00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:13.280 It's a verb in the active voice. 00:08:13.860 --> 00:08:17.379 The Philistines gathered their armies together to battle. 00:08:18.259 --> 00:08:22.079 Organized, powerful, confident, commanding, advancing. 00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:26.859 We're given a detail of the location at Sokoth. 00:08:27.779 --> 00:08:30.740 What are the words that come next after that city in verse 1? 00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:33.759 Which belongs to Judah. 00:08:35.019 --> 00:08:42.579 This description reminds us that the Philistines had invaded the land that God secured for his so now the two sides mount for war. 00:08:56.659 --> 00:09:01.659 Along this ridgeline at the top of the hill was a major road which the Philistines now controlled. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:06.580 Giving them control over whatever would enter or leave Israel. 00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:11.860 We read in verse 2 that Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together. 00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:15.019 Here that same verb is given in the passive voice. 00:09:15.740 --> 00:09:17.340 It's something being done to them. 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:21.680 They encamped at the valley of Elah. 00:09:22.200 --> 00:09:25.980 They drew up in battle array against the Philistines. 00:09:27.500 --> 00:09:31.300 We're told that each part of the army, each side had a mountain. 00:09:31.660 --> 00:09:33.740 And in between them was this valley. 00:09:34.860 --> 00:09:39.280 And this valley is where the border will be redefined. 00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:46.439 If the Philistines win this battle, they have now free reign to invade the whole kingdom of God's people. 00:09:47.879 --> 00:09:51.159 The Philistines also owned the metal industry. 00:09:51.639 --> 00:09:56.000 They had a complete monopoly on the blacksmith trade. 00:09:56.659 --> 00:10:01.559 They secured through metal and weapons that they brought a military dominance. 00:10:01.559 --> 00:10:04.839 You can flip back to see that and remember 00:10:12.079 We read, 00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:34.540 The only two men in all of Israel that had weapons, you'll remember, were Saul the king and Jonathan the crowned prince. 00:10:34.539 --> 00:10:42.079 They had the most advanced military weapon of the day, which were ironclad chariots. 00:10:43.259 --> 00:10:47.939 And with chariots covered in metal, no one could stop the advance of the Philistines. 00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:53.779 We read that they were gathered for an attack with the Philistines coming up from the south, 00:10:54.959 --> 00:10:58.120 the Israelites on the northern side in the land of Judah. 00:10:58.120 --> 00:11:04.820 As someone pointed out, the future of their nation, all is going to be determined by this one battle. 00:11:05.860 --> 00:11:11.159 And if ever a lion from the tribe of Judah was needed, it was now at this moment. 00:11:12.440 --> 00:11:17.100 On verse 3, we read that the Philistines stood on a mountain on one side 00:11:17.100 --> 00:11:21.919 and Israel stood on a mountain on the other with a valley in between them. 00:11:21.919 --> 00:11:34.500 In between them was a ravine, an east-west wadi is the name in Israel. 00:11:34.959 --> 00:11:36.279 And it's like a dry creek. 00:11:36.839 --> 00:11:42.159 It's a tear in the soil that makes it impossible for chariots to roll across. 00:11:42.899 --> 00:11:47.559 And so this was most likely one of the reasons we now have a cold war, a standoff. 00:11:47.559 --> 00:11:54.879 Both sides are in battle array, waiting for the moment now when the first arrow will be shot across this valley. 00:11:57.859 --> 00:12:05.379 Israel had been given this land by God, been drawn out of slavery to possess it, to live in it, 00:12:05.439 --> 00:12:10.919 and to be ruled in this land by God as a gift of his grace to them, his people. 00:12:11.599 --> 00:12:17.279 But as we can see in the mindset of the Israelites, most still lived as slaves to the world. 00:12:17.559 --> 00:12:24.719 We're told that this valley is called the Valley of Elah, literally oak. 00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:30.719 So it's a big tree down in the middle of this valley with a ravine cutting through it. 00:12:31.839 --> 00:12:34.259 The oak tree is a long-living tree. 00:12:34.619 --> 00:12:40.819 Most likely this one grew very tall so that it could be a landmark, a point of reference for everyone traveling through. 00:12:40.820 --> 00:12:47.980 So here, on the standoff between two armies, with one big central tree in the middle, 00:12:48.740 --> 00:12:52.060 heaven and hell will have a standoff. 00:12:53.940 --> 00:12:58.220 This long-lasting tree will be what this battle is remembered by. 00:12:58.220 --> 00:13:04.360 Here is where the battle will be fought, and here the war will be decided. 00:13:06.139 --> 00:13:09.500 Well, we too were born into slavery to sin. 00:13:10.620 --> 00:13:14.000 We're born into this world in bondage. 00:13:14.700 --> 00:13:17.879 But our Lord Jesus Christ entered the domain of darkness. 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:23.919 Jesus Christ secured our citizenship in the kingdom of heaven. 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:30.700 In Colossians 1.13, we read that God rescued us who are in Christ from the dominion of darkness 00:13:30.700 --> 00:13:34.700 and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:40.120 And like Israel preparing for this great battle, our fate also was determined. 00:13:40.120 --> 00:13:46.460 That one moment in time, that long-standing tree, the cross of our Savior Jesus. 00:13:47.779 --> 00:13:52.019 Though we're still in this world, we are not of this world. 00:13:52.759 --> 00:13:55.320 We are in God's kingdom of grace. 00:13:56.840 --> 00:14:01.639 And by his power, by his strength, these borders of his kingdom are to be protected. 