00:08:03.480 You bear the sword to do the king's bidding. 00:08:04.420 --> 00:08:07.500 Jonathan is the prince, the crown prince. 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:09.939 This is a direct threat now for him having the throne. 00:08:10.540 --> 00:08:13.759 And all of Saul's servants get the same command. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:19.939 But we keep reading that Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted greatly in David. 00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:26.159 He didn't delight greatly in Saul or in the throne or in his own prospects of becoming the king. 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:30.920 He delighted in this humble one that God had clearly anointed. 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:33.439 And with whom was the spirit of God. 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:37.080 So Jonathan warned him in verse 5. 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:40.300 This is to --> 00:10:02.620 Look at verse 8. 00:10:03.639 --> 00:10:06.080 David was the one that went out. 00:10:06.539 --> 00:10:07.759 He led the armies to war. 00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:09.139 He fought with the Philistines. 00:10:09.139 --> 00:10:13.679 He struck the Philistines, the enemies of the nation, with a mighty blow. 00:10:14.379 --> 00:10:21.019 And the enemies of the nation of Israel, God's people, they fled from David, leading the army. 00:10:21.819 --> 00:10:23.679 Pay attention to the end of that verse. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:25.199 They fled from David. 00:10:25.319 --> 00:10:25.840 Verse 8. 00:10:27.199 --> 00:10:30.299 The true enemies of God are fleeing from him. 00:10:30.299 --> 00:10:38.439 But what we see in the rest of the story is David now having to flee from Saul. 00:10:39.159 --> 00:10:44.059 It's that same language used now of the coming king being on the run. 00:10:44.859 --> 00:10:50.479 And the reason for this is because in Saul's own words, he viewed David as his enemy. 00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:54.659 You see how messed up the kingdom is under Saul. 00:10:56.019 --> 00:10:58.259 The servant of the Lord, he views as an enemy. 00:10:59.580 --> 00:11:03.320 He swears by God's name and on the other hand breaks the very thing he swore. 00:11:03.320 --> 00:11:06.879 And he's confusing the whole nation. 00:11:07.040 --> 00:11:08.700 He's misallocating the resources. 00:11:09.420 --> 00:11:13.240 He's causing infighting and turmoil within the kingdom. 00:11:14.360 --> 00:11:19.340 When the true enemies are left out there for someone else to go fight. 00:11:19.340 --> 00:11:24.720 So we read in verse 10, David then fled and escaped. 00:11:26.259 --> 00:11:31.300 And then in verse 11, Saul sent messengers to chase him down even after he escaped the first time. 00:11:32.940 --> 00:11:34.019 This king is relentless. 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:40.080 He will stop at nothing to kill what threatens his power and his idol. 00:11:42.120 --> 00:11:44.000 An old hymn puts it this way. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:51.960 And I relate this pattern of so as goes the king, so goes the kingdom all the way back to the fall of Adam in the garden. 00:11:53.159 --> 00:11:56.419 All mankind said the old hymn fell in Adam's fall. 00:11:57.340 --> 00:11:59.820 One common sin affects us all. 00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:06.820 From sire to son, the bane descends and over all the curse impends. 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:11.360 So as a king of the nation, Saul is like a second Adam. 00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:17.539 And his actions are bringing trouble for all God's people under his rule. 00:12:19.560 --> 00:12:22.259 The church has always been met with trouble. 00:12:22.580 --> 00:12:24.080 And many times it's from within. 00:12:24.680 --> 00:12:27.240 And within those who claim to belong to God's kingdom. 00:12:28.440 --> 00:12:34.039 This hymn that I just read from was written in German by a man named Lazarus Spengler. 00:12:35.899 --> 00:12:38.539 He was a contemporary of Martin Luther. 