identified himself to be the Messiah. 00:07:03.939 --> 00:07:08.280 That is God's anointed king, God's saving king. 00:07:08.920 --> 00:07:13.080 And here's what he says about himself in chapter 9, verse 22. 00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:16.759 And Jesus said, 00:07:16.839 --> 00:07:17.740 The Son of Man, 00:07:17.939 --> 00:07:20.800 his favourite title for referring to himself, 00:07:21.500 --> 00:07:21.899 he says, 00:07:21.959 --> 00:07:24.439 The Son of Man must suffer many things, 00:07:24.919 --> 00:07:26.560 be rejected by the elders, 00:07:26.839 --> 00:07:27.839 the chief priests, 00:07:27.959 --> 00:07:29.039 the teachers of the law, 00:07:29.339 --> 00:07:30.939 and that he must be killed, 00:07:31.360 --> 00:07:34.479 and on the third day be raised to life. 00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:37.000 So here, for the first time, 00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:39.500 Jesus is making it crystal clear to us. 00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:42.580 He's telling us that he must die. 00:07:43.140 --> 00:07:45.000 He must go to the cross. 00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:46.900 And from this point forward, 00:07:47.100 --> 00:07:50.759 everything in Luke is heading towards Jerusalem, 00:07:50.759 --> 00:07:52.620 where Jesus will die. 00:07:52.620 --> 00:07:55.860 So, if you look at verse 51 of chapter 9, 00:07:56.379 --> 00:07:56.980 it reads, 00:07:57.120 --> 00:08:00.540 As the time approached for Jesus to be taken up into heaven, 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:04.740 Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 00:08:05.240 --> 00:08:07.720 Jerusalem is the place of execution. 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:10.540 In Jerusalem, Jesus will die. 00:08:10.939 --> 00:08:12.399 And from this point onwards, 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:13.600 time and time again, 00:08:13.740 --> 00:08:15.139 Luke keeps telling us that 00:08:15.139 --> 00:08:18.040 Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. 00:08:18.040 --> 00:08:22.180 Because, at the cross, 00:08:23.080 --> 00:08:26.140 salvation comes. 00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:31.160 So the first timing that we need to be adjusted to is 00:08:31.160 --> 00:08:32.639 cross time. 00:08:33.800 --> 00:08:38.920 The second timing is judgment time. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:41.279 Have a look at chapter 12. 00:08:42.539 --> 00:08:46.279 Chapter 12 obviously comes before chapter 13, 00:08:46.279 --> 00:08:48.159 and in chapter 12, 00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:50.399 Jesus has been telling a parable, 00:08:50.579 --> 00:08:54.120 a story about his return in judgment. 00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:57.100 So chapter 12, verse 40. 00:09:00.740 --> 00:09:02.360 And he's telling us there, 00:09:02.500 --> 00:09:03.220 Jesus says, 00:09:03.379 --> 00:09:05.779 You also must be ready, 00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:08.360 because the Son of Man, 00:09:08.740 --> 00:09:11.500 again, that same title that he gives to himself, 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.039 will come at an hour or at a time 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:17.459 when you do not expect him. 00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:19.259 One day, 00:09:19.379 --> 00:09:22.419 the risen Lord Jesus is going to return in judgment. 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:23.339 And he's saying, 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:25.079 we've got to be ready for this. 00:09:25.819 --> 00:09:28.799 And to help us to understand how we need to be ready, 00:09:29.159 --> 00:09:31.039 he tells another short story. 00:09:31.459 --> 00:09:32.459 Verse 57. 00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:34.120 It's like a little illustration. 00:09:34.779 --> 00:09:35.939 Have a look at chapter 12, 00:09:36.019 --> 00:09:36.899 verse 57. 00:09:36.899 --> 00:09:45.500 Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? 00:09:47.299 --> 00:09:50.399 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, 00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:50.860 so he's saying, 00:09:50.939 --> 00:09:52.720 look, put yourself in this situation. 00:09:53.179 --> 00:09:56.039 As you're going with your adversary to the magistrate, 00:09:56.340 --> 00:09:59.179 try hard to be reconciled on the way, 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:02.659 or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, 00:10:02.659 --> 00:10:05.059 and the judge turn you over to the officer, 00:10:05.179 --> 00:10:07.079 and the officer throw you into prison. 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:08.919 In other words, 00:10:09.319 --> 00:10:10.679 time is running out. 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:12.360 There is an urgency. 00:10:13.459 --> 00:10:17.819 We've got to sort things out with God. 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:19.019 You see, 00:10:19.199 --> 00:10:22.000 cross time prepares us 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:24.539 for the coming of Jesus. 00:10:25.419 --> 00:10:28.299 And that's the time frame we're in right now. 00:10:28.579 --> 00:10:30.600 The cross has happened. 00:10:30.600 --> 00:10:33.519 But judgment is yet to come. 00:10:33.920 --> 00:12:47.500 --> 00:12:49.779 And the reason we need to repent. 00:12:50.899 --> 00:12:52.120 Well, there's two reasons 00:12:52.120 --> 00:12:53.240 in this little section. 00:12:54.199 --> 00:13:19.759 whose blood 00:13:19.759 --> 00:13:20.860 Pilate had mixed 00:13:20.860 --> 00:13:22.139 with their sacrifices. 00:13:23.160 --> 00:13:24.120 It sounds horrific, 00:13:24.300 --> 00:13:24.840 doesn't it? 00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:27.500 It was a horrific murder 00:13:27.500 --> 00:13:28.440 that took place. 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:29.700 Pilate, of course, 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:31.960 was the Roman prefect, 00:13:32.060 --> 00:13:33.600 the one who was in charge. 00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:35.580 He was in charge 00:13:35.580 --> 00:13:37.300 of military and security. 00:13:38.620 --> 00:13:39.540 And from history, 00:13:39.640 --> 00:13:40.580 history tells us 00:13:40.580 --> 00:13:42.580 he was quite a brutal man. 00:13:42.900 --> 00:13:44.259 And to remind the people 00:13:44.259 --> 00:13:45.480 who was in charge, 00:13:45.960 --> 00:13:46.860 he would just often 00:13:46.860 --> 00:13:47.780 have them killed. 00:13:49.220 --> 00:13:50.360 And here we're them, 00:14:17.879 --> 00:14:18.879 perhaps looking down 00:14:18.879 --> 00:14:19.639 at their friends 00:14:19.639 --> 00:14:20.399 down below. 00:14:20.600 --> 00:14:21.519 The next minute
