to be talking or looking at Psalm 46. 00:02:35.780 --> 00:02:39.740 And as we look at Psalm 46, it's going to address the topic of fear. 00:02:41.479 --> 00:02:45.919 In fact, that's something that I've been thinking a lot about over the last couple weeks. 00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:52.639 It's certainly our experience, right, during these times that we have the emotion of fear. 00:02:53.359 --> 00:02:59.619 And yet we're going to see in this passage that God's going to tell us not to fear, which 00:02:59.619 --> 00:03:01.899 can be confusing at times for us as Christians. 00:03:02.019 --> 00:03:03.959 So we're going to look at what that actually means. 00:03:04.619 --> 00:03:09.519 Just like I'm concerned at times when people say, have faith, depending on what they mean 00:03:09.519 --> 00:03:09.899 by that. 00:03:09.900 --> 00:03:12.340 I'm also concerned sometimes when people say, don't fear. 00:03:13.240 --> 00:03:17.659 Do they mean that this is a license for foolishness, for example? 00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:21.879 Does not having fear mean we can do whatever we want without fear of consequence? 00:03:23.099 --> 00:03:26.159 Perhaps telling someone not to fear is a tool of shame, right? 00:03:26.200 --> 00:03:31.200 They're sharing with you some of their frustrations and what they think might happen in the future, 00:03:31.200 --> 00:03:32.599 and you'd rather not listen to it. 00:03:32.599 --> 00:03:34.579 And so you just tell them not to be afraid. 00:03:35.939 --> 00:03:40.019 There are certainly appropriate ways to use fear and inappropriate, and so we're when we came to Psalm 13, I shared with you the idea of the open when letter. 00:06:30.379 --> 00:06:38.680 If you've been in a long distance relationship or you just have someone that you care about, a friend who's gone for a long time, maybe this is something on a deployment. 00:06:39.240 --> 00:06:46.800 You might set together a list of letters, make a stack of letters, and you'd say you open this letter when a certain situation happens. 00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:48.800 Open this letter when you're sad. 00:06:49.819 --> 00:06:52.020 Open this letter when you've had a bad day. 00:06:53.259 --> 00:06:55.819 Open this letter when you're missing home. 00:06:57.280 --> 00:07:01.439 And as I told you then, the Psalms are God's open when letters. 00:07:02.699 --> 00:07:10.620 He gives us different Psalms for different circumstances, knowing that we'll face all kinds of trials and struggles in this life. 00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:16.000 This Psalm, Psalm 46, is an open when Psalm for times of crisis. 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:23.879 God knows that there will be times when we feel like the world is falling apart. 00:07:25.400 --> 00:07:29.980 And he cares so much that he's given us a Psalm for moments like that. 00:07:31.040 --> 00:07:33.879 And that Psalm, one of them, is Psalm 46. 00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:37.120 It's a Psalm for when the world is falling apart. 00:07:37.219 --> 00:07:41.920 And here, what's described is the world is actually literally falling apart. 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:45.000 Verses 2 and 3. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:51.639 We will not fear, though the earth 00:07:59.860 In other words, things are so bad that the very mountains are falling. 00:07:59.860 --> 00:08:07.240 I wonder if you've felt like the mountains are falling the last couple weeks. 00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:12.420 And maybe, like, the world is literally falling apart. 00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:16.780 Maybe it's something in your personal life. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.360 Maybe you're an extrovert. 00:08:27.759 --> 00:08:29.139 And you're not just a normal extrovert. 00:08:29.199 --> 00:08:30.220 You're a super extrovert. 00:08:30.220 --> 00:08:34.180 And suddenly, you find yourself in your worst nightmare. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:36.120 Having to stay at home. 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:42.460 Maybe your world's falling apart because you relied on the schools and what they provided. 00:08:42.600 --> 00:08:43.139 The structure. 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:46.379 And then suddenly, all your children are at home. 00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:48.960 And you have to figure out what's next. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:52.259 All sorts of things are collapsing. 00:08:52.420 --> 00:08:53.800 Maybe it's a bigger picture. 00:08:53.940 --> 00:08:55.460 Maybe it's not something in your personal life. 00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:56.920 But you look at the world around us. 00:08:56.919 --> 00:09:00.199 And you think, there are things that seem so secure. 00:09:00.339 --> 00:09:01.740 In fact, that's part of the point of this psalm. 00:09:01.799 --> 00:09:02.559 The mountains, right? 00:09:02.879 --> 00:09:04.759 What could be more secure than the mountains? 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:10.019 What could be more secure than our healthcare system? 