00:12:38.539 --> 00:12:42.000 He lived at the same time as Martin Luther and the Reformation studied under him. 00:12:44.120 --> 00:12:53.399 And he, along with Martin Luther, were both excommunicated from the Holy Roman Catholic Church at the time of the Reformation in the year 1521. 00:12:54.519 --> 00:12:56.219 And this hymn he wrote three years later. 00:12:56.799 --> 00:12:58.379 He saw the effects of the curse. 00:12:58.379 --> 00:13:04.779 And he saw this still needing to be cleaned up within those claiming to be the kingdom of God now in the church. 00:13:06.279 --> 00:13:09.139 Curses flow from the old king. 00:13:10.700 --> 00:13:12.159 The second point is this. 00:13:12.360 --> 00:13:15.039 Blessings flow through the new king. 00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:21.919 Blessings are already starting to flow to God's people through David, the anointed one, the coming king. 00:13:24.179 --> 00:13:29.279 I want to show you one more time like we've done before with the way that this narrative is put together. 00:13:29.860 --> 00:13:31.419 There's corresponding vocabulary. 00:13:31.719 --> 00:13:36.120 And even as I was reading these first 18 verses, you're probably hearing these words repeat themselves. 00:13:36.120 --> 00:13:44.080 And it's hard, isn't it, to put our finger on it and analyze it and figure out how are we supposed to make sense of this passage as one unit? 00:13:44.720 --> 00:13:46.659 What is the author trying to emphasize? 00:13:48.100 --> 00:13:51.039 You know, these people, we can view them as ancient, primitive. 00:13:51.740 --> 00:13:59.519 Remember, just last chapter, they did a post-mortem surgery on 200 Philistine soldiers and presented that to King Saul. 00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:03.039 But these people are just as intelligent. 00:14:03.220 --> 00:14:04.220 They're God's image bearers. 00:14:04.740 --> 00:14:14.220 And the human author, I think it's most likely Samuel at this point, is using masterful Hebrew narrative writing to draw our attention to his main point. 00:14:14.579 --> 00:14:18.939 And not to mention the Holy Spirit superintending the writing of this narrative. 00:14:18.940 --> 00:14:29.940 So what I believe it's all pointing to gives us insight into the blessings that will flow through David, even in the messiness of Israel under Saul. 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:32.980 Three steps here I would like to walk you through. 00:14:33.060 --> 00:14:34.020 The first one is this. 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:35.920 Put one finger on verse one. 00:14:36.620 --> 00:14:38.680 I'm going to try to show you corresponding language. 00:14:39.240 --> 00:14:41.800 In verse one, Saul spoke to Jonathan, his son. 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:47.840 And he's telling, then Jonathan now goes to tell David, Saul wants to kill you. 00:14:47.840 --> 00:14:51.780 So the corresponding language is Saul speaking to one of his children. 00:14:52.200 --> 00:14:53.720 The message, he's going to kill you. 00:14:54.340 --> 00:15:03.120 Now, if you skip down with your other finger to verse 17, Saul says to Michal, his daughter, and she goes around and tells her dad a lie. 00:15:03.220 --> 00:15:05.960 He says, David said, why should I kill you? 00:15:06.500 --> 00:15:08.720 So Saul speaking to a child, kill you. 00:15:09.280 --> 00:15:10.100 will side with the new king. 00:16:51.839 --> 00:17:01.179 When there's a change in regime, especially in the old world, the new regime that comes in tries to kill off all the seed of the old. 00:18:24.459 --> 00:18:26.939 Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted greatly in David. 00:18:27.679 --> 00:18:29.659 Now look down at verse 28 for Michal. 00:18:29.660 --> 00:18:35.600 Saul saw Saul and knew that the Lord was with David and that Michal, his daughter, loved him. 00:18:36.060 --> 00:18:39.700 So both of them were made to love this new king that was coming. 00:18:40.420 --> 00:18:43.560 Both back victorious. 00:31:13.940 --> 00:31:15.660 This points to Jesus Christ. 00:31:16.620 --> 00:31:17.160 He went out. 00:31:17.840 --> 00:31:20.240 He fought against sin and Satan and death and hell.
