free passage to the new country. 00:04:01.400 --> 00:04:05.480 But he has to work as a slave, as an indentured servant for seven years. 00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:10.860 And at the end of that time, his hard work earns for him redemption. 00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.100 He's released of that bondage. 00:04:13.099 --> 00:04:18.560 America is defined by an immigrant work ethic. 00:04:18.680 --> It's King David. 00:06:04.379 --> 00:06:05.620 We know David's story. 00:06:06.379 --> 00:06:07.500 Praise God it came from him. 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:12.579 If it came from someone like Daniel, you know, or Ezra or someone very admirable, Joseph, 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:16.620 I would have a hard time believing that this could also be for me, but it comes from David. 00:06:16.920 --> 00:06:18.319 So let's take comfort in that. 00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:27.819 Psalm 110 that we just read is the most quoted or alluded to psalm in all of the New Testament. 00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:34.240 So do you see the New Testament authors by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit are pointing back and saying there's significance here. 00:06:34.660 --> 00:06:35.579 Pay attention to this. 00:06:35.579 --> beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the question I invite you to contemplate today is this. 00:06:52.379 --> 00:06:55.199 What determines your redemption? 00:06:56.659 --> 00:06:59.399 What determines your redemption? 00:07:00.579 --> 00:07:03.439 There's not a more important question you could think about for an hour. 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:05.699 Everything's at stake. 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:08.860 What determines to define redemption? 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:14.560 What determines whether you are pardoned from the penalties of God's violated law? 00:07:15.459 --> 00:07:20.300 What determines whether you are ransomed from your bondage to sin? 00:07:20.439 --> 00:07:21.860 You need to know the answer to this. 00:07:21.860 --> 00:07:27.420 So my first point for you is this. 00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:35.840 It pleased our triune God to express his eternal decree by way of covenant. 00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:39.819 That's the language of our confession of faith. 00:07:39.819 --> 00:07:42.719 It pleased the Lord to condescend. 00:07:43.019 --> 00:07:49.479 As Ryan put it in Sunday school, it's like God stoops down and he expresses this to us by way of covenant. 00:07:50.819 --> 00:07:52.759 So look again at the heading of this psalm. 00:07:52.859 --> 00:07:54.179 It's Psalm 110 verse 1. 00:07:54.259 --> 00:07:56.059 We're told it's a psalm of David. 00:07:56.559 --> 00:07:59.039 You got to keep the characters correctly in your mind here. 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:01.000 So David's the one writing this. 00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:03.660 And the first words say this. 00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:04.780 The Lord. 00:08:05.080 --> 00:08:05.780 That's Yahweh. 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:06.340 Jehovah. 00:08:06.480 --> 00:08:07.480 That's the God of Israel. 00:08:07.640 --> 00:08:10.520 So David's beginning this psalm by declaring God's name. 00:08:11.120 --> 00:08:11.620 Yahweh. 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:13.000 That's one of the characters. 00:08:13.500 --> 00:08:15.160 David's the human author writing it. 00:08:16.180 --> 00:08:18.240 Yahweh says to my Lord. 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:19.620 The great King David. 00:08:19.700 --> 00:08:23.520 The one who had all these messianic promises attached to his name and his line. 00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:29.079 That great King David has a Lord that's other than Yahweh. 00:08:29.240 --> 00:08:30.199 What's going on here? 00:08:33.579 --> 00:08:37.259 This isn't only complicated or hard for us if we read it like that. 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:40.379 This was hard for the Jews when Christ walked on the earth. 00:08:40.779 --> 00:08:46.439 In Matthew 22 verse 42 and in the other gospels, Jesus takes them to this. 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:48.319 He says, oh teachers of the law, look here. 00:08:50.059 --> 00:08:52.039 Whose son is the Christ? 00:08:52.039 --> 00:08:55.159 Christ means the anointed one, the promised Messiah. 00:08:56.439 --> 00:09:00.699 If then David calls him Lord, how is he David's son? 00:09:02.099 --> 00:09:07.259 Jesus is basically saying, oh, you masters of the law, come back and look at Psalm 110. 00:09:07.659 --> 00:09:08.939 Look at all of the old covenant. 00:09:09.719 --> 00:09:11.240 I want you to study this. 00:09:12.199 --> 00:09:13.439 And it silences them. 00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:15.139 They don't have any ways of explaining it. 00:09:15.639 --> 00:09:18.360 Christ had to be that full revelation to show what's going on. 00:09:19.339 --> 00:09:20.959 So who are the parties here? 