will put enmity between you and the woman, 00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:36.620 between your offspring and her offspring. 00:03:36.980 --> 00:03:40.320 He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. 00:03:41.980 --> 00:03:44.920 This is God's promise to Satan and to us 00:03:44.920 --> 00:03:50.060 that this world won't be completely consumed by sin. 00:03:51.340 --> 00:03:54.460 Radiation won't completely wipe out this world. 00:03:54.460 --> 00:03:58.980 Humanity is not going to be completely abandoned by God. 00:03:59.500 --> 00:04:02.180 Yes, as we leave this garden and as we head 00:05:13.359 --> 00:05:14.620 And Paul says this in Ephesians. 00:05:14.679 --> 00:05:16.199 Do you remember when we were in Ephesians? 00:05:16.299 --> 00:05:20.719 Before conversion, we are following the world, the flesh, and the devil. 00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:24.000 And here in Genesis 3.15, 00:05:24.360 --> 00:05:26.500 God promises that there will be a family, 00:05:26.980 --> 00:05:28.720 a group of people in this world, 00:05:29.020 --> 00:05:32.260 who in their unbelief will belong to Satan. 00:05:34.080 --> 00:05:36.460 Which shouldn't be a surprise after the fall. 00:05:37.640 --> 00:05:38.860 But what is a surprise, 00:05:39.640 --> 00:05:42.760 is that God promises another family. 00:05:42.759 --> 00:05:45.680 The offspring of the woman. 00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:48.959 And that family, that group of people, 00:05:49.079 --> 00:05:51.159 will have enmity, opposition, 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:53.219 against Satan's family. 00:05:54.480 --> 00:05:58.339 This is a promise that there will be believers in this world. 00:05:59.019 --> 00:06:01.420 People who are friends with God. 00:06:01.420 --> 00:06:06.420 And that family is going to be at war with Satan's family. 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:09.620 Two families at war in this world. 00:06:09.939 --> 00:06:14.439 That this is the promise that God will build his church. 00:06:14.439 --> 00:06:17.920 And on top offspring. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:30.139 One child, one man, a son. 00:06:30.860 --> 00:06:34.040 And he will come to bruise Satan's head. 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:35.279 To crush him. 00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:39.240 A son to end evil in this world. 00:06:39.500 --> 00:06:41.699 He shall bruise your head, Satan. 00:06:41.699 --> 00:06:45.779 This is God's promise to have a people. 00:06:46.779 --> 00:06:49.399 And from that people, there will be a son. 00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:52.560 And that son will save the world. 00:06:54.279 --> 00:06:57.500 And so we leave Genesis 3 on a cliffhanger. 00:07:10.000 We head into the east of Eden, 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.240 and asking, what have we done? 00:07:13.339 --> 00:07:15.560 But we also go out asking, 00:07:15.879 --> 00:07:18.439 but what is God about to do? 00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:22.480 And so the story we're in now in Genesis, 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:25.720 it's the story of sin and a son. 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:29.779 We are to enter these chapters and head east 00:07:29.779 --> 00:07:31.939 with our magnifying glass out, 00:07:32.259 --> 00:07:33.519 looking for two things, 00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:35.639 sin and a son. 00:08:07.040 And the first thing we come across 00:08:07.040 --> 00:08:10.879 is that God is doing just as he promised. 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:14.860 God is creating two families. 00:08:16.519 --> 00:08:17.720 That's my first point today. 00:08:17.780 --> 00:08:19.160 God is creating two families. 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:23.639 So we're expecting sin and a son. 00:08:25.060 --> 00:08:26.840 And how does Genesis 4 begin? 00:08:27.019 --> 00:08:27.980 It's a promising start. 00:08:28.860 --> 00:08:30.280 There's a son, verse 1. 00:08:30.279 --> 00:08:32.939 Now Adam knew Eve, his wife, 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:35.259 and she conceived and bore Cain. 00:08:36.939 --> 00:08:39.699 And Eve knows that this is no ordinary birth. 00:08:40.459 --> 00:08:41.120 She says, 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:43.559 I've produced a man with the help of the Lord. 00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:47.059 She has this promise in her mind 00:08:47.059 --> 00:08:49.919 that this is a woman clinging to God's promise. 00:08:50.679 --> 00:08:52.600 And as she holds her son, 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.740 she knows God is keeping his promise. 00:08:55.740 --> 00:08:59.320 But there's also another son, verse 2, 00:08:59.740 --> 00:09:00.060 Abel. 