or if you read the New York Times article, 00:00:59.539 --> 00:01:04.780 the fact that more kids or more people died in the west and south side of Chicago 00:01:04.780 --> 00:01:07.439 than they did in Highland Park this past week. 00:01:08.519 --> 00:01:15.719 And it's easy to think that the world is getting harder, getting worse. 00:01:16.420 --> 00:01:20.159 We see that there is war in our world that's affecting us. 00:01:20.159 --> 00:01:29.159 We see as well that we live in a culture where the overwhelming tide of cultural patterns 00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:33.359 moves further and further away from living as God called us to. 00:01:34.519 --> 00:01:40.179 And we see in this post-pandemic just a sense of fear and anger 00:01:40.179 --> 00:01:43.079 that grips our society in many ways. 00:01:43.079 --> 00:01:49.079 As the hymn says it, though the wrong seems oft so strong, 00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:55.140 there is a sense of inevitability and a sense of triumphalism about it. 00:01:56.420 --> 00:01:59.200 Many places in the world, there are people who would say, 00:01:59.319 --> 00:02:00.859 we don't need God to win. 00:02:00.859 --> 00:02:06.439 And what is wrong is Isaiah, 00:03:37.139 --> 00:03:40.539 and if you remember in the 7th and 6th centuries in Israel, 00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:43.759 what had happened is the northern kingdom had been conquered by Assyria 00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:45.340 and destroyed. 00:03:46.179 --> 00:03:48.179 The southern kingdom was beleaguered. 00:03:48.539 --> 00:03:54.280 Political football between the superpowers of Assyria and Egypt, 00:03:54.639 --> 00:03:58.759 and then Babylon rose up and defeated Assyria 00:03:58.759 --> 00:04:01.579 and became the other superpower in the time. 00:04:01.659 --> 00:04:05.239 And if you remember, this section of Isaiah 40 through 55, 00:04:05.519 --> 00:04:08.759 Isaiah is writing to the people in the 600s, 00:04:08.759 --> 00:04:11.000 so the 7th century BC, 00:04:11.399 --> 00:04:14.039 but he's looking ahead to the 6th century 00:04:14.039 --> 00:04:16.980 when they would be taken off into exile. 00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:20.159 And he's giving them a word of comfort and hope 00:04:20.159 --> 00:04:25.199 when it certainly seemed like evil had triumphed 00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:27.219 and the world had fallen apart. 00:04:27.220 --> 00:04:32.660 The temple was destroyed, the king was gone, 00:04:32.820 --> 00:04:36.500 and the people had been scattered and were living in exile. 00:04:37.880 --> 00:04:41.720 And it sure felt like the world had gotten as bad as it could be. 00:04:42.700 --> 00:04:45.960 And in that moment, they asked themselves the questions, 00:04:46.540 --> 00:04:47.440 where is God? 00:04:47.580 --> 00:04:49.200 Did we pick the wrong Babylon, 00:07:12.379 --> 00:07:14.539 that God will bring an end to the arrogance 00:07:14.539 --> 00:07:18.479 of a self-reliant world that does not honor God. 00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:21.120 Look with me in the first couple of verses. 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:23.540 Come down and sit in the dust, 00:07:23.980 --> 00:07:25.439 O virgin daughter of Babylon. 00:07:26.019 --> 00:07:28.399 Sit on the ground without a throne, 00:07:28.620 --> 00:07:30.180 O daughter of the Chaldeans, 00:07:30.939 --> 00:07:34.399 for you shall no more be called tender and delicate. 00:07:35.340 --> 00:07:38.579 Take the millstones and grind flowers. 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:40.540 Put off your veil. 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:41.939 Strip off your robe. 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:42.879 Uncover your legs. 00:07:43.040 00:08:01.519 to the nation of Babylon. 00:08:01.899 --> 00:08:03.959 And a lot of what he's doing in this chapter 00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:06.139 is he's uncovering the arrogance 00:08:06.139 --> 00:08:09.420 and the pride of the nation of Babylon. 00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:11.800 So, I'm going to walk through what that looked like 00:08:11.800 --> 00:08:13.060 and then we're going to talk a little bit 00:08:13.060 --> 00:08:14.540 about how God responded to it. 00:08:14.860 --> 00:08:16.819 So, first we see that one of the things 00:08:16.819 --> 00:08:19.019 that Babylon prided themselves on 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:21.199 was their privileged place in the world. 00:08:21.540 --> 00:08:24.040 They were the local superpower during this time. 00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:25.699 And you see some of the words 00:08:25.699 --> 00:08:29.740 that they saw themselves like a pampered princess 00:08:29.740 --> 00:08:31.800 or like a privileged queen. 00:08:32.319 --> 00:08:34.679 That they had all the power that they wanted 00:08:34.679 --> 00:08:36.460 to conquer the nations around them. 00:08:36.679 --> 00:08:39.139 They had all the riches of the things 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:41.480 that they gathered from these conquering nations. 00:08:41.480 --> 00:08:47.480 There's a great opportunity if you ever go to Berlin 00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:49.460 to see the gate of Ishtar 00:08:49.460 --> 00:08:53.700 and the magnificence of the Babylonian empire 00:08:53.700 --> 00:08:54.720 at that time. 00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:58.399 It's a remarkable piece of architecture. 00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:01.259 To see their great power and their greatness. 00:09:01.420 --> 00:09:03.220 And they lived in comfort and security 00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:04.600 and satisfaction. --> 00:09:27.979 We're going to last forever. 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:29.239 We're going to sit on top 00:09:29.239 --> 00:09:31.559 and no one's going to conquer us. 00:09:31.979 --> 00:09:34.799 Not
