lockdown. 00:03:06.419 --> 00:03:12.319 You might be concerned about the state overreaching on personal and religious freedoms. 00:03:12.319 --> 00:03:21.079 Although legally, we're on very shaky Ezekiel Declaration. 00:04:43.959 --> 00:04:46.660 Subtitle, Watchman, It's Time to Speak. 00:04:46.660 --> 00:04:50.500 Now, in Ezekiel, it's to look out. 00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:53.760 The watchman looks out for an invading army. 00:04:54.280 --> 00:04:58.940 So in Ezekiel, that's God's judgment coming to warn people of the coming wrath. 00:04:59.360 --> 00:05:05.900 The tone of this petition is saying to our Prime Minister, if you restrict church attendance, 00:05:06.100 --> 00:05:07.740 God's judgment is coming. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.800 Accept church disobedience. 00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:20.180 I don't think this question of when is it right to disobey is the right place to start. 00:05:20.759 --> 00:05:26.240 Let me just give one reason for the sake of time and why this isn't the right place to start. 00:05:27.840 --> 00:05:34.439 In our passage this morning, Romans 13, which is the most developed teaching on the Christian's attitude 00:05:34.439 --> 00:05:41.420 and the command on Christians to respond to civil authorities, 00:05:42.060 --> 00:05:44.360 to our surprise, maybe to your disappointment, 00:05:45.079 --> 00:05:49.699 the Apostle Paul gives an unqualified endorsement of government 00:05:49.699 --> 00:05:52.540 and never answers the question. 00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:55.159 If he doesn't answer our question, 00:05:55.899 --> 00:06:00.740 we should stop and think we are probably asking the wrong question. 00:06:00.740 --> 00:06:07.879 If you are thinking it's time to disobey, let me build up your case for a moment. 00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:11.180 And to do this, get your Bible out. 00:06:11.519 --> 00:06:13.420 Let's open to Romans 13. 00:06:13.740 --> 00:06:18.939 Let's sit under God's word together and have a look at the context of Romans 13. 00:06:20.400 --> 00:06:23.040 Now, Romans, the letter was written, 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:30.319 And most scholars agree about 20 to 30 years after Jesus' death, resurrection and ascension. 00:06:31.420 --> 00:06:37.200 And as you probably know, Roman Empire was far from a democracy. 00:06:38.100 --> 00:06:39.879 The emperor at the time was Nero. 00:06:40.820 --> 00:06:43.740 And although his early reign was not so bad, 00:06:43.740 --> 00:06:50.960 later, he would hold a garden party where the lanterns in the party were Christians on stakes 00:06:50.960 --> 00:06:54.060 being burnt alive to illumine the festivities. 00:06:55.240 --> 00:06:57.540 This was a dangerous place to live. 00:06:58.500 --> 00:07:04.019 And increasingly in the church, as Jews disassociated themselves from Christians, 00:07:04.400 --> 00:07:09.500 the church found themselves with no rights, no protections whatsoever. 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:15.540 And Paul himself, who is writing this, would experience prison with a threat of death, 00:07:16.040 --> 00:07:19.680 day or night, way more than any of us are going to experience. 00:07:20.220 --> 00:07:24.240 At the end of the book of Acts, that's where we find Paul, in prison in Rome. 00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:30.720 Although we see there that Paul is in prison, that God's word is never chained. 00:07:31.860 --> 00:07:36.560 Tradition tells us that Paul himself would be beheaded in Rome. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:41.379 Surely this man would have something to say about disobedience. 00:07:42.540 --> 00:07:44.040 Now, let's get into the text. 00:07:44.220 --> 00:07:50.860 Notice the flow of Romans, how seemingly out of place these seven verses in chapter 13 are. 00:07:51.139 --> 00:07:57.220 After 11 chapters of explaining the wonderful mercy of God in saving rebellious sinners 00:07:57.220 --> 00:08:03.540 through Jesus, this new age of salvation, chapter 12 begins, 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:07.879 the implications of how we are to respond to God's mercy. 00:08:08.460 --> 00:08:10.439 Have a look at chapter 12, verses 1 and 2. 