these verses, Jesus, all the way from verse 19 to 47, it's all Jesus' words. 00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:16.620 And so this section is just loaded with rich statements from Jesus, 00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:23.740 which reveal all kinds of wonderful truths, which we're looking forward to seeing. 00:01:23.739 --> 00:01:33.099 Jesus is going to tell us a little bit more about this mysterious and wonderful relationship that he has with his Father. 00:01:33.859 --> 00:01:41.060 He's going to talk to us about the extent of his authority and power and where it comes from. 00:01:41.459 --> 00:03:44.780 --> 00:03:47.080 Jesus gave them this answer. 00:03:48.199 --> 00:03:51.319 Now, this comes in the context of a larger story. 00:03:51.420 --> 00:03:53.740 We should probably just remember where we're at. 00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:55.300 Jesus is in Jerusalem. 00:03:55.300 --> 00:03:55.380 Jerusalem. 00:03:56.100 --> 00:04:04.240 And he has just recently healed a man who couldn't walk for 38 years at the pool of Bethesda. 00:04:04.480 --> 00:04:07.020 And he did that on the Sabbath day. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:09.660 He told him to pick up his mat and carry it. 00:04:09.980 --> 00:04:12.060 The man was healed and he was carrying it. 00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:22.399 And when the religious leaders heard that Jesus was the one who had done this and told him to carry his mat on the Sabbath, they began to go after Jesus. 00:04:23.079 --> 00:04:25.600 And John tells us to persecute him. 00:04:27.340 --> 00:04:29.660 There's a larger story going on here. 00:04:29.720 --> 00:04:32.600 The religious leaders were already going after Jesus. 00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:34.899 They wanted him dead. 00:04:34.899 --> 00:04:47.159 And John tells us that this charge of breaking the Sabbath was the way that they were trying to get at him and to secure that outcome. 00:04:47.739 --> 00:04:56.739 So we saw last Sunday how they went after him back in verse 16, 17, 18 and charged him with breaking the Sabbath. 00:04:57.419 --> 00:04:59.579 What are you doing working on the Sabbath? 00:05:00.459 --> 00:05:03.159 And Jesus gave this wonderful defense. 00:05:03.160 --> 00:05:06.060 My father is always at his work to this very day. 00:05:06.600 --> 00:05:08.760 And I too am working. 00:05:09.439 --> 00:05:11.320 So he didn't deny that he was working. 00:05:11.480 --> 00:05:14.760 He admitted to working on the Sabbath. 00:05:15.560 --> 00:05:23.500 And kind of got himself off the hook in a sense by saying, well, God isn't guilty for working on the Sabbath. 00:05:24.060 --> 00:05:27.220 My father and neither am I. 00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:32.400 And this response really got to the religious leaders. 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:39.179 John told us back there in verse 18 that because he said this, they tried all the more to kill him. 00:05:39.899 --> 00:05:48.759 Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, at least in their view, but he was even calling God his own father, making himself equal with God. 00:05:48.759 --> 00:05:54.759 So this is the thoughts that are going on in their hearts and minds. 00:05:54.759 --> 00:06:04.399 Like, who does this guy think he is doing these things, working on the Sabbath and then claiming God as his own father? 00:06:05.139 --> 00:06:09.740 And that's why he can do these things on the Sabbath. 00:06:09.740 --> 00:06:16.160 And we had a bit of a look at what Jesus really was, I think, saying here. 00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:24.080 God isn't guilty for working on the Sabbath because that law doesn't apply to him or his work. 00:06:25.080 --> 00:06:27.180 And Jesus says, neither am I. 00:06:27.320 --> 00:06:33.560 And the reason that we pulled out there, drew out, was because the work that Jesus does is God's work. 00:06:34.120 --> 00:06:36.440 It is the Father's work. 00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:42.379 And so the law of the Sabbath doesn't apply. 00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:50.240 And this comes through even more clearly in another passage in John, John 14, verse 10. 00:06:50.360 --> 00:06:51.180 Jesus says this, 00:06:51.180 --> 00:07:09.699 So he's not guilty for breaking the Sabbath. 00:07:09.879 --> 00:07:10.040 Why? 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:14.379 Because it's the Father living in him who is working. 00:07:14.519 --> 00:07:16.939 This is God at work here. 00:07:17.840 --> 00:07:20.060 And so the Sabbath laws don't apply. 00:07:20.060 --> 00:07:22.500 Well, the religious leaders are upset by this. 00:07:23.019 --> 00:07:32.019 They hear in this a claim from Jesus to be divine, to be on the same level as God, to be equal with God. 00:07:34.300 --> 00:07:36.379 How does Jesus respond to this? 00:07:36.459 --> 00:07:39.279 That's what we read about in verse 19. 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:42.560 Jesus gave them this answer. 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:50.519 Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself. 00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:54.819 He can do only what he sees his Father doing. 