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:24.759 Well, one is the Lord, Yahweh, God, the God of Israel. 00:09:24.980 --> 00:09:27.019 And he says to David's Lord. 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:32.240 And Jesus is revealing in the new covenant, I am David's Lord. 00:09:32.700 --> 00:09:34.400 Yes, I am from the line of David. 00:09:34.680 --> 00:09:36.220 I am the son of David. 00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:37.680 I will sit on the throne of David. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:40.740 I will be the king over all of God's people. 00:09:41.280 --> 00:09:43.000 But I'm also David's Lord. 00:09:43.900 --> 00:09:47.780 Outside of time, I'm the one that David got somehow a glimpse. 00:09:47.779 --> 00:09:50.740 And this is how that revelation came out on the page. 00:09:51.740 --> 00:09:57.879 So we need to now walk through this psalm with that correct New Testament interpretation that Jesus gave us. 00:09:58.379 --> 00:10:01.740 We need to read this psalm as father in dialogue with son. 00:10:02.699 --> 00:10:06.559 God the father in dialogue with God the son in eternity past. 00:10:06.679 --> 00:10:08.059 Before Jesus took on a body. 00:10:08.059 --> 00:10:10.639 Are you still with us? 00:10:12.139 --> 00:10:13.459 This is so beautiful. 00:10:13.599 --> 00:10:16.179 It's so beautiful because this is what Jesus comes to reveal. 00:10:17.779 --> 00:10:24.339 So the father says to the son, I will promise you so many things that we're going to walk through. 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:26.859 But you got to ask to, okay, hold on. 00:10:26.860 --> 00:10:33.100 Your first point was that it pleased our triune God to express his eternal decree by way of covenant. 00:10:33.240 --> 00:10:33.820 I heard father. 00:10:33.899 --> 00:10:34.399 I heard son. 00:10:34.680 --> 00:10:35.639 Where's the Holy Spirit? 00:10:36.419 --> 00:10:41.919 Well, in Sunday school, we're seeing all these other places where we can bring in what God has revealed. 00:10:42.100 --> 00:10:44.539 So one example are the servant songs. 00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:46.960 One of those is Isaiah 42.1. 00:10:47.800 --> 00:10:50.000 God says, behold my servant. 00:10:50.360 --> 00:10:54.720 So that's God the father referring to his son as a servant in this covenant. 00:10:54.720 --> 00:10:56.540 Whom I uphold. 00:10:57.040 --> 00:10:59.340 My chosen one in whom my soul delights. 00:10:59.720 --> 00:11:03.480 That's the language of the father describing his son who would become a servant. 00:11:04.560 --> 00:11:08.279 And he says, I have put my spirit upon him. 00:11:09.560 --> 00:11:14.500 Isaiah 61.1 says, the spirit of the Lord God is upon me. 00:11:14.560 --> 00:11:16.160 Now it's the son declaring it. 00:11:17.080 --> 00:11:19.560 Because the Lord has anointed me. 00:11:20.540 --> 00:11:22.399 So the spirit of God is everywhere. 00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:23.600 God is one. 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:25.399 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 00:11:26.120 --> 00:11:34.159 Covenanting together is the language God has given us to understand what the father promised the son and sealed by the spirit. 00:11:35.579 --> who never lies promised the hope of eternal life when? 00:11:46.120 --> 00:11:47.920 Before the ages began. 00:11:48.680 --> 00:11:51.240 This is when God promises the hope of eternal life. 00:11:52.360 --> 00:11:53.140 When does it happen? 00:11:53.240 --> 00:11:54.500 2 Timothy 1.9. 00:11:55.060 --> 00:11:59.280 God's own purpose and grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus when? 00:11:59.720 --> 00:12:01.680 Before the ages began. 00:12:02.379 --> 00:12:08.200 So this inter-Trinitarian covenant, it takes place before the ages began according to scripture. 00:12:08.200 --> 00:12:13.740 What can we call this intra-Trinitarian dialogue before time began? 00:12:14.460 --> 00:12:20.700 Well, the Bible metaphorically calls this the covenant because he says, look at verse 4 of Psalm 110. 00:12:21.140 --> 00:12:21.960 Verse 4 he says, 00:12:22.400 --> 00:12:25.379 The Lord has sworn he will not repent. 00:12:25.780 --> 00:12:27.040 The Lord makes an oath. 00:12:27.340 --> 00:12:29.220 That's covenantal language. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:32.879 So God calls this an oath-bound promise. 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:36.259 It's a commitment with legal sanctions. 00:12:39.480 --> 00:12:44.019 In church history, they've come to describe it as the covenant of redemption. 00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:49.740 And it's helpful for us to continue using the same terms that the church has used over the centuries 00:12:49.740 --> 00:12:52.340 because we're in dialogue with the larger church. 00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:56.159 We're understanding it in the same way that those who have gone Fesco I think is helpful. 