00:08:12.280 --> 00:08:16.680 I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, 00:08:16.760 --> 00:08:22.060 to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, 00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:23.740 which is your spiritual worship. 00:08:23.740 --> 00:08:31.500 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. 00:08:32.460 --> 00:08:38.440 We're not meant to live like the rest of this sinful world anymore. 00:09:06.159 And then after our section on authority in chapter 13, Paul goes back to the topic of love. 00:09:06.820 --> 00:09:07.659 It's our duty. 00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:09.360 It fulfills the law. 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:12.200 And then he finishes by motivating us. 00:09:12.860 --> 00:09:15.879 The darkness of our times is passing away. 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:18.899 But we belong to the new day of salvation. 00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:20.419 So let's act like it. 00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:23.639 Let's put on the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:24.419 --> 00:09:27.039 This age we're living in But now we have the right question. 00:10:19.800 --> 00:10:22.240 Let's listen to what the answer is. 00:10:22.360 --> 00:10:26.040 Let's humble ourselves before Romans 13. 00:10:26.039 --> 00:10:36.360 Paul doesn't say that we just need to put up with governance. 00:10:37.019 --> 00:10:41.379 He states their authority as high as it goes. 00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:44.419 He states it as positively as he can. 00:10:44.500 --> 00:10:45.659 Have a look at verse 1. 00:10:45.659 --> 00:10:55.219 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, 00:10:55.379 --> 00:11:00.319 for there is no authority except from God, 00:11:00.839 --> 00:11:04.439 and those that exist have been instituted by God. 00:11:04.919 --> 00:11:05.379 Verse 2. 00:11:05.379 --> 00:11:11.879 Therefore, 00:11:53.899 ESV tries to translate the Greek with the authorities are ministers of God. 00:11:54.620 --> 00:11:59.279 What they're trying to capture there is that word is always used 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:01.720 in terms of servants in God's temple. 00:12:01.720 --> 00:12:09.060 That's how closely Paul shows the authority of our governments 00:12:09.060 --> 00:12:11.160 to the authority of God. 00:12:11.220 --> 00:12:12.420 They are serving God. 00:12:13.200 --> 00:12:16.779 Now, they may not be conscious of this, 00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:21.420 but their authority comes from God, and they are serving God's purposes. 00:12:21.620 --> 00:12:25.300 Why God used the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, 00:12:25.899 --> 00:12:27.420 or the Persian king, Cyrus. 00:12:27.419 --> 00:12:34.759 So let me pause and ask at this point, do you believe that all levels 00:12:34.759 --> 00:12:39.240 of our government, all levels, have been put there by God 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:43.279 and have a God-given function to perform? 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:46.500 So what is that function? 00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:47.639 What is their purpose? 00:12:48.439 --> 00:12:51.759 It's very clear in here, to administer justice. 00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:54.639 Have a look at verse 3. 00:12:56.980 --> 00:13:00.379 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. 00:13:01.159 --> 00:13:03.620 Would you 00:13:27.199 embody the moral principles in God's word. 00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:29.639 Christian individuals, we hear in chapter 12, 00:13:29.740 --> 00:13:33.480 have no right to take vengeance out, but the state does. 00:13:33.480 --> 00:13:39.759 God has put the state there to reward good and punish evil, 00:13:40.159 --> 00:13:44.240 and that is a really, really good thing. 00:13:46.360 --> 00:13:52.500 There was a break-in next door to church about seven years ago 00:13:52.500 --> 00:13:54.080 after youth group. 00:13:55.080 --> 00:13:59.539 Where BCF used to be, there was this motorcycle shop. 00:13:59.680 --> 00:14:01.860 Actually, I think it's becoming a motorcycle shop again. 