Samuel 26, I was thinking this week about a book that a guy named Malcolm Gladwell, 00:00:55.579 --> 00:00:59.839 a popular writer published actually a number of years ago called Blink. 00:01:01.239 --> 00:01:05.679 The subtitle of that book was The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. 00:01:07.879 --> 00:01:12.479 So this book was about sort of human intuition and decision-making. 00:01:13.039 --> 00:01:23.319 He makes this sort of bold claim in this book that oftentimes our spontaneous decisions are actually better than the decisions that we actually carefully plan or consider. 00:01:23.319 --> 00:01:30.239 He puts forward this idea that he calls thin slicing, which is sort of a lingo-y term that he makes up, 00:01:30.659 --> 00:01:39.059 which is basically he says that our ability to gauge what's really important actually comes through just a very narrow period of experience, 00:01:39.139 --> 00:01:42.879 that we're able to do that in a sort of intuitive level as human beings really quickly. 00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:50.060 And if we're overloaded by too much information or too much deliberation, we often make worse decisions, he says, 00:01:50.179 --> 00:01:52.239 00:03:06.540 --> 00:03:10.719 that you're the sort of person who can do that well 00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:17.759 is through deep thinking and immersion in what's good and true apart from those times. 00:03:18.879 --> 00:03:20.540 In other words, in order to blink, 00:03:20.819 --> 00:03:25.200 it's got to be preceded by a lot of rich and true thinking. 00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:29.680 That is, you've got to saturate your mind and heart in what's good and true. 00:03:30.039 --> 00:03:34.319 And that's the only way to make sure your intuitions are sharpened and prepared when you need to act. he's already been sort of anointed as Israel's future king, 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:06.939 but he's not yet on the throne. 00:04:07.780 --> 00:04:10.640 And Saul, the current king, well, what's he up to? 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:14.379 Well, he is full of jealousy and rage and he's out to kill David, 00:04:14.379 --> 00:04:16.219 which is why David's on the run. 00:04:17.120 --> 00:04:19.839 So in 1 Samuel 26, this chapter we're looking at tonight, 00:04:20.219 --> 00:04:24.819 this is the last time that David and Saul are going to meet ever in their lives. 00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:29.240 And David is again in this final meeting, as we saw a couple weeks ago, 00:04:29.300 --> 00:04:32.079 he's faced with a decision. 00:04:33.079 --> 00:04:35.139 He's faced with a test, really. 00:04:35.139 --> 00:04:40.539 And what we're going to see tonight, David has the opportunity, it seems, 00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:43.759 to end his problems once and for all. 00:04:44.919 --> 00:04:49.099 And in that moment of decision, how is he going to respond? 00:04:51.159 --> 00:04:55.419 And for us tonight, how can we learn, what can we learn, 00:04:55.699 --> 00:05:01.939 and how can we learn to face hard decisions when temptations and trials come at us? 00:05:01.939 --> 00:05:05.219 So let's look at 1 Samuel 26. 00:05:05.660 --> 00:05:08.399 We're going to look at the first half first and the second half second. 00:05:08.740 --> 00:05:13.860 So let me read verses 1 through 12 for us of 1 Samuel chapter 26. 00:05:15.800 --> 00:05:16.819 The writer says this, 00:05:16.860 --> 00:05:19.379 Then the Ziphites, those are the people from Ziph, 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:21.620 came to Saul at Gibeah saying, 00:05:22.100 --> 00:05:24.860 Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hakalah, 00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:26.879 which is on the east side of Jeshamun? 00:05:27.339 --> 00:05:29.100 They're basically ratting out David here. 00:05:29.100 --> 00:05:32.140 So Saul rose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph 00:05:32.140 --> 00:05:36.840 with 3,000 chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 00:05:37.640 --> 00:05:40.580 And Saul encamped on the hill of Hakalah, 00:05:41.140 --> 00:05:44.120 which is beside the road on the east of Jeshamun. 00:05:44.900 --> 00:05:46.340 But David remained in the wilderness. 00:05:47.200 --> 00:05:50.939 When he saw that Saul came out after him into the wilderness, 00:05:51.100 --> 00:05:54.500 David sent out spies and learned that Saul had indeed come. 00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:57.980 Then David rose and came to the place 00:07:37.740 --> 00:07:40.240 So here's the scene, right? 00:07:40.460 --> 00:07:42.319 Saul gets word of where David's hiding, 00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:46.840 and Saul comes out with a big army to kill David and his men. 00:07:46.839 --> 00:07:51.179 Saul brings 3,000 to face David's group of 600. 