this movie Memento essentially hinges on Leonard investigating his own identity. 00:00:31.660 --> 00:00:38.260 He's trying to figure out who he is, he's trying to piece together the story of who he --> 00:03:17.419 They use a lot of words and they don't really say anything. 00:03:18.439 --> 00:03:19.840 Mark is the exact opposite. 00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:21.879 He uses very few words. 00:03:21.879 --> 00:03:26.759 And yet he packs an enormous amount into these few words. 00:03:26.900 --> 00:03:29.620 This short passage packs a serious punch. 00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:34.639 Verse 10, Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River. 00:03:34.639 --> 00:03:44.879 And it says in verse 10, when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:51.119 Now, we've read that passage a million times, some of us, and we just go right on past it. 00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:56.199 But it's worth stopping and asking, why would Mark describe the Spirit in this way? 00:03:56.199 --> 00:04:00.579 What's the origin of the description of the Holy Spirit being like a dove? 00:04:02.579 --> 00:04:12.879 Well, it turns out, Mark is deliberately pointing us to the one other place where the Holy Spirit is described as a dove. 00:04:12.879 --> 00:04:24.339 In the Targums, these are translations of the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic, which was the language that everybody in Jesus' day, including Jesus, spoke. 00:04:24.339 --> 00:04:32.319 So it's a translation of the Hebrew Bible into the lingua franca, the common tongue that Jesus and his disciples spoke. 00:04:32.319 --> 00:04:38.939 And if you go to the creation account in the Targums, Genesis chapter 1, it would say this. hovering really means something like fluttering in the Hebrew. 00:04:57.899 --> 00:05:00.699 It's meant to convey the image of a kind of bird. 00:05:00.699 --> 00:05:12.459 And so the rabbis, when they would translate this into Aramaic, for the sake of clarity, they would say the Spirit of God was fluttering over the face of the waters like a dove. 00:05:13.620 --> 00:05:15.899 So it comes from the Targums. 00:05:16.680 --> 00:05:25.779 And so what we see here is that Mark is deliberately pointing us back to the creation story that they would have been familiar with in the Aramaic. 00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:54.040 He's saying this. 00:05:54.820 --> 00:06:10.980 Just as the Spirit once hovered over the waters at creation, so now that same Spirit once again hovers over the waters of baptism and over the Word of God, the Son of God. 00:06:10.980 --> 00:06:21.860 What Mark is telling us is that this baptism of Jesus, the coming of Jesus, heralds a new creation event. 00:06:22.759 00:07:09.079 They will become the nation of Israel. 00:07:09.299 --> 00:07:15.279 And then God intends to use them as a means to bring his blessing and salvation to the ends of the earth. 00:07:15.279 --> 00:07:22.899 Even though the Israelites emerge in captivity in Egypt, God sets them free. 00:07:23.539 --> 00:07:26.000 This wondrous Exodus event. 00:07:26.219 --> 00:07:28.639 And then God sends them into the wilderness on a journey. 00:07:29.179 --> 00:07:38.459 Now that journey should have taken them through the waters of the Jordan River into the promised land where they would there fulfill God's plan. 00:07:38.459 --> 00:07:48.659 But Israel ends up wandering in the wilderness for 40 years where they face temptation. 00:07:49.439 --> 00:07:50.639 And they fail. 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:55.639 Instead of being a blessing to the nations, they become like the nations. 00:07:56.459 --> 00:08:00.819 Instead of worshiping God, they worship the idols of the nations. 00:08:02.479 --> 00:08:04.259 Now look what Mark tells us. 00:08:04.259 --> 00:08:10.240 When Jesus is baptized, he's not just baptized anywhere. 00:08:11.159 --> 00:08:13.399 He's baptized in the Jordan River. 00:08:14.039 --> 00:08:16.939 He's passing through the waters of the Jordan River. 00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:18.779 And then where does he go? 00:08:18.860 --> 00:08:20.839 He is driven by the Holy Spirit. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:23.279 Driven conveys a sense of urgency. 00:08:23.800 --> 00:08:28.079 It's very urgent that right then and there the next thing he does is to go into the wilderness. 00:08:29.219 --> 00:08:30.420 And what happens in the wilderness? 00:08:30.420 --> 00:08:33.879 He spends 40 days being tempted by Satan. 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:44.039 And yet, where Adam failed, where Eve failed, where Israel failed, Jesus is victorious. 00:08:45.259 --> 00:08:54.819 So in these few verses, Mark is summarizing the entire Old Testament and he's revealing the true identity of Jesus. 