think the Old Testament's like old tech. 00:02:44.719 --> 00:02:47.260 It's out of date, irrelevant, and useless. 00:02:49.540 --> 00:02:55.100 The question is, what does Jesus think about the Old Testament? 00:02:55.099 --> 00:03:07.560 And how do we, His kingdom citizens, how do we take on the same mindset of Jesus towards the Old Testament? 00:03:08.419 --> 00:03:14.879 We must think about the Old Testament the way that our interpreter-in-chief, our forever king, 00:03:15.859 --> 00:03:18.919 has told us to understand the Old Testament. 00:03:19.159 --> 00:03:22.240 So just exactly how Testament actually points to me. 00:03:39.660 --> 00:03:41.500 And Jesus is never outdated. 00:03:41.900 --> 00:03:42.900 He's never irrelevant. 00:03:43.160 --> 00:03:43.980 He's never useless. 00:03:52.299 Here's the point. 00:03:54.139 --> 00:03:58.539 We need to understand the Old Testament the way that Jesus teaches us to understand the Old Testament. 00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:04.639 We need to be interpreters of the Old Testament as Jesus interpreted the Old Testament, 00:04:05.299 --> 00:04:07.060 which is essentially about Him. 00:04:08.180 --> 00:04:09.439 It's an extraordinary claim. 00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:12.659 And so in order to help you this morning, 00:04:12.840 --> 00:04:18.579 I'm going to ask and answer five questions about this passage. 00:04:20.420 --> 00:04:28.259 And Lord willing, you're going to walk away with a clearer sense of what the Old Testament is accomplishing. 00:04:30.159 --> 00:04:31.420 So question number one. 00:04:33.420 --> 00:04:37.980 Generally speaking, what did Jesus think about the Old Testament? 00:04:37.980 --> 00:04:39.420 What did Jesus think about the Old Testament? 00:04:39.959 --> 00:04:43.759 Well, He mentions the law and the prophets here in verse 17. 00:04:44.740 --> 00:04:49.240 But if you flip back to the end, towards the end of the Sermon on the Mount in 7.12, 00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:51.560 you know this as the golden rule. 00:04:52.279 --> 00:04:52.779 He says, 00:04:53.139 --> 00:04:56.480 So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. 00:04:56.600 --> 00:04:58.600 For this is the law and the prophets. 00:04:59.159 --> 00:05:02.480 So whatever Jesus thinks about the Old Testament, the law and the prophets, 00:05:02.779 --> 00:05:04.040 He has a high view of it. 36, 00:05:29.420 --> 00:05:30.939 Which is the great commandment in the law? 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:32.920 Jesus said to them, 00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.120 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:38.939 This is the great first commandment, and the second is like it. 00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:40.960 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:05:40.959 --> 00:05:45.339 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. 00:05:46.239 --> 00:05:47.899 Jesus has a high view of the Old Testament. 00:05:50.659 --> 00:05:58.459 In our passage, verse 18, we see some other truths about how Jesus viewed the Old Testament. 00:05:58.939 --> 00:06:00.459 He sees it as enduring. 00:06:02.579 --> 00:06:02.839 He says, 00:06:02.839 --> 00:06:15.859 As long as there's a heaven, as long as there's an earth, there's going to be the Old Testament. 00:06:17.899 --> 00:06:20.399 It's got a really long shelf life. 00:06:23.399 --> 00:06:31.759 The other truth that he points to is that he gets at the extent of it. 00:06:32.839 --> 00:06:36.619 There's maybe a view of the Old Testament as, 00:06:37.139 --> 00:06:42.560 Yeah, generally speaking, that's from God in kind of big picture kind of ways. 00:06:43.959 --> 00:06:45.159 But did you see what Jesus said? 00:06:46.919 --> 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:52.680 Before we talk about this little phrase, until it's all accomplished, 00:07:53.959 --> 00:08:00.639 would you just turn to your right in your New Testament to 2 Timothy 3.16? 00:08:02.379 --> 00:08:10.120 The Apostle Paul, scholars believe, made up a word to get at the very nature of the Old Testament. 00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:18.879 Paul says, all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable. 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:23.360 The Old Scripture, all Scripture he's referring to is all the Old Testament. 00:08:24.740 --> 00:08:30.699 And that English phrase, breathed out by God, is one word in the original language. 00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:39.659 And what it's getting at is the God-originating nature of every word in the Old Testament. 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:48.080 And what Paul is saying is simply kind of capturing what Jesus believed about the Old Testament. 00:08:49.460 --> 00:08:53.939 Every word has come from the mouth of God. 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:55.679 Of the Old Testament. 00:08:56.639 --> 00:08:57.519 Every word. 00:08:59.240 --> 00:09:00.100 Every word. 00:09:00.700 --> 00:09:02.360 That's what makes it enduring. 00:09:03.140 --> with the sacred writings, the Old Testament, 00:09:55.640 --> 00:10:02.980 which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 00:10:02.980 --> 00:10:06.279 Until it's all accomplished. 00:10:06.460 --> 00:10:17.480 The Old Testament is revealing God's plan for the fullness of time for all people everywhere to have a saving faith in Jesus Christ. 00:10:17.480 --> 00:10:25.399 And that is going to culminate in a moment where Jesus comes back and he makes all wrongs right. 00:10:25.800 --> 00:10:31.320 And he judges the world, separating them like sheep and the goats. 