the minister there was James Phillip. 00:02:14.259 --> 00:02:16.740 He exercised a very long ministry in Edinburgh. 00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:20.319 And one thing that Mr. Phillip often said, he said, these two pictures of a worldwide invitation, of a worldwide celebration, 00:04:42.439 --> 00:04:48.219 in the Old Testament, in the New Testament, that there is something that God has done 00:04:48.219 --> 00:04:53.719 that relates to every man, woman, and child, every nation, every tribe, every tongue. 00:04:54.500 --> 00:04:58.800 So it's not surprising, therefore, when Jesus leaves felt a profound call to go to China. 00:06:08.519 --> 00:06:11.600 So, now, let me just put you in context here. 00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:15.800 At this particular stage, William Carey had already gone to India, 00:06:15.840 --> 00:06:16.720 that was a first, 00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:20.879 but no Protestant missionary had ever gone to China. 00:06:21.360 --> 00:06:22.200 Just didn't happen. 00:06:23.100 --> 00:06:27.080 There were no British ships that would carry a missionary to China. 00:06:27.760 --> 00:06:29.800 You see, the trade with China was so valuable, 00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:34.160 the last thing you would want is Christians to get in the way of making money. 00:06:34.840 --> 00:06:37.280 You know, opium, for example, was a great way of making money. 00:06:37.340
