one thing to another. 00:06:26.939 --> 00:06:32.360 We're just saying, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty. 00:06:33.699 --> 00:06:41.980 And repentance is when a sinner like you and me, born under Adam's curse with remaining sins in our own flesh, is brought into the presence of a holy God. 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:46.639 And our sin is exposed so that we hate it. 00:06:47.339 --> same observation. 00:07:34.579 --> 00:07:39.139 How welcome is a surgeon to a man who is bleeding from his wounds. 00:07:39.139 --> 00:07:44.019 So first the Lord exposes it, then he comes and heals. 00:07:46.219 --> 00:07:50.620 You're likely here because you or someone you love has experienced this. 00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:59.459 What we have in our passage for today, 1 Samuel 12, is such repentance that you know you've experienced. 00:07:59.620 --> 00:08:02.719 The Lord willing, you will soon because the Lord has brought you here. 00:08:03.419 --> 00:08:06.899 What's special about this chapter is it happens on a national scale. 00:08:06.899 --> 00:08:09.599 It's a corporate repentance. 00:08:10.799 --> 00:08:14.359 And my goal today is simply to walk through this passage, reading it together, 00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:19.439 and make four observations about the blessing of repentance. 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:22.419 A blessing is a gift from God. 00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:23.299 It's a good thing. 00:08:23.719 --> 00:08:28.359 It's a spiritual treasure from heaven given to us right now in this life to enjoy. 00:08:28.719 --> 00:08:30.120 And that's what repentance is. 00:08:30.859 --> 00:08:33.579 So the first observation from our passage is this. 00:08:34.059 --> 00:08:36.579 The Lord raises up servants. 00:08:36.899 --> 00:08:40.039 Whom he has taught the blessing of repentance. 00:08:41.259 --> 00:08:43.899 The Lord raises up a servant like Samuel. 00:08:44.439 --> 00:08:45.659 Why is Samuel qualified? 00:08:46.120 --> 00:08:50.620 Because Samuel has experienced the blessing of repentance himself. 00:08:50.620 --> 00:08:57.200 The Lord causes repentance as his people hear his word. 00:08:57.259 --> 00:09:00.460 But who's going to stand up and deliver the word to God's people? 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:06.580 We've seen how Samuel has been criticized as a minister of God's word. 00:09:06.679 --> 00:09:10.179 That's the last interaction between the nation of Israel and Samuel. 00:09:10.179 --> 00:09:14.179 But now verse 12, Samuel stands up. 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:18.419 Now remember, there in Gilgal, they had this great deliverance from Nahash, that serpent. 00:09:19.319 --> 00:09:23.059 The Lord's spirit rushed upon Saul, the most unlikely of men. 00:09:23.059 --> 00:09:29.000 And now the beginning of chapter 12, Samuel says to all Israel, would you look at verse 1 with me? 00:09:29.739 --> 00:09:36.599 Indeed, I have heeded or listened to your voice and all that you said to me, and I've made a king over you. 00:09:36.819 --> 00:09:37.339 Verse 2. 00:09:37.739 --> 00:09:42.239 And now there is the king, Saul, right here, walking before you. 00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:45.899 Remember how the people rejected Samuel. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:50.279 And they were begging for a king to be like all the other nations. 00:09:50.779 --> 00:09:53.299 Their charges against Samuel were two things. 00:09:55.100 --> 00:09:56.220 Samuel, you're old. 00:09:57.680 --> 00:09:59.180 And your sons are corrupt. 00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:00.820 Remember those two charges? 00:10:02.659 --> 00:10:05.340 One of those charges is accurate. 00:10:05.820 --> 00:10:06.820 His sons were corrupt. 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.060 And he was allowing that to happen. 00:10:09.059 --> 00:10:12.819 The other charge of being old is not a 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:44.740 Samuel is a humble minister, establishing credibility to deliver this message he needs to give, 00:11:44.800 --> 00:11:45.900 that the people need to hear. 00:11:46.280 --> 00:11:52.639 And he's beating them to any objections that would disqualify him from doing the thing God has charged him with doing. 00:11:53.520 --> 00:11:55.720 What's the courtroom that he's Lord who causes us, you and me, the people of Israel, Lydia in the book of Acts, to hear his word. 00:17:17.940 --> 00:17:24.980 And it's applied powerfully in the hearing of his word as it's ministered to you by such ministers. 00:17:26.700 --> 00:17:30.440 Well, what's the theme of Samuel's sermon to the people of God? 00:17:30.440 --> 00:17:34.380 Let's look at verse 6 together. 00:17:34.580 --> 00:17:39.880 Then Samuel said to the people, it is the Lord who raised up. 00:17:40.580 --> 00:17:41.380 Fill in the blank. 00:17:41.880 --> 00:17:48.180 He starts all the way back with Moses and Aaron who brought your forefathers out of slavery in Egypt. 00:17:48.420 --> 00:17:50.660 Now remember, Samuel took them all the way to Gilgal. 00:17:51.279 --> 00:17:56.080 And that's the first encampment of the people after they crossed the Jordan, the next generation with Joshua. 00:17:56.079 --> 00:18:03.139 And what is it that's right there in Gilgal, an illustration for this sermon he's preaching to them that it was the Lord who raises up. 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:09.339 It's those 12 stones from inside the Jordan River that they carried out with them and sat there. 00:18:09.639 --> 00:18:12.980 And this is where Samuel now wants the people to stand and see. 00:18:14.199 --> 00:18:16.720 Now here's the pattern he sets up in verse 7. 00:18:16.720 --> 00:18:28.360 Now therefore stand still that I may reason with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous acts of the Lord which he did to you and your fathers. 00:18:29.220 --> 00:18:37.620 His argument is that the raising up of a servant deliverer, it always happens after the people cry out to God. 00:18:37.920 --> 00:18:39.319 Then he sets the pattern this way. 00:18:39.319 --> 00:18:47.939 In verse tells them in verse 9 that God sold them into the hands of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. 00:19:25.180 --> 00:19:26.240 And they fought against them. 00:19:26.839 --> 00:19:28.420 Well, what happens next in this pattern? 00:19:28.980 --> 00:19:31.099 Number 3, the people cry out to the Lord again. --> 00:19:42.319 And we have served the Baals and the Asterisks. 00:19:42.759 --> 00:19:48.579 Those are images of the pagan nations that we are worshiping now into the place of the true God, the
