifully presented, 00:08:45.460 --> 00:08:48.460 you would say, oh, that looks really good. 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:53.460 Or else you might have a picture there that say, hmm, not so sure about that. 00:08:53.460 --> 00:08:56.460 I don't think that would really be very nice, very tasty. 00:08:56.460 --> 00:08:58.460 But how will I know unless I've tasted it? 00:08:58.460 --> 00:09:01.460 And so it's like that with God as well. 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:05.460 The Bible gives us a description of God. 00:09:05.460 --> 00:09:10.460 In other words, you get pictures of God from what you find in the Bible. 00:09:10.460 --> 00:09:14.460 But you need to taste and to see that He is good. 00:09:14.460 --> 00:09:18.460 It's the same for all of us as adults as for you children as well. 00:09:18.460 --> 00:09:24.460 When you come to know Him yourself, when you come to trust in Him, to taste what He's like, 00:09:24.460 --> 00:09:26.460 then you'll know that He's really good. 00:09:26.460 --> 00:09:28.460 And that's what you're learning, isn't it? 00:09:28.460 --> 00:09:34.460 In Sunday school and at tweenies and at home or in church services like this, 00:09:34.460 --> 00:09:38.460 we're trying to present what the Bible says about God 00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:48.460 so that you and I will come to say for ourselves to other people, oh, taste and see that God is good. 00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:51.460 So today, taste and see that God is spiritual truth. 00:30:14.779 --> 00:30:17.299 Images of spiritual life in different ways. 00:30:17.299 --> 00:30:20.079 Think of Isaiah chapter 5. 00:30:20.700 --> 00:30:24.700 God is saying that Israel is his vineyard. 00:30:25.460 --> 00:30:30.019 And he goes there through to teach about their need to turn back to himself. 00:30:30.720 --> 00:30:35.779 Jeremiah chapter 4 calling upon Israel to plow up their fallow ground. 00:30:36.019 --> 00:30:39.399 A ground that's been left unused for some time. 00:30:39.579 --> 00:30:42.299 Spiritually that's a neglect of course. 00:30:42.299 --> 00:30:47.460 And they're being asked to or demanded God demands them to plow up that fallow ground. 00:30:47.919 --> 00:30:50.000 See to it that they repent of their sins. 00:30:50.819 --> 00:31:06.579 --> 00:31:07.799 Well known words of Jesus. 00:31:07.799 --> 00:31:12.399 Jesus I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser. 00:31:12.460 --> 00:31:18.919 And then he goes on to speak about the relationship of the branches to the vine as he teaches the disciples there. 00:31:19.519 --> 00:31:23.680 And the passage we have here is a passage about a fig tree. 00:31:23.899 --> 00:31:25.680 It's not about the vineyard as such. 00:31:26.220 --> 00:31:30.240 It's about the fig tree that was planted in this vineyard. 00:31:30.240 --> 00:31:41.779 It's obviously fertile soil because otherwise they wouldn't have planted vines there for the culture, for the viniculture, for the production of grapes. 00:31:42.380 --> 00:31:50.299 But in this vineyard, as very often was and still is the case, the owner of the vineyard had planted a fig tree. 00:31:50.299 --> 00:31:58.740 Making use of all the space possible in the vineyard and between the rows of vines planting this fig tree. 00:32:00.180 --> 00:32:12.579 And that had immediate application of course to the Jews in Jesus' time as Jesus was speaking to them or teaching them about the privileges that they had had as a people. 00:32:12.579 --> 00:32:17.259 And that's really the essence of the lesson from this passage today. 00:32:18.480 --> 00:32:29.519 Spiritual privileges and advantages and the use or not use that --> 00:32:45.600 They had come to know God, this God of the covenant. 00:32:46.140 --> 00:32:49.180 They had come to know this God who had created the heavens and the earth. 00:32:49.560 --> 00:32:51.779 This God who had entered into covenant with them. 00:32:52.120 --> 00:32:58.080 This God who had taught them through the prophets, through the days of the Old Testament, all into the New Testament. 00:32:58.720 --> 00:33:00.560 They were the vineyard of the Lord. 00:33:01.440 --> 00:33:03.060 And as they were the vineyard of the Lord, 00:33:03.059 --> 00:33:08.099 So the Lord was looking for them to be productive in their lives spiritually, 00:33:08.279 --> 00:33:11.700 to bring forth the kind of fruit that honored Him, 00:33:12.059 --> 00:33:16.940 the kind of fruit that showed they had made proper use of their advantages and privileges. 00:33:18.259 --> 00:33:22.740 And we're applying that today to ourselves because that's really what the passage is about. 00:33:23.000 --> 00:33:29.059 It's not there just to teach us a history lesson about what Jesus said to the Jews and about the Jews. 00:33:29.059 --> 00:33:34.539 We have to translate this into our own present experience, our own present situation. 00:33:35.659 --> 00:33:36.859 It's a portrait, really. 00:33:36.980 --> 00:33:42.039 We're following through with our series of Scripture portraits portrait of the church 00:33:49.899 --> 00:33:55.159 and the gospel privileges that you and I have as belonging to that church visibly. 00:33:55.980 --> 00:33:58.559 The gospel advantages that He has given you. 00:33:58.559 --> 00:34:04.779 In other words, we've been planted so favorably in our lives in relation to the gospel, 00:34:04.899 --> 00:34:08.599 in relation to the church of God, that today God is saying to us, 00:34:08.880 --> 00:34:10.679 You are essentially my vineyard. 00:34:10.980 --> 00:34:12.559 This is where I have planted you. 00:34:13.159 --> 00:34:16.159 But especially we're focusing on this fig tree, 00:34:16.639 --> 00:34:20.920 because this is really what Jesus set before the people of the day. 00:34:21.420 --> 00:34:24.360 Here is this fig tree in this fertile ground, 00:34:24.360 --> 00:34:27.720 surrounded by vines bearing grapes. 00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:31.340 And yet this fig tree is fruitless. 00:34:32.240 --> 00:34:33.079 It is barren. 00:34:34.079 --> 00:34:37.880 It's not making the use of the ground that it ought to. 00:34:38.720 --> 00:34:40.500 It doesn't have any figs. 00:34:41.460 --> 00:34:44.760 And so the Lord is using that of an imagery, 00:34:45.140 --> 00:34:48.180 just solemnly telling us today that it's possible 00:34:48.179 --> 00:34:52.779 to actually enjoy many advantages and many privileges in the gospel 00:34:52.779 --> 00:34:56.139 and not bear the fruit that God is looking for, 00:34:57.039 --> 00:35:02.779 not bear the fruit that God Himself requires of us as human beings. 00:35:03.440 --> 00:35:05.839 So here are our two headings today. 00:35:05.840 --> 00:35:11.620 First of all, God has planted us in fertile soil. 00:35:12.840 --> 00:35:18.680 Secondly, therefore, God expects us to bear fruit for Him.