00:07:52.119 --> 00:07:57.799 You can tell at this point in the story that Saul is more than a bit paranoid and fueled by jealousy. 00:07:57.939 --> 00:08:01.959 He's bringing 3,000 men into the army to off David once and for all. 00:08:03.259 --> 00:08:07.259 And you'll remember, this sounds a lot like chapter 24 that we looked at a few weeks ago, doesn't it? 00:08:08.019 --> 00:08:10.719 You know, Saul's coming out to get David in the wilderness. 00:08:10.720 --> 00:08:15.680 But David catches word that he's being hunted again, and he goes and he spies out their camp, 00:08:15.880 --> 00:08:20.940 and then looking down, probably from a cliff above Saul's camp, sees them there all laid out, 00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:27.400 with Saul in the middle, and Abner, his right-hand man, sort of laying beside him, protecting him, 00:08:27.500 --> 00:08:29.260 and the rest of the men encamped around. 00:08:29.259 --> 00:08:33.500 And then David makes this split decision. 00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:36.399 Who wants to come with me into the camp? 00:08:37.799 --> 00:08:42.279 He says this to two guys, Ahimelech and Abishai, two of his young soldiers. 00:08:42.759 --> 00:08:48.259 And Abishai, apparently ready for a crazy adrenaline-fueled adventure, says, 00:08:48.659 --> 00:08:50.399 heck yeah, take me, I'll go. 00:08:50.399 --> 00:08:56.919 Now look, there's 3,000 men down there, ready to just kill these guys. 00:08:57.059 --> 00:08:59.220 And Abishai's like, yeah, sign me up for that job. 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:05.500 You know, we need to remember when we read the Bible that these are some pretty tough, audacious guys. 00:09:05.639 --> 00:09:08.860 This wasn't like, you know, yeah, well, whatever. 00:09:09.419 --> 00:09:12.299 Of course, Abishai thinks they're going on this seek-and-destroy mission, right? 00:09:12.439 --> 00:09:15.500 He's thinking that we're going to go in, kill Saul, and get out. 00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:16.720 In, out, done. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:22.080 And once they get into the camp, Abishai sees his chance to make all their problems go away. 00:09:22.200 --> 00:09:24.139 In verse 8, he says, David, I got this. 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:24.820 Here's our chance. 00:09:25.139 --> 00:09:30.279 I'll pull out the spear, pin Saul to the earth with one stroke, and we're done. 00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:33.080 And trust me, I'm not going to need to swing twice. 00:09:34.540 --> 00:09:35.019 It's interesting. 00:09:35.139 --> 00:09:37.700 It's possible that Abishai there, saying, I don't need to hit him twice, 00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:42.660 is sort of remembering how Saul used to throw his spear at David and would always miss. 00:09:43.160 --> 00:09:46.100 And Abishai's basically saying, trust me, David, I ain't going to miss. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:55.360 Wouldn't it be poetic justice for me, David, to stick Saul with the very spear he 00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:20.480 Saul is still the Lord's anointed and will be the guilty ones if we touch him. 00:10:22.700 --> 00:10:30.140 Now, what I really want us to focus on tonight is what empowers that sort of obedience to God. 00:10:30.139 --> 00:10:37.519 How is it that David, given the opportunity to make all his troubles to go away, 00:10:37.980 --> 00:10:41.139 he's got to give one little word to his friend Abishai, and it's done. 00:10:41.960 --> 00:10:43.139 No more people hunting them. 00:10:43.259 --> 00:10:45.019 No more 3,000 men they need to hide from. 00:10:45.480 --> 00:10:48.720 Nothing else blocking him from the throne, from the crown, from the glory. 00:10:50.500 --> 00:10:55.480 How is it that with that chance right before David, he refrains? 00:10:55.480 --> 00:11:00.500 How is he able to maintain his obedience to God in that kind of test? 00:11:05.180 --> 00:11:07.820 I mean, don't you want to know, to be honest? 00:11:08.460 --> 00:11:13.159 Don't you wish you knew what could actually help you and me to actually do what God says, 00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:18.159 to obey and follow the Lord, even in the teeth of trial and temptation like that? this week have you and I seen the proverbial spear right in front of us 00:11:36.659 --> 00:11:42.299 and reached out like Adam and Eve in the garden, grabbed it, and have tried to do things our own way? 00:11:42.299 --> 00:11:48.000 Tried to solve our problems our own way, tried to get happiness our own way, 00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:51.079 and to do it all apart from God? 00:11:53.519 --> 00:11:55.039 Isn't it true that we need help? 00:11:58.219 --> 00:12:01.399 And the question that we often have is, what help is there for us? 00:12:02.120 --> 00:12:03.099 What help is there for us? 00:12:03.139 --> 00:12:07.839 We know, of course, that in Jesus Christ, as we've been singing about and reading about tonight, 00:12:07.840 --> 00:12:12.100 we know that in Christ, all of our sins, past, present, and future, are forgiven. 