00:14:01.860 --> 00:14:06.500 But there was a break-in next door, and the alarm was going off, 00:14:07.060 --> 00:14:09.220 and a neighbour had called the cops. 00:14:09.800 --> 00:14:12.899 And so there was this young man and a young woman 00:14:12.899 --> 00:14:15.899 who were on our property acting suspicious. 00:14:15.899 --> 00:14:20.960 So I wasn't quite willing to leave our property at that point. 00:14:21.139 --> 00:14:24.379 But within minutes, the cops turned up. 00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:30.399 Like six or seven police cars, with their lights flashing, turned up. 00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:35.220 And they all had guns on their hips, and I was not a little bit The law can't save society, but it can restrain and preserve society. 00:15:29.780 --> 00:15:33.640 They have the God-given right to tell us what to do 00:15:33.640 --> 00:15:38.060 and then use see people running a red light late at night if they think there's no cop around, 00:16:02.359 --> 00:16:07.239 but the threat of punishment if they do get caught is a big reason 00:16:07.240 --> 00:16:13.360 why I have confidence to go through an intersection when my light turns green. 00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:21.200 Removing that lesser freedom of telling us when to stop and when to go, 00:16:21.700 --> 00:16:27.980 that threat of punishment, we actually have greater freedom to stay alive on the road. 00:16:27.980 --> 00:16:38.019 You might be feeling like the government is overusing their coercive powers at the moment. 00:16:39.659 --> 00:16:42.860 Can I just ask you to pause and ask yourself, 00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:48.779 do you recognise that they are God's servants? 00:17:18.740 And what has the New South Wales government ever done for us? 00:17:20.360 --> 00:17:23.460 Clean water supply, sanitation. 00:17:24.360 --> 00:17:24.680 Okay. 00:17:25.039 --> --> 00:18:11.440 Or do they just hear you complaining? 00:18:14.079 --> 00:18:22.099 We are called to submit not only to those in Parliament who are Christian, 00:18:22.380 --> 00:18:27.359 not only when they are carrying out God's word of what is right and wrong, 00:18:27.359 --> 00:18:30.699 but we are called to submit all the time. 00:18:31.439 --> 00:18:36.419 Submission goes deeper than our behaviour to an attitude of heart. 00:18:36.919 --> 00:18:41.240 I'm going to use Douglas Moose commentary, 00:18:41.439 --> 00:18:44.279 his definition of submission. 00:18:44.619 --> 00:18:50.240 Submission is acknowledging the divinely ordained status of government 00:18:50.240 --> 00:18:55.460 and its consequent right to demand the believers' allegiance. 00:18:56.900 --> 00:18:59.460 Now, allegiance is a strong word, isn't it? 00:19:00.460 --> 00:19:03.180 But do you remember Romans 12 verse 1? 00:19:03.299 --> 00:19:08.480 In view of God's mercy, we are to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice. 00:19:08.480 --> 00:19:12.519 It's not just our souls and our mind, our behaviour, 00:19:12.880 --> 00:19:17.620 this embodied existence, whatever situation we're in, 00:19:17.740 --> 00:19:21.400 which includes the governments over us, everything, 00:19:21.740 --> 00:19:23.740 all of life is an act of worship. 00:19:24.440 --> 00:19:26.860 Submission is an act of worship. concentration camps, is a quote. 00:21:09.139 --> 00:21:11.319 A COVID dictatorship. 00:21:11.319 --> 00:21:17.099 Calling our premiers, dictator Dan or Gulag Gladys. 00:21:19.919 --> 00:21:28.939 Trying to save lives is a far cry from the deadly regimes under Stalin or Pol Pot. 00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.819 Christians should be different in our language towards our governing authorities. 00:35:18.940 Now, many quote Acts 5 as a license to disobey government. 00:35:18.940 --> 00:35:24.500 Peter boldly says to the Jewish council, we must obey God rather than men. 00:35:25.880 --> 00:35:30.400 But those who cite this usually fail to mention the full story. 00:35:30.820 --> 00:35:34.940 Remember the respect the apostles showed those authorities. 00:35:34.940 --> 00:35:37.980 Let me recap the story. 00:35:38.119 --> 00:35:42.260 They were preaching the name of Jesus and the officials told them not to do that. 00:35:43.280 --> 00:35:45.659 They were arrested, put in prison.
