studying through it. 00:00:35.679 --> 00:00:44.700 We're in the fourth quarter, so to speak, which reminds me, two years ago when we started, 00:00:45.560 --> 00:00:46.760 I brought a football. 00:00:48.219 --> 00:00:53.180 And we started out where Vince Lombardi does every year with his team. 00:00:53.540 --> 00:00:56.579 Ladies and gentlemen, this is a football. 00:00:56.579 --> 00:01:51.900 But in particular, that's my heart as we come back to finish the gospel of Luke. 00:01:52.700 --> 00:02:03.200 We've said Luke is the historical, paradoxical, upside-down, life-changing, true story of Jesus. 00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:09.199 And as we've gone through it, we've seen, just to review a little bit and catch us all up, 00:02:09.719 --> 00:02:16.000 Jesus announced by angels to shepherds as good news of great joy for all people. 00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:18.140 Now, that's who he is. 00:02:18.640 --> 00:02:24.840 Jesus is good news and brings a message of good news all through see the king himself engaging not merely shepherds, but many other social and religious outcasts of his day. 00:02:41.719 --> 00:02:47.120 Valuing women, including Gentiles, loving enemies. Authoritative and humble in his words. 00:03:04.560 --> 00:03:09.219 This is the Jesus that Luke wants his readers to get a taste of. 00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:12.460 He's unlike anyone else they've ever known, Luke is saying. 00:03:14.159 --> 00:03:18.759 And now, we're headed to the most important part of the whole story. 00:03:18.759 --> 00:03:27.120 Jesus has been telling us for several chapters now that what must happen, what has to happen, he must go to the cross. 00:03:28.219 --> 00:03:32.479 Suffer and be rejected and be killed and then rise from the dead. 00:03:32.819 --> 00:03:37.060 And Jesus is laser focused on this ultimate mission, isn't he? 00:03:38.060 --> 00:03:39.739 He sets a course for Jerusalem. 00:03:40.219 --> 00:03:43.979 Fixes his gaze on his sacrificial death in our place. 00:03:43.979 --> 00:03:46.379 And he won't be deterred from it. 00:03:46.459 --> 00:03:49.139 Priority number one, Jesus says. 00:03:49.739 --> 00:03:52.739 All the value systems he's turned upside down. 00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:56.579 All the undeserving outsiders he's welcomed in. 00:03:56.959 --> 00:03:59.560 All the remarkable things he's done and said. 00:03:59.879 --> 00:04:05.620 All of them hinge on his sacrificial death in the place of sinners. 00:04:06.019 --> 00:04:09.239 And his living again to offer them new life. 00:04:10.439 --> 00:04:12.719 That's his tomb. 00:05:04.339 --> 00:05:11.219 Just where we left off a few months ago, King Jesus has been teaching us about his kingdom. 00:05:11.619 --> 00:05:14.359 Particularly in light of eternal matters. giving up hope, feeling alone. 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:19.500 That's one reason we stop praying sometimes, isn't it? 00:11:20.820 --> 00:11:26.860 We talked a few weeks ago about the fact that we typically don't pray because we don't feel like we need to. 00:11:26.860 --> 00:11:34.720 And painfully, we admitted, and at least I did and suggested, maybe you should, 00:11:35.320 --> 00:11:41.840 that a lot of times we don't feel that need because we're not actually on God's mission that we really need Him for. 00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:45.759 We're just about what we want, and so we don't really need to pray. 00:11:46.580 --> 00:11:50.539 Well, in this passage, Jesus is urging us to pray. 00:11:50.539 --> 00:11:53.659 In fact, to keep praying. 00:11:53.659 --> 00:12:02.079 But He's addressing 00:12:58.219 Maybe God's people awaiting the promised deliverer, the Messiah, for hundreds of years and not seeing it happen felt that. 00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:05.079 Maybe we, as we long for His second coming and for Him to make all things right the way He promised, 00:13:05.199 --> 00:13:08.120 maybe we feel that same thing. 00:13:08.120 --> 00:13:18.519 One of my very favorite parts of this whole passage is that Jesus understands that losing heart. 00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:22.519 This passage doesn't say, and this is what you might expect, 00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:23.659 it doesn't say, 00:13:23.659 --> 00:13:29.719 Jesus heard that His disciples sometimes lost heart and quit praying, even fell asleep. 00:13:30.459 --> 00:13:34.159 So He scolded them and said, don't ever lose heart again. 00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:36.059 Is that what we read? 00:13:37.439 --> 00:13:38.039 No. 00:13:38.039 --> 00:13:46.620 Jesus, knowing that we would face difficulty and struggles and our own weaknesses, 00:13:48.139 --> 00:13:52.659 knowing we would be tempted to give up hope, to quit praying, to lose heart, 00:13:53.019 --> 00:13:58.519 says, let me tell you a story to encourage your disciples that prayer is all about relationship. 00:15:05.399 --> 00:15:09.120 Why should we keep praying when nothing seems to get any better? 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.360 Doesn't make sense, right?