00:08:54.820 --> 00:09:03.980 Mark is telling us that Jesus is the one through whom God plans to recreate and renew this world. 00:09:04.400 --> 00:09:07.060 That Jesus is the true and better Adam. 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:10.160 That Jesus is the true and better Israel. 00:09:10.540 --> 00:09:13.820 That Jesus is able to do what they failed to do. 00:09:14.580 --> 00:09:18.580 And that all of God's promises are fulfilled in him. 00:09:18.580 --> 00:09:24.639 This is the true identity of Jesus according to the gospel writers. 00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:29.400 And this is the message that Mark wants to convey in just a few verses. 00:09:29.399 --> 00:09:40.980 So when people say that Jesus was just a really great teacher, a source of inspiration for the Western imagination, 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:46.259 a social reformer who paved the way for future social reformers. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:53.299 When people say that and they believe that's all Jesus represents, they are missing the whole point. 00:09:53.299 --> 00:09:58.639 Jesus did not come to tell us how to live a perfect life. 00:09:59.259 --> 00:10:02.859 There's plenty of people out there who will tell you how to do that. 00:10:03.819 --> 00:10:07.879 Jesus came to live a perfect life himself. 00:10:09.419 --> 00:10:13.740 And that's very important because with every other religious founder, religious leader, 00:10:13.979 --> 00:10:19.179 you have to separate their teaching from their lifestyle in certain ways. 00:10:19.179 --> 00:10:24.120 There are certain truths about their life that people wish were not there. 00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:32.459 They may have had great things to say, but they're also very flawed and in some cases did atrocious things. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:37.699 You see this in other religions, people like Joseph Smith or the prophet Muhammad. 00:10:37.899 --> 00:10:44.459 You see murder and rape and enslavement and genocide and things that people really wish weren't true. 00:10:44.899 --> 00:10:47.179 You see this in the Christian church as well. 00:10:47.179 --> 00:10:52.839 If you look at the history of some of the popes throughout the centuries, they were notoriously evil. 00:10:53.659 --> 00:10:58.879 Some of my greatest theological heroes said and did horrible things. 00:10:59.819 --> 00:11:05.739 Martin Luther, the great theologian of the Protestant Reformation, said awful things about the Jews. 00:11:06.939 --> 00:11:12.379 Jonathan Edwards, regarded as one of the most brilliant theologians in the history of our country, 00:11:12.379 --> 00:11:15.159 if not the world, owned slaves. 00:11:15.159 --> 00:11:23.539 And in all these cases, you focus on the teaching, but not so much the lifestyle. 00:11:24.620 --> 00:11:29.419 And you kind of have to tolerate the lifestyle as best you can, 00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:34.159 so that you can mine the great ideas that come from these leaders. 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:39.819 In all these cases, 00:12:08.720 --> 00:12:13.700 And the best they could come up with was to say that the miracles Jesus performed 00:12:13.700 --> 00:12:18.000 must have been attributed to Satan and not to God. 00:13:18.019 --> 00:13:21.079 no skeletons in his closet, no sins to confess, 00:13:21.359 --> 00:13:24.299 why would such a person need to get baptized? 00:13:25.479 --> 00:13:26.579 Doesn't make sense. 00:13:26.580 --> 00:13:33.020 We find the answer a few chapters later in Mark's gospel, in Mark chapter 10, 00:13:33.680 --> 00:13:35.300 where Jesus says to his disciples, 00:13:35.520 --> 00:13:39.320 the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, 00:13:39.879 --> 00:13:44.420 and to give his life as a ransom for many. 00:13:45.540 --> 00:13:49.879 This is the moment when Jesus reveals his true purpose in coming, 00:13:50.139 --> 00:13:52.920 and the reason that he lived a perfect life. 00:13:52.919 --> 00:13:56.979 It is so that he could offer himself as a ransom, 00:13:56.979 --> 00:14:00.099 so that he could take the place of sinners 00:14:00.099 --> 00:14:03.519 and take the punishment they deserve onto himself. 00:14:05.139 --> 00:14:09.659 This is saying that Jesus came to live the life that we should have lived, 00:14:10.199 --> 00:14:13.579 and then to die the death that we deserve to die, 00:14:14.099 --> 00:14:17.199 in order to set us free and to reconcile us to God. 00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:20.000 So we come back to that question, 00:14:20.100 --> 00:14:21.879 well, why did Jesus get baptized? 00:14:22.980 --> 00:14:27.720 Well, in Jesus' baptism, he identifies himself with sinners. 00:14:28.759 --> 00:14:32.220 He stands in the place of sinners. 00:14:32.640 --> 00:14:35.180 And this is where identity comes into play. 00:14:35.580 -->