00:09:11.439 --> 00:09:14.079 What could be more secure than our economic system? 00:09:15.639 --> 00:09:19.259 What could be more secure than our government? 00:09:19.259 --> 00:09:30.240 Times of crisis highlight that there are many things that are not as strong or reliable or secure as we once thought they were. 00:09:31.460 --> 00:09:35.399 It can feel like the mountains are falling into the sea. 00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:37.360 It was all a facade or an illusion, right? 00:09:37.419 --> 00:09:40.039 An illusion of security or control. 00:09:41.159 --> 00:09:44.460 That's what the psalmist is speaking to in this passage. 00:09:44.519 --> 00:09:46.879 And he tells us in the middle what we can do. 00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:48.779 In verse 2, he says, 00:09:48.899 --> 00:09:51.279 Therefore, we will not fear. 00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:58.480 In the midst of this trial, in the midst of this trouble, in the midst of a situation where it feels like the world is literally falling apart, 00:09:58.600 --> 00:10:01.360 the psalmist comes and says, God's people won't fear. 00:10:03.799 --> 00:10:09.039 Which raises the question, what exactly does he mean by fear in that moment? 00:10:09.159 --> 00:10:10.879 What's being described here? 00:10:10.940 --> 00:10:13.200 There's different types of fear, different kinds of fear. 00:10:13.620 --> 00:10:15.539 And it's important for us not to confuse them. 00:10:15.539 --> 00:10:17.439 I've been asking this question the last couple weeks. 00:10:17.539 --> 00:10:19.319 What is good fear and wrong fear? 00:10:19.399 --> 00:10:21.519 What's appropriate and inappropriate fear? 00:10:22.059 --> 00:10:25.860 And there's one man, a pastor named Michael Coggin, who's really helpful. 00:10:26.419 --> 00:10:30.139 And he's given some categories for fear to help us think through these things. 00:10:30.719 --> 00:10:32.179 He gives four types of fear. 00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:33.719 I'm just going to highlight two of them. 00:10:34.099 --> 00:10:38.439 The first type is this, a God-given emotional response for our benefit. 00:10:38.440 --> 00:10:44.620 A God-given emotional response for our benefit. 00:10:44.700 --> 00:10:47.140 In other words, there's actually types of fear that are good. 00:10:48.460 --> 00:10:51.840 There's types of fear that are helpful for us that are gifts from God. 00:10:51.900 --> 00:10:52.640 I'll give you an example. 00:10:53.280 --> 00:10:57.380 Some of you may remember in September of 2018, I was gone for a couple Sundays, 00:10:57.380 --> 00:11:00.120 and I was in Breckenridge taking some time away. 00:11:00.220 --> 00:11:02.660 And while I was there, I took a hike on the Peaks Trail, 00:11:03.219 --> 00:11:06.120 which is in the White River National Forest. 00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:08.600 It's right by Peak 7, if you're a skier. 00:11:09.620 --> 00:11:11.919 And while I was hiking on that trail all by myself, 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:15.620 enjoying some good introvert time, I came across a moose. 00:11:17.059 --> 00:11:19.319 Now, if you're familiar with the moose, 00:11:19.379 --> 00:11:21.919 you know that it's not a safe or tame animal. 00:11:22.899 --> 00:11:25.480 And in that moment, when I saw this moose coming towards me, 00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:26.639 I'm walking along the trail. 00:11:26.779 --> 00:11:29.379 It's coming from my right side towards me. 00:11:29.620 --> 00:11:31.879 There's a sense of fear that I felt, right? 00:11:33.659 --> 00:11:36.279 And in that fear, what I didn't do was I didn't say, 00:11:36.419 --> 00:11:37.899 well, I have faith. 00:11:38.759 --> 00:11:40.879 And God tells me not to fear. 00:11:41.419 --> 00:11:43.799 So I'm going to look this moose in the eyes, 00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:46.279 and I'm going to let him know that I'm not afraid. 00:11:47.779 --> 00:11:49.740 No, that wouldn't be faith, right? 00:11:49.779 --> 00:11:50.579 That wouldn't be faith. 00:11:50.659 --> 00:11:51.719 That would be foolishness. 00:11:52.339 --> 00:11:54.939 The last thing I want is an encounter with this moose. 00:11:55.639 --> 00:11:57.879 This moose does not have good things in mind for me, 00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:01.019 and so I used my God-given Lamberfittis, 00:12:01.019 --> 00:12:02.299 and I got out of there. 00:12:03.480 --> 00:12:07.819 In that moment, fear was a gift from God to me. 00:12:08.600 --> 00:12:12.419 It was a gift to help me take the right and appropriate action 00:12:12.419 --> 00:12:13.439 in that situation. 00:12:13.579 --> 00:12:15.439 I mention that because sometimes I've heard, 00:12:15.539 --> 00:12:16.240 even in this crisis, 00:12:16.659 --> 00:12:18.980 people misusing this idea of not having fear. 00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:21.559 They might say, well, we have faith, right? 00:12:21.779 --> 00:12:23.480 God is going to take care of us, 00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:25.399 and so we don't need to worry about the virus. 