00:12:59.559 --> 00:13:01.100 What is the covenant of redemption? 00:13:01.100 --> 00:13:06.100 He says it's the pre-temporal, before time, intra-Trinitarian. 00:13:06.340 --> 00:13:07.580 There's Father, Son, and Spirit. 00:13:08.279 --> 00:13:12.360 Oath-bound promise to redeem a people in Christ. 00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:15.940 That's what the covenant of redemption is. 00:13:17.620 --> 00:13:19.100 I just want to comfort you. 00:13:19.340 --> 00:13:23.980 The fact that God's plan to redeem us is before the ages began. 00:13:24.620 --> 00:13:27.920 And it's attached to God Himself, Father, Son, and Spirit. 00:13:28.279 --> 00:13:29.700 And God does not change. 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:30.620 God is immutable. 00:13:31.100 --> 00:13:33.080 This is grounds eternal. 00:13:45.500 --> 00:13:50.620 If the divine decrees were not eternal, God would be changeable and imperfect. 00:13:51.020 --> 00:13:51.980 So it's impossible. 00:13:52.540 --> 00:13:55.040 God has decreed to redeem His people. 00:13:55.039 --> 00:13:56.579 And it will happen. 00:13:57.719 --> 00:14:00.719 So brothers and sisters, take comfort in this first point. 00:14:01.819 --> 00:14:05.719 God decreed to redeem you from all eternity. 00:14:06.439 --> 00:14:08.719 And He bound up this promise in Himself. 00:14:09.379 --> 00:14:10.579 And God is immutable. 00:14:11.500 --> 00:14:12.959 You are secure. 00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:19.679 It pleased our triune God to express His eternal decree by way of covenant. 00:14:19.679 --> 00:14:23.139 So now I want to walk through what is this covenant. 00:14:23.379 --> 00:14:24.319 What did God promise? 00:14:24.519 --> 00:14:25.059 What's in it? 00:14:26.039 --> 00:14:27.000 This is our second point. 00:14:27.120 --> 00:14:27.559 Number two. 00:14:27.879 --> 00:14:33.919 In the covenant of redemption, the Father promised the Son victory over His enemies. 00:14:34.599 --> 00:14:37.139 Let's see the rest of verse 1 and verse 2. 00:14:37.139 --> 00:14:39.860 The Father says to the Son, 00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:46.080 You will sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool. 00:14:46.639 --> 00:14:53.519 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion to rule in the midst of your enemies. 00:14:54.379 --> 00:14:57.139 So for David, this language is so loaded. 00:14:58.360 --> 00:15:00.159 You know, Zion was not even part of the kingdom. 00:15:00.360 --> 00:15:05.399 I mean, he had to go as a scrappy soldier with Saul as a disgraceful king before him. 00:15:05.399 --> 00:15:09.959 And they had to conquer Zion, take the hill, and establish this as the fortress of God. 00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:12.059 And here's where the temple would be built. 00:15:12.539 --> 00:15:15.500 So from here we would have the office of king and priest. 00:15:15.939 --> 00:15:16.899 And God would rule. 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:21.559 And in David's mind, this is a promise for someone from the line of David to be there, 00:15:21.919 --> 00:15:23.399 ruling as a king and a priest. 00:15:24.659 --> 00:15:28.159 And that God Himself promises to make all of the enemies, 00:15:28.259 --> 00:15:31.100 all those who want to oppose the theocracy of God, 00:15:31.100 --> 00:15:35.920 He will make them a footstool under the feet of this kingly priest. 00:15:36.700 --> 00:15:37.860 What a glorious promise. 00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:44.420 Let's cut this diamond that we have in these verses with more diamond, 00:15:44.540 --> 00:15:45.560 more parts of the scripture. 00:15:46.659 --> 00:15:49.159 So here we have the Father saying to the Son, 00:15:50.600 --> 00:15:53.820 Son, you will go on a mission for me. 00:15:53.820 --> 00:15:56.000 The Son says, 00:15:56.140 --> 00:15:59.860 Father, I will go to the world to do your will. 00:16:01.060 --> 00:16:06.000 Notice how Jesus describes this mission in Matthew 13, verse 38. 00:16:06.600 --> 00:16:07.280 Jesus said, 00:16:07.840 --> 00:16:10.160 This field is the world. 00:16:10.800 --> 00:16:12.640 The good seed is the sons of the kingdom. 00:16:13.180 --> 00:16:15.120 The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 00:16:15.140 --> 00:16:16.960 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. 00:16:17.640 --> 00:16:19.840 The harvest is at the end of the age, 00:16:20.060 --> 00:16:21.460 and the reapers are the angels. 00:16:21.460 --> 00:16:24.000 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, 00:16:24.460 --> 00:16:27.940 so it will be at the end of the age. 00:16:29.500 --> 00:16:34.259 The world is described as this field that belongs to In this mission field, 00:16:42.040 --> 00:16:43.879 you have your people that will be like the wheat. 00:16:43.980 --> 00:16:45.340 You're going to harvest them out of the world. 00:16:45.620 --> 00:16:47.180 And there are others that will oppose you. 00:16:47.240 --> 00:16:48.000 They will hate you. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:49.259 And for them, 00:16:49.700 --> 00:16:52.419 they will be cut and
