Israelites, 00:05:54.259 --> 00:05:55.519 and that includes in Jesus' day, 00:05:55.619 --> 00:05:57.239 their expectations were low 00:05:57.239 --> 00:05:58.479 in terms of how this promise 00:05:58.479 --> 00:05:59.339 would be fulfilled. 00:06:00.159 --> 00:06:00.799 This Messiah, 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:01.959 he would be a strong king. 00:06:03.079 --> 00:06:04.059 He would have a settled 00:06:04.059 --> 00:06:05.099 political kingdom. 00:06:05.299 --> 00:06:06.559 There might be freedom and peace 00:06:06.559 --> 00:06:07.859 for the people of God 00:06:07.859 --> 00:06:09.359 in their land. 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:10.860 But we're going to see 00:06:10.860 --> 00:06:12.060 that God's fulfillment 00:06:12.060 --> 00:06:14.139 is far bigger 00:06:14.139 --> us? 00:06:51.560 --> 00:06:53.199 We turn to the gospels. 00:06:53.300 --> 00:06:54.019 Maybe we wonder, 00:06:54.420 --> 00:06:56.620 why is it that Matthew and Luke, 00:06:56.660 --> 00:06:57.879 as they tell the story of Jesus, 00:06:58.259 --> 00:06:59.319 why do they highlight, 00:06:59.420 --> 00:07:00.060 again and again, 00:07:00.519 --> 00:07:01.899 Jesus born in David's city? 00:07:02.439 --> 00:07:03.939 Jesus comes from David's family. 00:07:04.300 --> 00:07:05.899 Jesus fulfills David's promise. 00:07:07.420 --> 00:07:08.819 To help us, 00:07:09.720 --> 00:07:11.279 we're going to 00:07:30.860 made to Abraham. 00:07:31.140 --> 00:07:32.500 But there are also going to be 00:07:32.500 --> 00:07:33.060 these promises 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:34.240 that connect us forward 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:36.319 to King Jesus, 00:07:37.319 --> 00:07:38.840 to the good news of the gospel. 00:07:39.340 --> 00:07:40.759 Because in this promise 00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:41.819 made to David, 00:07:43.259 --> 00:07:45.080 the Spirit gives us eyes to see, 00:07:45.079 --> 00:07:48.680 we will see the glory of Christ. 00:07:49.639 --> 00:07:51.099 We will see the hope 00:07:51.099 --> 00:08:15.139 God speaks of building 00:08:15.139 --> 00:08:15.860 a house for David. 00:08:16.019 --> 00:08:17.899 His house building is there. 00:08:18.860 --> 00:08:20.099 So let's work through 00:08:20.099 --> 00:08:21.539 the text very briefly, 00:08:21.699 --> 00:08:22.599 thinking first about 00:08:22.599 --> 00:08:25.120 David's housing crisis. 00:08:26.180 --> 00:08:27.300 If you look in your Bibles, 00:08:27.399 --> 00:08:29.079 do you see the crisis there 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:30.719 in the first three verses? 00:08:32.740 --> 00:08:34.120 God has settled the king 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:34.700 in his palace 00:08:34.700 --> 00:08:35.679 and given him rest. 00:08:36.779 --> 00:08:38.679 God has established 00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:39.679 David as king, 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:41.919 and David's instinct 00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:42.699 in response, 00:08:43.859 --> 00:08:45.099 God has given me rest. 00:08:45.239 --> 00:08:45.879 I want to build 00:08:45.879 --> 00:08:47.659 a resting place for God. 00:08:48.659 --> 00:08:50.219 We recognize again 00:08:50.219 --> 00:08:52.339 that David has a profound concern 00:08:52.339 --> 00:08:53.599 for God's glory. 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:55.279 We already saw it 00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:56.259 in chapter 6. 00:08:57.439 --> 00:08:59.199 As he worshiped, 00:08:59.620 --> 00:09:01.039 as he wanted the ark 00:09:01.039 --> 00:09:03.779 to be brought to Jerusalem, 00:09:04.179 --> 00:09:05.299 he wanted to connect 00:09:05.299 --> 00:09:07.479 his throne with God's throne 00:09:07.479 --> 00:09:09.079 to show that he was living 00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:09.980 as God's king 00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:11.720 under God's rule. 00:09:14.139 --> 00:09:15.560 And he's still concerned 00:09:15.560 --> 00:09:16.440 for the glory of God. 00:09:16.520 --> 00:09:17.560 And so he has this problem, 00:09:17.660 --> 00:09:18.620 he has this crisis. 00:09:18.920 --> 00:09:19.379 Verse 2, 00:09:19.500 --> 00:09:20.860 he explains it to Nathan, 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:21.379 the prophet. 