00:07:55.660 --> 00:08:00.560 Because whatever the Father does, the Son also does. 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:06.680 Now we want to slow it down and just look at these words. 00:08:06.680 --> 00:08:12.199 We really want to understand this relationship between Jesus and his Father. 00:08:12.920 --> 00:08:21.300 I mean, this is something that we've already seen glimpses of already up to this point through the gospel. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:23.060 Let's remember a few of those. 00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:27.120 Back in chapter 1, verse 14, John wrote this. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:31.500 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. 00:08:32.399 --> 00:08:33.940 We have seen his glory. 00:08:34.779 --> 00:08:43.659 Glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 00:08:43.659 --> 00:08:53.860 So, Jesus, the divine Word, the Word who was with God and was God at the beginning before anything was made, 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:55.659 he became flesh. 00:08:56.419 --> 00:08:59.620 He took on human flesh and lived among us. 00:09:00.539 --> 00:09:07.100 He is the one and only Son, John says in verse 14, who came from the Father. 00:09:07.100 --> 00:09:13.519 There are other ways that Jesus coming from the Father is described. 00:09:13.680 --> 00:09:16.360 Probably the most familiar is John 3, 16. 00:09:17.300 --> 00:09:22.920 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. 00:09:23.379 --> 00:09:31.500 So, his coming from the Father into our world is described as being given by God to the world. 00:09:31.980 --> 00:09:33.960 In the next verse, verse 17. 00:09:33.960 --> 00:09:40.480 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 00:09:41.180 --> 00:09:50.060 Not only has he come from the Father and has he been given by the Father, but he has been sent by the Father into the world. 00:09:51.540 --> 00:09:55.840 We see the intentionality of God in this. 00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:06.360 These all describe how Jesus, this man that we see walking among us, got here, where he is from. 00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:09.280 But why has he come? 00:10:10.620 --> 00:10:15.740 Well, we've seen a number of answers to that question so far in John's Gospel as well. 00:10:15.740 --> 00:10:17.460 In John 3, 16. 00:10:18.360 --> 00:10:28.220 He gave his one and only Son in order that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:40.799 So, God gave his Son to the world so that people of the world might believe in him and be spared what they deserve. 00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:48.419 That is, to perish because of their sins against God and instead receive this good gift of eternal life. 00:10:49.259 --> 00:10:53.219 We see this spelled out for us again in verse 17 of chapter 3. 00:10:53.319 --> 00:11:00.879 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:10.080 So, he has given and sent his Son into the world in order to save people of the world. 00:11:11.519 --> 00:11:17.279 Jesus has come from the Father on a rescue mission. 00:11:17.720 --> 00:11:18.659 He has come to rescue. 00:11:19.879 --> 00:11:28.220 And not only has he come to rescue, but he has come to reveal to people who God is. 00:11:28.220 --> 00:11:33.540 And we saw this back in John chapter 1, verse 18. 00:11:34.580 --> 00:11:35.639 John wrote this, 00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:47.700 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God, and is in closest relationship with the Father. 00:11:48.259 --> 00:11:52.500 He has made him, that is the Father, known. 00:11:52.500 --> 00:12:03.860 So, the one and only Son has made the Father, God, whom no one has ever seen, known. 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:13.139 So, Jesus, not only has he come to rescue, but he has come to reveal just who God is. 00:12:13.279 --> 00:12:20.740 And we hear in these words that the Son is in closest relationship with the Father, says John. 00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:24.180 There's this closeness, this deep intimacy. 00:12:25.259 --> 00:12:29.960 There's this relationship between Father and Son. 00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:37.100 And we see glimpses of this relationship throughout the Gospel. 00:12:37.259 --> 00:12:38.360 We've seen a few already. 00:12:38.680 --> 00:12:42.299 We saw it when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the temple courts. 00:12:42.779 --> 00:12:49.180 As he was flipping the tables and driving out the sellers and the money changers. 00:12:49.179 --> 00:12:55.519 He said, Stop turning my Father's house into a market. 00:12:55.879 --> 00:13:01.099 We saw this passion, this love, this fierce loyalty to his Father. 00:13:01.679 --> 00:13:04.439 And to his Father's glory and honor. 00:13:05.099 --> 00:13:12.739 We saw it again in, kind of from the other side of the relationship in John chapter 3, verse 35. 00:13:12.740 --> 00:13:20.919 John writes there, The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. 00:13:22.120 --> 00:13:29.360 And now, as we come to verse 19, we're going to see a lot more in these verses which follow. 