Scripture says 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.879 about Christ as the sustainer. 00:03:16.879 --> 00:03:20.039 You know, we have been created with intentionality. 00:03:20.039 --> 00:03:22.599 We are made in the image of God. 00:03:22.599 --> 00:03:28.120 We're created with purpose and with God-given potential. 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:32.120 We have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, 00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:37.199 by the atoning sacrifice, the Word that became flesh. 00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:40.000 And the same God who made us, 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 the same God who sent his son, Jesus, to redeem us, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:48.239 will sustain us and hold us in his arms. 00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:50.560 And no matter what we go through, 00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:54.240 no matter what trial or tribulation life throws at us, 00:03:54.240 --> 00:03:58.480 no matter what war, rumor of war is happening in the world, 00:03:58.480 --> 00:04:02.680 we are protected by our Lord, our God. 00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:04.280 He will never leave us. 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:06.640 He will never abandon us. 00:04:06.640 --> 00:04:11.240 For Christ will sustain us all the days of our life. first question I have for you that comes on the slide 00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:07.840 here is, is there anything to fear in knowing the Lord? 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:12.159 I want you to think about that question as we go forth today. 00:06:12.159 --> 00:06:13.879 I was mentioning earlier that we are all 00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:16.399 created in the image of God with intentionality, 00:06:16.399 --> 00:06:19.399 with God given potential, and with purpose. 00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:23.599 Christ was there at the foundation of the world. 00:06:23.599 --> 00:06:26.759 God sent his son as the sacrificial lamb who 00:06:26.759 --> 00:06:30.159 was slain, the atoning sacrifice. 00:06:30.159 --> 00:06:34.919 Christ fulfilled so many prophecies in the Old Testament 00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:39.879 by his birth, his life, his ministry, his death, 00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:43.600 and his resurrection on the third day. 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:46.199 The Lord provides salvation to all who 00:06:46.199 --> 00:06:50.200 believe in the Son, Jesus, the Christ. 00:06:50.200 --> 00:06:53.360 Christ is the Redeemer, as we have learned. 00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:56.120 And it is Christ who is the sustainer. 00:06:56.120 --> 00:06:59.639 It is Christ who holds things together. 00:06:59.639 --> 00:07:03.800 God takes care of his own. 00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:06.639 As we are saved by grace through faith in him, 00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:08.800 we are sustained. 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:12.800 And I'm speaking of the sustenance of Christ. 00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:14.480 What matters the most in this life 00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:19.439 is that you find Jesus Christ and that you believe in him. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:23.879 Do you realize that you are secure when you believe in him? 00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:28.000 Do you realize there's a peace that surpasses all understanding? 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.400 Do you realize that there is joy and comfort that 00:07:30.400 --> 00:07:32.759 comes from knowing the Lord? 00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:37.319 I speak not of just knowing about God. 00:07:37.319 --> 00:07:41.360 I speak of knowing him. 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:45.399 Knowing God is different than knowing of God. 00:07:45.399 --> 00:07:48.560 I can know Tom Cruise. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:51.159 I can know of Tom Cruise. 00:07:51.159 --> 00:07:52.759 But do you actually know Tom Cruise? 00:07:52.759 --> 00:07:55.360 And I'm not saying God's Tom Cruise here. 00:07:55.360 --> 00:07:57.399 What I am saying is there's a difference 00:07:57.399 --> 00:08:02.919 between knowing of someone and actually knowing someone. 00:08:02.919 --> 00:08:06.759 And so ask yourself, do you know of God? 00:08:06.759 --> 00:08:08.759 How about knowing God? 00:08:08.759 --> 00:08:11.479 There's a fundamental difference there. 00:08:11.479 --> 00:08:15.839 I speak of having the saving knowledge to believe in him. 00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:19.039 It is in him that we are saved, and it is in him 00:08:19.039 --> 00:08:20.599 that we are secure. 00:08:20.599 --> 00:08:23.279 In your notes, you'll see there's a marker in there 00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:26.439 for John chapter 10, verse 28, where 00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:31.600 it says where Christ is saying, I give them eternal life, 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:35.120 and they will never perish, and no one 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:38.200 will snatch them out of my hand. 00:08:38.200 --> 00:08:39.679 And I love that language, right? 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:43.559 No one will take you out of Christ's hand. 00:08:43.559 --> 00:08:46.120 What beautiful language that is. 00:08:46.120 --> 00:08:49.679 And we learn so much today. 00:08:49.679 --> 00:08:52.559 Don't we get discouraged by the world today? 