00:09:21.800 --> 00:09:22.720 Here I am, 00:09:23.400 --> 00:09:24.480 living in a house of cedar. 00:09:24.540 --> 00:09:25.680 I've got this great big 00:09:25.680 --> 00:09:27.139 luxurious palace, 00:09:28.139 --> 00:09:29.220 but God's ark, 00:09:29.400 --> 00:09:30.900 the symbol of God's presence, 00:09:31.180 --> 00:09:32.220 the symbol of God's rule, 00:09:33.180 --> 00:09:33.940 it's in a tent. 00:09:35.140 --> 00:09:36.640 That doesn't seem right to David. 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.000 Nathan recognizes David's heart, 00:09:40.519 --> 00:09:42.100 he recognizes his instinct is right, 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:43.059 whatever you have in mind, 00:09:43.159 --> 00:09:44.379 go ahead and do it, 00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:46.159 for the Lord is with you, 00:09:46.860 --> 00:09:47.639 though we'll discover, 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:48.240 God says, 00:09:48.319 --> 00:09:50.139 not yet and not you. 00:09:50.779 --> 00:09:52.379 That's David's housing crisis, 00:09:52.779 --> 00:09:54.039 but from that, 00:09:54.659 --> 00:09:55.779 we discover something 00:09:55.779 --> 00:09:58.779 of God's housing policy, 00:09:58.779 --> 00:09:59.779 because in verse 4, 00:10:00.679 --> 00:10:01.980 the word of the Lord comes. 00:10:02.919 --> 00:10:03.879 It comes through Nathan. 00:10:04.699 --> 00:10:06.000 And the response is that 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:06.799 there is something 00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:09.539 that is far more important to God 00:10:09.539 --> 00:10:12.559 than living in a solid structure, 00:10:12.659 --> 00:10:14.659 than living in a cedar house. 00:10:15.019 --> 00:10:16.839 And that more important principle 00:10:16.839 --> 00:10:18.139 is what we can call 00:10:18.139 --> 00:10:20.819 the Emmanuel principle. 00:10:21.559 --> 00:10:24.179 This principle that God desires 00:10:24.179 --> 00:10:27.199 to live with his people, 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:29.439 God with us, 00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:30.219 God with his people. 00:10:30.500 --> 00:10:32.000 So in verses 6 and 7, 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:33.279 that's what he says, 00:10:33.319 --> 00:10:34.599 it was true for Israel. 00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:36.500 During the time of the Exodus 00:10:36.500 --> 00:10:37.399 and in the wilderness, 00:10:38.539 --> 00:10:39.559 I have been moving 00:10:39.559 --> word who became flesh 00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:26.379 and dwelt among us. 00:11:27.639 --> 00:11:28.879 And we have seen his glory, 00:11:29.539 --> 00:11:30.419 the glory of God 00:11:30.419 --> --> 00:11:41.740 in verses 11 to 16, 00:11:41.860 --> 00:11:45.579 we see the house building project. 00:11:46.620 --> 00:11:48.599 Three details that stand out. 00:11:48.679 --> 00:11:49.259 First of all, 00:11:49.699 --> 00:11:50.839 God will say to David, 00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:51.200 David, 00:11:51.560 --> 00:11:52.879 you will not build 00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:54.920 the house for me 00:11:54.920 --> 00:11:57.639 in the sense of a dwelling place. 00:11:58.139 --> 00:11:59.920 We discover in verse 12 and 13 00:11:59.920 --> 00:12:02.800 that that's going to be Solomon's job 00:12:02.800 --> 00:12:05.820 and Jesus is going to come 00:12:05.820 --> 00:12:07.379 and he's going to be the true temple 00:12:07.379 --> 00:12:09.480 and establish a kingdom 00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:10.300 that lasts forever. 00:12:10.560 --> 00:12:12.519 But David is not going to build the house. 00:12:12.620 --> 00:12:14.139 He's not going to build the dwelling place. 00:12:14.139 --> 00:12:17.299 But God will build David's house. 00:12:17.860 --> 00:12:19.360 We'll establish a dynasty. 00:12:19.539 --> 00:12:21.439 We'll establish a royal family 00:12:21.439 --> 00:12:23.120 for David. 00:12:23.819 --> 00:12:25.919 The Lord declares to you 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:27.840 that the Lord himself 00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:30.199 will establish a house for you. 00:12:31.199 --> 00:12:33.340 There's a principle of grace going on here. 00:12:34.819 --> 00:12:36.600 That the first thing that needs to happen 00:12:36.600 --> 00:12:38.580 is that God must first 00:12:38.580 -->
