that they are truly saved and born again in Christ. 00:02:37.079 --> 00:02:44.620 Sometimes they feel insecure because other Christians around them seem much more faith-filled or joyful or obedient. questioning their beliefs. 00:02:56.280 --> 00:03:03.159 But God doesn't want us to be unassured or insecure regarding our eternal life in Christ. 00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:08.700 And in this passage, his gospel so that we might believe and have eternal life. 00:03:57.219 --> 00:03:59.599 And John wrote 1 John, his letter, 00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:03.900 so that we who believe might know that we have eternal life. 00:04:03.900 --> 00:04:07.200 The purpose of the gospel was to persuade us. 00:04:07.480 --> 00:04:10.640 And the purpose of the letter is to reassure us. 00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:16.600 And in the rest of this passage, using a series of statements that begin with the phrase, 00:04:16.840 --> 00:04:22.180 we know, he repeats that four times in verses 15, 18, 19 to 20. 00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:24.579 We know, we know, we know. 00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:28.840 John tells us several things that we may be assured of. 00:04:28.839 --> 00:04:33.959 And the first is, we know God hears us in verses 14 to 17. 00:04:34.419 --> 00:04:37.039 And then we know God protects us in verse 18. 00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:39.899 We know that we belong to God in verse 19. 00:04:40.259 --> 00:04:44.419 And 00:05:36.000 decrees that the Jews be annihilated, 00:05:36.919 --> 00:05:40.719 Mordecai, a faithful man of God, asks Queen Esther, 00:05:40.899 --> 00:05:45.279 who is a young cousin of his that he raised up like his own adopted daughter, 00:05:45.979 --> 00:05:47.339 who has now become queen, 00:05:47.339 --> 00:05:53.219 he asks Esther to intervene on behalf of God's people, the Jews. 00:05:53.919 --> 00:05:59.179 But Esther, even though she is the treasured queen of the king, 00:05:59.799 --> 00:06:05.139 she expresses her hesitation, her fear in Esther chapter 4 verse 11. 00:06:05.739 --> 00:06:06.139 She says, 00:06:06.139 --> 00:06:12.560 All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if any man or woman 00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:16.399 goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, 00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:20.439 there is but one law to be put to death, 00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:26.459 except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter so that he may live. 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:31.659 But as for me, I have not been called to come into the king these 30 days. 00:06:31.660 --> 00:06:37.480 But Mordecai implores her and Esther finally concedes. 00:06:37.640 --> 00:06:41.020 And as she does that, she says this in chapter 4 verse 16 of Esther, 00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:46.140 Go gather all the Jews to be found in Susa and hold a fast on my behalf. 00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:49.379 And do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. 00:06:49.720 --> 00:06:52.280 I and my young women will also fast as you do. 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:55.759 Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law. 00:06:55.859 --> 00:06:58.199 And if I perish, I perish. 00:06:59.859 --> 00:07:03.119 Thankfully, when Esther goes into the king's presence, 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:06.639 the king does extend the golden scepter to her, shows favor to her. 00:07:07.419 --> 00:07:10.679 But note Esther's fear and reluctance. 00:07:11.179 --> without his summons. 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:26.699 It's hard for us to understand because we live in an egalitarian society 00:07:26.699 --> 00:07:28.599 with unprecedented freedoms. 00:07:28.599 --> 00:07:30.839 That is the United States of America. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:36.319 And we live in a country where authority figures are widely distrusted 00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:40.039 and frequently reviled or derided. 00:07:40.980 --> 00:07:46.920 And so we have no idea what it's like to approach the throne room of a king. 00:07:46.920 --> 00:07:55.640 The king is not a chummy buddy that you can text or call or visit whenever you wish. 00:07:55.640 --> 00:07:59.920 You only come to the king when he summons you. 00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:04.540 And yet, it says in verse 14, 00:08:04.540 --> 00:08:09.460 that we may have confidence toward him, before God. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.300 We may be frank with him. 00:08:12.600 --> 00:08:15.640 We may be bold in his presence. 00:08:16.180 --> own parents, 00:09:50.799 --> 00:09:51.779 they are loud, 00:09:52.119 --> 00:09:52.859 they're bold, 00:09:53.099 --> 00:09:53.959 they're confident, 00:09:54.199 --> 00:09:55.359 they're insistent. name what you want 00:12:04.820 --> 00:12:07.180 and claim it in faith, 00:12:07.300 --> 00:12:08.620 that it will be yours. 00:12:09.139 --> 00:12:10.840 And that all unanswered prayers 00:12:10.840 --> 00:12:13.039 are simply evidence of a lack of faith. 00:12:13.700 --> 00:12:16.440 But that's a profoundly unbiblical idea. 00:12:17.500 --> 00:12:18.759 Prayer of faith is not simply 00:12:19.379
