00:03:17.639 And there are times when even forgetfulness can be devastating. 00:03:21.519 --> 00:03:24.759 For example, when an aging parent or an aging spouse 00:03:24.759 --> 00:03:27.099 begins to slide into dementia, 00:03:28.099 --> 00:03:31.000 forgetting the faces of even their closest loved ones. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:31.500 Forgetfulness. 00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:34.360 Forgetfulness. 00:03:36.039 --> 00:03:38.159 Now, we might not realize it at first, 00:03:38.479 --> 00:03:43.120 but forgetfulness is actually one of the greatest dangers 00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:44.879 that we face spiritually. 00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:48.340 You know, for most of us, 00:03:48.379 --> 00:03:52.900 it won't be a massive theological heresy or false teaching 00:03:52.900 --> 00:03:56.280 that undermines our relationship with God and with one another. 00:03:57.719 --> 00:03:58.759 For most of us, 00:03:58.759 --> 00:04:02.479 it won't be some sort of big overt temptation to immorality 00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:03.719 that shipwrecks our faith. 00:04:05.240 --> 00:04:06.960 No, actually, the much more pervasive 00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:09.800 and greater and widespread danger is 00:04:32.480 did you catch why Peter said 00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:35.759 our growth in grace tends to break down 00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:37.519 as he lists all those qualities 00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:40.219 with which the life of Christ begins to work itself out within us? 00:04:40.979 --> 00:04:43.419 What is it that makes us ineffectual and unfruitful 00:04:43.419 --> 00:04:44.959 in our 12 and 13, 00:05:20.659 --> 00:05:22.819 I want us to think about three things. 00:05:23.879 --> 00:05:24.619 What to remember, 00:05:25.539 --> 00:05:26.599 how to remember, 00:05:27.059 --> 00:05:27.699 and lastly, 00:05:27.959 --> 00:05:29.179 why to remember. 00:05:29.319 --> 00:05:31.000 Why it's so important that we remember. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:34.100 So why don't we think first about 00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:35.420 what we need to remember. 00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:36.279 Now, 00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:37.519 at this point, 00:05:37.699 --> 00:05:38.899 in the story of Exodus, 00:05:39.959 --> 00:05:42.579 the Israelites had just witnessed 00:05:42.579 --> 00:05:45.500 God perform perhaps the most significant 00:05:45.500 --> 00:05:48.100 redemptive event in the entire Old Testament. 00:05:49.240 --> 00:05:51.180 The tenth plague has just fallen 00:05:51.180 --> 00:05:52.680 on the Egyptian firstborn sons. 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:54.839 The blood of the Passover lamb 00:05:54.839 --> 00:05:56.720 has kept the Israelites safe. 00:05:57.500 --> 00:05:59.839 Pharaoh's obstinance against the Lord 00:05:59.839 --> 00:06:00.919 has finally been broken. 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:02.939 He releases the people from slavery 00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:05.839 and they have now left Egypt 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:07.159 once and for all. 00:06:07.779 --> 00:06:08.359 At last, 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:10.379 after 400 years of slavery, 00:06:10.719 --> 00:06:11.919 the people are free. 00:06:12.379 --> 00:06:13.359 God has saved them. 00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:14.519 He's redeemed them. 00:06:14.579 --> 00:06:15.500 He's liberated them. 00:06:15.560 --> 00:06:17.079 They're no longer slaves of Pharaoh. 00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:19.120 They belong to the Lord now 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:20.939 and they are free. 00:06:22.519 --> 00:06:23.439 That's where we're at 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:24.239 in the story of Exodus. 00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:25.519 And now, 00:06:25.660 --> 00:06:26.759 Moses says to the Israelites, 00:06:27.280 --> 00:06:28.220 as they're going out, 00:06:29.280 --> 00:06:31.639 remember this day. 00:06:34.040 --> 00:06:35.900 But here's the surprising thing 00:06:35.900 --> 00:06:38.040 about what happens in Exodus 12 and 13. 00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:41.139 This command to remember 00:06:41.139 --> 00:06:43.840 doesn't just come after their redemption. 00:06:44.379 --> 00:06:45.259 This command to remember 00:06:45.259 --> 00:06:47.400 becomes before their redemption as well. 00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:50.620 If you glance back at Exodus chapter 12, 00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:53.100 God doesn't just tell Moses 00:06:53.100 --> 00:06:54.300 what's going to happen 00:06:54.300 --> 00:06:55.740 on the night of the last plague. 00:06:56.060 --> 00:06:57.579 And God doesn't just tell Moses 00:06:57.579 --> 00:06:58.680 how the Israelites 00:06:58.680 --> 00:06:59.860 are going to be kept safe 00:06:59.860 --> 00:07:00.379 from the plague 00:07:00.379 --> 00:07:01.699 through the sacrifice of a lamb. 00:07:02.620 --> 00:07:03.280 That's sort of the verse, 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:04.899 that's the first sort of 13 verses 00:07:04.899 --> 00:07:05.819 of chapter 12. 00:07:06.180 --> 00:07:07.379 God even tells Moses 00:07:07.379 --> 00:07:10.180 how they're going to remember this event 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:11.280 throughout their generations. 00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:13.379 Before the event of the Passover in Egypt 00:07:13.379 --> 00:07:14.280 even happens, 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:15.800 before the redemption even occurs, 00:07:16.259 --> 00:07:17.000 God tells Moses, 00:07:17.399 --> 00:07:19.899 here's how you're going to remember this forever. 00:07:20.620 --> 00:07:23.060 And you see that in verses 14 slavery. 00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:15.059 Passover was the liberation, 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:16.759 celebration of Israel, 00:09:17.079 --> 00:09:18.959 that they were God's freed people. 00:09:20.699 --> 00:09:21.739 Again and again, 00:09:21.819 --> 00:09:22.899 they remembered how God 00:09:22.899 --> 00:09:24.479 had liberated them from slavery 00:09:24.479 --> 00:09:26.419 and had saved them 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:28.399 through the blood of a lamb. 00:09:30.199 --> 00:09:30.939 And now, 00:09:31.379 --> 00:09:33.279 Jesus was telling his disciples 00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:36.679 that it had all been about him. 00:09:36.679 --> 00:09:40.199 that he was the true lamb 00:09:40.199 --> 00:09:40.799 who would die, 00:09:41.500 --> 00:09:43.919 that his blood would set us free 00:09:43.919 00:11:12.360 was crucified by the Romans 00:11:12.360 --> 00:11:13.319 outside of Jerusalem. 00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:15.539 Pretty uncontested event. 00:11:17.860 --> 00:11:19.679 But what lens do you use 00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:20.539 to see that event? 00:11:23.319 --> 00:11:24.620 Was he just a martyr 00:11:24.620 --> 00:11:26.019 dying for a good cause? 00:11:27.439 --> 00:11:28.960 Was he a political 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:29.700 revolutionary 00:11:29.700 --> 00:11:30.840 meeting his demise? 00:11:34.180 --> 00:11:35.700 But how did Jesus himself 00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:36.820 see his impending death? 00:11:37.500 --> 00:11:39.420 What lens did he use? 00:11:40.879 --> 00:11:42.560 It was the Passover lens. 00:11:44.840 --> 00:11:46.160 That his death 00:11:46.160 --> 00:11:47.879 is what would allow 00:11:47.879 --> 00:11:50.120 the just judgment of God 00:11:50.120 --> 00:11:51.980 to pass over his people 00:11:51.980 --> 00:11:53.500 and keep them safe. 00:11:53.500 -->
