He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. He said to him 00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:56.099 a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? I wonder this morning whether or not you are struck by the 00:03:34.300 --> 00:03:47.260 way in which John ends his gospel. It's really different from the way that Matthew, Mark, Luke, 00:03:47.580 --> 00:03:56.980 end theirs. It is different from the way in which Acts concludes. It is different from the way in 00:03:56.980 --> 00:04:06.620 which the pastoral epistles conclude. And conclusions are important because they tell us important things 00:04:06.620 --> 00:04:11.660 against the backdrop of the teaching that we have found in the Word of God. 00:04:11.659 --> 00:04:19.839 I want you to stop with me just for a moment and think over the broad scope of the book of John. 00:04:19.959 --> 00:04:23.500 Beginning in John chapter 1, we are reminded, 00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:28.819 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory. 00:04:30.939 --> 00:04:37.079 John opens up with the declaration of the supremacy and the significance of Christ, 00:04:37.079 --> 00:04:43.479 and draws our hearts to recognize that the one this book is going to focus on is the Lord of glory, 00:04:43.479 --> 00:04:48.539 the creator of the universe, and the one who has come to be the Lamb of God. 00:04:51.800 --> 00:04:53.740 And we work our way through the book. 00:04:54.959 --> 00:05:01.240 John actually taking very little time to explain to us some of the particulars and 00:05:01.240 --> 00:05:06.579 the historical events that made up the years of Christ's public ministry, 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:08.280 actually picking up on only seven. 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:17.379 The flow is focused predominantly upon who the Lord Jesus Christ is as the Son of God. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:20.960 And if you were listening in pastor's prayer, 00:05:21.420 --> 00:05:25.660 you heard him reference the fact that these things are written, 00:05:25.660 --> 00:05:30.240 that you might know that Jesus is the Christ, 00:05:30.840 --> 00:05:36.000 you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, 00:06:48.359 --> 00:06:53.219 the Son of God, and by believing, you may have life in his name. 00:06:55.639 --> 00:07:00.759 Question, what does that life involve? 00:07:03.079 --> 00:07:07.019 What does that life in Christ involve? 00:07:07.019 --> 00:07:11.439 And what we're going to find in the passage, I believe, 00:07:11.740 --> 00:07:17.879 is a very clear indication of what life in Christ really comes down to. 00:07:19.719 --> 00:07:24.359 Last week, Pastor, as he was preaching in John chapter 21, 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:27.060 the first portion of John chapter 21, 00:07:27.180 --> 00:07:30.279 he kind of reminded us of the reality of the fact that 00:07:30.279 --> 00:07:32.659 when we are living in Christ, 00:07:32.660 --> 00:07:34.720 we are living a life of productivity 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:39.260 by daily dependence on his instruction and his counsel. 00:07:39.400 --> 00:07:42.720 Hey, throw your net on the right side of the boat. 00:07:42.820 --> 00:07:45.120 We can spend a lot of energy 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:50.720 in a frustrating and ineffective way of living 00:07:50.720 --> 00:07:52.940 when we're relying upon our own wisdom 00:07:52.940 --> 00:07:56.760 rather than relying upon the leading and the instruction of Christ. 00:07:56.759 --> 00:08:03.560 So last week, hey, when you live your life in Christ, 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:05.079 you live it productively 00:08:05.079 --> 00:08:07.639 when you are allowing the Word of God 00:08:07.639 --> 00:08:10.879 and the Word of Christ to minister, instruct, 00:08:11.079 --> 00:08:13.039 and govern the way in which you live. 00:08:15.099 --> 00:08:18.699 This morning, we are going to see that living the life in Christ 00:08:18.699 --> 00:08:20.219 will lead us to service, 00:08:21.219 --> 00:08:22.980 to sacrifice, 00:08:23.879 --> 00:08:24.980 and to submission. 00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:30.740 You look there in John chapter 21, verse 15, 00:08:30.899 --> 00:08:34.740 and mark the repetition of the things that we find here. 00:08:34.899 --> 00:08:36.919 We want to draw attention 00:08:36.919 --> 00:08:39.299 without getting into all the nuanced details 00:08:39.299 --> 00:08:42.620 because the overarching issue is the matter of what we do 00:08:42.620 --> 00:08:44.480 when we are living in Christ. 00:08:44.700 --> Bible scholars go back and forth 00:09:08.420 --> 00:09:10.560 about what these refers to, 00:09:10.660 --> 00:09:12.660 and I think that it refers predominantly 00:09:12.660 --> 00:09:14.700 to the issues of things that are around there, 00:09:14.840 --> 00:09:16.259 the boat and the life 00:09:16.259 --> 00:09:19.100 and other things that Peter had for a moment 00:09:19.100 --> 00:09:20.000 really enjoyed. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:23.659 What Jesus is reminding Peter of 00:09:23.659 --> 00:09:24.860 is the reality of this 00:09:24.860 --> 00:09:26.580 is that our faith brings us 00:09:26.580 --> 00:09:28.059 into a very personal 00:09:28.059 --> 00:09:31.559 and relational bond 00:09:31.559 --> 00:09:32.379 with the Savior 00:09:32.379 --> 00:09:34.259 that is the Lord of our lives. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:38.480 And when Jesus asked him this question, 00:09:38.679 --> 00:09:40.720 I cannot help but imagine 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:42.899 that when Peter heard this question, Do you love me? 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:01.120 I do think it's appropriate for us 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:03.039 to recognize that faith in Christ 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:04.059 brings us, 00:10:04.500 --> 00:10:05.539 not just brings Peter 00:10:05.539 --> 00:10:06.759 or brought Peter, 00:10:07.019 --> 00:10:07.840 but brings us 00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:09.299 into a very personal 00:10:09.299 --> 00:10:10.460 and loving relationship 00:10:10.460 --> 00:10:11.700 with the Lord Jesus. 00:10:11.879 --> 00:10:12.960 And so it's a fair question 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:14.939 for you to ask
