Let me read for us. 00:01:18.280 --> 00:01:25.099 And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place? 00:01:26.359 --> 00:01:29.359 And he asked them, How many loaves do you have? 00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:31.500 And they said, Seven. 00:01:32.379 --> 00:01:34.859 And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. 00:01:35.740 --> 00:01:41.359 And he you've been following Mark's gospel up to this point, his account of the life of Jesus, 00:02:21.480 --> 00:02:25.240 this particular story probably sounds familiar. 00:02:26.099 --> 00:02:28.580 There's a great crowd in a desolate place. 00:02:29.219 --> 00:02:30.280 Jesus is teaching them. 00:02:30.280 --> 00:02:32.080 The people are hungry. 00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:39.840 And miraculously, thousands are fed with just a meager amount of food. 00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:44.400 Very similar story to what we heard back in chapter 6. 00:02:46.060 --> 00:02:50.460 Some lessons, it seems, have to be learned more than once. 00:02:50.460 --> 00:03:02.180 And so again, we see the compassion and the power of Jesus to work savingly and satisfyingly for the hungry crowds. 00:03:02.920 --> 00:03:05.560 We're told again, they ate and were satisfied. 00:03:07.740 --> 00:03:11.480 But if we are careful readers of the gospel of Mark, 00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:18.659 we realize that this isn't just a retelling of the same story that we heard before back in chapter 6. 00:03:18.659 --> 00:03:20.159 There are differences. 00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:23.859 There, the crowd was 5,000 men. 00:03:24.539 --> 00:03:26.960 Presumably plus women and children on top of that. 00:03:27.500 --> 00:03:30.219 Here, the total crowd is 4,000. 00:03:31.079 --> 00:03:34.639 There, the disciples raised the issue of the hungry crowds. 00:03:35.219 --> 00:03:37.120 Here, it's Jesus who takes the initiative. 00:03:38.300 --> 00:03:41.919 There, the leftovers filled 12 small knapsacks, 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.280 which is what the word basket means in chapter 6. 00:03:44.280 --> 00:03:46.740 Here, the leftovers fill seven large bins. 00:03:46.939 --> 00:03:49.719 It's actually a different word for basket here in this story. 00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:58.000 But perhaps the most significant difference between the feeding of the 5,000 and the feeding of the 4,000 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:00.580 is found when we consider the context. 00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:04.219 In chapter 7, verse 31, remember, 00:04:04.340 --> 00:04:09.699 we learned that Jesus has been ministering at this part of his ministry in the region of the Decapolis. 00:04:09.699 --> 00:04:14.060 That is an area on the northeastern side of the Sea of Galilee 00:04:14.060 --> 00:04:17.060 that was known to be a largely Gentile region. 00:04:19.099 --> 00:04:21.240 And as chapter 8 begins, Mark says, 00:04:21.240 --> 00:04:46.699 So consider then what Mark is showing us. 00:04:46.699 --> 00:04:50.560 And it's something that's actually been brewing all of chapter 7. 00:04:51.240 --> 00:04:54.759 Remember, in chapter 7, Jesus was debating purity laws with the Pharisees, 00:04:54.879 --> 00:04:58.079 and then he was commending the faith of a Syrophoenician woman, 00:04:58.199 --> 00:05:01.579 and then healing a man in the Decapolis who was deaf and unable to speak. 00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:06.439 What we see here is the compassion and the power of Jesus 00:05:06.439 --> 00:05:09.620 extending beyond the boundaries of Israel 00:05:09.620 --> 00:05:12.219 and reaching to the nations. 00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:19.000 Of course, this is just a foreshadowing of what was to come. 00:05:19.900 --> 00:05:22.040 You know, the Gentile mission won't begin in earnest 00:05:22.040 --> 00:05:25.740 until after Jesus' resurrection and ascension to the Father's right hand. 00:05:26.300 --> 00:05:29.440 Then the risen Jesus tells his disciples to carry the gospel, 00:05:29.560 --> 00:05:31.040 the good news of the forgiveness of sins, 00:05:31.340 --> 00:05:34.280 to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 00:05:34.279 --> 00:05:40.139 But that mission to the ends of the earth is seen even here. 00:05:42.119 --> 00:05:44.959 Jesus is the Savior for the whole world, 00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:47.539 not just for Israel. 