he is preaching the Gospel. 00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:44.819 And the events that have led to this occasion are themselves remarkable and arresting. 00:03:45.239 --> 00:03:52.479 Peter is preaching in the home of Cornelius, who is a Roman centurion, a Roman soldier. 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:58.319 The Bible describes him as a devout man who feared God with all his household 00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:02.699 and gave generously to the people and prayed continually to God. 00:04:02.699 --> 00:04:10.579 And we're told that Cornelius had had a vision and God sent through Cornelius for Peter, 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:16.920 who was 40 miles south in a place called Joppa, just because he was going everywhere preaching the Gospel. 00:04:17.079 --> 00:04:24.899 And Peter too had had a remarkable supernatural vision of a sheet coming down from heaven 00:04:24.899 --> 00:04:29.819 with all kinds of animals on it, clean and unclean. 00:04:30.179 --> 00:04:33.659 And Peter was told to rise and kill and eat. 00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:36.599 But he responded instinctively, 00:04:37.279 --> 00:04:41.919 I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean, so I'm not going to do what you're asking. 00:04:43.299 --> 00:04:44.399 And a voice said to him, 00:04:44.579 --> 00:04:49.879 Listen, what God has called clean or made clean, don't call common. 00:04:49.879 --> 00:04:55.180 And it's remarkable, it happened three times and then the vision disappeared. 00:04:56.540 --> 00:05:00.560 And Cornelius, in response to God, has sent men to Joppa for Peter 00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:05.639 and they come and they tell what has happened and Peter is taken then by them up to Joppa. 00:05:05.779 --> 00:05:11.040 And that story is so important in the book of Acts that it's referred to in the following chapter 00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:13.980 and again referred to in chapter 15. 00:05:13.980 --> 00:05:20.700 Because it's all about the enlargement of the Gospel circle. 00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:23.140 That's really the theme of these chapters. 00:05:24.080 --> 00:05:29.900 As we were reminded in baptism, the Gospel came to Abraham and his descendants 00:05:29.900 --> 00:05:37.180 and it was very much identified with the nation that descended from Abraham. 00:05:37.180 --> 00:05:47.259 But it was never God's intention to keep the light of the Gospel within the immediate, ordinary, natural family of Abraham. 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:51.319 Even in the covenant promise that God gave to Abraham, 00:05:52.040 --> 00:05:57.899 there was more than a passing hint that the Gospel would reach to the ends of the earth 00:05:57.899 --> 00:06:00.800 because of God's call of Abraham. 00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:11.639 In fact, as one theologian puts it, the call of Abraham was a particular means for a universal end. 00:06:12.600 --> 00:06:21.060 It was the call of one man, a particular means through whom all the families of the earth would be blessed. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.180 And if you are familiar with the Great Commission, at the close of Matthew's Gospel, 00:06:26.180 --> 00:06:30.519 go into all the world and make disciples of all the nations, 00:06:30.699 --> 00:06:37.060 that is really simply the Christianizing of the Abrahamic promise. 00:06:38.259 --> 00:06:41.639 It is, just to put a spin on words, 00:06:42.259 --> 00:06:47.899 it is the baptizing of the covenant promise in the name of Christ. 00:06:48.340 --> 00:06:52.340 Who is now bringing the covenant promise into its own 00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:55.979 and making that particular means of the 00:07:57.720 --> 00:08:00.519 that the Gospel would be preached in his name beginning at Jerusalem, 00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:04.620 and then in Samaria, and then to the ends of the earth. 00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:10.120 So the Spirit coming down at this point in the Book of Acts, 00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:16.199 in the household of Cornelius, is the marker that now the Gospel is going to be proclaimed all over the world. 00:08:16.340 --> 00:08:20.920 And the purpose of the vision that Peter saw was that these unclean Gentiles 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:25.459 were no longer regarded so in God's scheme
