at verse 23. 00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:14.360 Now, before faith came, we were held captive under the law. 00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:18.240 Imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:25.860 The birth of Jesus Christ makes a difference because before it happened, Paul says, we were held captive. 00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:32.800 Before Jesus arrived, we lived behind bars. 00:03:34.140 --> 00:03:36.020 In an invisible prison. 00:03:37.800 --> 00:03:40.920 With walls and a floor and a ceiling. 00:03:41.100 --> 00:03:44.560 And we couldn't see that prison physically kind of bondage. 00:03:55.300 --> 00:03:56.000 And a restriction. 00:03:56.500 --> 00:04:01.480 He says, we were held captive under the law. 00:04:03.259 --> 00:04:07.920 Let me give you a bit of background on that letter to the Galatians that we're reading today. 00:04:08.060 --> 00:04:09.860 We've jumped in halfway through, haven't we? 00:04:09.900 --> 00:04:11.599 We've kind of jumped in a bit cold, really. 00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:20.079 Paul writes this letter to a group of churches who are a mixture of Jewish converts to Christianity and non-Jews. 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:25.860 And Galatians is one of the most brutal letters that Paul writes to a group of Christians. 00:04:26.219 --> 00:04:27.319 Things are pretty dire. 00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:35.399 Earlier in the letter, he says, you've departed from the true gospel to a different false message. 00:04:35.399 --> 00:04:41.819 And there are some among them who want to distort the good news of Jesus. 00:04:43.039 --> 00:04:46.560 They particularly want to add some Jewish practices. 00:04:47.899 --> 00:04:57.319 They want to keep some Old Testament Bible laws like circumcision and like certain religious Jewish days. 00:04:57.319 --> 00:05:01.899 And that is what Paul means when he talks about the law here. 00:05:03.399 --> 00:05:09.279 But he says to them, why would you want to add those laws onto the wonderful message about Jesus? 00:05:09.560 --> 00:05:11.000 That is bizarre behaviour. 00:05:11.480 --> 00:05:19.439 And one reason for that is that the law was designed not to set you free, but partly as a prison. 00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:27.439 The law was designed and given to you to keep you in a cell. 00:05:28.740 --> 00:05:32.439 He says, verse 23, it held us captive. 00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:44.159 You could use that word captive to describe the kind of time before a person is kind of judged and sentenced in court. 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:50.420 It's like being held in a holding cell in a local police station. 00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:57.040 They're kept in police custody or by the court authorities. 00:05:57.640 --> 00:06:01.560 Kept until a further day when proceedings can go 00:06:29.260 having ceremonial washings, 00:06:29.560 --> 00:06:31.320 wearing certain types of clothing, 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:32.900 not wearing this kind of clothing, 00:06:33.280 --> 00:06:34.900 cutting your hair in a certain way, 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:36.500 not cutting your hair in that way, 00:06:36.860 --> 00:06:39.540 eating certain foods, not eating those foods, 00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:41.400 and on and on and on. 00:06:41.399 --> 00:06:47.039 There was so much that you had to do as an Old Testament Jew. 00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:50.599 And part of, not all of it, 00:06:50.659 --> 00:06:54.199 but part of the design of the law, Paul says, 00:06:54.299 --> 00:06:57.779 was to make you realise that you are trapped. 00:06:59.679 --> 00:07:01.599 Clean your house in a certain