00:10:31.860 --> 00:10:38.840 And at that moment, God will have gathered all of his people from all of time to sing his praises. 00:10:38.840 --> 00:10:46.440 Jesus, this plan that he's seeking to accomplish is a big plan and it's a glory plan. 00:10:48.560 --> 00:10:55.040 And Jesus is saying that plan is made known in the Old Testament. 00:10:59.820 --> 00:11:04.400 Jesus has a very high view of the Old Testament. 00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:07.779 Because he believes it's God speaking. 00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:11.679 In fact, you can make an argument that Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, 00:11:11.959 --> 00:11:15.600 was actually there when the Old Testament was given. 00:11:20.079 --> 00:11:24.079 It's enduring down to the details. 00:11:24.740 --> 00:11:29.500 It reveals a plan that is going to find its culmination in Jesus. 00:11:31.079 --> 00:11:33.899 That's a high view of the Old Testament. 00:11:34.399 --> 00:11:36.799 How does Jesus view the Old Testament, generally speaking? 00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:37.899 Very highly. 00:11:39.259 --> 00:11:40.000 Second question. 00:11:41.279 --> 00:11:44.779 How did Jesus view his relationship to the Old Testament specifically? 00:11:46.059 --> 00:11:48.399 Specifically, there's this word fulfill. 00:11:50.379 --> 00:11:52.120 In chapter 17, we read, 00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:54.699 I have not come to abolish them, the law or the prophets, 00:11:55.500 --> 00:11:57.240 but to fulfill them. 00:11:57.319 --> 00:12:03.199 In other words, Jesus didn't come to relax the law or reduce the law or to remove the law. 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:10.140 He came to fulfill the law and the prophets and the Psalms, all of the Old Testament. 00:12:10.360 --> 00:12:11.580 He came to fulfill it. 00:12:11.640 --> 00:12:15.720 So the question becomes, how does Jesus fulfill the Old Testament? 00:12:16.560 --> 00:12:17.660 What does that mean? 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:19.020 What does that look like? 00:12:20.100 --> 00:12:23.940 And I get to tell you this morning, he fulfills it in more than one way. 00:12:23.940 --> 00:12:32.680 The first way that you think of, generally, that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament is through Old Testament predictive prophecy. 00:12:33.120 --> 00:12:37.240 Like, if you flip back to Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14, 00:12:38.560 --> 00:12:41.760 I mean, we're getting ready for the Advent season. 00:12:41.940 --> 00:12:43.580 We read this by Isaiah, 00:12:43.580 --> 00:12:55.400 And then we look at Matthew chapter 1, 00:12:56.080 --> 00:12:58.560 verses 20 through 23, 00:12:59.920 --> 00:13:00.620 and we learn this, 00:13:00.620 --> 00:13:30.600 That's just one prophecy, predictive prophecy. 00:13:30.620 --> 00:13:32.240 From a prophet. 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:37.600 Do you guys know the first predictive prophecy of the coming of Jesus? 00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:41.620 Genesis 3.15. 00:13:42.820 --> 00:13:44.940 It's actually a curse on the serpent. 00:13:46.679 --> 00:13:49.960 There's going to be a descendant of Eve that's going to crush his head. 00:13:49.960 --> 00:13:59.000 So there's this predictive prophecy in both the law and the prophets of the Old Testament, 00:13:59.100 --> 00:13:59.840 but that's just one way. 00:14:01.100 --> 00:14:04.540 There's another way that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament, 00:14:04.800 --> 00:14:06.600 and it's by way of themes, 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:11.060 or what some people call typology. 00:14:11.059 --> 00:14:13.779 It's like this. 00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:16.439 In the Old Testament, 00:14:16.679 --> 00:14:20.319 you have this sacrificial system established, 00:14:20.859 --> 00:14:24.519 where there is sinning by God's people, 00:14:24.759 --> 00:14:26.299 and then they've got a sacrifice. 00:14:26.539 --> 00:14:29.379 Blood must be shed to atone for the sin, 00:14:29.379 --> 00:14:31.580 and it happens over and over and over again. 00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:35.639 It happens all the way through the Old Testament, 00:14:36.019 --> 00:14:37.960 and when you get to the New Testament, 00:14:38.360 --> 00:14:39.620 in John chapter 2, 00:14:39.960 --> 00:14:41.100 when John sees Jesus, 00:14:41.179 --> 00:14:41.860 do you remember what he says? 00:14:42.159 --> 00:14:43.580 Behold, the Lamb of God, 00:14:43.679 --> 00:14:45.679 who comes to take away the sin of the world. 00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.959 The greatest sacrifice. 00:14:49.079 --> 00:14:54.439 Hebrews 10 talks about Jesus being the once-for-all sacrifice. 00:14:55.259 --> 00:14:58.759 There's no more need for the blood of goats and bulls, 00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:02.859 because Jesus has died once and for all. 00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:05.199 So there we have a theme, 00:15:05.319 --> 00:15:08.859 a kind of typology being kind of fulfilled in Jesus, 00:15:09.179 --> 00:15:10.659 and we have that with kingship, 00:15:10.919 --> 00:15:12.659 we have that with the priesthood, 00:15:12.899 --> 00:15:14.539 we have that with the temple, 00:15:14.539 --> 00:15:16.799 we have that with places. 00:15:17.319 --> 00:15:19.299 It is all throughout your Old Testament 00:15:19.299 --> 00:15:21.199 being fulfilled by Jesus in the New. 00:15:23.620 --> 00:15:25.899 And then there's the moral fulfillment of Jesus, 00:15:26.399 --> 00:15:27.240 of the Old Testament. 00:15:29.299 --> 00:15:30.759 I'm