00:14:02.379 --> 00:14:08.000 The enemy is not to creep in, not to invade the borders of the kingdom of God 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.639 in our hearts, in our families, and in our church. 00:14:11.500 --> 00:14:13.399 That's the setting of the battle. 00:14:14.360 --> 00:14:17.139 Number two, what about the enemy's champion? 00:14:18.620 --> 00:14:19.799 The enemy's champion. 00:14:21.340 --> 00:14:26.559 Goliath stands as the tormentor, the accuser of God's people. 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:33.120 Goliath is the figurehead of the domain of hell and darkness in the world. 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:39.060 He's the one who is the weaponizer of sin and death. 00:14:40.100 --> 00:14:46.139 And we're given a very detailed description that's meant to strike fear in us, beginning in verse 4. 00:14:47.500 --> 00:14:54.360 We read that a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines named Goliath from Gath. 00:14:55.440 --> 00:15:02.259 Gath was the city of the Philistines, one of the five powerful cities just on the other side of the border from Israel. 00:15:02.259 --> 00:15:06.179 So this battle was taking place in Goliath's backyard. 00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:11.240 We're told that his height was six cubits and a span. 00:15:13.620 --> 00:15:18.580 Most estimate that Goliath would have stood at nine feet, nine inches tall. 00:15:18.919 --> 00:15:24.980 So children, that's three inches, just that much shorter than a 10-foot basketball hoop. 00:15:25.460 --> 00:15:30.439 So it works really well for us to have our service today in a gym because we can see that. 00:15:30.440 --> 00:15:38.680 And I was trying to visualize somewhere toward the bottom of the net is where the nose of this great warrior would be if he's nine foot nine. 00:15:39.420 --> 00:15:46.160 Can you imagine the body of a giant filling in from that point of height all the way down? 00:15:47.440 --> 00:15:48.920 That's how tall he was. 00:15:48.919 --> 00:15:57.599 Gath was a strategic border city and it's meeting the world, meeting Judah. 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:01.379 This would have been David's backyard as well. 00:16:02.120 --> 00:16:07.899 And this is the tribe of Judah that had not sent as many soldiers to go fight in Saul's war in the previous chapter. 00:16:07.899 --> 00:16:13.179 Now, their own fields, their own livelihood is directly under attack. 00:16:14.939 --> 00:16:23.039 Archaeological excavations of Gath near this same valley, the Valley of the Tree today, found extensive fortifications. 00:16:23.799 --> 00:16:28.319 And they found an iron production facility in this same land. 00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:41.700 And so here comes the champion from the Philistine side. 00:16:42.780 --> 00:16:49.560 By his words, we can tell that the Philistines, through him their mouthpiece, despise God the creator. 00:16:49.559 --> 00:16:54.659 These are rebellious people that are mocking God's people. 00:16:55.819 --> 00:16:59.879 And yet we see the reaction of the Israelites is that they are impressed. 00:17:00.099 --> 00:17:00.979 They are stunned. 00:17:01.099 --> 00:17:05.179 You could even say they're attracted to that worldly way of war. 00:17:06.200 --> 00:17:15.940 The word champion that's given in verse four, it literally means a man between or a man in the middle of two sides. 00:17:15.940 --> 00:17:22.360 A warrior who's going to go between the two armies and represent his entire nation. 00:17:22.980 --> 00:17:29.440 One soldier who's going to go fight a single combat as a stand-in for the entire army. 00:17:30.440 --> 00:17:35.000 This is how nations of the world showcase their power. 00:17:35.519 --> 00:17:39.220 And it goes back well before what we're familiar with. 00:17:39.640 --> 00:17:42.259 You think of how the Philistines were called the Sea People. 00:17:42.259 --> 00:17:48.859 And historians' best conclusion is that the Philistines were originally from the islands of Greece 00:17:48.859 --> 00:17:52.299 until they got on their ships, these seafaring people, 00:17:52.539 --> 00:17:57.240 and they left to go to Egypt and then to Judea or to the land of Israel. 00:17:57.920 --> 00:18:02.299 So I looked up what century was it that the Philistines began sending, you know, 00:18:02.359 --> 00:18:05.640 their own men off of these Greek islands to other parts of the world. 00:18:05.819 --> 00:18:08.519 And it was the 12th century before Christ. 00:18:08.519 --> 00:18:10.960 So then I looked it up. 00:18:11.119 --> 00:18:15.259 When was, you know, Homer's setting, the Iliad and the Odyssey, 00:18:15.400 --> 00:18:17.019 what were the setting of that? 00:18:17.059 --> 00:18:19.539 And it was the 12th century before Christ. 00:18:20.059 --> 00:18:24.740 In other words, if you're familiar with this Greek legends and stories 00:18:24.740 --> 00:18:27.339 of how these great warriors would be sent out, 00:18:27.740 --> 00:18:32.700 like Achilles, to represent an entire nation, an entire kingdom, 00:18:32.700 --> 00:18:35.360 this would be like an early gladiatorial game. 00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:38.880 You get to watch the best of the best from each side go head to head. 00:18:39.460 --> 00:18:41.120 And then from then the battle continues, 00:18:41.220 --> 00:18:44.640 like the battle between the Greeks and the Trojans. 00:18:45.340 --> than the vast multitude dying right away, 00:18:58.259 --> 00:18:59.480 and then we see who wins, 00:18:59.660 --> 00:19:02.880 let's send out a token representation. 00:19:03.660 --> 00:19:05.400 Because most likely, however that goes, 00:19:05.440 --> 00:19:07.559 is how the rest of the battle is going to go. 00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:10.220 And as Goliath taunts Israel, 00:19:10.339 --> 00:19:12.740 the losing nation has much at stake. 00:19:13.120 --> 00:19:17.900 The whole nation will now become slaves of the winning nation. 00:19:17.900 --> 00:19:22.640 The victorious champion