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:02.480 Two sons, Cain and Abel. 00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:05.700 So if we have our magnifying glasses, 00:09:06.500 --> 00:09:07.539 and we're looking for a son, 00:09:07.759 --> 00:09:09.759 then this is a promising start east of Eden. 00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:13.360 Maybe, maybe the serpent crusher is here. 00:09:14.940 --> 00:09:16.180 But we see 00:09:16.180 --> 00:09:18.799 these brothers aren't alike. 00:09:20.060 --> 00:09:22.259 There's a deep difference between them. 00:09:22.259 --> 00:09:23.439 And that difference, 00:09:23.740 --> 00:09:25.620 it shows up in worship. 00:09:27.120 --> 00:09:27.779 So Cain, 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:29.740 he's a fruit and vegetable farmer. 00:09:30.539 --> 00:09:31.179 And Abel, 00:09:31.639 00:09:40.120 humanity is worshipping God. 00:09:41.240 --> 00:09:44.379 These two sons bring offering sacrifices to the Lord. 00:09:45.100 --> 00:09:46.220 Cain brings his fruits, 00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:48.980 and Abel brings the best of his sheep. 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:53.840 But the Lord isn't happy with one of them, 00:09:54.019 --> 00:09:54.460 verse 4. 00:09:55.800 --> 00:09:58.480 And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering. 00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:00.800 But for Cain and his offering, 00:10:00.940 --> 00:10:02.100 he had no regard. 00:10:03.620 --> 00:10:05.580 The Lord delights in Abel, 00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:07.899 but Cain he isn't happy with. 00:10:09.399 --> 00:10:11.740 Now, we aren't told why here explicitly, 00:10:11.960 --> 00:10:12.980 but the New Testament, 00:10:13.100 --> 00:10:14.080 it gives us an insight. 00:10:15.159 --> 00:10:16.759 The book of Hebrews says this, 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:17.960 about Cain and Abel. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:19.340 It says, 00:10:19.460 --> 00:10:20.280 by faith, 00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:22.519 Abel offered to God 00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:25.280 a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain. 00:10:27.220 --> 00:10:29.700 The difference is not that one brother 00:10:29.700 --> 00:10:30.980 is more impressive than the other. 00:10:31.740 --> 00:10:34.720 Abel isn't more likable than Cain in God's eyes. 00:10:34.840 --> 00:10:37.139 Abel hasn't earned God's favour in some way. 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:37.420 No. 00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:39.100 The difference, 00:10:39.740 --> 00:10:40.360 the key, you notice, 00:10:55.040 --> 00:10:55.440 Abel, 00:10:55.940 --> 00:10:57.960 he offers his firstborn sheep, 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:00.560 the most precious of his animals, 00:11:00.940 --> 00:11:01.940 the best of his meat, 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:03.060 the fattest bits. 00:11:04.259 --> 00:11:05.660 But look what it says Cain brings. 00:11:06.160 --> 00:11:06.980 It just says, 00:11:07.820 --> 00:11:09.920 an offering of the fruit of the ground. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:13.399 It's not the best he has. 00:11:14.579 --> 00:11:17.000 There's no mention of anything special here. 00:12:30.939 Abel knew that. 00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:33.860 And there are those who think, 00:12:34.819 --> 00:12:36.279 how they live before God, 00:12:36.360 --> 00:12:37.679 how they approach him, 00:12:38.579 --> 00:12:39.959 what they give to him, 00:12:40.860 --> 00:12:42.240 they think it doesn't matter. 00:12:43.980 --> 00:12:45.860 That God should be happy, 00:12:46.279 --> 00:12:47.659 with whatever we do, 00:12:47.719 --> 00:12:48.779 and however we live. 00:12:49.779 --> 00:12:52.819 Even if we just give him the scraps of our life, 00:12:53.379 --> 00:12:54.179 that's Cain. 00:12:54.179 --> 00:12:58.259 And that's the unbelief of this world. 00:12:59.859 --> 00:13:02.279 People are existing before God, 00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:02.959 and thinking, 00:13:03.479 --> 00:13:05.199 God should be happy with them, 00:13:05.419 --> 00:13:06.479 just the way they are. 00:13:07.479 --> 00:13:09.439 They don't think about him, 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:10.339 or love him, 00:13:10.599 --> 00:13:12.239 or give him the time of day, 00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:14.459 but they give him scraps. 00:13:14.460 --> 00:13:17.800 And God isn't happy. 00:13:19.259 --> 00:13:22.060 Because God doesn't want your scraps. 00:13:23.580 --> 00:13:25.460 He wants your heart. 00:13:25.460 --> 00:13:29.259 He wants you to have faith in him. 00:13:30.160 --> 00:13:32.540 God delights He hates it. 00:13:53.639 --> 00:13:56.580 He hates that God isn't happy with him. 00:13:56.919 --> 00:13:59.439 He hates that he can't approach God how he wants. 00:13:59.659 --> 00:14:02.360 He hates that God deserves so much. 00:14:02.699 --> 00:14:04.340 He hates that Abel's right with God, 00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:05.080 but he isn't. 00:14:05.980 --> 00:14:07.220 And he's fuming.
