difficulties and the harshness and the realities of life. 00:03:16.780 --> 00:03:23.060 Just because Christmas is full of fun and festivities doesn't mean that life is always full of laughter and joy, is it? 00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:28.659 It's kind of like, you might know the story of the World War I Christmas truce. 00:03:29.140 --> 00:03:33.280 What happened is World War I, 1914, Europe goes to war. 00:03:33.920 --> 00:03:39.280 And the German forces and the British forces are bunkered down on the western front. 00:03:39.659 --> 00:03:41.140 They've both dug their trenches. 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:45.000 There's about 200 yards of no man's land between them. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:46.860 There's wire in between. 00:03:47.419 --> 00:03:50.599 And they're both in the trenches with their guns pointing at one another, 00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:54.879 taking aim at anybody that moves across the no man's land. 00:03:55.539 --> 00:04:00.219 And then on the 24th of December, 1914, these soldiers, it's winter. 00:04:00.439 --> 00:04:02.340 They bunker down in their trenches. 00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:09.439 And one of the British soldiers hears a German soldier on the other side singing 00:05:36.860 Ha, ha, ha, ha. 00:05:36.920 --> 00:05:39.879 When life can sometimes not be that easy. 00:05:40.719 --> 00:05:45.099 In our passage of scripture we read this morning, we see such a case of life's difficulties. 00:05:45.100 --> 00:05:51.460 In Isaiah chapter 9, it starts off and it talks about this nation that has experienced gloom and anguish. 00:05:52.200 --> 00:05:53.580 And it says in verse 1, it says, 00:05:54.040 --> 00:06:00.320 In the former time, he, that's God, has brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. 00:06:00.820 --> 00:06:07.040 And so what's going on here is that Zebulun and Naphtali are two provinces in the north of Judah, the north of Israel. 00:06:07.780 --> 00:06:14.560 And what's happened is that these two provinces are sandwiched between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea. 00:06:15.100 --> 00:06:19.680 And around this time, Assyria is exerting its influence, its power. 00:06:20.020 --> 00:06:22.300 There's a new king on the throne, Tiglath-Pileser. 00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:27.240 He wants to extend the Assyrian Empire from Nineveh all the way down to Egypt. 00:06:27.240 --> 00:06:32.820 And so his army is rolling through the Middle East, conquering nation after nation after nation. 00:06:33.340 --> 00:06:41.620 And they come to Israel and the first place that they attack and conquer are these two provinces of Zebulun and Naphtali. 00:06:41.620 --> 00:06:50.540 And so these two provinces are soon going to become under the control of this ruthless foreign army, the Assyrian army. 00:06:51.379 --> 00:06:56.860 Now I'm not sure how many of us have been conquered by invading armies or been taken captive by enemy forces. 00:06:57.280 --> 00:07:03.220 But all of us here have felt the harshness and the reality of the darkness of life crouching in on us. 00:07:03.220 --> 00:07:11.140 All of us know what it likes to feel pain, to feel anxiety coming our way, to suffer with illness and sickness. 00:07:12.180 --> 00:07:16.520 A friend of mine, Bernard here, recently highlighted this song to me. 00:07:16.580 --> 00:07:21.560 Lady Gaga in her movie A Star is Born, she sings this song you need something more? 00:07:31.079 --> 00:07:33.179 Isn't it hard trying to keep it so hardcore? 00:07:33.379 --> 00:07:38.779 Isn't it hard trying to keep up the pretense that you've got life 00:07:46.739 And in the bad times I fear myself. 00:07:47.560 --> 00:07:53.280 What about another Hollywood actor, Ryan Reynolds, a famous actor who's got millions of followers, 00:07:53.400 --> vibes, 00:08:03.300 --> 00:08:08.519 Reynolds is battling the same type of darkness as 40 million adults in the United States. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:12.879 He says, I've always had anxiety, both the light-hearted kind, 00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:18.000 but I've also been to the depth of the darker end of the spectrum, which is not fun at all. 00:08:18.279 --> 00:08:19.439 How's his coping mechanism? 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:20.959 He says, I was partying. 00:08:21.379 --> 00:08:23.860 I tried just to make myself vanish in some kind of way, 00:08:24.360 --> 00:08:29.719 frequently waking up in the middle of the night feeling paralyzed with anxiety about the future. 00:08:30.620 --> 00:08:32.019 Friends, we've all been there, haven't we? 00:08:32.860 --> 00:08:36.000 We've all tasted and felt the overwhelming, encroaching darkness. 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:40.059 Maybe for some of us it's unrealized dreams and expectations we had of ourselves. 00:08:40.059 --> 00:08:43.699 We hope to make some kind of status, some accolade, some achievement. 00:08:44.500 --> 00:08:50.179 And as the years roll on, it seems like that desire, that achievement is further and further away. 00:08:50.899 --> 00:08:53.799 For some of us, maybe it's the expectations that others put on us, 00:08:53.879 --> 00:08:57.779 our parents or our boss or maybe a child, friends or family, 00:08:58.139 --> 00:09:01.839 hoping we'll be somebody and we feel like we can never live up to the expectations. 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:06.259 For some of us it's crying out to be loved, crying out to be accepted, 00:09:07.019 abounds and the future looks bleak. 00:09:44.600 --> 00:09:46.960 Now when we go back and read Isaiah chapter 8, 00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:49.720 what we realize is that the Assyrian army, 00:09:50.159 --> 00:09:51.720 the darkness that they encountered, 00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:55.960 was actually just the consequence of a far deeper darkness that was in their hearts. 00:09:56.580 --> 00:09:57.600 There was something going wrong. 00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:02.460 Israel had been invited to trust God and they said no thanks. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:05.460 They'd been invited to put their hope in the sovereign Lord 00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:07.759 and they decided not to, to trust themselves. 00:10:08.420 --> 00:10:11.700 Israel had been invited to love God and to serve Him. 00:10:12.200 --> 00:10:15.120 And their hearts had been captured by another love. 00:10:16.340 --> 00:10:19.159 And so even though they were very religious and they did all the right things, 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:20.840 they participated in the right actions, 00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:22.680 they went to church and they went to the temple, 00:10:22.679 --> 00:10:28.319 in their heart of hearts, they were actually loving, serving and trusting themselves. 00:10:29.639 --> 00:10:33.159 Friends, this is not just the story of ancient Israel 3,000 years ago. 00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:34.759 This is the story of humanity. 00:10:35.419 --> 00:10:36.779 This is the story of the world. 00:10:37.359 --> 00:10:40.439 This is the story of all of us, from Hong Kong to Vancouver, 00:10:41.019 --> 00:10:42.839 from The people that were once in darkness have seen a great light. 00:12:02.459 --> 00:12:04.620 Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, 00:12:05.019 --> 00:12:06.319 on them a light has shone. 00:12:06.779 --> 00:12:09.899 Here is a nation that the enemy is at the gates, 00:12:10.179 --> 00:12:11.480 and things are not going well, 00:12:11.620 --> 00:12:15.240 and their hearts are consumed with things not going the way they want. 00:12:15.240 --> 00:12:18.960 And yet it's like the clouds of darkness are starting to part away. 00:12:19.220 --> 00:12:21.220 It's like they've been walking 00:12:50.379 --> 00:12:52.100 And it's like a light has come to darkness, 00:12:52.240 --> 00:12:53.120 but more than that, 00:12:53.399 --> 00:12:54.879 it's like a harvest, 00:12:55.139 --> 00:12:58.139 it's like a nation that experiences a bumper harvest. 00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:00.779 And it's like a nation that experiences 00:13:00.779 --> 00:13:02.800 an enemy attacking them,
