was no confidence that anyone had that there was going to be infrastructure development, 00:01:34.679 --> 00:01:39.399 that new buildings were going to go up, that anything was going to happen in this area of town. 00:01:40.599 --> 00:01:43.819 And so it was actually, when Rachel and I came home, 00:01:43.879 --> 00:01:46.920 it was about five years later that we were able to go back for a visit. 00:01:46.920 --> 00:01:52.680 And we went to this area of town and it was amazing the transformation that we saw. 00:01:53.640 --> 00:01:58.540 Because fields had been cleared and now there were with a mall and a theater and a Starbucks and a KFC and a Burger King and a Pizza Hut. 00:02:09.460 --> 00:02:13.300 All the crown jewels of American culture were now at their fingertips. 00:02:14.740 --> 00:02:18.780 And so it was amazing to think about what had happened in this short amount of time, 00:02:18.860 --> 00:02:23.420 where people had no assurance that anything would ever happen in this part of the town. 00:02:23.500 --> 00:02:27.219 There was now evidence of the progress that had been made. 00:02:28.140 --> 00:02:31.319 And so that's what we're going to be looking at in this passage today. 00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:35.740 The assurance that Paul has in the work of Christ. 00:02:35.740 --> 00:02:40.180 Even in the midst of his own imprisonment, persecution on the rise, in Philippians, 00:04:18.040 --> 00:04:19.560 looking at Paul's introduction. 00:04:20.319 --> 00:04:22.259 And as is common in many of his letters, 00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:25.079 after that brief introduction comes a few verses 00:04:25.079 --> 00:04:29.620 of thanksgiving and prayer for whatever church he's addressing. 00:04:30.019 --> 00:04:32.139 And so we see that that's happening here as well. 00:04:32.399 --> 00:04:34.939 And we see at first glance this deep affection 00:04:34.939 --> 00:04:38.860 that Paul has for the church at Philippi. 00:04:38.860 --> 00:04:43.660 And we see here that it's not just this affection and this joy 00:04:43.660 --> 00:04:46.139 just isn't based on what they're on doing. 00:04:46.259 --> 00:04:48.220 I mean, it's not that he's just saying, 00:04:48.379 --> 00:04:50.199 hey guys, you are doing great, I love you, 00:04:50.240 --> 00:04:52.420 and I thank you for your work here, 00:04:52.600 --> 00:04:55.020 and just keep on keeping on. 00:04:56.160 --> 00:04:58.120 No, we see that his thanksgiving and joy 00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:00.319 is rooted far deeper. 00:05:01.020 --> 00:05:03.139 The crux of the passage is really in verse 6. 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:05.540 This is the basis of Paul's assurance, 00:05:05.660 --> 00:05:08.740 the basis of all that he's saying to the church at Philippi. 00:05:08.860 --> 00:05:11.139 When he says, I am sure of this. 00:05:12.040 --> 00:05:14.160 And so this is going to be our focus today, 00:05:14.280 --> 00:05:16.699 thinking about the assurance that Paul has. 00:05:17.020 --> 00:05:18.360 We're going to start in verse 6 00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:19.980 and spend most of our time there, 00:05:20.100 --> 00:05:23.780 but also work our way back to beginning of this passage as 00:05:37.620 --> 00:05:40.420 And so let's look then at the basis of Paul's assurance. 00:05:40.880 --> 00:05:42.860 Let's reread verse 6 together. 00:05:43.880 --> 00:05:44.820 And I am sure of this, 00:05:44.900 --> 00:05:47.000 that he who began a good work in you 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:48.580 will bring it to completion 00:05:48.580 --> 00:05:50.740 at the day of Jesus Christ. 00:05:50.740 --> 00:05:53.500 And so the first question we ask is, 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:54.600 well, what is this good work? 00:05:55.100 --> 00:05:57.259 Paul had been talking to the church at Philippi 00:05:57.259 --> 00:05:59.879 and was commenting on their good work, right? 00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:00.280 How they were, 00:06:00.540 --> 00:06:02.120 they had defended the gospel well, 00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:03.500 how they had love for one another. 00:06:03.500 --> 00:06:05.980 But Paul isn't talking about the work of the church there. 00:06:06.019 --> 00:06:07.460 He's not talking about his own work. 00:06:07.540 --> 00:06:07.879 We say, 00:06:08.300 --> 00:06:11.600 he says that he who began a good work in you, 00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:15.100 that he obviously is referring to God. 00:06:15.960 --> 00:06:16.540 And as we see, 00:06:16.620 --> 00:06:19.640 this isn't just a one-time act of God 00:06:19.640 --> 00:06:22.120 in the hearts and lives of his people. 