WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.660 Well, Mark sets the scene for the telling of this event by noting how the disciples had recently returned from their evangelistic mission. 00:00:10.220 --> 00:00:16.679 You remember from our study earlier in the chapter, Jesus had sent the apostles out on their first kind of mini mission, 00:00:17.019 --> 00:00:24.920 and they were going about the regions of Galilee, and they were preaching his word, and they were performing his works. 00:00:25.300 --> 00:00:26.020 That's important. 00:00:26.400 --> 00:00:30.500 They were doing it in his name, and that's exactly what the focus of their mission was. 00:00:30.500 --> 00:00:36.420 They preached the gospel of the kingdom, and they performed the works that Jesus had given them authority to do, 00:00:36.540 --> 00:00:39.920 casting out demons and healing the sick and so on. 00:00:40.439 --> 00:00:44.780 And as a result of that, the name of Jesus spread even further than it had already spread. 00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:51.480 In fact, last week, we realized that the name of Jesus spread all the way to the courts of King Herod, 00:00:51.479 --> 00:00:55.339 or King Herod the Tetrarch of Galilee and Perea. 00:00:56.479 --> 00:01:05.239 And Mark uses the arrest and death and execution of John the Baptist really as a way of reflecting the passing of time. 00:01:05.659 --> 00:01:13.719 And now he's returning back to this issue of the disciples' mission as they are now gathering back to Jesus. 00:01:13.719 --> 00:01:18.599 And so if you're just really kind of outlining or sketching out what's actually happening in this chapter, 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:23.659 Jesus teaches the lesson in Nazareth about rejection, and then he sends the disciples out, 00:01:23.680 --> 00:01:25.079 and he gives them the instructions there. 00:01:25.219 --> 00:01:30.519 And then Mark kind of reflects this passing of time, and he tells this story about John the Baptist, 00:01:30.620 --> 00:01:35.780 how he was arrested and how he was put to death, and how King Herod was struggling over who exactly Jesus was. 00:01:35.780 --> 00:01:39.820 Well, now that he's finished that particular story, he's returning to the disciples. 00:01:40.019 --> 00:01:45.040 The time has passed. Their limited time for their mission has passed, and they're gathering back to Jesus. 00:01:45.240 --> 00:01:48.920 And as they gather back to Jesus, there's really two things that they're doing. reporting in verse 30. 00:01:58.260 --> 00:02:04.620 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 00:02:05.340 --> 00:02:10.879 So you can probably imagine the excitement on the faces of these men as they gather back, 00:02:10.900 --> 00:02:12.480 and they're reunited with Jesus. 00:02:12.759 --> 00:02:14.400 They're reunited with one another. 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:17.259 And you can imagine the stories that they begin to tell. 00:02:18.280 --> 00:02:22.340 Excitement about all that God had done through them in preaching the gospel, 00:02:22.460 --> 00:02:25.400 the people that they were able to heal in the name of Jesus, 00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:31.240 and the demons they were able to have authority over because of the authority that Jesus had given them. 00:02:31.319 --> 00:02:37.640 Perhaps even stories of rejection and the times that they did actually have to shake off the dust from their garments 00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:42.340 and pronounce judgment on a particular town or a particular group of people. 00:02:43.080 --> 00:02:46.180 Great excitement as they come back, and they begin to report, 00:02:46.420 --> 00:02:50.379 this is what happened as we were out accomplishing the will of Jesus. 00:02:50.379 --> 00:02:56.900 And we see that this pattern of reporting is actually clear in the New Testament. 00:02:57.780 --> 00:02:59.439 It wouldn't only happen in this case. 00:02:59.519 --> 00:03:00.919 It's actually a very natural thing. 00:03:01.019 --> 00:03:04.460 As we get into the later New Testament books in the book of Acts, 00:03:04.519 --> 00:03:08.439 we see the apostle Paul in particular and the other people who ministered with him 00:03:08.439 --> 00:03:12.300 occasionally and periodically circling back around to their home churches. 00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:14.319 And what were they doing? 00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:19.219 They were reporting and resorting, taking time for rest, 00:03:19.739 --> 00:03:22.539 reporting on all the work that God was doing in other places. 00:03:23.479 --> 00:03:24.819 And missionaries do that still today. 00:03:25.539 --> 00:03:29.539 They send letters or maybe videos or maybe they go on furlough assignments 00:03:29.539 --> 00:03:32.719 and they go around to some of the churches to which they've been connected 00:03:32.719 --> 00:03:35.000 to report on this is what God is doing. 00:03:35.099 --> 00:03:38.180 These are the blessings that we have seen as a result of his hand. 00:03:38.259 --> 00:03:40.919 These are the protections that he has given despite 00:10:36.819 these small fishing vessels, 00:10:36.819 --> 00:10:38.699 as they're traveling from town to town, 00:10:38.700 --> 00:10:40.720 maybe perhaps more than anything else, 00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:41.879 just to get off their feet, 00:10:42.140 --> 00:10:44.520 they would follow the shallow shorelines 00:10:44.520 --> 00:10:46.379 of the Sea of Galilee 00:10:46.379 --> 00:10:47.480 or the Lake of Galilee. 00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:49.759 Luke tells us that they were actually 00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:50.860 specifically heading 00:10:50.860 --> 00:10:53.379 toward the area around Bethsaida. 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:55.960 And so Bethsaida is just northeast 00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:58.560 of Capernaum. 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:00.820 And it's reasonable for us to conclude 00:11:00.820 --> 00:11:02.340 based on the movements of Jesus 00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:03.800 and his disciples at this point, 00:11:03.860 --> 00:11:05.600 that where they started 00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:07.820 was 00:12:59.040 would have been just to keep sailing. 00:13:00.160 --> 00:13:01.879 Eventually, they're going to come to a place 00:13:01.879 --> 00:13:03.340 where it would be more difficult at this moment, 00:13:52.519 --> 00:13:54.139 it's the fact that Jesus sees 00:13:54.139 --> 00:13:55.259 all these people on the shore, 00:13:55.379 --> 00:13:56.539 they're looking for him
