rich, he had everything that he needed in life. 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:57.739 And in some ways, perhaps he did. 00:01:58.599 --> 00:02:05.079 But the problem is, like him, we too can think, well, all our answers to all our problems 00:02:05.079 --> 00:02:08.879 is found in being rich, in finding wealth. 00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:13.319 That's what the world strives after so much. 00:02:13.319 --> 00:02:20.019 And you often hear so many people pinning their hopes on winning the lottery. 00:02:20.680 --> 00:02:24.539 And you hear people who win big in the lottery. 00:02:25.259 --> 00:02:31.500 Just a week ago, a man in the UK won 26 million pounds on the Euro millions. 00:02:32.459 --> 00:02:35.479 And you think to yourself, I'm sure there's a little envy in you. 00:02:35.939 --> 00:02:39.699 Oh, what would it be like to have that much money? 00:02:39.699 --> 00:02:43.419 It would answer maybe so many of my problems. 00:02:43.939 --> 00:02:47.280 It would help me in so many ways. 00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:50.579 What you could do with that kind of money. 00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:54.539 But would it answer all your problems? 00:02:55.659 --> 00:02:58.299 You see it time and time again. 00:02:58.839 --> 00:03:03.000 Wealth in whatever amount so often leads to tragedy. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.240 We find it throughout the scriptures. 00:03:06.479 --> 00:03:08.280 You find it in the Gospel of Mark. 00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:13.599 You find it earlier on in this Gospel in chapter 6, where you see King Herod. 00:03:14.580 --> 00:03:16.479 And he had great wealth. 00:03:17.860 --> 00:03:24.139 But he allowed pride and wrong decisions to come between him and knowing Christ. 00:03:24.139 --> 00:03:27.479 And left, as far as we can see, without hope. 00:03:28.359 --> 00:03:35.199 And here in chapter 10, we have these trappings of riches again before us, but in a slightly different way. 00:03:35.879 --> 00:03:42.159 In this chapter, we see a man with a great and an eager desire to meet with Jesus. 00:03:42.899 --> 00:03:45.560 But he too is rich. 00:03:45.560 --> 00:03:49.879 But he comes to Jesus with this question. 00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:58.460 Now, just before we come to look at the man, I want you to see in verse 13 to 16 the contrast that we see there. 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:05.080 Because in verse 13 to 16, we see many people bringing young children to Jesus. 00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:08.560 And the disciples are rebuking them to say, 00:04:08.920 --> 00:04:10.860 Don't trouble the teacher. 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:12.920 Don't trouble Jesus with these children. 00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:17.300 But Jesus rebukes them and says, Let the children come to me. 00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:20.959 Because to them belongs the kingdom of God. 00:04:21.800 --> 00:04:24.360 So there were those who were eager to bring their children to Jesus. 00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:25.740 They were being turned away. 00:04:25.860 --> 00:04:28.539 But Jesus says, Let them come. 00:04:29.560 --> 00:04:32.360 And you find that then, later on, 00:04:34.399 --> 00:04:37.639 in what we're looking at with the rich young man, 00:04:37.639 --> 00:04:45.060 we're told there that you must be like a little child to come into the kingdom of God. 00:04:45.699 --> 00:04:47.899 And so you see a link here. 00:04:48.339 --> 00:04:52.199 And what you find is, as you come into the rich young man account, 00:04:52.719 --> 00:04:56.000 and him coming to Jesus, no one rebukes him. 00:04:56.519 --> 00:04:58.639 No one tells him, You can't come. 00:04:59.740 --> 00:05:00.519 He's rich. 00:05:00.579 --> 00:05:02.539 And maybe they're thinking, Well, if we get this man alongside, 00:05:02.540 --> 00:05:05.720 that might help answer some of our problems. 00:05:06.260 --> 00:05:10.340 We could do so much more if this man shares his wealth with us. 00:05:10.400 --> 00:05:12.800 He's not turned away in any way. 00:05:13.500 --> 00:05:18.379 But he's told, too, that he Jesus, You lack one thing. 00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:20.339 And how easy it is to think that we have everything we need in life. 00:06:20.339 --> 00:06:23.919 How easy it is to feel comfortable. 00:06:24.679 --> 00:06:32.379 Or how easy it is to think that, Well, if only I can find an answer in life through gaining in this world, 00:06:32.779 --> 00:06:34.560 everything will be fine. 00:06:35.739 --> 00:06:39.519 And yet we, too, lack this one thing. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.939 We lack the most important thing when we don't have Jesus. 00:06:44.939 --> 00:06:50.300 And if we 00:08:22.000 Last week, we were looking at Mark chapter 4. 00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:26.279 We saw Jesus with the disciples in the storm, crying out, 00:08:26.279 --> 00:08:28.079 Do you not care that we perish? 