It used to be 00:00:43.079 --> 00:00:51.200 that our identity came to us from our history and from our family and from our community 00:00:51.200 --> 00:00:57.200 and our commitment from those whom we love. But in a market economy we are now defined 00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:04.200 by a kind of series of consumer choices that we can make. Freedom of choice is a big thing, 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:09.200 isn't it? It was wanted as the kind of great thing at the end of the 20th century, in some 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:14.200 ways more so now, you can choose what you want to be. Choose what gender you are. Choose what 00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:21.200 sexuality you are. But although it has been vaunted as a great thing, it really has become 00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:28.200 a kind of tyranny of defining yourself. So these celebrities spend all their time defining 00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:33.200 themselves again and again and again. I read recently there is a guy called Karl Lagerfelder 00:01:33.200 --> 00:01:40.200 who recently unloaded $30 million of his furniture collection. What have you got $30 million worth 00:01:40.200 --> 00:01:48.200 of furniture for? But he got rid of it in an attempt to redefine himself. The reason I tell 00:01:48.200 --> 00:01:53.200 you that is because one of the reasons that we meet here week by week to worship God is 00:01:53.200 --> 00:02:00.200 because we desperately need to be reminded who we are. And that who we are comes not from 00:02:00.200 --> 00:02:05.200 our financial status. Who you are does not come from whether you are married or not. Who 00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:10.199 you are does not come from whether you own a property or you just rent it. It does not 00:02:10.199 --> 00:02:16.199 come from your education. Your identity does not come from your performance or from your 00:02:16.199 --> 00:02:22.199 success or from your failures, thank goodness. But we remind ourselves week by week that our 00:02:22.199 --> 00:02:29.199 lives are determined by what God has done for us in the Lord Jesus Christ. And we as a 00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:38.199 congregation together and individually are defined not by fashion or furniture or features but 00:02:38.199 --> 00:02:45.199 we are defined by the crucifixion of the Son of God for us. And we read in this section in 00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:52.199 verse 20 this towering statement don't we? Can you see it? I have been crucified with Christ. 00:02:52.199 --> 00:03:11.199 It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. 00:03:11.199 --> 00:03:22.199 What this passage says to us and what we have learnt over these past eight weeks I hope is that the crucifixion is not just an event that took place outside a city wall 2,000 years ago. 00:03:22.199 --> 00:03:37.199 But it is not just a great exchange where God takes our sin and places it on Jesus and we take Jesus' righteousness and it is given to us although the cross wonderfully is that. 00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:44.199 But the cross is a place where we are personally irrevocably changed forever. 00:03:44.199 --> 00:03:53.199 That we ourselves are crucified with Christ so that we now can live to God. That is who we are. 00:03:53.199 --> 00:04:00.199 And I think it is amazing to see how the apostle brings that mighty reality home in verses 11 to 21. 00:04:00.199 --> 00:04:06.199 The apostle Paul presents us with a sharp contrast in how to live. 00:04:06.199 --> 00:04:09.199 And it is a contrast that all of us struggle with. 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:13.199 It is a contrast that each one of us struggle with. 00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:18.199 Whether we live out of fear, that is the first thing, or whether we live out of love. 00:04:18.199 --> 00:04:24.199 And that goes to understand, really, right to the heart of how we understand who we are. 00:04:24.199 --> 00:04:30.199 So verses 11 to 14, firstly, we are not who we are because of fear. 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:34.199 We are not who we are because of fear. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:38.199 Now Cephas, verse 11, this is another name for Peter. 00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:43.199 And the apostle Peter was the most prominent of the early apostles. 00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:48.199 In the church, he was a man who had walked with Jesus Christ. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:55.199 And he had been commissioned to be an apostle after he denied Peter before the young maid. 00:04:56.199 --> 00:05:01.199 And both he and the apostle Paul are the honoured leaders of the early church. 00:05:02.199 --> 00:05:04.199 Both are committed to the same gospel. 00:05:04.199 --> 00:05:09.199 But we read this remarkable story of how the great leader let the side down. 00:05:10.199 --> 00:05:11.199 When it came to the truth. 00:05:12.199 --> 00:05:14.199 Not because he changed his convictions. 00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:19.199 Not because the apostle Peter suddenly realised that he believed a different gospel. 