But the reason for that story is that in the passage today, 00:02:56.959 --> 00:03:02.519 we have the biggest kind of moment of clarity in all of history on display to us. 00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:04.560 The greatest truth being revealed of all time. 00:03:06.300 --> 00:03:07.740 And we need to get to the heart of that, 00:03:07.820 --> 00:03:12.439 because it has an infinite amount of implications for us as followers of Jesus. 00:03:14.620 --> 00:03:18.060 Now, like always, there are three questions that I have in my head 00:03:18.060 --> 00:03:20.900 when I read the book of Mark, which I inherited from my older brother, 00:03:21.260 --> 00:03:22.160 because he's very wise. 00:03:22.159 --> 00:03:30.419 Again, who is Jesus? 00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:31.859 What has he done? 00:03:32.259 --> 00:03:33.840 And what does that mean for us? 00:03:34.780 --> 00:03:36.099 So first, who is Jesus? 00:03:37.259 --> 00:03:40.139 Again, the importance of this question cannot be stated enough. 00:03:41.259 --> 00:03:43.840 It is central to the gospel of Mark. 00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:49.240 It's so important that Jesus asks it himself, unprompted, in the passage today, 00:03:49.400 --> 00:03:51.420 which is such a rare occurrence for Jesus to do. 00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:55.360 And I think a little context would help us understand more. 00:03:56.080 --> 00:03:59.000 00:04:05.860 --> 00:04:09.639 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:16.680 The first sentence in the book identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah. 00:04:17.300 --> 00:04:18.139 Lays it out plain. 00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:23.139 But there isn't a clear occasion of anyone identifying him as that 00:04:23.139 --> 00:04:24.899 until this point in the book. 00:04:25.620 --> 00:04:26.180 It's a mystery. 00:04:26.180 --> 00:04:32.439 So for a while now, Jesus and his disciples have been traveling around the area of ancient Palestine, 00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:39.100 teaching, preaching, healing, exercising, and possibly exercising. 00:04:39.540 --> 00:04:43.500 But this whole time, Jesus has been doing miraculous things, 00:04:44.019 --> 00:04:47.620 with our expectation being that people would see him for who he really is. 00:04:48.540 --> 00:04:49.980 But it hasn't happened. 00:04:50.460 --> 00:04:51.300 People don't see it. 00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:56.639 Earlier in this chapter, the disciples are worried about their lack of food, 00:04:56.759 --> 00:04:57.680 specifically bread, 00:04:58.300 --> 00:05:04.000 immediately after Jesus has just finished feeding a humongous group of people 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:05.819 for the second time in front of them. 00:05:06.520 --> 00:05:09.639 And you can see by his reaction in verse 21 of chapter 8 00:05:09.639 --> 00:05:14.639 that he expects them to see what's really going on, 00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:16.180 and he's frustrated that they aren't. 00:05:16.180 --> 00:05:22.180 So we come back to the question asked by Jesus himself in the chapter. 00:05:23.139 --> 00:05:24.740 Who do people say that I am? 00:05:26.259 --> 00:05:28.240 Meaning, what have the people put together 00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:31.960 after seeing my miracles, or hearing my teaching, 00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:33.899 or even just hearing about me? 00:05:34.660 --> 00:05:35.600 What have they put together? 00:05:35.740 --> 00:05:37.899 What is the fruit of my labors, Jesus is wondering? 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:41.259 And the answers the disciples give him, 00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:45.040 that the people are saying, aren't bad answers. 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:46.939 They're in an appropriate direction. 00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:50.040 But they're still wrong. 00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:51.300 We have John the Baptist, 00:05:52.220 --> 00:05:54.500 who died a few months ago before this story. 00:05:54.900 --> 00:05:58.060 We have Elijah, who died a few hundred years ago before this story. 