And it's with that in mind, we're going to be thinking about the time where God brought about the first Christmas. 00:01:59.859 --> 00:02:09.479 Christmas. Some big words in there, some unfamiliar words. What is it all about? 00:02:39.299 --> 00:02:41.859 Here's the first thing I want us to understand. 00:05:43.539 --> 00:05:45.420 What is Paul getting at in this moment? 00:05:45.539 --> 00:05:51.259 Well, it links with the wider purpose, really, of why he's writing this letter to the church in Galatia at the time. 00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:55.959 Let's flashback just for a few moments why we're at the point we are within this letter. 00:05:56.680 --> 00:06:01.000 Paul, on one of his journeys where he was taking the gospel to various towns and cities, 00:06:01.500 --> 00:06:03.319 he goes to this place called Galatia. 00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:05.459 He tells them the good news about Jesus. 00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:05.800 Yeah. 00:06:05.800 --> 00:06:11.079 There Jesus is coming to the earth, his death, his resurrection, all that it means to follow him. 00:06:11.220 --> 00:06:14.280 And amazingly, people receive that news positively. 00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:15.819 They give their lives to Jesus. 00:06:15.939 --> 00:06:16.600 They follow him. 00:06:16.660 --> 00:06:20.020 That's what it means to be a Christian if you're exploring the Christian faith. 00:06:20.420 --> 00:06:23.540 But as Paul moves on and he goes on to other towns and cities, 00:06:23.660 --> 00:06:28.920 what happens at that point is some of the other religious folk within Galatia and their surrounding areas come on in. 00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:33.520 And they start teaching extra teaching. 00:06:33.680 --> 00:06:38.439 You might call it additional teaching, which is essentially them turning around and saying that, 00:06:38.540 --> 00:06:42.660 listen, if you really want to be a Christian, if you really want to be a part of God's family, 00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:46.360 well, then, yes, believe in Jesus, but you've got to do a little bit more. 00:06:46.900 --> 00:06:48.840 You've got to obey the special law. 00:06:48.920 --> 00:06:51.200 And if you're a bloke, you've got to be circumcised. 00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:54.620 That's what it means, really, to be a Christian. 00:06:54.620 --> 00:06:59.060 And they held really firmly on to this promise made to their forefather, Abraham. 00:06:59.819 --> 00:07:03.259 If you're not too familiar with the Bible, you find this promise in the Old Testament, 00:07:03.379 --> 00:07:06.040 which is the first half of the Bible in a book called Genesis. 00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:11.160 And in it, you see God making a promise to Abraham that he will have a son. 00:07:11.780 --> 00:07:15.259 And subsequently from his son and all the generations that flow from that, 00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:22.540 God would establish his kingdom, his nation, sorry, his family would come through this seed. 00:07:22.540 --> 00:07:27.520 And so this is a really significant promise for the Jewish people. 00:07:27.760 --> 00:07:32.460 And for the Jews at the time, the Judaizers speaking to these new Galatian Christians, 00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:34.400 they made much of it. 00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:38.700 And they wanted to say that essentially, if you did not keep the law, cannot be sure of it. 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:49.220 And you're not included. 00:07:49.220 --> 00:07:52.600 And so this is why Paul writes this letter. 00:07:53.020 --> 00:08:00.760 He writes to urge them and remind them of the gospel and to refute some of these additional arguments that are being made. 00:08:00.860 --> 00:08:05.480 And just in the verses before, the four and five that we've read things in regards to the law that are just important for us to understand. 00:08:17.679 --> 00:08:18.620 So zone in here. 00:08:18.719 --> 00:08:22.759 Two things he really wanted us to understand, or he wanted them to understand, and us today. 00:08:23.139 --> 00:08:23.959 Firstly, this. 00:08:24.219 --> 00:08:28.739 The law was never there to fully save people and bring them into God's family. 00:08:29.379 --> 00:08:30.979 Yeah, it was almost like a guardian. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:37.120 It was this law given to them at a period of time in their history to guard them and protect them. 00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:46.019 And he uses this analogy of an heir who in Roman citizen times would have been the child of a elderly, of a senior person, 00:08:46.220 --> 00:08:48.259 who would have had this guardian look after them. 00:08:48.700 --> 00:08:50.399 And they would have watched them and protected them. 00:08:50.460 --> 00:08:51.299 They would have taught them. 00:08:51.860 --> 00:08:58.279 And that guardian would have been with them for a period of time until they were ready to move into adulthood. 00:08:58.940 --> 00:08:59.700 See, I don't know. 00:08:59.740 --> 00:09:01.659 It's much like when we learn to drive, yeah? 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:03.060 You've got to drive an instructor. 00:09:03.379 --> 00:09:06.399 You've got a parent who's patient enough to sit 00:09:13.240 They help you drive according to the laws of the road until you're ready, 00:09:13.559 --> 00:09:17.759 until you've passed your test to be able to go in and be able to drive freely yourself. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.879 This was one of the purposes of the law, Paul is saying. 00:09:21.299 --> 00:09:26.039 It's there for a period of time to guard you and protect you and to help 00:10:02.120 And instead of people living up to God's laws and fulfilling all that he wants for them as they're created people by their heavenly father, 00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:03.279 what have people