00:12:13.200 --> 00:12:16.960 But what help does Jesus give us to battle sin in the everyday? 00:12:17.720 --> 00:12:18.800 How do we grow in holiness? 00:12:18.920 --> 00:12:20.300 How do we become more like him? 00:12:22.840 --> 00:12:27.300 And I want to focus on just two big ideas that we see in the chapter tonight 00:12:27.300 --> 00:12:29.320 that help us along those lines. 00:12:30.980 --> 00:12:36.440 And we read the first one already in chapters, in verses 11, 10, and 11, here in our chapter. 00:12:36.440 --> 00:12:40.900 Verses 10 and 11, here are the sort of main speech of this first half of the chapter. 00:12:41.020 --> 00:12:43.740 And what we see here, like two sides of a coin, 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:48.420 something that helps us in the face of trial and temptation is this. 00:12:48.820 --> 00:12:54.560 It's confidence in God's sovereignty to deliver us from our troubles. 00:12:56.060 --> 00:13:00.760 And the flip side of the coin is clarity about our responsibility in the meantime. 00:13:03.040 --> 00:13:04.620 Let's look a little closer at that. 00:13:04.620 --> 00:13:09.179 David knows that as long as Saul lives, his own life will be in danger, right? 00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:12.600 And as many times as Saul says, I'm sorry, David knows he can't be trusted. 00:13:13.139 --> 00:13:14.759 But in verse 10, what does David do? 00:13:15.080 --> 00:13:22.580 David expresses this incredible confidence that God's will, in God's own timing, deliver him from Saul. 00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:28.220 And David actually imagines any number of ways that Saul could come to an end, 00:13:28.299 --> 00:13:29.500 that God could deliver him. 00:13:29.500 --> 00:13:32.080 Maybe the Lord will strike Saul directly. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:34.419 Maybe Saul will die naturally. 00:13:35.299 --> 00:13:36.899 Maybe God will strike him down in battle. 00:13:39.320 --> 00:13:42.440 If you were here a couple weeks ago, you'll remember in the last chapter of 1 Samuel, 00:13:42.899 --> 00:13:45.399 that the Lord did just that to Nabal, struck him down. 00:13:47.139 --> 00:13:53.320 It seems that David had learned an important lesson from that event about the Lord's sovereignty, 00:13:53.440 --> 00:13:54.559 and he's applying it here. 00:13:54.559 --> 00:13:57.739 Now, what's the point for us? 00:13:59.059 --> 00:14:01.500 David knew that there were all sorts of ways that God could deliver him from Saul. 00:14:01.659 --> 00:14:04.539 He even seems to have articulated them in his mind. 00:14:04.919 --> 00:14:08.559 Now, okay, that concrete example seems a little bit morbid to us, right? 00:14:08.599 --> 00:14:12.079 Like David's running over in his mind all the ways that Saul's going to meet his end. 00:14:12.779 --> 00:14:15.139 But think about the principle underneath that. 00:14:16.039 --> 00:14:17.599 What is David doing there? 00:14:17.600 --> 00:14:28.540 You know, he's actually working out in his mind ways in which his sovereign and good God 00:14:28.540 --> 00:14:35.720 could work in his freedom and in his power in all sorts of ways for his good. 00:14:37.620 --> 00:14:41.220 Because God's powerful and good and keeps his promise, 00:14:41.639 --> 00:14:45.580 David knows that there are all sorts of ways that God could deliver him. 00:14:45.580 --> 00:14:49.840 And friends, when we're in the face of trial and in temptation, 00:14:50.520 --> 00:14:58.100 do we have that kind of reflective confidence when we consider God's ways? 00:15:00.280 --> 00:15:05.500 Do we exalt you're God and you can do it in all sorts of ways. 00:15:25.679 --> 00:15:27.799 And of course, we need to let God be God, right? 00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:31.659 God is not confined to the ways we might praising God that he's a good God, that he can bring people into my life from all sorts of avenues and venues. 00:17:00.379 --> 00:17:04.319 It will look like praying for him to change my own heart to be faithful to the Lord in this. 00:17:54.279 --> 00:18:02.700 And I'm going to be faithful in investing in my spiritual family in the church and finding a smaller group that I can work with and whatever the sort of issue is for you, where God's word speaks, you know, that clarity is critical, isn't it? 00:18:16.220 --> 00:18:23.180 And that clarity needs to be thought through and trusted deeply beforehand. 00:18:25.600 --> 00:18:32.100 Because as you and I know, in the moment of trial and in the moment of temptation, that's not the time to start deliberating. 00:18:33.240 --> down, 00:24:53.079 --> 00:24:54.960 then we should offer the lord a sacrifice 00:24:54.960 --> 00:24:56.319 and get things right with him. 00:24:57.319 --> 00:24:59.500 But if it's men who are driving