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:34.519 And Jesus showing them the power that he had when he's able to speak a word that brings calm. 00:08:35.059 --> 00:08:38.819 And you find that throughout this Gospel, up to this point, 00:08:39.340 --> 00:08:44.679 Jesus encountering with many different people, helping in many different situations. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:52.779 But perhaps this is the point where you come to see a real great earnest desire 00:08:52.779 --> 00:08:57.100 for the things of God when this rich young man comes. 00:08:57.100 --> 00:09:01.300 He comes with these powerful questions. 00:09:02.180 --> 00:09:07.560 And you could almost say that not even his disciples up to this point had had this earnest desire 00:09:07.560 --> 00:09:09.300 that we can see in this Gospel. 00:09:10.180 --> 00:09:15.800 And the question he comes with is a great place to start with Jesus. 00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:21.639 But the important thing isn't how we start with Jesus, 00:09:21.639 --> 00:11:47.159 --> 00:11:50.399 Jesus taught that in the Sermon on the Mount. 00:11:50.519 --> 00:11:55.120 You read in Matthew chapter 6, verse 31, he said, 00:11:55.620 --> 00:11:56.159 Jesus said, 00:11:56.159 --> 00:12:20.819 It's about what is important. 00:12:20.820 --> 00:12:22.820 What is our priority? 00:12:22.820 --> 00:12:28.900 What is it that we're lacking in that sense at the moment? 00:12:29.420 --> 00:12:34.200 The rich young man is seeking after the kingdom of God. 00:12:35.180 --> 00:12:38.040 And in the truest sense of what faith is, 00:12:38.460 --> 00:12:42.320 that is what we are seeking, should be seeking after. 00:12:42.460 --> 00:12:44.640 The kingdom of God. 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:47.199 All that belongs to God. 00:12:47.299 --> 00:12:50.139 All that God is giving saved? 00:15:11.419 --> 00:15:14.019 Now there's a sense that's a good question. 00:15:14.019 --> 00:15:18.120 Because we know, well, we are told to seek the Lord. 00:15:18.199 --> 00:15:19.559 That's something that we are to do. 00:15:20.179 --> 00:15:22.259 But what must I do here? 00:15:22.379 --> 00:15:24.059 There's more to it than that. 00:15:24.120 --> 00:15:27.000 He's thinking, what can I do myself? 00:15:28.360 --> 00:15:30.019 And you see that in how Jesus responds 00:15:30.539 --> 00:15:33.159 when he starts answering about the commandments. 00:15:34.860 --> 00:15:37.379 You can see that Jesus is seeing this man's heart. 00:15:37.480 --> 00:15:38.879 And he's seeing deeper. 00:15:39.259 --> 00:15:41.259 And he knows the thoughts that he's got. 00:15:41.259 --> 00:15:43.899 He's probably been able to do things in his life 00:15:43.899 --> 00:15:46.259 just by his money and his power. 00:15:46.580 --> 00:15:48.439 His wealth gives him so much. 00:15:49.019 --> 00:15:52.439 And so he thinks, I can sort this problem myself. 00:15:54.279 --> 00:15:59.019 But immediately Jesus points him away from that kind of attitude. 00:15:59.179 --> 00:16:01.299 And he points him towards God. 00:16:02.360 --> 00:16:04.080 In verse 18, Jesus said to him, 00:16:04.120 --> 00:16:05.340 Why do you call me good? 00:16:05.439 --> 00:16:08.379 No one is good except God alone. 00:16:08.379 --> 00:16:10.939 And so in his question, 00:16:11.480 --> 00:16:14.919 Jesus is immediately starting to point him away from himself 00:16:14.919 --> 00:16:17.519 and towards God. 00:16:19.059 --> 00:16:21.439 And that's the kind of question 00:16:21.439 --> 00:16:24.120 that we need to have as well. 00:16:24.460 --> 00:16:26.500 To see that what we need is not, 00:16:26.759 --> 00:16:28.000 idol of our own making? 00:17:09.879 --> 00:17:13.240 In Psalm 135 that we sang in verse 15, 00:17:13.799 --> 00:17:17.460 The idols of the nation made of silver and of gold 00:17:17.460 --> 00:17:21.680 are by human hands created with a hammer or a mole. 00:17:21.720 --> 00:17:24.740 We have so many idols, so many gods in this world 00:17:24.740 --> 00:17:26.659 that are of our own making. 00:17:26.660 --> 00:17:32.000 But we have to see that when we're thinking of eternal life 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:33.519 and this burning question, 00:17:34.340 --> 00:17:37.700 the answer is to be found in coming to the source 00:17:37.700 --> 00:17:40.759 and coming to God. 00:17:41.600 --> 00:17:43.060 And so we've got this great question, 00:17:43.160 --> 00:17:46.920 what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:49.220 But then we want to see, secondly, Jesus' answer. 00:17:49.220 --> 00:17:54.120 When Jesus looks at this man, 00:17:55.120 --> 00:17:56.740 he sees something in him. 00:17:56.799 --> 00:17:58.539 It says he loved him. 00:17:59.720 --> 00:18:01.120 There was something about him. 00:18:01.180 --> 00:18:04.920 And so he starts to probe into this man's heart. 00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:08.839 And he uses the word to probe. 00:18:08.920 --> 00:18:10.600 And that's what the word of God does. 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:13.759 It probes deep into our ones that focus on ourselves in one sense. 00:19:06.279 --> 00:19:07.480 Do not do this. 00:19:07.579 --> 00:19:10.120 And the rich young man, it's almost like he has hope. 00:19:10.119 --> 00:19:15.299 He says, all these I have kept from my youth. 00:19:16.379 --> 00:19:18.139 Perfect in this. 00:19:19.219 --> 00:19:22.259 All these laws I have kept, none of them have I broken.
