As soon as you find him, report to me so that I too may go and worship him. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:44.000 After they had heard the king, they went on their way. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:52.000 And the star they had seen when it rose, went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:06.000 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:13.000 Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:23.000 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.000 Amen. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:28.000 Good morning, everyone. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.000 For those of you that don't know me, I'm Ray. 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:35.000 I have the honour of sharing the Lord's word with you today. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:40.000 Will you join me in a prayer as we look at the word together? 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:47.000 Father, thank you for the wonderful, true story of Christ coming to this world. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:53.000 To be born as a baby, to live as a man and to die as a saviour for us. 00:02:53.000 --> 00:03:03.000 Open our eyes this morning, open our hearts, Lord, that we may hear your word and we may respond in the right way. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.000 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:14.000 Well, last week we looked, if you were here, we looked at Matthew chapter one, verses 18 to 22. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:18.000 And we saw that central to the passage was that the birth of Jesus. 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:24.000 Jesus was a fulfilment of what God had promised through the prophets years before. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:31.000 We again see that this week in chapter two, the verses one to 11 that Lucia read to us. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:39.000 But the surprises in this week's passages are the responses of those who witnessed his birth. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:51.000 So we'll work through this together. 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:56.000 OK, right now I've got the hand of the clicker, hopefully, hopefully be OK. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:05.000 So the story as you as it was read to us by Lucia, if we follow it, it's something like a dramatic film script. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:14.000 Now, if you've been watching the TV over Christmas, it's kind of one of those unnecessary, unfortunate, necessary things, isn't it? 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:18.000 You see the films Home Alone 2 was on yesterday. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:19.000 Home Alone was on yesterday. 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:24.000 And whether you like it or not, you've got to admit it is pure fiction. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.000 All right. It's beyond the realms of possibility. 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:32.000 This is like a dramatic film script, but it is truth. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 It is gospel truth. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:37.000 That's a wonderful thing we're looking at today. 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:46.000 A child is born to an obscure poor family in a small rural village in Judea in humble circumstances. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:54.000 But this child produced extreme reactions from the influential and from the wealthy. 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:59.000 A king in nearby Jerusalem wanted to kill him. 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:06.000 And a strange nobility from another country fell down and worshipped him. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:16.000 If we really understand this morning who Jesus is, it should produce a profound reaction in us as well. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:29.000 It doesn't matter who we are, what age, what background or education, ethnicity, religion or any other label or way you like to see yourself. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:41.000 Whoever we are, when we come face to face with the claims of Jesus, there must be, there will be a response. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:48.000 Nobody can hear the gospel story and stay neutral. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:56.000 Verse one sets out the scene for us and we're introduced to the three main characters of the story. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:00.000 We have here, well, let's read the verse. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:10.000 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the East came to Jerusalem. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:15.000 So here we have the three main characters, Jesus, Herod and the Magi. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:21.000 The passage presents them each with a defining characteristic. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:28.000 I think this is true and not something I've made up, but this is how I see it, okay? 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:34.000 The promised child, a troubled king and wise visitors. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:37.000 So we're going to look at those in turn now quickly. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:42.000 The promised child. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 Who was this child? 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:50.000 We saw in last week in chapter one, verse 21, that his name is Jesus. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:59.000 But in the passage we're looking at today, we're told his name in terms of what he would do more of a title. 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:02.000 The wise men called him King of the Jews. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:05.000 Verse two, Herod called him the Messiah. 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:11.000 Strangely in verse four, the chief priests and scribes quote the prophet Micah, 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:16.000 who called him a ruler who would be a shepherd. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.000 In verse six. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:28.000 So Jesus is King, Messiah and ruler promised years before by the prophet sent by God, the father for his people. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:34.000 Just want to look very, very briefly with you now at what these titles mean. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 Very briefly. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:37.000 The promised king. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 He was God's king to lead his people. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.000 To govern them with justice, but also mercy. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 The promised Messiah. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:51.000 He was the Christ, the one anointed by God, anointed for a purpose. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:57.000 Again, chapter one, verse 21, to save his people from their sins. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:01.000 He was also the promised ruler. 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:09.000 He was a ruler who strangely we hear from this passage was to be a shepherd. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:10.000 Putting all this together. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:16.000 He was no ordinary child, but God's chosen king sent to rule his people. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:22.000 Promise to God's people for centuries before in the scriptures. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:23.000 So why a shepherd. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:24.000 Why a shepherd. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.000 Why a shepherd. 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:30.000 Prophecy that the religious leaders are paraphrasing. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:38.340 is found in Micah chapter 5 verses 2 to 5 which describes not only where he would be born 00:08:38.340 --> 00:08:45.679 but what he would do and this is where the shepherd comes in in what he would do how he would do it 00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:56.240 not sure if you can see that on the screen but it's the words of Micah chapter 5 verses 2 to 5 00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:04.480 and I'll read those to you but you Bethlehem Ephrathah though you are small among the 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:11.820 clans of Judah out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel whose origins are 00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:18.700 from of old from ancient times verse 3 then tells us that there's a woman who will bear a son 00:09:18.700 --> 00:09:24.399 and the Israelites that were away from the other body of Israelites would come together 00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:32.319 verse 4 says he will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord in the majesty of the 00:09:32.319 --> 00:09:40.240 name of the Lord his God and they will live securely for then his greatness will reach to the ends of 00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:48.559 the earth so where does this ruler shepherd come from we're told to be born in Bethlehem 00:09:48.559 --> 00:09:57.019 but Micah tells us more in verse 2 he says out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over 00:09:57.019 --> 00:10:08.719 Israel now this is it whose origins are from old from ancient times so we're told that this baby was from 00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:19.220 ancient times in other words he existed long before his birth John chapter 1 tells us that he was in the 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:27.100 beginning what with God you may recall that verse and with God he co-created the universe 00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:31.440 so Bethlehem was not the start of Jesus's life 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:40.180 so what would he do he will rule his over his people and how would he do it he would do it as a 00:10:40.180 --> 00:10:47.180 shepherd verse 4 Micah says he will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord 00:10:47.180 --> 00:10:54.680 so his mission was from the Lord and he would stand in the strength of the Lord displaying the majesty 00:10:54.679 --> 00:11:02.219 of his father and his rule his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth this was a promise 00:11:02.219 --> 00:11:11.699 made to God's people of Judah about 700 years before Jesus was born which we continue to see unfold now 00:11:11.699 --> 00:11:22.159 today 2025 as people from every nation across this globe now accept the rule of Jesus the king 00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:30.559 with that mission and that power God promised God's promised ruler would stand and shepherd his flock 00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:40.519 so the important question for us this morning is how should we respond to that shepherd ruler 00:11:40.519 --> 00:11:48.539 we're going to see how the two groups Herod and the wise men responded first of all Herod 00:11:48.539 --> 00:12:00.139 now he's a troubled king who was he historians call him Herod the Great he was installed by the Roman 00:12:00.139 --> 00:12:10.559 senate as king of Judea or king of the Jews he was known as a ruthless man who even had his wife 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:18.519 and his three sons executed he thought his wife was trying to poison him so he got rid of her before 00:12:18.519 --> 00:12:20.480 he thought she could get rid of him 00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:28.279 at this point I've got to say this is the guy we are not to follow all right this is not the example 00:12:28.279 --> 00:12:35.519 we are supposed to follow he was also a Jew and he would have been familiar with some of the prophecies 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:39.340 and and the expectation of the coming Messiah 00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:31.379 but this king was born a king 00:14:31.379 --> 00:14:36.480 Herod was installed as a king by the Roman Senate 00:14:36.480 --> 00:14:42.060 Jesus was born as king by divine order 00:14:42.060 --> 00:14:45.600 a completely different order of king 00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:47.080 this is why he was worried 00:14:47.080 --> 00:14:49.320 so he calls the wise men secretly 00:14:49.320 --> 00:14:54.019 he plays them along and he pretends he wants to worship the child as well 00:14:54.019 --> 00:14:58.019 later chapter 2 verse 16 00:14:58.019 --> 00:15:00.539 we see his real ambition 00:15:00.539 --> 00:15:01.980 he hatches a plan 00:15:01.980 --> 00:15:04.059 to get rid of the child 00:15:04.059 --> 00:15:06.579 but in so doing 00:15:06.579 --> 00:15:08.159 he would wipe out 00:15:08.159 --> 00:15:10.399 all the boys in Bethlehem 00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:12.199 aged 2 and under 00:15:12.199 --> 00:15:15.439 Herod knew the scriptures 00:15:15.439 --> 00:15:17.620 he knew who the child was 00:15:17.620 --> 00:15:20.259 but he determined to get rid of him 00:15:20.259 --> 00:15:22.939 he would not tolerate 00:15:22.939 --> 00:15:24.679 what he saw as a rival --> 00:15:47.539 has been the story of mankind 00:15:47.539 --> 00:15:50.059 since Genesis chapter 3 00:15:50.059 --> 00:15:52.559 Adam thought he knew best 00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:55.279 he disobeyed the one God had given 00:15:55.279 --> 00:15:58.419 the one rule God had given him 00:15:58.419 --> 00:16:01.779 and we still do that today 00:16:01.779 --> 00:16:06.879 look frankly we may not be as
