Malachi is full of questions, isn't he? 00:00:29.899 --> 00:00:34.920 I don't know whether you noticed that as you've read through the book. There are question marks everywhere. 00:00:35.339 --> 00:00:39.140 You can almost tell the character of the book by the punctuation. 00:00:40.420 --> 00:00:42.399 Again and again, the people are asking questions. 00:00:44.379 --> 00:00:49.359 You have not loved, where have you loved us, they say to God, when God says I've loved you. 00:00:50.259 --> 00:00:56.000 In the passage that was read, how have we robbed you? How can we return to you? 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:00.619 There's 26 questions in the book of Malachi. 00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:05.540 They are asking questions of God and God is asking questions of them. 00:01:06.400 --> 00:01:08.219 Their questions were one of doubt. 00:01:10.680 --> 00:01:14.819 It was also an age of carelessness and casualness. 00:01:14.819 --> 00:01:22.939 The people of God, they found themselves, when it came to sacrifices, when it came to gathering with the people of God, 00:01:23.739 --> 00:01:29.500 they looked for a lame animal and they looked for a blemish offering, something that was on offer. 00:01:30.639 --> 00:01:33.780 The principle was really simple but actually very frightening. 00:01:35.099 --> 00:01:37.000 It was that anything will do for God. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.180 That's really what they were saying. 00:01:40.359 --> 00:01:42.140 Anything will do for God. 00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:44.760 God is lucky to have us turning up. 00:01:46.500 --> 00:01:51.299 The third thing was, it was a stage of infidelity and instability. 00:01:53.079 --> 00:01:58.560 In their family lives and in their human relationships, lots of them just didn't last. 00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:05.379 They gave themselves to someone really quickly but they grew tired very quickly. 00:02:06.740 --> 00:02:10.240 How they treated each other with unfaithfulness was how they were treating God. 00:02:12.360 --> 00:02:15.840 It was one of the great characteristics of that generation. 00:02:17.539 --> 00:02:20.719 Amongst God's people, there are these three characteristics. 00:02:22.219 --> 00:02:24.300 Their arrogance in questioning God. 00:02:24.379 --> 00:02:25.699 How have we robbed you? 00:02:25.699 --> 00:02:31.699 You can almost see their chin in the air held high in defiance. 00:02:32.679 --> 00:02:35.979 Secondly, shabby sacrifices presented to God. 00:02:36.379 --> 00:02:39.519 And thirdly, a shallow commitment to God. 00:02:41.219 --> 00:02:42.780 Nothing went deep with these people. 00:02:44.919 --> 00:02:47.419 And God is pleading with Israel. 00:02:48.539 --> 00:02:52.500 And he's pleading with these people and he's warning them about their lives. 00:02:52.500 --> 00:02:54.780 That they are in a really critical condition. 00:02:55.699 --> 00:03:00.859 But the great tragedy was they didn't understand that. 00:03:02.659 --> 00:03:06.079 They were willfully blind to the truth. 00:03:07.839 --> 00:03:10.399 They refused to see the truth about themselves. 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:14.639 And so God comes again and again and again to them. 00:03:14.759 --> 00:03:18.259 And he gives them opportunity to repent, to change, to turn. 00:03:18.259 --> 00:03:22.519 And so you find that in our passage, don't you? 00:03:22.799 --> 00:03:27.060 Where God says, return to me, in verse 7. 00:03:28.579 --> 00:03:29.219 Return to me. 00:03:29.299 --> 00:03:30.859 It's been the message of the book, clearly. 00:03:33.859 --> 00:03:34.680 Return to me. 00:03:35.359 --> 00:03:38.459 But Malachi is preaching to a people that refuse to listen to him. 00:03:38.460 --> 00:03:49.860 Daniel Defoe wrote, Robert C. Crusoe, he's got this line in it of a people who are not ashamed to sin, but too ashamed to repent. 00:03:51.319 --> 00:03:55.140 Not ashamed to sin, but too ashamed to repent. 00:03:55.620 --> 00:03:57.000 That's the people of Malachi's day. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:03.000 And in the passage that was read to us from verse 6 to 12, there are three scenarios. 00:04:03.860 --> 00:04:08.680 And again, the focus is on God and his relationship with his people. 00:04:10.460 --> 00:04:17.480 And so, first of all, we see, don't we, in verse 6, a changeless God and an unchanging people. 