lot about suffering. 00:00:23.719 --> 00:00:26.199 He was a lawyer and a property owner. 00:00:26.519 --> 00:00:29.080 He had a wife and five children. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.520 And tragedy struck speech. 00:02:20.740 --> 00:02:22.919 This is the last night 00:02:22.919 --> 00:02:26.159 that Jesus and the disciples would spend together 00:02:26.159 --> 00:02:27.639 before Jesus' death. 00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:31.199 They'd gathered in a room to eat the Passover meal, 00:02:31.479 --> 00:02:34.039 and it's a disturbing start to the night. 00:02:34.959 --> 00:02:36.419 What we read last week 00:02:36.419 --> 00:02:37.779 is that right at the beginning, 00:02:38.099 --> 00:02:41.019 Jesus stoops down to wash the disciples' feet. 00:02:41.279 --> 00:02:45.759 It's a deeply uncomfortable, offensive experience. 00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:49.839 Jesus then goes on to tell his disciples 00:02:49.839 --> 00:02:51.659 that one of them is going to betray him. 00:02:54.259 --> somewhere they can't follow. 00:03:28.820 --> 00:03:30.680 He's about to go to the cross, 00:03:30.860 --> 00:03:32.020 to his death. 00:03:32.020 --> 00:03:35.560 And the disciples are distinctly troubled 00:03:35.560 --> 00:03:37.080 by the way Jesus is acting. 00:03:37.080 --> 00:03:38.580 Here is their Savior, 00:03:39.180 --> 00:03:41.020 the secret to their salvation, 00:03:41.460 --> 00:03:44.520 the fulfillment of all the Scripture's promises, 00:03:45.140 --> 00:03:46.660 and he's about to leave? 00:03:47.480 --> 00:03:49.760 This is not what they'd expected. 00:03:51.040 --> 00:03:52.100 And so this week, 00:03:52.160 --> 00:03:54.040 we pick up in John 14. 00:03:54.320 --> 00:03:56.120 Halfway through the farewell meal, 00:03:56.120 --> 00:03:59.300 and Jesus speaks Believe, 00:04:08.599 --> 00:04:09.719 you believe in God, 00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:11.900 believe also in me. 00:04:13.300 --> 00:04:15.640 The words Jesus speaks, 00:04:16.819 --> 00:04:18.620 the words Jesus is about to speak, 00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:20.319 they're words of comfort 00:04:20.319 --> 00:04:22.019 to troubled disciples. 00:04:22.420 --> 00:04:23.599 And they're trustworthy. 00:04:24.639 --> 00:04:26.540 Jesus asks them to trust his words 00:04:26.540 --> 00:04:29.120 just as they trust the words of God. 00:04:29.219 --> 00:04:30.599 It's a claim to deity, 00:04:30.759 00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:51.260 that you also may be where I am. 00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:54.420 Where is Jesus going? 00:05:55.540 --> 00:05:57.540 Well, after Jesus dies on the cross, 00:05:57.600 --> 00:05:59.460 he's going to his Father's house. 00:06:00.540 --> 00:06:02.379 That is something to rejoice. 00:06:02.900 --> 00:06:04.920 It's the Son returning to the Father. 00:06:05.879 --> 00:06:07.520 But what is this house? 00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:09.680 The Father's house, 00:06:09.779 --> 00:06:12.759 it's a reference to the Old Testament temple. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:15.839 It's the place where God dwells. 00:06:16.719 --> 00:06:20.159 The house is an image of the presence of God. 00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:24.359 And so Jesus is returning to the presence of his Father. 00:06:25.539 --> 00:06:27.759 How many rooms are in this house? 00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:29.959 Have we got one for the Father, 00:06:30.139 --> 00:06:30.879 one for the Son, 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:32.199 one for the Holy Spirit? 00:06:32.799 --> 00:06:33.799 Not at all. 00:06:34.199 --> 00:06:36.519 It's got many rooms. 00:06:36.519 --> 00:06:37.759 Jesus says, 00:06:37.979 --> 00:06:39.819 my Father's house has many rooms. 00:06:40.299 --> 00:06:41.779 There's no limit given, 00:06:42.219 --> 00:06:45.359 no scope to the size of the Father's house. 00:06:45.819 --> 00:06:49.199 This is a house for an ever-growing family. 00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:52.959 And so yes, Jesus is going away. 00:06:53.099 --> 00:06:54.659 He's going to be with his Father. 00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:56.259 But he goes with a purpose. 00:06:57.779 --> 00:07:01.399 Jesus goes to prepare a place for his disciples. 00:07:01.859 --> 00:07:03.319 He's preparing rooms, 00:07:03.319 --> 00:07:06.599 and he's going to come back and get his disciples 00:07:06.599 --> 00:07:10.639 so they too can live in the presence of God. 00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:13.519 Now this is an immense promise. 