00:00:59.099 --> 00:01:05.519 And one of the most written about figures in the Scripture. 00:01:06.379 --> 00:01:13.599 Sixty-six chapters of the Old Testament refer to David, and that's more than, I think, any other Old Testament character. 00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:17.859 And he's referred to at least 59 times in the New Testament. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:21.579 So whenever God does something like that, it demands our attention. 00:01:21.819 --> 00:01:30.459 So the first message was basically about David's unique relationship with God and how we can look to that and emulate that by faith. 00:02:08.439 --> 00:02:18.639 This is a very familiar story, but I pray that the Lord uses the time today to show you some things that you might not have seen before and show it to you freshly. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:26.939 But 3,000 years ago, in the valley of Elah, westward of Bethlehem in the hill country of Judah, 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:36.379 a massive man named Goliath of Gath stepped out to defy the armies of Israel and to defy Israel's God. 00:02:36.379 --> 00:02:47.159 And for 40 days, he berated the Israelites, heaping shame on them because no one was trusting in God enough to actually go out and fight him to the death. 00:02:47.159 --> 00:02:49.939 And it's one of the most well-known in the Bible. 00:02:50.039 --> 00:02:53.180 I've already explained, like it's one of my girl's favorite stories now. 00:02:54.020 --> 00:03:02.500 And David shows himself here better qualified to be the leader of the nation than even Saul does, who should be the example. 00:03:03.300 --> 00:03:05.819 He steps out to be the nation's champion. 00:03:05.819 --> 00:03:12.959 So, just really quickly, it's always just good to sort of define things, clarify things. 00:03:13.099 --> 00:03:22.500 Most of you are good Bible readers and you know this, but many believe the story of David and Goliath just simply to be a story of personal courage, 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:26.060 self-confidence against overwhelming odds. 00:03:26.060 --> 00:03:33.520 David is seen as the archetype of the ultimate underdog, like an Old Testament Rocky Balboa, so to speak, 00:03:33.580 --> 00:03:40.840 and standing up against the arrogant and the powerful, self-confident, independent, brave young man 00:03:40.840 --> 00:03:46.039 who will stand up and fight against things and defy the convention of the day, right? 00:03:46.039 --> 00:03:52.219 Relying on his own strength and abilities rather than conform to what the norm is. 00:03:52.659 --> 00:04:00.479 So, the popular story, as we all know, is get out there and face your giants, your fears, right? 00:04:01.359 --> 00:04:04.719 Because the heroically courageous always come out on top. 00:04:04.799 --> 00:04:06.019 Go out and face your giants. 00:04:06.159 --> 00:04:10.079 Throw the stones of faith and take down your giants. 00:04:10.079 --> 00:04:14.159 And a lot of well-meaning pastors and authors have written about this, 00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:18.180 but ultimately, I don't really believe that's what this story is about. 00:04:18.779 --> 00:04:20.920 It's true that David was courageous. 00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:22.620 That's an essential thing. 00:04:23.139 --> 00:04:29.500 But his courage was a derivative, a byproduct of something else. 00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:36.240 It was being empowered by God's mountain and the other one's on the other. 00:07:58.279 --> 00:08:07.779 So, in warfare, what that means is whoever moves first has a disadvantage because they could risk envelopment and they're looked down in this valley and saw two Iron Age armies drawn up against each other, banging their shields and their swords, trying to intimidate the other side. 00:17:19.240 --> 00:17:26.560 It must