00:13:29.419 --> 00:13:34.860 A lot more about this relationship between the Father and the Son. 00:13:34.860 --> 00:13:43.940 So Jesus gave them this answer, Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:48.340 He can do only what he sees his Father doing. 00:13:49.080 --> 00:13:53.680 Because what the Father does, the Son also does. 00:13:55.220 --> 00:13:57.340 Now I want to be careful with these words. 00:13:57.500 --> 00:14:00.120 Let's listen to them again in another translation. 00:14:00.360 --> 00:14:01.960 One that's a little more word for word. 00:14:01.960 --> 00:14:04.440 00:14:31.079 Now what does that mean? 00:14:31.879 --> 00:14:35.879 What does Jesus mean as he says this? 00:14:37.219 --> 00:14:39.219 All kinds of questions arise. 00:14:40.259 --> 00:14:46.359 What does Jesus mean when he says that the Son can do nothing of himself? 00:14:47.939 --> 00:14:50.799 Unless it's something he sees the Father doing. 00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:55.919 What does Jesus mean when he says, sees the Father doing? 00:14:56.139 --> 00:15:00.319 In what sense does he see the Father doing the things that he's doing? 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:09.559 What does it mean that the Son likewise also does the things that the Father does? 00:15:09.559 --> 00:15:13.979 We have all kinds of questions as we come to these words. 00:15:14.039 --> 00:15:19.539 And I think the first place to go with these questions is to our knees. 00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:22.319 And just humbly acknowledge. 00:15:23.119 --> 00:15:31.719 We're talking about the mysterious relationship between the Divine Son whole other plane of understanding, realm of existence that is so foreign to us as creatures, as human beings. 00:15:52.659 --> 00:16:01.079 And so we want to start with humility and realize that this is not something that is easy to understand. 00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:08.100 I can guarantee you that the disciples are probably scratching their heads at this moment and wondering, 00:16:08.319 --> 00:16:10.819 what does that mean, Jesus? 00:16:13.059 --> 00:16:17.240 Probably having the same questions as we do. 00:16:17.240 --> 00:16:23.240 And we know this because a little later in the story of John, 00:16:23.379 --> 00:16:29.200 one of the disciples will have a conversation with Jesus and kind of give away that he still doesn't get it, 00:16:29.480 --> 00:16:32.060 this relationship between Jesus and his Father. 00:16:32.259 --> 00:16:39.440 And Jesus will kind of explain it again and try to help him see it. 00:16:39.440 --> 00:16:43.700 And so we're not the only ones who come to these words and are wondering, 00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:47.280 what does Jesus mean by this? 00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:50.460 So we want to be careful with these words. 00:16:51.060 --> 00:16:54.120 But what can we say from these words? 00:16:54.260 --> 00:17:01.680 Well, I think at the very least we can say that Jesus seems to be saying that he, 00:17:01.960 --> 00:17:07.840 as the Divine Son of God, does not act independently from the Father. 00:17:07.839 --> 00:17:17.599 Jesus, as the Divine Son of God, does not act independently from the Father. 00:17:18.159 --> 00:17:19.539 Now, where do we get this from? 00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:25.619 Well, let's bring into focus the larger context of the conversation with the religious leaders. 00:17:25.779 --> 00:17:27.159 They're upset with him. 00:17:27.619 --> 00:17:28.079 Why? 00:17:28.579 --> 00:17:31.139 Because he has claimed that God is his own Father, 00:17:31.279 --> 00:17:35.259 and that just as his Father is not guilty for breaking the Sabbath, 00:17:35.259 --> 00:17:38.259 so he, because he is the Son of the Father, 00:17:38.359 --> 00:17:42.180 is not guilty for working on the Sabbath day. 00:17:43.379 --> 00:17:45.220 So they understand him correctly. 00:17:45.339 --> 00:17:47.099 He is claiming to be divine. 00:17:47.319 --> 00:17:51.119 And if he wasn't, Jesus could very easily just say, 00:17:51.240 --> 00:17:51.940 very truly, 00:17:52.299 --> 00:17:53.500 I say to you, 00:17:53.900 --> 00:17:57.140 I am not claiming to be equal with God. 00:17:57.140 --> 00:18:02.680 I am not claiming to be the Divine Son of God, 00:18:02.740 --> 00:18:04.160 but he doesn't say that. 00:18:05.100 --> 00:18:09.580 You can imagine what the Jewish leaders are thinking in this moment. 00:18:11.040 --> 00:18:15.740 They're thinking of perhaps some of those words from the Scriptures. 00:18:17.040 --> 00:18:19.480 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, 00:18:19.920 --> 00:18:22.060 the Lord is one. 00:18:22.620 --> 00:18:23.820 There is only one God, 00:18:23.819 --> 00:18:25.579 and so who are you, a man, 00:18:25.879 --> 00:18:27.000 standing in front of us, 00:18:27.139 --> 00:18:30.119 claiming to be divine with your words? 00:18:32.439 --> 00:18:33.720 There's only one God. 00:18:34.679 --> 00:18:37.319 I think there's a bit of an answer to that 00:18:37.319 --> 00:18:39.779 in what Jesus says here in 00:20:12.139 --> 00:20:13.460 it seems as though he's saying. 00:20:14.139 --> 00:20:17.720 And unless he sees his Father doing it, 00:20:18.379 --> 00:20:21.039 he can't just go off 00:20:21.039 -->
