that in effect the people who make up the world, 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:53.740 they're neither neutral or good, 00:06:53.740 --> 00:06:55.560 that the people who make up the world, 00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:59.259 that we are rebels against the true God 00:06:59.259 --> 00:07:00.879 and that we, in a sense, 00:07:01.340 --> 00:07:04.699 deserve God's wrath and judgment. 00:07:06.780 --> 00:07:09.740 It's a very, very un-Canadian way of looking at the text. 00:07:09.740 --> 00:07:12.259 For many of us as Canadians, 00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:14.000 maybe we would see that the world, 00:07:14.120 --> 00:07:15.259 all of the people in the world, 00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:17.360 that they're sort of somehow neutral 00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:19.800 and maybe then, 00:07:19.900 --> 00:07:21.660 because the world is sort of neutral, 00:07:22.400 --> 00:07:24.259 maybe we want to say that 00:07:24.259 --> 00:07:27.040 Jesus has to sort of fit into this neutral world 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:28.879 and just sort of become a bit of a, 00:07:29.319 --> 00:07:31.240 maybe a bit of a guide to us 00:07:31.240 --> 00:07:33.519 because the world is a bit of good 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:34.340 and a bit of evil 00:07:34.339 --> 00:07:36.179 and overall unbalance. 00:07:36.739 --> 00:07:37.939 Well, we might, on a good day, 00:07:38.019 --> 00:07:39.379 think overall unbalance, it's good 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:41.179 and overall unbalance, it's a bad, 00:07:41.919 --> 00:07:43.399 you know, depending on how we're feeling. 00:07:43.519 --> 00:07:45.259 But that, we just sort of see the world 00:07:45.259 --> 00:07:46.359 as basically neutral, 00:07:46.479 --> 00:07:47.959 the people in the world as neutral. 00:07:48.479 --> 00:07:51.139 And so all of this talk of needing a saviour 00:07:51.139 --> 00:07:52.539 and condemning, 00:07:52.679 --> 00:07:54.719 it just sounds like it's so completely 00:07:54.719 --> 00:07:56.079 and utterly foreign and odd. 00:07:56.679 --> 00:07:57.799 And in fact, fundamentally, 00:07:57.979 --> 00:07:59.179 I think for most Canadians, 00:07:59.299 --> 00:08:00.939 at least most educated Canadians, 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:02.439 the fundamental understanding 00:08:02.439 --> 00:08:03.680 of the people of the world 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:04.839 is that the people of the world 00:08:04.839 --> 00:08:05.939 are basically good. 00:08:06.459 --> 00:08:07.579 The world is evolving. 00:08:08.259 --> 00:08:09.399 Technology is evolving. 00:08:09.579 --> 00:08:10.319 We're going to solve, 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:12.199 we're going to eventually solve cancer. 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:13.839 We're going to eventually solve AIDS. 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:16.459 We're going to eventually solve pollution. 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:17.899 We'll even eventually, 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:19.680 maybe not be able to have people live forever, 00:08:19.779 --> 00:08:21.100 but be able to have people live 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:22.659 for a 00:09:22.619 it has to be something that he does 00:09:22.619 --> 00:09:25.279 which adds a little bit of value 00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:26.799 or maybe a lot of value 00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:30.019 to a project that's already going pretty good. 00:09:31.039 --> 00:09:32.519 And in the midst of this, 00:09:32.819 --> 00:09:35.459 we have chapter 3, verse 17, 00:09:35.459 --> 00:09:37.579 which says something quite different. 00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:41.199 For God did not send his son into the world 00:09:41.199 --> 00:09:42.139 to condemn the world, 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:44.079 but to save the world through him. 00:09:44.600 --> 00:09:47.000 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, 00:09:47.439 --> 00:09:48.799 but whoever does not believe 00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:50.779 stands condemned have rebelled against God. 00:10:18.299 --> 00:10:20.819 And this rebellion doesn't just refer 00:10:20.819 --> 00:10:22.360 to street people 00:10:22.360 --> 00:10:25.200 or the people who are wildly profligate 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:25.759 in some way. 00:10:25.860 --> 00:10:28.039 It includes middle-class Canadians. 00:10:28.259 --> 00:10:30.279 It includes professors and politicians, 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:32.360 successful business people, 00:10:32.919 --> 00:10:34.300 doctors and lawyers, 00:10:34.700 --> 00:10:36.740 people who live in perfect houses 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:38.019 with perfect lawns, 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:39.300 with perfect families, 00:10:39.639 --> 00:10:41.120 are just as much rebels 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:42.519 and need the gospel 00:10:42.519 --> 00:10:44.480 as the worst street person 00:10:44.480 --> 00:10:46.100 we'll see on Rideau Street 00:10:46.100 --> 00:10:47.899 if we go down Rideau Street today. 00:10:47.899 --> 00:11:11.600 and when we continue in our rebellion, 00:11:12.120 --> 00:11:13.799 that God's response to that 00:11:13.799 --> 00:11:16.360 was not instantly just to cut us off 00:11:16.360 -->