00:05:20.199 --> 00:05:23.199 But because of his fear of a powerful group and what they would think of him. 00:05:24.199 --> 00:05:26.199 And so he played the hypocrite. 00:05:26.199 --> 00:05:30.199 And if you look at verse 11, it is a shocking verse. 00:05:30.199 --> 00:05:35.199 Paul reports a dramatic conflict between him and the apostle Peter. 00:05:36.199 --> 00:05:37.199 It took place in Antioch. 00:05:38.199 --> 00:05:42.199 Which is the first place where Gentiles were converted in great numbers. 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:45.199 And the first place where people were called Christians. 00:05:46.199 --> 00:05:48.199 Peter himself has gone back to Jerusalem. 00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:54.199 And he's explained that now the gospel has gone beyond the borders of the Jewish faith. 00:05:54.199 --> 00:05:58.199 And the Christian gospel is now welcoming Gentile Christians. 00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:02.199 And the Jewish church in Jerusalem, well most of them agreed. 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:06.199 And so they sent him back to Antioch with Barnabas. 00:06:07.199 --> 00:06:08.199 And Barnabas went. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:12.199 And when he saw the size of the work he took Paul with him. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:16.199 And we read at the end of Acts, for a whole year Paul and Barnabas met with the church. 00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:20.199 And they taught a large company of people in Antioch. 00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:23.199 For the first time people were called Christians. 00:06:24.199 --> 00:06:28.199 So when Peter comes up a few months later to Antioch. 00:06:28.199 --> 00:06:31.199 He joins in table fellowship with the Gentiles. 00:06:32.199 --> 00:06:33.199 He eats with them. 00:06:34.199 --> 00:06:35.199 He participates with them. 00:06:36.199 --> 00:06:39.199 He is with them as a demonstration of the gospel. 00:06:40.199 --> 00:06:45.199 It's a demonstration that God accepts all, us all, by faith in Jesus Christ. 00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:47.199 He does not insist that they be circumcised. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:52.199 He does not insist that they abide by the old food laws. 00:06:53.199 --> 00:06:58.199 But an influential group from the head office come to the church. 00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:07.199 A Jewish Christian delegation from Jerusalem are sent by presbytery. 00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:11.199 And they bring with them a two-tier faith system. 00:07:11.199 --> 00:07:14.199 They say it's one thing to have faith in Jesus Christ. 00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:19.199 But if you really want salvation you've got to abide by the law. 00:07:20.199 --> 00:07:22.199 You have got to be circumcised. 00:07:22.199 --> 00:07:25.199 And it's fascinating to see their effect on Peter. 00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:27.199 Look at verse 12. 00:07:28.199 --> 00:07:29.199 The last sentence. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:32.199 When they came. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:34.199 He drew back. 00:07:35.199 --> 00:07:37.199 And he separated himself. 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:40.199 Fearing the circumcision party. 00:07:40.199 --> 00:07:43.199 When they came. 00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:43.199 00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:45.199 Peter drew back and separated himself. 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:46.199 Why? 00:07:46.199 --> 00:07:48.199 Because he feared the circumcision party. 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:52.199 This isn't a decision made in deep conviction. 00:07:53.199 --> 00:07:55.199 It's a decision based on fear. 00:07:56.199 --> 00:08:00.199 On what an important group of people will say of him. 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:02.199 And think of him. 00:08:03.199 --> 00:08:04.199 He doesn't get up and say. 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:06.199 Listen I was wrong about the gospel. 00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:09.199 The death of Jesus is not enough for your salvation. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:10.199 I got it wrong. 00:08:10.199 --> 00:08:13.199 You're going to have to subscribe to the Jewish law. 00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:15.199 You're going to have to get circumcised. 00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:17.199 No. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:18.199 Under pressure from influential people. 00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:20.199 Peter changes. 00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:22.199 Quietly and gradually. 00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:24.199 And unobtrusively. 00:08:24.199 --> 00:08:25.199 He withdraws. 00:08:26.199 --> 00:08:27.199 And I think. 00:08:28.199 --> 00:08:30.199 That this has always been the pressure on God's people. