Testament in many places, but nowhere more than in the book of Matthew. 00:05:53.939 --> 00:05:57.120 16 times is David mentioned in the book of Matthew. 00:05:57.339 --> 00:05:59.480 More than anywhere else in the New Testament. 00:05:59.480 --> 00:06:05.080 I know we're just jumping into this book as part of our theme and series. 00:06:05.580 --> 00:06:09.560 But what you need to know about the book of Matthew, it's one of the four gospels. 00:06:09.980 --> 00:06:12.900 Every gospel has a different audience and a different purpose. 00:06:13.800 --> 00:06:16.759 During the Middle depicted as an ox, which is the head among the bovines. 00:06:36.019 --> 00:06:39.879 And it was the sacrificial system that was focused in Luke. 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:43.559 So in Luke, we get detailed accounts of how perfect Christ is 00:06:43.559 --> 00:06:47.739 as the final sacrifice to do away with the blood of animals. 00:06:49.039 --> 00:06:51.879 In the Gospel of Mark, it's the shortest. 00:06:51.879 --> 00:06:53.759 It's very fast-paced. 00:06:54.420 --> 00:06:57.699 And the word immediately is always used to show the fast pace. 00:06:57.920 --> 00:06:59.680 It's like a galloping lion. 00:07:00.300 --> 00:07:04.439 And that's the image associated with the Gospel of Mark, is a lion. 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:06.879 Well, what about Matthew? 00:07:08.659 --> 00:07:11.899 And the image for Matthew is a man from heaven, 00:07:12.420 --> 00:07:14.800 or a messenger that's divine. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:17.879 It's been depicted like an angel, 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.639 showing the heavenliness of this messenger, 00:07:19.639 --> 00:07:21.500 but the face is the face of a man. 00:07:22.459 --> 00:07:23.259 Do you see the point? 00:07:24.419 --> 00:07:28.899 Jesus Christ, God Himself, became a man. 00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:30.360 Not just any man. 00:07:30.419 --> 00:07:32.979 He became the man that was promised in the covenant, 00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:35.719 associated with the name of David. 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:41.960 All authority has been given to me, Jesus says. 00:07:42.460 --> 00:07:44.640 Earlier in the book of Matthew, Matthew 8, 9, 00:07:45.380 --> 00:07:49.120 a centurion from the Roman Empire had used that exact same word. 00:07:49.540 --> 00:07:50.320 And he told Jesus, 00:07:50.600 --> 00:07:52.500 I am a man under authority. 00:07:53.180 --> 00:07:56.060 In other words, the power that I have, 00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:57.460 the might of my army, 00:07:57.900 --> 00:08:01.140 it's only as far as it's been given to me by Caesar himself. 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:03.080 I'm a man under authority. 00:08:03.079 --> 00:08:05.879 But with that authority, the centurion said, 00:08:06.279 --> 00:08:08.639 the soldiers under me will do whatever I command. 00:08:08.719 --> 00:08:09.759 If I say go, they go. 00:08:10.659 --> 00:08:12.839 That's the same word Jesus uses to say, 00:08:13.159 --> 00:08:15.800 all authority has been given to Him. 00:08:18.279 --> 00:08:18.899 Authority. 00:08:19.379 --> 00:08:22.319 It's the might, the strength, the force, 00:08:22.839 --> 00:08:26.120 the jurisdiction, the magistrate of Jesus. 00:08:26.599 --> 00:08:29.240 It's the rule that He has over His government. 00:08:29.240 --> 00:08:32.060 It's the right and power of Him 00:08:32.060 --> 00:08:35.379 whose will and commands must be submitted to 00:08:35.379 --> 00:08:36.960 and obeyed by others. 00:08:37.539 --> 00:08:39.519 Just like the centurion in the Roman army. 00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:42.320 That's the type of authority Jesus is claiming. 00:08:43.700 --> 00:08:46.320 I want to walk through four ways 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:49.379 that this authority is given to Jesus. 00:08:49.560 --> 00:08:51.620 First, He is the King. 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:53.220 And He has all the authority 00:08:53.220 --> 00:08:55.960 promised to this royal Davidic line 00:08:55.960 --> 00:08:57.879 from within national Israel. 00:08:57.879 --> 00:09:01.460 He is now the risen, glorified man. 00:09:02.200 --> 00:09:03.919 And as He ascends into heaven, 00:09:04.139 --> 00:09:04.960 in the same passage, 00:09:05.159 --> 00:09:07.220 He's raising up, blessing His disciples, 00:09:07.759 --> 00:09:08.960 promising the Holy Spirit. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:11.820 He is now lifted up 00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:13.820 to show that He's the one fulfilling 00:09:13.820 --> 00:09:15.700 all of those forever promises 00:09:15.700 --> 00:09:18.259 of a throne that will last and never end 00:09:18.259 --> 00:09:20.980 and will endure for every generation to come. 00:09:21.919 --> 00:09:23.500 Would you turn in your book of Matthew? 00:09:23.500 --> 00:09:24.919 I want to walk through several ways 00:09:24.919 --> 00:09:26.799 that David is associated with 00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:28.000 what Christ fulfills. 