Amen. 00:04:33.980 --> 00:04:40.480 Now we start this portion hearing about Jesus knowing that it is incredibly dark. 00:04:40.680 --> 00:04:44.720 We're told, verse 33, from the sixth hour until the ninth hour. 00:04:44.819 --> 00:04:47.439 To translate that into modern language, 00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:51.439 we would say that's from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. 00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:54.139 Or for some of you, 1,200 to 1,500. 00:04:55.740 --> 00:04:59.399 The question here is, why is it so important? 00:04:59.480 --> 00:05:02.160 Why does it matter that there's darkness over the land 00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:05.300 as we begin Jesus' time here on the cross? 00:05:05.420 --> 00:05:08.579 And to understand that, we actually have to go back in history, 00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:11.480 in the story of God's people, of Israel, 00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:15.139 to when they were in slavery in the land of Egypt. 00:05:15.139 --> 00:05:16.939 When Israel was in slavery, 00:05:17.519 --> 00:05:19.740 you'll remember they were in slavery for 400 years, 00:05:19.879 --> 00:05:21.099 and then they were brought out, 00:05:21.180 --> 00:05:23.339 they were rescued from Egypt by God. 00:05:23.740 --> 00:05:25.759 We learn about this in the book of Exodus, 00:05:25.979 --> 00:05:27.259 which is an Old Testament book. 00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:30.300 Ex means out of, and the odos part means road. 00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:33.259 So Exodus is just the road out of, the road out of Egypt. 00:05:33.919 --> 00:05:37.139 And you'll remember that God delivers his people from Egypt, 00:05:37.259 --> 00:05:40.300 from the hand of Pharaoh, who is unwilling to let them go. 00:05:40.379 --> 00:05:41.560 His heart has been hardened. 00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:45.480 And so God performs these 10 curses on the land of Egypt. 00:05:46.379 --> 00:05:49.199 It starts out a little small, it gets worse and worse. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:51.459 And one of the worst curses, 00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:53.759 the ninth out of the 10th curse, 00:05:54.199 --> 00:05:56.620 is the curse of darkness. 00:05:57.879 --> 00:06:00.120 So over the whole land of Egypt, 00:06:00.579 --> 00:06:03.519 no one can see their hand in front of their face. 00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:05.699 And what happens then? 00:06:05.740 --> 00:06:06.660 What's the 10th curse? 00:06:07.379 --> 00:06:08.680 If you're familiar with the story, 00:06:08.680 --> 00:06:13.759 you know that the 10th curse is the death of the firstborn sons of Egypt. 00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:20.579 God's great act of redemption in the Old Testament is the Exodus. 00:06:20.840 --> 00:06:24.139 It is God delivering his people out of slavery from Egypt. 00:06:24.920 --> 00:06:28.360 The great act of redemption in the New Testament 00:06:28.360 --> 00:06:30.620 is what we're looking at right here. 00:06:30.780 --> 00:06:32.600 Jesus' death and resurrection, 00:06:33.100 --> 00:06:34.439 delivering his people, 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:36.319 not from slavery to Egypt, 00:06:36.540 --> 00:06:39.139 but delivering them from slavery to sin. 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:43.899 Why is it important then that there's darkness over the land? 00:06:44.839 --> 00:06:46.439 In the first Exodus, 00:06:47.100 --> 00:06:51.720 the curse of darkness preceded the death of the firstborn son. 00:06:51.720 --> 00:06:55.300 In the second Exodus, 00:06:55.780 --> 00:06:58.120 the same thing happens again. 00:06:59.520 --> 00:07:04.600 Darkness precedes the death of God's son. 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:09.720 Exodus is being acted out all over again, 00:07:09.800 --> 00:07:13.720 except it is even greater and more intense this time. 00:07:13.820 --> 00:07:17.660 It is not the firstborn sons of Egypt who are dying. 00:07:17.660 --> 00:07:20.700 It is God's own son who is dying. 00:07:20.699 --> 00:07:23.519 Remember in the story of the Exodus, 00:07:24.180 --> 00:07:26.360 God's people protected themselves 00:07:26.360 --> 00:07:31.539 by painting the blood of a lamb on the frames of their doors. 00:07:32.180 --> 00:07:34.099 That's where we get the term Passover. 00:07:34.519 --> 00:07:39.000 God passed over the houses that were covered by the blood of the lamb. 00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:44.599 Here we see that lamb die. 00:07:44.600 --> 00:07:47.820 Jesus is the one, 00:07:47.900 --> 00:07:49.920 the first Exodus pointed towards. 00:07:50.080 --> 00:07:54.260 He is God's great and final act of redemption for his people. 00:07:55.700 --> 00:07:58.140 And so it makes sense then that for three hours, 00:07:58.320 --> 00:08:03.340 Jesus is hanging here on the cross under the curse of darkness. 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:08.300 It also helps us understand what the darkness means. 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:13.800 The darkness here is a sign of God's judgment. 00:08:14.759 --> 00:08:21.420 And it's a sign of God's judgment specifically on the one who is hanging on the cross. 00:08:22.540 --> 00:08:24.160 In other words, 00:08:24.699 --> 00:08:33.200 Jesus for these three hours is experiencing complete separation from God. 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:41.860 Jesus during these three hours is receiving the punishment that we deserve. 00:08:42.860 --> 00:08:47.980 Jesus during these three hours is under a curse. 00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:53.580 The curse that was meant to be laid down on us. 00:08:54.980 --> 00:08:56.680 Now I want us to pause here for a second 00:08:56.680 --> 00:09:01.540 and understand the seriousness of what's happening to Jesus in this moment. 00:09:01.539 --> 00:09:06.240 It is not just that he is separated from God, 00:09:07.159 --> 00:09:12.419 that he's not experiencing the love and favor and smile of God that he's used to. 00:09:12.819 --> 00:09:16.480 It is also that he is experiencing the wrath of God. 00:09:18.279 --> 00:09:21.199 As darkness falls on the land, 00:09:23.319 --> 00:09:26.860 Jesus is undergoing the purpose for which he came. 00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:29.599 Jesus is receiving the punishment, 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:32.840 the wrath of God that is due to us. 00:09:34.899 --> 00:09:35.340 Of course, 00:09:35.399 --> 00:09:39.639 the separation itself would feel like hell. torment of its loss. 00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:52.040 Which gives us a principle here. 00:09:52.120 --> 00:09:53.600 The deeper the relationship, 00:09:54.700 --> 00:09:56.500 the greater the pain of
