imagine them saying, 00:03:09.539 --> 00:03:12.200 I wish I was at that church in Sardis. 00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:16.680 I wish I lived in that city so I wasn't faced with the persecution, 00:03:17.259 --> 00:03:21.379 with the poverty, with the starvation and fear of death that I'm facing. 00:03:21.379 --> 00:03:25.039 Because there's something unique about this city. 00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:26.539 This church in Sardis. 00:03:27.819 --> 00:03:29.699 There is no persecution mentioned. 00:03:31.379 --> 00:03:34.400 In all of these letters to the different cities, 00:03:34.740 --> 00:03:39.139 there's persecution mentioned in all of them except here in Sardis. 00:03:39.139 --> 00:03:42.179 The church at Ephesus was struggling with evil people. 00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:45.219 In Smyrna, there was tribulation and poverty. 00:03:45.719 --> 00:03:49.799 In Pergamum, Jesus says that Satan has power over this place. 00:03:50.500 --> 00:03:52.859 And in Thyatira, we saw last week, 00:03:53.239 --> 00:03:56.599 they're faced with the sexual immorality of Jezebel. 00:03:56.599 --> 00:04:00.840 And to each of these cities, even though there's persecution, 00:04:01.500 --> 00:04:03.819 Jesus has something positive to say. 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:09.340 But when we get to Sardis, it's a different story. 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:12.759 Jesus has nothing positive to say about this city. 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.180 Instead, Jesus says, 00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:17.540 I know your works. 00:04:18.219 --> 00:04:20.279 You have the reputation of being alive. 00:04:20.740 --> 00:04:22.980 00:05:09.120 The church is obviously busy, 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:11.100 doing all kinds of works, 00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:12.480 probably very good works, 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:13.720 feeding the poor, 00:05:14.080 --> 00:05:15.360 going to church every day, 00:05:15.480 --> 00:05:16.259 reading the Bible. 00:05:17.900 --> 00:05:19.120 But before God, 00:05:19.840 --> 00:05:21.500 their works were not complete. 00:05:22.199 --> 00:05:24.240 They were just going through the motions. 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:28.780 Their works are not the result of obedience and repentance. 00:05:28.779 --> there are still a few 00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:47.019 who hadn't let death overtake them. 00:05:47.259 --> 00:05:49.579 There are still a few who were following Jesus. 00:05:50.679 --> 00:05:53.739 And they're described as not having soiled their clothes. 00:05:53.899 --> 00:05:55.199 It's a really graphic image. 00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:56.039 You know, 00:05:56.079 --> 00:05:57.060 I've got two little children. 00:05:57.180 --> 00:05:58.979 I can tell you what soiled clothes look like. 00:05:59.259 --> 00:06:00.339 It's very graphic. 00:06:00.819 --> 00:06:05.039 These people have not let defilement come in. 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:07.719 The implication for the rest of the church is, 00:06:08.500 --> 00:06:11.139 defilement sin has crept in. 00:06:11.939 --> 00:06:13.599 They have soiled their clothes with it. 00:06:13.919 --> 00:06:16.079 And it's made a mess of their lives. 00:06:17.740 --> 00:06:19.539 The sin of the other cities was obvious. 00:06:19.659 --> 00:06:21.019 They were worshipping other gods. 00:06:21.480 --> 00:06:23.259 They were sexually immoral. 00:06:23.259 --> 00:06:24.719 But here, 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:27.980 the sin of Sardis was more subtle. 00:06:28.199 --> 00:06:28.740 It was hidden. 00:06:30.620 --> 00:06:33.740 And the problem is that the church had gotten lazy. 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:36.620 They'd been convinced that their busyness 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:38.680 was a sign that they were healthy. 00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:42.560 They had a reputation that they were alive. 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:44.879 And they were convinced by through the motions. 00:07:55.939 --> 00:07:57.320 I'm doing these things 00:07:57.320 --> 00:07:59.900 and therefore God must live. 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:01.899 If I tick these boxes, 00:08:02.279 --> 00:08:03.899 I'm all right with God. 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:08.319 This church had forgotten what they had heard. 00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:11.739 They had turned away and forgotten about Jesus. 00:08:13.079 --> 00:08:15.779 These are hard words to hear. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:20.560 Everything you've been doing as a church has been a waste. 00:08:21.019 --> 00:08:22.620 You think you've been loving God, 00:08:22.779 --> 00:08:26.019 but you as a church are dead. 00:08:26.019 --> 00:08:28.079 This is damning. 00:08:29.259 --> 00:08:30.859 And it's probably the hardest words 00:08:30.859 --> 00:08:33.019 that Jesus has to say to any of these cities. 00:08:35.059 --> 00:08:38.159 But Jesus doesn't leave them there in this position. 00:08:38.779 --> 00:08:39.980 He gives them some 00:08:53.159 --> 00:08:55.019 Now, if you came from Sardis, 00:08:55.019 --> 00:08:56.960 these words, 00:08:57.139 --> 00:08:57.699 watch out, 00:08:58.299 --> 00:09:00.579 would have a very special meaning for you. 00:09:00.899 --> 00:09:02.460 Let me just give you a brief picture 00:09:02.460 --> 00:09:03.779 of Sardis' history. 00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:06.220 The city of Sardis 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:09.019 actually had a wonderful reputation. 00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:10.340 At one point, 00:09:10.460 --> 00:09:12.439 they were one of the most powerful cities. 00:09:13.460 --> 00:09:13.939 The city, 00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:14.919 the majority of the city, 00:09:14.980 --> 00:09:16.439 was located on top of a mountain, 00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:17.799 Mount Tmolus. 00:09:18.199 --> 00:09:20.240 And it had these massive walls. 00:09:20.679 --> 00:09:23.319 Walls that were over 1,500 feet high. 00:09:23.320 --> 00:09:25.480 If you don't know the measurement feet, 00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:27.700 that means it's really big walls. 00:09:29.160 --> 00:09:30.060 And this city, 00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:32.160 they just had the reputation 00:09:32.160 --> 00:09:35.100 that you don't mess with Sardis. 00:09:35.340 --> 00:09:36.900 You can't get through these walls. 00:09:37.900 --> 00:09:39.360 So armies didn't come against them 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:41.379 because they had this reputation 00:09:41.379 --> 00:09:44.140 of being totally impenetrable. 00:09:44.139 --> 00:09:46.939 But twice in its history, 00:09:47.740 --> 00:09:49.840 first by Cyrus in the 6th century 00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:51.620 and then by Antiochus the Great 00:09:51.620 --> 00:09:52.659 in the 3rd century, 00:09:53.319 --> 00:09:54.819 they overtook this city. 00:09:55.259 --> 00:09:56.919 Not by sending a massive army 00:09:56.919 --> 00:09:57.919 against these walls, 00:09:58.819 --> 00:10:00.699 but by sending a few men 00:10:00.699 --> 00:10:02.679 to climb up over the wall 00:10:02.679 --> 00:10:04.000 when no one was looking 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:05.379 to open the gates 00:10:05.379 --> 00:10:07.000 to let the army in. 00:10:07.799 --> 00:10:09.879 The failure of the city of Sardis 00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:11.939 was that they didn't watch out. 00:10:11.940 --> 00:10:14.320 They didn't have people watching the walls 00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:17.360 for that subtle hidden attack 00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:17.980 from their enemy. 00:10:19.100 --> 00:10:21.240 They thought they were invincible. 00:10:21.680 --> 00:10:23.380 They believed their own reputation. 00:10:24.040 -->