00:12:25.799 --> 00:12:28.659 We're going to go out into wherever we want, 00:12:28.659 --> 00:12:29.879 whatever group we want to, 00:12:30.120 --> 00:12:32.379 and we're not going to be scared or afraid 00:12:32.379 --> 00:12:33.879 because God is so great, 00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:37.199 and yet that's not faith. 00:12:37.600 --> 00:12:38.799 That's foolishness. 00:12:39.659 --> 00:12:42.059 There is a right and good fear 00:12:42.059 --> 00:12:43.939 of things that are threatening in this world. 00:12:44.079 --> 00:12:46.539 God gives us fear to help us. 00:12:47.219 --> 00:12:48.639 It's an emotional response 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:50.339 that's meant to propel us to action, 00:12:50.439 --> 00:12:51.639 often the right action, 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:55.679 and so that's a category one of fear. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:58.000 It's not always wrong to feel afraid. 00:12:59.299 --> 00:13:01.059 Sometimes, in fact, it's a gift from God. 00:13:01.179 --> 00:13:02.979 Imagine, for example, if I had decided 00:13:02.979 --> 00:13:05.399 I was not going to do anything about this moose. 00:13:05.419 --> 00:13:06.959 I was just going to stand there on the trail. 00:13:08.099 --> 00:13:09.819 That might not have ended very well. 00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:14.579 The next category that I'm going to highlight 00:13:14.579 --> 00:13:15.759 is a different one, 00:13:15.879 --> 00:13:18.259 fear as a sinful response 00:13:18.259 --> 00:13:20.240 to God's providential care. 00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:24.399 Fear as a sinful response 00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:26.379 to God's providential care. 00:13:26.580 --> 00:13:27.759 This is the kind of fear 00:13:27.759 --> 00:13:30.120 that's being talked about in this psalm. 00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:32.480 And this man, Michael Coggin, 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:33.820 defines it this way, 00:13:33.960 --> 00:13:36.940 our default mode is to doubt God's goodness. 00:13:39.580 --> 00:13:42.259 We know that we've slipped into that kind of fear 00:13:42.259 --> 00:13:44.500 when our default mode is to doubt God's goodness. 00:13:45.680 --> 00:13:47.279 He also describes it this way, 00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:49.680 the belief, I have to do this on my own. 00:13:50.899 --> 00:13:51.860 God isn't good, 00:13:52.180 --> 00:13:55.419 and it's up to me to make it happen. 00:13:57.120 --> 00:13:58.340 I actually don't believe 00:13:58.340 --> 00:14:00.000 that God's a good and loving father. 00:14:00.919 --> 00:14:04.480 Instead, I believe that he has left me alone as an orphan. 00:14:05.700 --> 00:14:07.039 That's the type of fear 00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:09.480 that's being talked about in this psalm. 00:14:12.419 --> 00:14:15.779 And so that's what we are talking about in verse two 00:14:15.779 --> 00:14:16.259 when we say, 00:14:16.580 --> 00:14:17.600 therefore we will not fear, 00:14:18.100 --> 00:14:19.740 though the earth gives way. 00:14:19.740 --> 00:14:22.419 We continue to believe that God's a good father. 00:14:24.200 --> 00:14:25.960 And we know that we're not alone, 00:14:26.620 --> 00:14:28.980 and we don't have to do it all by ourselves. 00:14:29.620 --> 00:14:32.120 We know, as the psalmist is going to highlight later, 00:14:32.360 --> 00:14:34.060 that God is with us. 00:14:34.100 --> 00:14:36.620 He says that in verses seven and 11. 00:14:37.680 --> 00:14:38.960 But before we get there, 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:40.759 it's easy on the one hand to say, 00:14:40.840 --> 00:14:41.259 don't fear. 00:14:41.340 --> 00:14:42.680 It's a much harder thing to do. 00:14:42.679 --> 00:14:45.620 So what is it that helps us not to fear? 00:14:46.539 --> 00:14:49.099 What are the tools that we have 00:14:49.099 --> 00:14:51.659 when the mountains are moved into the heart of the sea? 00:14:52.479 --> 00:14:54.159 Well, the psalmist goes on to tell us, 00:14:54.179 --> 00:14:55.959 and he's telling us in verses four through seven 00:14:55.959 --> 00:14:57.000 about God's city. 00:14:58.079 --> 00:15:00.399 And there's a contrast here being drawn 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:02.479 between what's happening in the world 00:15:02.479 --> 00:15:04.179 and what's happening in God's place. 00:15:04.179 --> 00:15:05.559 In the world, 00:15:06.299 --> 00:15:08.299 the mountains are moved into the heart of the sea. 00:15:08.519 --> 00:15:10.559 There's these threatening waters, right, 00:15:10.620 --> 00:15:13.799 that are roaring and foaming, verse three. 00:15:14.959 --> 00:15:15.739 In God's city, 00:15:16.339 --> 00:15:17.239 things are different. 00:15:18.019 --> 00:15:18.799 There's a river, 00:15:19.199 --> 00:15:19.799 not an ocean, 00:15:20.519 --> 00:15:21.399 and it's not roaring. 00:15:21.639 --> 00:15:23.799 This river has streams 00:15:23.799 --> 00:15:25.419 that make glad the city of God. 00:15:25.419 --> 00:15:29.120 So rather than being a place of chaos, 00:15:29.379 --> 00:15:31.979 it's a place of peace and blessing. 00:15:32.120 --> 00:15:34.099 It's not waters that destroy, 00:15:34.979 --> 00:15:36.899 but a river that gives life. 00:15:38.419 --> 00:15:39.539 We see the same thing 00:15:39.539 --> 00:15:41.740 in verses two