00:05:58.439 --> 00:06:02.600 And we have generally the great prophets, 00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:04.439 who are in the back half of the Old Testament, 00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:07.900 none of whom have appeared to Israel for also another 800 years. 00:06:07.899 --> 00:06:13.939 But these are all people that are great. 00:06:14.500 --> 00:06:17.859 The heroes of Israel, the paragons of the nation, 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:20.079 the people who they think, 00:06:20.579 --> 00:06:23.779 he must be great, he must be like one of these men. 00:06:25.819 --> 00:06:27.500 The best they can think of. 00:06:28.459 --> 00:06:29.939 But like I said, these answers are incorrect. 00:06:30.179 --> 00:06:31.519 Jesus asks the question again, 00:06:31.939 --> 00:06:33.379 but to his disciples this time, 00:06:33.379 --> 00:06:34.759 specifically to them, 00:06:35.219 --> 00:06:37.240 the people who he's taught the most. 00:06:37.699 --> 00:06:39.339 He's handpicked them to follow him. 00:06:39.659 --> 00:06:41.300 They have seen more and done more 00:06:41.300 --> 00:06:44.279 than we could ever imagine from the Bible that we have. 00:06:45.399 --> 00:06:46.939 So they must have the right answer. 00:06:47.579 opportunity, 00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:56.600 actually gets it right in verse 29. 00:06:56.819 --> 00:06:57.759 It's an amazing moment. 00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:02.079 It's as simple as an answer can be to of Israel 00:08:03.639 --> 00:08:04.679 in Exodus 19 00:08:04.679 --> 00:08:06.459 or to David in 2 Samuel 7. 00:08:06.620 --> 00:08:08.039 The list keeps on going. 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:09.019 It goes on and on and on. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:12.479 And each one builds upon the idea 00:08:12.479 --> 00:08:13.879 of who this Christ is, 00:08:13.939 --> 00:08:14.879 how important he is, 00:08:14.919 --> 00:08:16.139 how powerful he is. 00:08:16.799 --> 00:08:19.239 They just add weight to the person of Jesus. 00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:20.319 When Peter says to him, 00:08:20.379 --> this term 00:08:35.460 --> 00:08:39.180 is the structure of Mark chapter 8. 00:08:39.379 --> 00:08:41.820 Jesus has just finished healing a blind man 00:08:41.820 --> 00:08:43.420 of his physical blindness. 00:08:44.279 --> 00:08:45.360 It's kind of a weird story. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:46.440 He spits in his face 00:08:46.440 --> 00:08:48.460 and the guy kind of sees trees 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:49.380 and then sees people again. 00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:50.080 It's kind of strange. 00:08:51.460 --> 00:08:52.900 But then he moves down 00:08:52.900 --> 00:08:56.080 and he heals the disciples and us 00:08:56.080 --> 00:08:57.700 of our spiritual blindness. 00:08:59.460 --> 00:09:01.140 The answers that the disciples give 00:09:01.140 --> 00:09:03.360 about the people when he asks them 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:06.420 shows that they can't see who he really is. 00:09:07.100 --> 00:09:08.400 They haven't put it together. 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:12.139 And it wouldn't be possible 00:09:54.259 through rejection, 00:09:54.820 --> 00:09:55.759 and through death. 00:09:57.720 --> 00:09:59.060 And I think this idea 00:09:59.060 --> 00:10:02.200 has lost a bit of its impact on us. Jesus has the power 00:10:24.700 --> 00:10:25.899 to exercise demons, 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:28.440 to heal the sick in masses, 00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:30.480 and to raise a little girl 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:31.580 back from the dead. 00:10:31.580 --> 00:10:33.720 So how can a man 00:10:33.720 --> 00:10:35.360 who has the power over death 00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:36.740 actually die? 00:10:37.139 00:11:13.559 you know, 00:11:13.779 --> 00:11:15.379 majestic and strong people. 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:17.240 They succeed in their acts 00:11:17.240 --> 00:11:17.860 of heroism 00:11:17.860 --> 00:11:19.379 by not needing to die 00:11:19.379 --> 00:11:21.559 because dying equals failure. 00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:22.059 Right? 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:23.960 As a teenager, 00:11:24.139 -->