00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:25.700 And let me explain what I mean. 00:04:25.759 --> 00:04:27.700 Look at the first half of verse 6. 00:04:29.319 --> 00:04:32.620 For I, the Lord, do not change. 00:04:34.220 --> 00:04:40.960 God is simply proclaiming to his people and he's declaring this glorious truth, 00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:47.159 which is, in many ways, the basis on which we as believers live and pray. 00:04:49.639 --> 00:04:51.599 It's that God is different to us. 00:04:51.739 --> 00:04:52.939 He is unchanging. 00:04:54.939 --> 00:04:55.859 Six words. 00:04:57.099 --> 00:05:01.939 I, the Lord, do not change. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:05.399 Six life-changing words. 00:05:06.759 --> 00:05:07.959 That's the message of the Bible. 00:05:07.959 --> 00:05:13.739 It is one of the essential elements of the character of God. 00:05:13.939 --> 00:05:15.539 I, the Lord, do not change. 00:05:15.779 --> 00:05:18.339 So, from generation to generation, he is the same. 00:05:20.539 --> 00:05:22.959 His love every morning is steadfast. 00:05:23.599 --> 00:05:25.539 It doesn't go and disappear with the morning mist. 00:05:27.060 --> 00:05:29.719 His mercies, they are new every morning. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:35.039 Greater to your faithfulness, they say to God, because God is unchanging. 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:40.240 He is, as James reminds us, he's the father of lights, early on in their Christian life, 00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:02.539 about the character of God, 00:06:02.680 --> 00:06:04.719 that his love does not change. 00:06:06.019 --> 00:06:08.000 Even though my love for him changes a lot. 00:06:09.620 --> 00:06:10.979 That unlike human love, 00:06:11.099 --> 00:06:14.939 God's love is not a response to what he finds in me. 00:06:14.939 --> 00:06:18.379 He is like a steadfast rock. 00:06:18.379 --> 00:06:22.259 A rock of ages that never changes. 00:06:23.839 --> 00:06:25.759 And the fact that God does not change 00:06:25.759 --> 00:06:28.420 is the foundation of everything in our Christian living. 00:06:29.560 --> 00:06:31.860 He is an anchor for our souls. 00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:33.560 He is a rock to stand on. 00:06:35.860 --> 00:06:37.600 But notice the second half of the verse. 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:38.500 Verse 6. 00:06:38.500 --> 00:06:46.740 Jacob was a great schemer. 00:06:47.879 --> 00:06:49.040 I'm not consumed. 00:06:50.779 --> 00:06:52.740 Because you, God, are unchanging, 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:53.959 we're not destroyed. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:58.000 You see, his love to them, his mercy, 00:06:58.199 --> 00:07:00.139 his patience with them is unchanging. 00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:04.360 No matter how long they go on refusing 00:07:04.360 --> 00:07:06.639 and refusing to return to the Lord, 00:07:06.680 --> 00:07:08.579 he stretches out his hands in mercy. 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:10.779 Now, you can understand it in that way, 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:12.539 but I think actually the context is 00:07:12.539 --> 00:07:15.099 there's a greater depth to it than that. 00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:19.500 There's another way of translating this. 00:07:19.620 --> 00:07:20.779 There's another way of seeing it. 00:08:58.240 that is a really serious thing in a Christian's life. 00:08:58.240 --> 00:09:02.919 And the eternal God comes to us this morning 00:09:02.919 --> 00:09:06.039 over whom he has wept and broken his heart 00:09:06.039 --> 00:09:08.060 and yearned and longed for. 00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:12.960 Over whom he shed mountains of love in Jesus Christ, 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:14.180 and yet he God is grieved, distressed, 00:10:19.139 --> 00:10:20.259 in his heart about them, 00:10:20.360 --> 00:10:21.379 and they did not know it. 00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:24.899 They heard God's voice speaking to them, 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:25.860 and they wondered, 00:10:26.079 --> 00:10:27.480 what are you going on about? 00:10:29.240 --> 00:10:30.579 What is all the fuss over? 00:10:32.459 -->
