redemption. 00:02:38.399 --> 00:02:43.179 And so one of the main ways that I think about Genesis is I think that it's accurate, and 00:02:43.179 --> 00:02:45.099 I think that what the Bible says is true. 00:02:45.839 --> 00:02:51.599 I also think that in this overarching story where you kind of go from the vast to zooming 00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:56.939 in very quickly on a family and a person, Jesus, you skip a lot of details. 00:02:56.939 --> 00:03:01.699 And that doesn't necessarily mean the details aren't important in this particular instance 00:03:01.699 --> 00:03:06.979 because we use them to learn things about the world that we are basically given to Stuart. 00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:12.240 And so for this reason, I get really excited, and I think that this is worth studying. of the devices and things that we build and the techniques that we develop 00:03:32.379 --> 00:03:38.740 in trying to answer these very basic questions get used in other places, whether it's medicine I also think that it provides insight into the nature of God, who is the creator, just in 00:04:05.100 --> 00:04:10.320 terms of glory and majesty and bigness, as well as attention to detail and they're more specific than just, you know, things started, things spread out, things heated up, things cooled down. 00:09:06.740 --> 00:09:14.300 And they're starting to ask questions like, well, okay, in particle physics, if you produce a particle, you also produce as any particle. 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:16.100 And they get produced in equal numbers. 00:09:16.540 --> 00:09:21.660 And so if that's the case, they should see each other, annihilate, you get energy, and then everything, you shouldn't really have any structure. 00:09:21.820 --> 00:09:24.800 We shouldn't really be standing here because everything that we see is made out of mass. 00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:28.979 So why is it that most of the observable matter in the universe is actually matter? 00:09:29.399 --> 00:09:30.519 mentioned, when you look out at the sky, a lot of times you, well, there have been repeatable. 00:09:52.440 --> 00:10:01.620 And there's a lot of cumulative and very strong evidence that I'll describe you zoom in very quickly from thinking about these big picture questions to trying to answer one thing. 00:10:33.659 --> 00:10:40.100 And you build a lot of really high tech and elaborate equipment world that we live in and that we deal with every day. 00:10:47.100 --> 00:10:54.559 So among the first questions, so the first question about the matter, antimatter asymmetry of the universe, one of the ways that we're trying to get at it is understanding a particle called the neutrino. 00:10:55.079 --> 00:10:56.240 We've seen neutrinos. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:15.860 We've seen a lot of experiments in the last couple of decades that I don't, unfortunately, have time to get into. 00:11:15.980 --> 00:11:16.840 You can ask me afterwards. 00:11:16.840 --> 00:11:25.139 But those experiments are able to demonstrate that they have mass, and they've been able to demonstrate that they have mass splitting. 00:11:25.440 --> 00:11:31.960 But they don't really tell us what the absolute scale of the mass is, and they don't really tell us whether the neutrino might actually be its own antiparticle. 00:11:32.780 --> 00:11:39.420 It actually has a special role in the standard model because it's neutral, and it's a particle called a fermion. 00:11:39.419 --> 00:11:50.879 And if it is its own antiparticle, then that could give us a clue into, like, maybe how matter antimatter asymmetry could have started, maybe some other symmetries that are in place that we haven't really developed before. 00:11:51.799 --> 00:12:01.259 So the way that we actually chose to look for this in the experiments that I work for is usually there's an experiment called two-neutrino double beta decay, 00:12:01.259 --> 00:12:12.259 where this nucleus that is specifically able to decay a particular way usually gives off two electrons when it decays and two neutrinos. 00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:16.080 If the neutrino is its own antiparticle, you won't see the two neutrinos. 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:25.720 And instead of seeing, if you think about how much energy you measure by watching these detectors over time and given some certain amount, 00:12:25.799 --> 00:12:28.519 you expect to see a certain number of particles at every energy. 00:12:28.519 --> 00:12:31.120 So we generally, like, just plot this out. 