00:07:14.219 --> 00:07:16.980 It's a promise that any first century Jew 00:07:16.980 --> 00:07:19.879 would jump over joy hearing. 00:07:20.740 --> 00:07:23.379 This picture of the house of God 00:07:23.379 --> 00:07:26.120 uses the language of the Old Testament 00:07:26.120 --> 00:07:29.199 to describe an eternal home. 00:07:30.379 --> 00:07:34.259 Listen to this prayer from King David in Psalm 27. 00:07:35.259 --> 00:07:35.920 He says, 00:07:36.579 --> 00:07:39.579 One thing I ask from the Lord, 00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:41.720 this only do I seek, 00:07:42.379 --> 00:07:44.860 that I may dwell in the house of the Lord 00:07:44.860 --> 00:07:46.780 all the days of my life, 00:07:47.280 --> 00:07:49.319 to gaze on the beauty of the Lord 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:51.160 and to seek him in his temple. 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:55.500 The writer earnestly asks 00:07:55.500 --> 00:07:58.439 that one day he would dwell in the house of the Lord. 00:07:59.020 --> 00:08:00.800 He longs for the day 00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:02.680 that he would live there forevermore 00:08:02.680 --> 00:08:07.680 so that he might gaze on the beauty of the Lord, 00:08:08.379 --> 00:08:09.620 seek him in his temple. 00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:12.879 So Jesus' use of the phrase, 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:14.160 the Father's house, 00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:16.700 it sparks a lot of these thoughts and emotions 00:08:16.700 --> 00:08:17.879 from the Old Testament. 00:08:18.379 --> 00:08:21.020 This is heaven that Jesus is talking about. 00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:23.060 He's inviting his disciples 00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:27.340 to live in the Father's house forever 00:08:27.340 --> 00:08:29.920 in the wonderful, glorious, 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:33.779 overwhelmingly loving presence of the Father. 00:08:35.580 --> 00:08:39.080 But the disciples don't jump with joy, 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:40.440 not as you would expect. 00:08:41.060 --> 00:08:44.500 Notice they respond with shock and confusion. 00:08:45.300 --> 00:08:48.139 In verse 4, Jesus says to his disciples, 00:08:48.139 --> 00:08:52.399 you know the way to the place where I'm going. 00:08:53.559 --> 00:08:54.860 Thomas said to him, 00:08:55.480 --> 00:08:57.960 Lord, we don't know where you're going, 00:08:58.100 --> 00:08:59.460 so how can we know the way? 00:09:01.080 --> 00:09:02.559 Thomas doesn't get it. 00:09:02.939 --> 00:09:04.360 He's really confused, 00:09:04.539 --> 00:09:06.039 and that's quite understandable really. 00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:09.399 He doesn't grasp that Jesus is talking about heaven. 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:11.039 He's wondering, 00:09:11.399 --> 00:09:12.960 where is this house, Jesus? 00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:14.540 I'd really like to follow, 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:16.220 but I don't know how. 00:09:17.080 --> 00:09:20.019 Perhaps you could share an address or a map, 00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:21.320 perhaps a compass, 00:09:21.580 --> 00:09:23.620 because we don't know how to get there. 00:09:25.259 --> 00:09:27.259 And so Jesus tells them the way 00:09:27.259 --> 00:09:29.639 in verse 6. 00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:31.560 Jesus answered, 00:09:31.559 --> 00:09:43.819 And this is the way to the Father. 00:09:44.259 --> 00:09:47.779 Jesus claims that he is the way to the Father's house. 00:09:48.539 --> 00:09:50.859 The disciples don't yet understand this, 00:09:50.979 --> 00:09:52.699 but they would soon see. 00:09:53.939 --> 00:09:56.839 Theologian Don Carson puts it like this. 00:09:56.840 --> 00:10:24.379 Jesus would go the way of death. 00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:26.160 Why? 00:10:26.840 --> 00:10:31.379 Because currently no human can enter the presence of God. 00:10:31.899 --> 00:10:34.120 No one can reach the house of God, 00:10:34.180 --> 00:10:36.040 and no one is worthy of heaven. 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:39.120 Our sin and our brokenness 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:42.980 will not allow us to live in the presence of God. 00:10:44.259 --> 00:10:47.500 But God always planned to make a way. 00:10:48.280 --> 00:10:52.700 The Father wants to offer us eternal life in his house. 00:10:53.280 --> 00:10:55.740 And that's why Jesus has to go. 00:10:55.740 --> 00:10:58.560