00:05:48.819 --> 00:05:51.759 The bread he came to supply wasn't just for insiders, 00:05:52.259 --> 00:05:55.039 for religious people, for folks who knew their Bibles 00:05:55.039 --> 00:05:57.179 and lived what seemed to be a good life. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:59.859 No, Jesus had come for everyone, 00:05:59.860 --> 00:06:02.660 for the outsiders too, 00:06:03.540 --> 00:06:06.480 for folks who didn't know much about religion or God, 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:10.080 for folks who couldn't find their way around the Bible 00:06:10.080 --> 00:06:12.740 unless someone gave them a page number, right? 00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:16.520 For folks whose lives were mixed up and broken 00:06:16.520 --> 00:06:18.860 and in obvious need of help. 00:06:20.540 --> 00:06:21.900 Jesus came for everyone. 00:06:23.020 --> 00:06:24.860 He's the Savior of the whole world. 00:06:24.860 --> 00:06:29.939 So consider what this means for us today. 00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:34.080 You don't need me to tell you that we live in a city 00:06:34.080 --> 00:06:36.639 where most people aren't really that familiar 00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:38.379 with Christianity or with the Bible 00:06:38.379 --> 00:06:40.759 and not really familiar with what it means 00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:42.860 to live a life in line with the truth and goodness 00:06:42.860 --> 00:06:44.360 of who God is in Christ. 00:06:45.560 --> 00:06:46.819 And maybe that's you this morning. 00:06:47.800 --> 00:06:50.240 Maybe you're just beginning to explore spiritual things 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:52.040 and maybe you're not sure what to make of God 00:06:52.040 --> 00:06:53.199 or Jesus or any of it. your hungry soul 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:13.560 if you come to him. 00:07:15.060 --> 00:07:18.000 It doesn't matter where you're from, 00:07:18.580 --> 00:07:21.100 which side of the lake or tracks 00:07:21.100 --> 00:07:24.120 or what side of the educational spectrum you're from. 00:07:24.860 --> 00:07:28.400 Whether your life has been good or bad or in between. 00:07:31.500 --> 00:07:32.780 Of we think we are. 00:07:56.299 --> 00:07:58.019 Jesus knew how far away 00:07:58.019 --> 00:08:00.039 some of these people had come to be with him. 00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:02.979 And he knows how far away you've been 00:08:02.979 --> 00:08:05.179 and how far away I've been. 00:08:06.779 --> 00:08:08.299 And how does he view us? 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:10.819 With compassion 00:08:10.819 --> 00:08:12.779 and with mercy. 00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:17.219 You see, this is the great truth 00:08:17.219 --> 00:08:18.399 that every follower of Jesus 00:08:18.399 --> 00:08:19.860 learns sooner or later 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:20.939 and that all of the apostles 00:08:20.939 --> 00:08:22.360 came to learn in time, certainly. 00:08:23.939 --> 00:08:26.420 That what puts someone right with God 00:08:26.420 --> 00:08:28.959 isn't their pedigree 00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:30.680 or their family history 00:08:30.680 --> 00:08:32.759 or their law-keeping 00:08:32.759 --> 00:08:34.740 or their moral record 00:08:34.740 --> 00:08:36.639 or their religious fervor. 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:39.139 It didn't matter 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:39.980 if you were from 00:08:39.980 --> 00:08:41.340 the heart of Jerusalem 00:08:41.340 --> 00:08:43.240 or from the pagan cities 00:08:43.240 --> 00:08:44.240 of the Decapolis. 00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:46.299 None of that 00:08:46.299 --> 00:08:48.159 put them in a right relationship with God. 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:50.980 At the end of the day, 00:08:50.980 --> 00:08:53.080 the most devout, law-abiding Jew 00:08:53.080 --> 00:08:55.980 and the most pagan, immoral Gentile 00:08:56.480 --> 00:09:00.519 were both utterly and equally lost. 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:05.100 Both had sinned against a holy God 00:09:05.100 --> 00:09:08.299 and both needed a radical rescue 00:09:08.299 --> 00:09:10.319 that only God could provide. 00:09:13.259 --> 00:09:15.279 Now, that's hard to wrap our minds around, right? 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:15.659 I mean,
