ventured here before in our lives. 00:00:26.199 --> 00:00:29.100 Maybe this is the first time you've ever heard from the book of Isaiah. 00:00:29.100 --> 00:00:40.939 But what we're going to see over the next few weeks, I pray, is not only is this a book that contains some quite breathtaking descriptions of the person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:51.659 But it's a book that explains why you and I in 21st century Scotland on a rainy Sunday morning have bothered to come to church. 00:00:51.960 --> 00:00:54.320 It's that big what's going on in Isaiah. 00:00:54.320 that song sound very upbeat. 00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:39.300 But it's original. 00:02:39.420 --> 00:02:41.120 We have to understand Psalm 137. 00:02:41.259 --> 00:02:41.759 It's original. 00:02:41.939 --> 00:02:45.060 These words are anything other than upbeat. 00:02:46.039 --> 00:02:51.259 Because Psalm 137 is a psalm that's filled with pain. 00:02:51.699 --> 00:02:53.219 And it's filled with tears. 00:02:53.500 --> 00:02:57.140 And it's filled with massive questions about where is God in our lives. 00:02:57.139 --> 00:03:02.799 Because it's a psalm that's written by a generation of God's people living at some point. 00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:05.139 We'll just call it after 600 BC. 00:03:06.779 --> 00:03:10.619 And they have been so painfully defeated and carried away from their homeland. 00:03:11.259 --> 00:03:18.039 And they're living some 500 miles away from Israel, from Judah, in this place called Babylon. 00:03:18.039 --> 00:03:24.379 Now Babylon is the cultural and religious capital of the ancient world. 00:03:24.819 --> 00:03:25.979 I was reading about it this week. 00:03:26.079 --> 00:03:33.579 Historians tell us that this place is home to some 1200 temples which are dedicated to pagan gods. 00:03:33.580 --> 00:03:42.560 And the people of Israel, they're being taunted by their enemies as they sit here by the rivers of Babylon. 00:03:42.900 --> 00:03:46.680 They're being taunted and people are saying to them, where is your God now? 00:03:47.720 --> 00:03:48.660 Where has he gone? 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:51.280 I'll tell you where he is. 00:03:51.660 --> 00:03:54.240 He's absolutely nowhere because we defeated him. 00:03:55.200 --> 00:04:00.460 Because in this day, to defeat a nation, it's also thought that you've defeated their God. 00:04:00.580 --> 00:04:02.800 So these people are being taunted, where is your God? 00:04:03.620 --> 00:04:04.180 Where is he? 00:04:05.800 --> 00:04:06.800 And so they're sitting there. 00:04:06.900 --> 00:04:10.020 They're saying, remember the days when we used to sing the Lord's song in Zion. 00:04:10.140 --> 00:04:11.140 What incredible days. 00:04:11.260 --> 00:04:16.019 What days seem like a million miles away from where we are just now. 00:04:17.019 --> 00:04:20.500 And the question you have to ask as you come to Isaiah is, why has this happened? 00:04:20.500 --> 00:04:21.579 Why has this happened? 00:04:21.579 --> 00:04:28.279 Well, the first big section of this book, chapters 1 to 39, answer that question, why? 00:04:29.659 --> 00:04:31.839 Chapters 1 to 39, answer that question, why? 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:38.339 It's often said that the heart of the human problem is the problem of the human heart. 00:04:39.659 --> 00:04:44.199 And that's exactly what's going on for Israel in the background here. 00:04:44.199 --> 00:04:51.319 You see, Isaiah, he's speaking to a generation of God's people who are still living in their homeland. 00:04:52.399 --> 00:05:03.240 And one of the things that the Lord has said through Isaiah was that this exile to Babylon from Judah is coming because of the people's flagrant rebellion and idolatry. 00:05:03.659 --> 00:05:04.459 This is why it's coming. 00:05:06.159 --> 00:05:12.240 Their hypocritical and their token worship of him, their exploitation of the poor and vulnerable who are living in the land. 00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:20.060 The fact that they're looking to political alliances with surrounding superpowers to try and secure their future as a nation. 