It was kind of near Athens. 00:01:38.979 --> 00:01:40.899 And it was a city of pleasure. 00:01:41.259 --> 00:01:42.299 It was wild. 00:01:42.439 --> 00:01:45.119 It had a reputation for that. 00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:48.420 And Paul, he had set up this as the Apostle Paul. 00:01:48.520 --> 00:01:49.579 He set up lots of churches. 00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:51.939 And this was one of them in Corinth. 00:01:52.859 --> 00:01:55.800 But there was this problem of there was these false teachers. 00:01:56.560 --> 00:02:00.040 And they were teaching that it was all about what you show on the actually speak very well. 00:02:13.180 --> 00:02:14.719 He wasn't a great orator. 00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:21.360 And they were saying, Paul isn't good enough to have authority over you, to teach you, character of this new covenant ministry that the church in Corinth is to be a part of. 00:05:08.539 --> 00:05:14.179 And to help us think about that, this is a definition that someone has put about what reconciliation is. 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:16.920 It's not really a word that we use in everyday language. 00:05:17.620 --> 00:05:27.860 But Christian reconciliation is the work of God through Christ by which he restores mankind to a favorable relationship with himself. 00:05:31.480 --> 00:05:36.340 It is mending that relationship between God and man. 00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:39.240 And that is what Paul is talking about this morning. 00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:42.160 So we're going to look at it in three ways. 00:05:42.259 --> 00:05:43.460 We're going to see Paul's motive. 00:05:44.420 --> stuck into the motive. 00:06:40.760 --> 00:06:45.920 Paul here in the first few verses, he lays out his motivation behind this ministry. 00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:51.500 In the light of the knowledge of the judgment seat of Christ that we finished on last week, 00:06:52.780 --> 00:06:54.939 Paul says, since, in verse 11, 00:06:55.100 --> 00:07:00.560 since then we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. 00:07:01.939 --> 00:07:03.220 And this could mean two things. 00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:07.939 Paul is defending his character to these false prophets, to those in the church. 00:07:08.500 --> 00:07:10.720 He is saying that I do have true faith. 00:07:10.840 --> 00:07:12.800 I fear the Lord. 00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:15.700 Paul has that saving knowledge. 00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.379 That reverent obedience, that devotion, that awe of God. 00:07:20.500 --> 00:07:23.280 That is what it means to fear the Lord. 00:07:25.080 --> 00:07:30.500 You know, Paul is also motivated to persuade others of the truth of these things. 00:07:30.939 --> 00:07:34.840 Those that do not know these things for themselves. 00:07:36.500 --> 00:07:38.600 Paul, why is he defending his things if no one's going to listen to him anyway. 00:07:55.699 --> 00:08:03.779 How often do we see politicians, you know, high up politicians in all levels of government or famous people, society, resign, don't they? 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:16.899 Why do they resign? 00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:19.039 Well, no one trusts them anymore. 00:08:19.719 --> 00:08:21.000 No one's going to listen to them. 00:08:21.319 --> 00:08:22.579 No one's going to do what they say. 00:08:22.579 --> 00:08:30.979 That's a little bit like here that Paul needs to defend himself first to show that he is truly who he God. 00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:44.179 God knows the truth of who we are. 00:08:44.179 --> 00:08:50.019 No matter what others say about us, God knows who you are this morning. 00:08:50.019 --> 00:09:00.840 And in contrast to Paul's true faith, he challenges those who take pride in what is seen, as it says in verse 12. 00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:05.259 These are the false prophets who are just