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:29.620 Turn back to Matthew chapter 1. 00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:34.099 In the introduction to each of the four Gospels, 00:09:34.179 --> 00:09:35.279 there's a different focus. 00:09:35.699 --> 00:09:37.740 What is the focus in the book of Matthew? 00:09:37.860 --> 00:09:39.939 Matthew chapter 1, verse 1. 00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:44.399 Well, He tells us very clearly. 00:09:44.500 --> 00:09:44.860 He says, 00:09:44.959 --> 00:09:48.779 this is the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. 00:09:48.779 --> 00:09:52.439 So He's interested in the exact bloodline of Jesus. 00:09:53.220 --> 00:09:54.959 And notice how Jesus is described. 00:09:55.159 --> 00:09:58.519 Jesus Christ, the son of David. 00:09:59.579 --> 00:10:02.019 So He comes from this royal line of David. 00:10:02.519 --> 00:10:04.139 King Jesus also has authority 00:10:04.139 --> 00:10:06.139 as God's conquering warrior. 00:10:06.139 --> 00:10:09.559 He is coming on His mission on earth 00:10:09.559 --> 00:10:11.259 to drive back Satan 00:10:11.259 --> 00:10:13.799 and to undo the curse of sin. 00:10:14.220 --> 00:10:15.620 Turn next to Matthew 9. 00:10:15.740 --> 00:10:17.120 Just a few pages forward. 00:10:17.500 --> 00:10:19.399 Matthew 9, verse 27. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:25.960 We read of two blind men 00:10:25.960 --> 00:10:27.179 that start to follow Jesus 00:10:27.179 --> 00:10:28.399 as He's on this mission 00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:30.439 pushing back the power of Satan 00:10:30.439 --> 00:10:31.259 and of darkness. 00:10:32.340 --> 00:10:34.100 And these men, like many others, 00:10:34.100 --> 00:10:36.220 they cry out to Jesus 00:10:36.220 --> 00:10:37.600 and look 00:11:00.160 and cried out to Jesus saying, 00:11:00.160 --> 00:11:03.519 Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David. 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:06.980 My daughter is severely demon-possessed. 00:11:08.040 --> 00:11:09.399 She's calling on the authority 00:11:09.399 --> 00:11:10.560 that Jesus has, 00:11:11.100 --> 00:11:13.740 as the royal king from the line of David 00:11:13.740 --> 00:11:15.340 who's conquering and advancing 00:11:15.340 --> 00:11:16.279 the kingdom of heaven 00:11:16.279 --> 00:11:18.759 and pushing back the powers of darkness. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:21.279 Number three, 00:11:21.399 --> 00:11:23.080 King Jesus has all the authority 00:11:23.080 --> 00:11:25.759 of the long-expected Messiah. 00:11:26.420 --> 00:11:28.200 Messiah means anointed one. 00:11:29.560 --> 00:11:31.300 David was anointed by Samuel 00:11:31.299 --> 00:11:33.419 and the king was to always be anointed, 00:11:33.599 --> 00:11:35.679 receiving this power from God 00:11:35.679 --> 00:11:37.199 to rule over God's people. 00:11:37.939 --> 00:11:40.039 Now look at Matthew 21, verse 9. 00:11:41.019 --> 00:11:42.599 The long-expected Messiah, 00:11:42.740 --> 00:11:43.579 the anointed one. 00:11:44.219 --> 00:11:46.479 Matthew 21, verse 9. 00:11:46.480 --> 00:12:01.920 Then the multitudes who went before 00:12:01.920 --> 00:12:04.139 and those who followed cried out, 00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:07.620 saying, Hosanna to the Son of David. 00:12:08.659 --> 00:12:11.300 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:12:11.620 --> 00:12:13.300 Hosanna in the highest. 00:12:13.299 --> 00:12:15.979 This is what the crowds cry out, 00:12:16.099 --> 00:12:19.000 recognizing this is the anointed Messiah, 00:12:19.359 --> 00:12:20.199 the promised one, 00:12:20.479 --> 00:12:21.399 the Son of David. 00:12:21.859 --> 00:12:22.839 But look at the reaction 00:12:22.839 --> 00:12:25.599 of those ruling in power in verse 15. 00:12:26.099 --> 00:12:27.559 When the chief priests and scribes 00:12:27.559 --> 00:12:30.099 saw the wonderful things that Jesus did 00:12:30.099 --> 00:12:32.500 and the children crying out in the temple, 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:35.179 saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, 00:12:35.399 --> 00:12:36.459 they were indignant. 00:12:36.460 --> 00:12:40.759 Jesus came and his own recognized him 00:12:40.759 --> 00:12:42.460 as the promised Messiah, 00:12:42.759 --> 00:12:44.820 the long-expected anointed one. 00:12:45.620 --> 00:12:46.160 And fourth, 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:50.860 King Jesus has all authority as God. 00:12:52.019 --> 00:12:53.940 He has the authority of God himself 00:12:53.940 --> 00:12:54.780 in the flesh, 00:12:55.480 --> 00:12:56.220 fully God, 00:12:56.600 --> 00:12:57.720 now fully man, 00:12:57.920 --> 00:14:51.000 is that this spiritual battle 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:53.120 that's taking place in the heavenly realm 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:55.159 was brought to earth. 00:14:55.980 --> 00:14:57.519 Christ, who had been at war 00:14:57.519 --> 00:14:59.579 with sin and Satan in the spiritual realm. 00:15:00.340 --> 00:15:01.539 He took on flesh. 00:15:02.179 --> 00:15:03.399 He was incarnate.