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:34.200 And I think that is the pressure on us. 00:08:36.200 --> 00:08:38.200 The pressure on us is not in the first instance. 00:08:40.200 --> 00:08:41.200 To deny the gospel. 00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:42.200 To deny the gospel. 00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:44.200 The pressure I think in the first instance. 00:08:44.200 --> 00:08:45.200 Is not to practice it. 00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:49.200 And you and I. 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:51.200 Have got people of influence in our lives. 00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:53.200 Who we would get along with a lot better. 00:08:54.200 --> 00:08:56.200 If we were just able to compromise a little. 00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:57.200 They don't mind. 00:08:57.200 --> 00:08:59.200 They don't mind. 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:01.200 What we believe. 00:09:02.200 --> 00:09:04.200 As long as our behavior. 00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:06.200 Doesn't make them feel uncomfortable. 00:09:07.200 --> 00:09:09.200 And when a Christian leader falls into this trap. 00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.200 And he fails to practice the gospel. 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.200 It has a knock on. 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:14.200 A flow on effect. 00:09:14.200 --> 00:09:15.200 Can you see verse 30. 00:09:18.200 --> --> 00:09:34.200 More contagious than hypocrisy. 00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:37.200 We have. 00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:38.200 Every single one of us. 00:09:38.200 --> 00:09:39.200 It doesn't matter. 00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:40.200 Your personality. 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:41.200 Really. 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:42.200 We have a. 00:09:42.200 --> 00:09:43.200 Contagious disease. 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:45.200 A natural desire. 00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:46.200 To please others. 00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:49.200 Some really more so than others. 00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:52.200 And when a powerful pressure group. 00:09:52.200 --> 00:09:53.200 Comes from head office. 00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:55.200 Or comes from an influential place. 00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:56.200 It is very difficult. 00:09:56.200 --> 00:09:57.200 To have the courage of your convictions. 00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:01.200 It's what pressure groups are. 00:10:02.200 --> 00:10:03.200 Are thought groups. 00:10:04.200 --> 00:10:05.200 They want to obscure. 00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:07.200 The truth of the gospel. 00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:09.200 By applying the pressure of approval. 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:11.200 And Peter would never have. 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:13.200 Separated himself from the Gentiles. 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:16.200 If he wasn't looking over his shoulder. 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:18.200 If he wasn't being driven. 00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:20.200 At this time. 00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:21.200 By the need for approval. 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:24.200 By fear of what they thought of him. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:26.200 It's not by conviction. 00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:27.200 Or obedience. 00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:28.200 Or love for God. 00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:30.200 And the apostle Paul. 00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:31.200 00:11:24.200 And have you noticed. 00:11:24.200 --> 00:11:26.200 As you read the epistles of Paul. 00:11:26.200 --> 00:11:28.200 How he dislikes conflict. 00:11:28.200 --> 00:11:31.200 That if you read through the epistles. 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:32.200 You'll see how many times. 00:11:32.200 --> 00:11:33.200 He makes ground. 00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:35.200 And he compromises around the edges. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:36.200 How many times. 00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:38.200 He calls people to unity. 00:11:38.200 --> 00:11:40.200 To maintain the unity. 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:41.200 Of the spirit. 00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:42.200 And the bond of peace. 00:11:42.200 --> 00:11:43.200 And it would have been much easier. 00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:43.200 00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:45.200 Not to publicly 00:12:23.200 And it is supremely important. 00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:24.200 To make a stand. 00:12:24.200 --> 00:12:25.200 Just cast your eyes. 00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:26.200 Back to chapter one.