00:08:52.559 --> 00:08:54.519 Don't we get discouraged by the news 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:59.960 and hearing about wars and the rumors of wars? 00:08:59.960 --> 00:09:01.120 The world is changing. 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:05.919 It seems like every day, almost by the hour, right? 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:08.319 It seems like the world has just gone mad, 00:09:08.319 --> 00:09:10.720 as we've talked about before. 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:14.039 And there's fear that's being spread in the news. 00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:18.039 There's fear that's being spread on social media. 00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:21.759 But going to our verses, I want us 00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:24.720 to remember that Christ will sustain us, 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:27.759 that Christ is the firm foundation. 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:31.080 He is the solid rock on which we build our lives. 00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:34.919 He is the anchor for our souls. 00:09:34.919 --> 00:09:36.840 And with God at the center of our life, 00:09:36.840 --> 00:09:42.720 there is absolutely nothing to fear. 00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:46.279 And I know that's very countercultural, isn't it? 00:09:46.279 --> 00:09:48.600 Doesn't culture want you to be afraid? 00:09:48.600 --> 00:09:51.480 Doesn't culture want to paralyze you almost? 00:09:51.480 --> 00:09:57.519 To thinking that, well, I can't go outside. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:09:59.480 I need to be inside and be perilous, 00:09:59.480 --> 00:10:02.960 in this state of paralysis, if you will. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:04.840 But there's freedom. 00:10:04.840 --> 00:10:08.039 There's new life in Christ. 00:10:08.039 --> 00:10:11.680 I'm reminded in Colossians chapter 1 verse 17, 00:10:11.680 --> 00:10:18.039 which says, Christ is before all things, and in him, 00:10:18.039 --> 00:10:22.719 all things hold together. 00:10:22.719 --> 00:10:23.759 All things hold together. 00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:26.639 And that verse not only speaks about how the universe is 00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:29.199 holding together with the laws that are established, 00:10:29.199 --> 00:10:30.279 like gravity, right? 00:10:30.279 --> 00:10:33.519 Or when we have things that are set in motion. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:37.799 But also our own lives are held together by Christ. 00:10:37.799 --> 00:10:40.919 The idea of being held together, we 00:10:40.919 --> 00:10:43.480 have Christ that was there at the beginning. 00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:47.120 And he sees to it that things are set in motion 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:49.799 and remain in order. 00:10:49.799 --> 00:10:52.399 Consider the four seasons. 00:10:52.399 --> 00:10:55.840 Does summer just not happen sometimes? 00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:58.039 Maybe depending on your location, right? 00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:01.120 But we have the four seasons, the natural flow of what 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:02.440 we can see in the earth. 00:11:02.440 --> 00:11:04.960 The sun rises and the sun sets. 00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:09.320 It has its own motion, if you will. 00:11:09.320 --> 00:11:11.799 We have the earth that moves, right? 00:11:11.799 --> 00:11:13.720 We have the plants that grow and the plant. 00:11:13.720 --> 00:11:16.879 We have seasons for everything. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:21.840 The same idea is we find this in Hebrews chapter one, verse 00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:22.759 three. 00:11:22.759 --> 00:11:24.720 This speaks of the power of Christ 00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:28.720 that upholds the universe by the word of his power. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:32.879 And that creation is held together by the power of Christ. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:38.159 In John chapter one, verse four, in him was life, 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:41.879 and the life was the light of men. 00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:45.519 The creation is maintained, so to speak. 00:11:45.519 --> 00:11:49.360 And in the same way, he sustains his creation. 00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:54.360 He sustains the plants, the fish in the sea, so to speak. 00:11:54.360 --> 00:11:58.840 Don't you realize that Christ sustains us? 00:11:58.840 --> 00:12:00.360 Think about that. 00:12:00.360 --> 00:12:05.079 The same one that made creation provided a way for salvation. 00:12:05.079 --> 00:12:08.240 Not only we're not only talking about the universe 00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:12.319 holding together, but how the Lord will hold us in his arms, 00:12:12.319 --> 00:12:14.919 so to speak, that God will sustain us, 00:12:14.919 --> 00:12:18.679 that Christ will be there for us no matter what it is that 00:12:18.679 --> 00:12:20.479 happens in this world. 00:12:20.479 --> 00:12:25.599 That is a hopeful message that we should all take to heart. 00:12:25.599 --> 00:12:28.519 Despite what we read on the news, 00:12:28.519 --> 00:12:30.279 despite what's going on in culture, 00:12:30.279 --> 00:12:32.479 I'm not saying completely ignore it, 00:12:32.479 --> 00:12:36.919 but just understand that there is hope that exists in Christ. 