taken the time to reflect on how these words hit the men 00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:27.640 that were seated around the table that night with Jesus. 00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:30.839 It's the night of Jesus' betrayal. 00:02:31.579 --> 00:02:33.899 The Passover meal has just been served. 00:02:34.659 --> 00:02:37.319 The bread and the cup passed around. 00:02:38.239 --> 00:02:40.019 Judas has already left the building. 00:02:41.059 --> 00:02:45.859 And Jesus is giving his last words to his disciples before his arrest and execution. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:51.799 There's been kind of an ominous tone to this night so far. 00:02:52.799 --> 00:02:55.299 Jesus has been quite troubled, we heard earlier. 00:02:55.300 --> 00:02:58.680 He's been speaking about his betrayal. 00:02:59.900 --> 00:03:05.580 He's been hinting at his death through this symbolic gesture with bread and with cup. 00:03:07.340 --> 00:03:14.020 And just now he has told them right before this, which we heard last week or a week before, 00:03:14.220 --> 00:03:18.600 he will be with them only a little while longer. 00:03:19.220 --> 00:03:22.640 He's about to go somewhere that they cannot follow him. 00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:30.500 So I want you to imagine this morning that you are one of the disciples seated around the table with Jesus this night, 00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:32.679 seeing and hearing these things. anxious, 00:04:14.199 --> 00:04:18.819 having no clear picture about how things were going to unfold, 00:04:19.019 --> 00:04:20.159 what was coming next. 00:04:21.779 --> 00:04:23.899 And usually when trouble arose, 00:04:25.180 --> 00:04:27.560 Jesus was their emotional rock. 00:04:29.199 --> 00:04:33.339 I think about that time when there was a storm out on the Sea of Galilee 00:04:33.339 --> 00:04:35.459 and Jesus was sleeping in the boat. 00:04:35.459 --> 00:04:42.339 That was kind of a picture of how Jesus often was in the midst of trouble with his disciples. 00:04:43.299 --> 00:04:44.279 He was calm. 00:04:44.459 --> 00:04:45.120 He was cool. 00:04:45.579 --> 00:04:46.459 He was collected. 00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:51.799 Seemingly unbothered by the threats and the plots of the religious leaders. 00:04:52.839 --> 00:04:54.560 As fearless as a man can be. 00:04:55.560 --> 00:04:57.560 And he was always encouraging them. 00:04:57.560 --> 00:05:01.959 But now even Jesus seems deeply troubled. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.259 So if I'm sitting at the table with Jesus 00:05:06.259 --> 00:05:09.220 and he's troubled, 00:05:09.720 --> 00:05:12.879 I'm starting to feel a