00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:23.960 It's really this ongoing work. 00:06:24.020 --> 00:06:26.140 And so we really see it occur in three phases 00:06:26.140 --> 00:06:27.360 that Paul talks about here. 00:06:27.800 --> 00:06:30.580 We could think about it at God's work at conversion, 00:06:31.220 --> 00:06:32.660 God's continuing work, 00:06:33.200 --> 00:06:35.020 and the completion of God's work. 00:06:35.439 --> 00:06:37.660 And so I want to think about each of them individually. 00:06:38.120 --> 00:06:38.680 Paul says here, 00:06:38.760 --> 00:06:40.740 he who began a good work in you, 00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:44.040 this work at the point of conversion, 00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:46.680 if we go back to the book of Acts, 00:06:46.740 --> 00:06:48.860 this records a lot of what happened 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:50.000 in the New Testament church, 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:52.600 the missionary journeys that Paul and others went on. 00:06:52.900 --> 00:06:54.860 And so in Acts 16, 00:06:55.480 --> 00:06:58.320 it records Paul coming to Philippi for the first time 00:06:58.320 --> 00:06:59.260 and what happens there, 00:06:59.520 --> 00:07:01.939 the first converts that we see in this city. 00:07:03.200 --> 00:07:05.900 And so Acts 16, verse 13, it says this, 00:07:06.740 --> 00:07:07.780 and on the Sabbath day, 00:07:07.840 --> 00:07:09.920 we went outside the gate to the riverside 00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:11.939 where we supposed there was a place of prayer. 00:07:11.939 --> 00:07:14.639 And we sat down and spoke to the woman 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:15.540 who had come together. 00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:18.459 And one who heard us was a woman named Lydia 00:07:18.459 --> 00:07:20.360 from the city of Thyatira, 00:07:21.100 --> 00:07:23.480 a seller of purple goods who was a worshiper of God. 00:07:23.939 --> 00:07:26.620 And the Lord opened her heart to pay attention 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:28.519 to what was said by Paul. 00:07:29.699 --> 00:07:32.379 And so we see here this very first convert in Philippi, 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:33.579 this woman named Lydia. 00:07:34.259 --> 00:07:37.379 But it's interesting how Luke records her conversion. 00:07:37.379 --> 00:07:41.199 It doesn't say that Lydia chose to believe the words of Paul 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:43.779 or to understand the gospel on her own. 00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:47.279 It says, no, the Lord opened her heart to pay attention. 00:07:48.680 --> 00:07:51.399 And so it was the work of God in Lydia's life 00:07:51.399 --> 00:07:53.579 and the lives of other believers in Philippi 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:55.600 that brought about change, 00:07:55.779 --> 00:07:57.719 that brought about conversion in their life. 00:07:58.060 --> 00:07:59.639 Paul explains this in many of his letters. 00:07:59.800 --> 00:08:01.360 In Ephesians chapter 2, 00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:05.840 he says that we were dead in our trespasses 00:08:05.840 --> 00:08:06.819 and in our sins, 00:08:06.819 --> 00:08:10.080 but we were made alive with Christ. 00:08:10.400 --> 00:08:12.720 It is by grace you have been saved through faith 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:14.040 and that not of yourselves, 00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:15.580 it is a gift of God, 00:08:15.960 --> 00:08:18.720 not of works so that no one can boast. 00:08:19.660 --> 00:08:21.920 And so we see this point of conversion, 00:08:22.040 --> 00:08:24.160 the work that God does in our hearts, 00:08:24.220 --> 00:08:25.639 in the hearts of these Philippians 00:08:25.639 --> 00:08:27.540 is all about him. 00:08:27.540 --> 00:08:29.140 If we think about, 00:08:29.340 --> 00:08:32.399 we go back to maybe middle school time 00:08:32.399 --> 00:08:33.800 or whenever you had science class 00:08:33.800 --> 00:08:34.920 and you might have learned about 00:08:34.920 --> 00:08:36.759 Newton's laws of motion, 00:08:36.920 --> 00:08:38.120 you know that his first law of motion 00:08:38.120 --> 00:08:41.300 is that an object at rest stays at rest 00:08:41.300 --> 00:08:43.600 unless acted upon by an outside force. 00:08:44.379 --> 00:08:45.320 And so this book here, 00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:46.960 you know, Bible we said on this table, 00:08:47.060 --> 00:08:48.740 there's nothing in that Bible itself 00:08:48.740 --> 00:08:50.580 that is going to allow that Bible to move 00:08:50.580 --> 00:08:53.279 unless it's moved by an outside force. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:56.860 And so the same is true in our own lives. 00:08:57.539 --> 00:09:00.500 Without Christ, we are dead. 00:09:02.059 --> 00:09:05.740 We possess no abilities to make ourselves alive. 00:09:06.379 --> 00:09:08.500 And so it's only by the power of Christ 00:09:08.500 --> 00:09:11.279 in our lives to give us eyes to see 00:09:11.279 --> 00:09:12.120 and ears to hear, 00:09:12.199 --> 00:09:14.919 give us hearts that we can receive the gospel, 00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:16.439 the grace of God. 00:09:17.899 --> 00:09:19.519 Even Martin Luther says that faith 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:21.559 is like an empty hand. 00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:24.439 It's only an instrument for receiving. 00:09:24.639 --> 00:09:26.000 Faith itself is passive. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:28.580 It is something that is given to us as well by God. 00:09:29.899 --> 00:09:32.960 And so this is something that can bring us joy 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:35.600 when we think about God's work in our lives 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:37.059 at the point of our conversion, 00:09:37.340 --> 00:09:38.379 if you were a believer, 00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:41.740 to recognize that it wasn't of our own doing. 00:09:42.279 --> 00:09:45.259 Because how horribly unsure would our salvation be 00:09:45.259 --> 00:09:46.779 if it was up to us? 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:49.419 We think of human will and tendency, 00:09:49.580 --> 00:09:51.200 how hot and cold we can be, 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:52.799 how certain we can be, 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:54.719 and then uncertain at times. 00:09:56.099 --> 00:09:59.639 How our opinions can change constantly. 00:09:59.859 --> 00:10:01.620 So if our conversion, 00:10:02.079 --> 00:10:04.719 if our salvation was based on our decision ability, 00:10:04.859 --> 00:10:06.459 if it was based on our own initiative, 00:10:06.699 --> 00:10:09.179 we certainly have no assurance at all. 00:10:10.179 --> 00:10:12.859 But this is what our assurance comes from. 00:10:13.139 --> 00:10:14.459 And this is what Paul tells us, 00:10:14.459 --> 00:10:18.019 that it was God who willed your salvation. 00:10:18.019 --> 00:10:22.159 And so this is the same thing that Jesus said 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:23.439 to his disciples 00:10:23.439 --> 00:10:26.179 at their last supper before his crucifixion. 00:10:26.659 --> 00:10:26.960 He said, 00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:28.120 you didn't choose me, 00:10:28.740 --> 00:10:29.699 but I chose you 00:10:29.699 --> 00:10:33.220 and appointed you to go and bear fruit. 00:10:35.100 --> 00:10:36.639 Charles Spurgeon famously said that, 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:38.199 I believe the doctrine of election 00:10:38.199 --> 00:10:39.399 because I'm quite certain 00:10:39.399 --> 00:10:41.079 that if God had not chosen me, 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:43.319 I should never have chosen him. 00:10:43.320 --> 00:10:46.660 And so for the church at Philippi 00:10:46.660 --> 00:10:47.560 and for us today, 00:10:47.740 --> 00:10:49.400 our conversion is evidence 00:10:49.400 --> 00:10:51.960 of God's work in our lives. 00:10:52.280 --> 00:10:53.180 And so this is something 00:10:53.180 --> 00:10:54.540 that we can rejoice at, 00:10:54.600 --> 00:10:55.580 to see that it was Christ 00:10:55.580 --> 00:10:57.760 and Christ alone who has saved us. 00:10:57.840 --> 00:10:58.400 Our salvation, 00:10:58.640 --> did in you, 00:11:17.980 --> 00:11:19.500 the work of God in you. 00:11:20.020 --> 00:11:20.500 And so yes, 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:22.440 Christ died on the cross for us. 00:11:22.520 --> 00:11:23.800 He secured our salvation. 00:11:23.960 --> 00:11:25.520 We are justified before the Father. 00:11:26.460 --> 00:11:27.960 But his work is in us. 00:11:28.020 --> 00:11:29.280 He gives us the desire began a good work in you 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:49.020 will bring it to completion. 00:11:50.140 --> 00:11:52.560 So there's work in that bringing. 00:11:53.500 --> 00:11:55.380 We look forward to the 00:12:30.259 --> 00:12:32.120 when Paul refers to the church as saints. 00:12:33.059 --> 00:12:34.419 He's calling them holy ones, 00:12:34.519 --> 00:12:35.799 those who are set apart. 00:12:36.059 --> 00:12:36.979 So as holy ones, 00:12:37.039 --> 00:12:39.439 we know that that is our identity in Christ. 00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:40.120 We are holy, 00:12:40.220 --> 00:12:42.240 but we're also