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:38.799 If two neutrino double, we have seen two neutrino double beta decay in a lot of different elements, a lot being kind of a relative number. 00:12:40.220 --> 00:12:47.340 But if neutrino less double beta decay exists, what we'd end up seeing is, like, all the energy going to the electrons, 00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:53.120 and it would give a little peek at the end point of the sort of spectrum that we draw out. 00:12:53.539 --> 00:12:55.840 And the issue is that this is a pretty big background. 00:12:55.840 --> 00:12:57.480 No one's seen this yet. 00:12:57.860 --> 00:13:01.820 And so we have to really understand this, which we actually think we do pretty well, 00:13:02.160 --> 00:13:07.820 and then have a really huge detector and wait a rather long time to see if this peak develops. 00:13:08.200 --> 00:13:09.560 So far, no one has seen anything. 00:13:10.080 --> 00:13:13.519 The experiment that I work for is actually located in Italy underground. 00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:26.000 And it's basically an array of crystals of that particular type of element located in this huge dill fridge that gets cold to about ten thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. 00:13:26.720 --> 00:13:29.279 And so we're currently running and still working on this, 00:13:29.340 --> 00:13:33.600 but this is an example of one of the things that we're doing to kind of look for that particular question. 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:42.340 Another one that I actually have spent quite some time on in a couple of different experiments is this search for dark matter. 00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:47.720 So this slide is kind of intended to give an overview picture of why we really, 00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:51.300 over a long time, people ignored even the idea of dark matter. 00:13:51.680 --> 00:13:57.379 And it came back up about 30 years after someone first started, like, trying to get people to pay attention to it. 00:13:57.379 --> 00:14:09.019 And then it kind of became unavoidable because the issue is that when you compare astronomical observations to basically some of the calculations from two different types of observations, 00:14:09.159 --> 00:14:09.700 they don't match. 00:14:10.100 --> 00:14:20.539 One of the first places that came up was if you basically measure the amount of light that you can see from a galaxy in a telescope or, you know, telescope basically, 00:14:20.539 --> 00:14:28.379 and you kind of plot that out as a function of, like, the distance from the center of the galaxy. 00:14:30.139 --> 00:14:34.699 And then if you kind of predict what you would expect to see based on general relativity, 00:14:34.699 --> 00:14:41.279 which has been tested over and over and over again and works as well as anything that we've had been able to develop, 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:49.159 the mass that you see when you're dealing with general relativity should just kind of fall off. 00:14:49.159 --> 00:14:54.279 But when we measure the amount of mass, oh, sorry, actually, I should have explained a little bit more, 00:14:54.659 --> 00:14:58.579 the amount of light that you see, but then you also measure the speed of the stars going, 00:14:59.019 --> 00:15:05.959 so the amount of light that you see from the whole galaxy and then the speed of the stars that you measure as you go out from the center of the galaxy should match. 00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:11.079 And you should be able to predict what that curve looks like as you go out, and that's the one that should flatten out. 00:15:11.639 --> 00:15:18.179 And if you measure how much mass is in the galaxy and you measure the speed of the stars moving at the edge of the galaxy, 00:15:18.179 --> 00:15:23.639 apparently there's not enough mass to keep the stars on the edge of the galaxy bound together. 00:15:24.179 --> 00:15:26.759 And so this is something that's been seen over and over again. 00:15:27.839 --> 00:15:32.000 Again, people ignored it, and it's been seen not just in galaxies but in clusters of galaxies. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:38.799 And, again, what you end up seeing is that the amount of mass that we can actually visibly measure 00:15:38.799 --> 00:15:45.539 is just not large enough to hold the things on the very edge of these systems to the system. 00:15:45.539 --> 00:15:49.319 And so the question is, well, how are they being bound? 