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:31.100 The fact that they're having love affairs with the idols of the nations who are round about them, who they are looking to for their security and their satisfaction rather than God. 00:05:31.100 --> 00:05:35.680 And their idolatry is a double whammy, really. 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:42.040 If you want to think about it like this, idolatry, it always is looking for something else to fill the hole apart from God. 00:05:42.040 --> 00:05:51.200 Because by cutting themselves off from God, not only are they cutting themselves off from the source of living and fresh water. 00:05:52.140 --> 00:05:54.320 It's able to give life to their souls. 00:05:54.319 --> 00:06:06.740 But they are now drinking from contaminated water because they are filling their lives with these false promises and hopes of lifeless idols, of these God pretenders of the nations round about them. 00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:09.339 It's a double whammy. 00:06:09.339 --> 00:06:18.879 You know, we're trying to sell our flat at the minute and every time we know people are coming round, what we do is we fill it with fresh flowers. 00:06:19.659 --> 00:06:21.779 That's what the estate agent told us to do, so we're doing it. 00:06:22.299 --> 00:06:23.399 Fill it with fresh flowers. 00:06:24.679 --> 00:06:31.159 And those flowers, when we buy them, they look great, they smell great, they make the flat look fresh and vibrant. 00:06:32.099 --> 00:06:38.359 But see, six days later, we even cleared it up this morning, the petals have fallen off. 00:06:39.339 --> 00:06:40.819 And they go in the bin. 00:06:42.419 --> 00:06:44.000 And I was thinking about it this week. 00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:45.419 Do you know when those flowers died? 00:06:46.759 --> 00:06:48.779 They didn't die when I put them in the bin. 00:06:49.379 --> 00:06:51.479 They didn't die when we bought them from the shop. 00:06:51.659 --> 00:06:57.719 Those flowers started dying the minute they were cut off from their life source. 00:06:59.579 --> 00:07:05.899 Their only hope is that they get reconnected with the thing that gives them life. 00:07:05.899 --> 00:07:12.319 And that's exactly true of what's going on in the lives of these Israelites. 00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:16.719 And that's exactly what's true of us for each of us here today. 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:26.699 As we stand before a holy God, that if we have rejected Jesus Christ, we have cut ourselves off from the source of life. 00:07:27.540 --> 00:07:28.420 And we're dying. 00:07:28.420 --> 00:07:36.500 Without him, without this God, this God of grace, we're just about to see in a minute, we are dying. 00:07:37.379 --> 00:07:40.140 You see, the exile is not some kind of unexpected world event. 00:07:40.259 --> 00:07:50.780 It's the sovereign act of a holy God who's used this nation of Babylon to bring his judgment to pass on his people for their willful rejection of him. 00:07:50.779 --> 00:08:01.359 So the people, they sit there in Babylon and they're singing, lamenting, in the mud of the road mess, hearing the taunts of their enemies. 00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:07.219 And they're probably thinking, is this curtains for us as a people? 00:08:07.359 --> 00:08:07.979 Is this it? 00:08:08.859 --> 00:08:09.619 Have we had it? 00:08:10.619 --> 00:08:11.639 What have they got? 00:08:11.899 --> 00:08:12.639 Where do they run? 00:08:13.779 --> 00:08:18.579 Well, what they have got, the only card that they've got, is the grace card. 00:08:18.579 --> 00:08:24.939 What they have, is they have a God of grace who's committed himself to them. 00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:28.120 And who speaks words of comfort to them. 00:08:28.839 --> 00:08:31.459 And says, stop looking to idols. 00:08:31.759 --> 00:08:34.939 Stop looking to things that will not give you life and come back to me. 00:08:35.819 --> 00:08:36.879 Come back to me. 00:08:37.259 --> 00:08:38.120 Return to me. 00:08:38.360 --> 00:08:40.259 That's where chapter 40 breaks in. 00:08:40.659 --> 00:08:43.699 Comfort, comfort my people, says the Lord. 00:08:44.740 --> 00:08:45.539 Comfort them. 00:08:45.539 --> 00:08:50.860 Speak words of truth about what I'm going to do to act, to reverse this situation. 