00:00:27.760 --> 00:00:37.740 They were also words of hope in a redeemer who God would raise up to pay for the sin of God's people and turn away God's wrath. 00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:48.980 Isaiah's words in the impact that he made outlived the kings that he served and even Isaiah himself. 00:00:48.979 --> 00:00:58.000 Isaiah's words spoke directly into the spiritual needs of God's people and the cross of Jesus Christ, reaching back to the origins of a nation called Israel, who God chose to be his people. 00:02:08.479 --> 00:02:17.740 Isaiah is a bridge, a connection for those who find forgiveness in freedom in the Messiah in 2023. 00:02:17.740 --> 00:02:23.260 But also for those who knew the Messiah only as a promise. 00:02:24.760 --> 00:02:35.620 A gracious promise that one day he journey and step across this bridge. 00:04:27.379 --> 00:04:31.279 Isaiah is a bit like watching an opera. 00:04:31.879 --> 00:04:32.920 Or a symphony. 00:04:34.060 --> 00:04:35.219 Or a musical. 00:04:37.139 --> 00:04:40.939 Like these, Isaiah begins with an overture. 00:04:40.939 --> 00:04:46.100 An overture is a musical preview. 00:04:46.699 --> 00:04:52.500 It contains all, many of the melodies that are to come in the performance. 00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:56.180 The emotional movements of the story to come. 00:04:57.560 --> 00:05:00.959 We might not know why the tune sounds like that yet. 00:05:02.300 --> 00:05:07.300 But the overture gives us that feeling and the gravity of what's going to come next. 00:05:07.319 --> 00:05:08.680 Just without all the details. 00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:12.379 It opens our ears and focuses our minds. 00:05:13.160 --> 00:05:18.420 So let's listen to three melodies that we're going to hear through Isaiah. 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:22.120 In Isaiah's prophetic overture. 00:05:24.300 --> 00:05:35.040 The first melody is this intimidating and fearsome, unstoppable melody of judgment and exile. 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:37.379 God himself says, 00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:43.520 I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:48.920 God pronounces judgment after judgment. 00:05:50.220 --> 00:05:52.480 Woes on his people. 00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:59.220 He foreshadows a time of loss and pain in chapters 1 to 5. 00:06:00.020 --> 00:06:02.340 Like it's already happening to Israel. 00:06:02.340 --> 00:06:06.280 He even calls Israel by two awful names. 00:06:06.960 --> 00:06:08.500 Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:14.379 Two cities that were judged for their exceptional He sings this mournful love song. 00:07:20.300 --> 00:07:24.519 I will sing for the one I love about a song about his vineyard. 00:07:24.939 --> 00:07:27.959 My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. 00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:31.660 The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel. 00:07:31.899 --> 00:07:34.959 And the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. 00:07:35.740 --> 00:07:37.920 He looked for justice but saw bloodshed. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:42.079 For righteousness but heard cries of distress. 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:44.699 Can you hear the melody? 00:07:46.099 --> 00:07:49.079 Can you hear the main theme of this overture? 00:07:49.759 --> 00:07:50.079 It's terrifying. 00:07:53.060 --> 00:07:58.779 But interwoven with woe after woe, horror after horror, 00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:02.039 are these two sweet melodies. 00:08:02.779 --> 00:08:06.060 And as we go through Isaiah, as you read through Isaiah yourself, 00:08:06.360 --> 00:08:08.000 and as we explore it as a church, 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:10.699 I want to encourage you to be looking for these 00:08:10.699 --> 00:08:15.560 and listening for these two melodies in the symphony of Isaiah. --> 00:08:50.299 And how will God do this? 00:08:52.259 --> 00:08:58.019 How could God be leading Israel to ruin 00:08:58.019 --> 00:09:02.480 and also make them pure before him? 00:09:04.199 --> 00:09:06.259 Well, we get a glimpse of a name in this tune. 00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:08.519 In chapter four, verse two, 00:09:08.919 --> 00:09:11.539 the name of this redeemer, 00:09:11.860 --> 00:09:13.860 this one who will save, 00:09:13.939 --> 00:09:16.179 is called the branch of the Lord, 00:09:16.179 --> 00:09:18.779 one who will bring shelter and cleansing 00:09:18.779 --> 00:09:21.799 to the people of this broken, 00:09:22.939 --> 00:09:24.600 wayward vineyard. 00:09:24.600 --> 00:09:27.980 And then melody number two, 00:09:28.379 --> 00:09:32.240 after the chords crash with a crescendo 00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:37.399 and there's the empty space after in this overture. 00:09:38.300 --> 00:09:40.800 There's these ever so quiet promises 00:09:40.800 --> 00:09:43.700 of eternal hope. 00:09:43.700 --> 00:09:48.740 Isaiah 1.26 says that there will be a day 00:09:48.740 --> 00:09:50.720 where Jerusalem, 00:09:51.379 --> 00:09:52.540 the capital of Israel, 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:54.780 will be restored forever. 00:09:56.160 --> 00:09:56.900 And later, 00:09:57.660 --> 00:09:58.680 in chapter two, 00:09:59.560 --> 00:10:01.560 that every nation will gather 00:10:01.560 --> 00:10:03.640 to live for God there 00:10:03.640 --> 00:10:04.960 in joy. 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:07.420 In the last days, 00:10:07.520 --> 00:10:08.740 the mountain of the