00:15:49.559 --> 00:15:50.559 What's this extra mass? 00:15:50.699 --> 00:15:54.799 So a lot of people have chosen the path of either saying there must be more mass, 00:15:54.959 --> 00:15:56.939 or maybe we have to change the rules of physics. 00:15:57.500 --> 00:16:01.480 Changing the rules of physics is a really big deal, and it has to work everywhere. 00:16:02.219 --> 00:16:08.879 And so far the people who have tried to go along that route haven't been able to demonstrate as strongly that that's the way to go. 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:13.000 And as I mentioned, the rules that they're trying to change have been tested over and over again. 00:16:13.820 --> 00:16:17.600 And so the idea is, okay, well, we know we don't understand some stuff from particle physics. 00:16:17.720 --> 00:16:23.360 Maybe there's new particles that we haven't seen yet that are contributing to this --> 00:16:32.019 There's also things like if you measure the amount that light bends around huge masses. 00:16:32.019 --> 00:16:37.480 So this is called, like, X-ray measurements coming from faraway galaxies and faraway stars. 00:16:38.139 --> 00:16:51.039 And then you also measure sort of – so that's where you get – so this is a false color image that basically is showing sort of the concentration of where you would expect the mass to be. 00:16:51.419 --> 00:16:58.860 But then you also have, like, a lot of heat coming from the center of this galaxy, which is where most of – so these are the false color images. 00:16:58.860 --> 00:17:01.980 These are the X-ray images, and they mismatch. 00:17:02.240 --> 00:17:06.500 And these are basically what this illustrates is, like, two huge masses moving against each other. 00:17:07.059 --> 00:17:11.759 The sort of normal matter is rubbing against itself and heating up. 00:17:12.059 --> 00:17:17.140 And then you have this portion that just seems to be going through without even seeing itself. 00:17:17.779 --> 00:17:18.860 And so this is another indication. 00:17:18.980 --> 00:17:22.680 Maybe this is some weird type of matter that doesn't interact with regular matter strongly. 00:17:23.140 --> 00:17:27.279 There's other ways that we kind of are also able to kind of pick these things out. 00:17:27.279 --> 00:17:30.480 There's – remember that causing microwave background that I mentioned? 00:17:30.819 --> 00:17:41.440 You can look at the fluctuations that come from this and see sort of, like, at different length scales how much it fluctuates. 00:17:41.519 --> 00:17:50.119 And this tells you important things about how early you could have certain amounts of mass and what would probably have happened to the universe at that point. 00:17:50.119 --> 00:17:58.959 And this indicates the need for some extra component early in the universe so that regular matter could start clumping together early enough to form galaxies. 00:17:59.559 --> 00:18:08.919 You also have things like measuring the abundances of light elements in the early universe and constraints that you can place on that from a completely different area of physics. 00:18:09.659 --> 00:18:11.559 And you can only tweak that so much. 00:18:11.559 --> 00:18:17.240 And so a lot of these things kind of go into looking for this picture of the fact that dark matter can exist. 00:18:17.379 --> 00:18:21.399 And then, as I mentioned, you know, we know that we're missing something for particle physics. 00:18:21.619 --> 00:18:25.960 There are all these theories that say, well, maybe there's this other symmetry or maybe this other thing is true. 00:18:26.480 --> 00:18:30.019 These are some particles that would arise from that that we would not have been able to see yet. 00:18:30.019 --> 00:18:33.019 But if we build a detector, maybe we could find them because we know what we're looking for now. 00:18:33.599 --> 00:18:35.799 So that's an for dark matter work in a couple of different ways. 00:18:44.899 --> 00:18:51.559 One of them is another set of really cold crystals where you're looking for a particle to come in and scatter from the nucleus and keep going. 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:53.279 Also located deep underground. 00:18:53.839 --> 00:18:58.980 Another one counts in the fact that maybe the dark matter does interact with at least light. 00:18:59.919 --> 00:19:04.740 And you can get it to convert two photons in a really strong magnetic field. 00:19:04.740 --> 00:19:07.160 And then we build a different type of detector to look captured and going into Babylon, 00:24:28.859 --> 00:24:35.139 but then being selected from amongst their peers as people who were able to be taught the language and the tongue of the Chaldeans