00:08:51.319 --> 00:08:58.500 You see, God in this first half of this book, 1 to 39, he's made some pronouncing judgments about what he's going to do because of the people's sin. 00:08:59.599 --> 00:09:04.500 But he's made some massive promises about what he's going to do for his people. 00:09:04.500 --> 00:09:08.759 Promises that he's going to act to save them from their mess. 00:09:09.580 --> 00:09:12.120 Lead them to the land that he's promised them. 00:09:12.639 --> 00:09:15.740 Cleanse them from their sin. 00:09:16.659 --> 00:09:23.919 Rebuild them as a people and give them renewed hearts that beat for him alone, that joyfully obey him and want to worship him. 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:31.379 And get this, through them, his renewed people, God's people, he's going to, through them, bless the nations. 00:09:33.379 --> 00:09:36.860 And they'll also come to worship him and enjoy him forever as their God. 00:09:37.500 --> 00:09:38.459 Huge promises. 00:09:39.839 --> 00:09:45.939 And huge promises that God will bring to come and maybe even for the first time today, 00:11:06.200 --> 00:11:09.159 take a fresh look at Jesus. 00:11:09.159 --> 00:11:15.860 And come with me then to these spectacular words of Isaiah 42. Babylon, 00:11:23.939 --> 00:11:26.899 they're meant to recall these words that God spoke about his servant. 00:11:27.199 --> 00:11:29.299 And what we see firstly, verses 1 to 4, 00:11:29.439 --> 00:11:31.860 is that this servant has a mission on his mind. 00:11:31.860 --> 00:11:35.560 Here is God's view of his servant. 00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:37.600 If we pick it up at verse 1. 00:11:37.820 --> 00:11:42.139 He wants them and he wants you and he wants me to know how he feels about his servant. 00:11:43.560 --> 00:11:44.340 His man. 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:46.759 The guy he's got for his justice. 00:14:35.659 --> 00:14:36.139 Now, 00:14:36.179 --> 00:14:45.620 biblical justice isn't talking about getting rid of poverty or tackling human trafficking and other good things like that, 00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:49.120 that we as God's people should be massively concerned about and working for. 00:14:50.360 --> 00:14:59.480 Biblical justice is primarily about God restoring things to the way that they were originally created to be. 00:14:59.480 --> 00:15:05.480 The way that this sin has so badly disrupted. 00:15:05.480 --> 00:15:12.620 This way where sin is dealt with, 00:15:13.300 --> 00:15:15.480 where wrongs are righted, 00:15:16.180 --> 00:15:18.320 where tears are white, 00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:20.480 and where hurts are healed, 00:15:20.480 --> 00:15:30.820 and where creature and creation live in harmony and live to give praise to creator. 00:15:30.820 --> 00:15:33.820 This is biblical justice. 00:15:33.820 --> 00:15:36.100 This is what God's servant is coming to do. 00:15:36.180 --> 00:15:37.720 He's coming to establish this. 00:15:37.879 --> 00:15:40.580 This is the kingdom that he's coming to inaugurate. 00:15:41.640 --> 00:15:42.780 And God loves it. power hungry dictators who demand authority by shouting. 00:16:03.019 --> 00:16:13.559 I was hearing this week that Venezuela's Hugo Chavez once spoke live to the nation on TV for eight hours without breaks. 00:16:15.740 --> 00:16:19.279 Fidel Castro similarly spoke for four and a half hours, 00:16:19.740 --> 00:16:22.100 and I'm told that Gaddafi made it to 95 minutes. 00:16:23.419 --> 00:16:24.600 Shouting at people, 00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:26.379 obey me. 00:16:26.379 --> 00:16:30.240 But how different God's servant here? 00:16:31.980 --> 00:16:33.240 He will be gentle. --> 00:16:44.939 Do you see the descriptions that Isaiah gives us here, 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:46.580 or God gives us rather through Isaiah? 00:16:46.919 --> 00:16:48.519 A bruised reed he will not