00:12:36.919 --> 00:12:38.879 And because we are made in the image of God, 00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:41.919 and because Christ sacrificed himself for us, 00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:44.319 we have the greatest opportunity for us 00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:47.120 who do not know the Lord to come to know the Lord, 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:50.960 and to be saved, and to be secure in Jesus Christ. 00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:53.240 It all begins through believing in him. 00:12:53.240 --> 00:12:55.160 It begins through faith. 00:12:55.160 --> 00:12:57.800 And through faith comes sustenance. 00:12:57.800 --> 00:13:00.320 It comes sustaining, so to speak. 00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:02.480 And I'd like for us to turn our Bibles. 00:13:02.480 --> 00:13:06.080 Please turn with me to page 1197. 00:13:06.080 --> 00:13:10.480 It's going to be Hebrews chapter 13, verses 5 through 8. 00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:14.480 We'll put that on the screen here. 00:13:30.800 --> 00:13:34.639 So once again, it's Hebrews chapter 13, verses 5 through 8, 00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:40.639 on page 1197, if you're using the ESV, Pew, Bible. 00:13:43.639 --> 00:13:45.279 We're going to start with verse 5. 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:47.120 Are you there? 00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:48.439 All right. 00:13:48.439 --> 00:13:55.080 Keep your life free from the love of money, right? 00:13:55.080 --> 00:13:57.759 And be content with what you have. 00:13:57.759 --> 00:14:00.399 For he has said, what did he say? 00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:02.360 I will never what? 00:14:02.360 --> 00:14:04.240 I'll never leave you. 00:14:04.240 --> 00:14:06.560 Nor what? 00:14:06.560 --> 00:14:08.159 Nor forsake you. 00:14:08.159 --> 00:14:13.279 So we can confidently say, the Lord is what? 00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:21.519 My helper, I will not fear what can man do to me. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:22.600 We can stop right there. 00:14:22.600 --> 00:14:25.000 But let's keep going. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.080 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you, 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:30.120 the word of God. 00:14:30.120 --> 00:14:33.039 Consider the outcome of their way of life, 00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:34.839 and imitate their faith. 00:14:34.839 --> 00:14:38.240 Verse 8, Jesus Christ is what? 00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:42.639 He is the same yesterday and today, and that's it? 00:14:42.639 --> 00:14:46.480 No, he is the same forever, amen? 00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:49.599 And considering this context, this chapter starts off 00:14:49.599 --> 00:14:52.679 by saying that we should continue to love one another, 00:14:52.679 --> 00:14:55.959 that we should show hospitality to one another, 00:14:55.959 --> 00:14:58.879 and we should remember those who are in prison. 00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:00.599 We should let marriage be in high honor. 00:15:00.600 --> 00:15:03.080 That's a good verse for us to remember. 00:15:03.080 --> 00:15:05.680 Then the verse goes on by saying, by keeping free 00:15:05.680 --> 00:15:09.120 from the love of money and be happy with what you have, 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.279 be content with what you have. 00:15:11.279 --> 00:15:14.519 These verses are encouragement to remain in the truth of God's 00:15:14.519 --> 00:15:15.519 word. 00:15:15.519 --> 00:15:18.120 But then we read that part that says, 00:15:18.120 --> 00:15:21.560 I will never leave you nor forsake you. 00:15:21.560 --> 00:15:24.399 What an encouragement from our Lord and our God, 00:15:24.399 --> 00:15:27.440 that he will not abandon us, that he will not forsake us, 00:15:27.440 --> 00:15:29.600 that he will not leave us, that God was always 00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:33.639 going to be there, no matter what happens in this crazy world 00:15:33.639 --> 00:15:37.080 that we live in, no matter what happens to you, 00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:39.120 even on a personal level. 00:15:39.120 --> 00:15:41.840 Let's say you're going through a really hard time. 00:15:41.840 --> 00:15:43.960 Let's say you're arguing with your spouse, 00:15:43.960 --> 00:15:46.560 or let's say direct quote from the Old Testament, 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:59.639 where God reminds his people that God will always be there 00:15:59.639 --> 00:16:00.919 for them. 00:16:00.919 --> 00:16:03.080 And this is no different than when Christ 00:16:03.080 --> 00:16:08.879 says that he will be with us until the end of the age. 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:13.840 This quote is found in Psalm 118. 00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:14.960 You don't have to turn there. 00:16:14.960 --> 00:16:17.320 It's verse 6 through 7. 00:16:17.320 --> 00:16:19.080 It's the same thing, right? 00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:22.159 I will never leave you nor forsake you. 00:16:22.159 --> 00:16:25.240 When we believe in the Lord and we receive in salvation, 00:16:25.240 --> 00:16:30.360 there is absolutely nothing for us to fear. 00:16:30.360 --> 00:16:32.879 That question in that verse that we were reading, 00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:36.080 what can man do to us? 00:16:36.080 --> 00:16:39.240 What can man do to us think about that? 00:16:39.240 --> 00:16:43.879 No one can take us out of the hand of God, so to speak. 00:16:43.879 --> 00:16:48.560 So there's nothing for us to fear. 00:16:48.560 --> 00:16:51.080 We are provided the Holy Spirit as well, 00:16:51.080 --> 00:16:53.840 who is called the Helper, just like it's 00:16:53.840 --> 00:16:58.560 mentioned in John chapter 14, verse 26. 00:16:58.560 -->
